Haemin Sunim is a Zen meditation teacher and international bestselling author from South Korea. He is known for a clear, compassionate voice and practical teachings on mindfulness, emotional well-being, and finding joy and balance in the midst of a busy modern life. His work speaks to everyday challenges with warmth, simplicity, and depth. One line from his site captures the spirit of it: "When everything around me is moving so fast, I stop and ask, 'Is it the world that's busy, or is it my mind?'"
His books have sold over six million copies worldwide, including more than one million each in the United Kingdom and Brazil, and have been translated into more than thirty-eight languages. In the Netherlands, one of his books set a national record as the longest-running nonfiction bestseller, and in South Korea it became the best-selling book of the decade. His work has been featured by The New York Times, The Guardian, NPR, and BBC Radio.
Haemin received Zen monastic training in South Korea and studied religion at the University of California, Berkeley, Harvard University, and Princeton University, where he earned his doctorate. He later taught Asian religions for seven years at Hampshire College in Massachusetts, bringing together monastic practice, academic depth, and lived experience.
He is regularly invited to give talks internationally and to lead meditation retreats across North America, Europe, and Asia. His retreat teaching blends Buddhism and Positive Psychology, using guided contemplation, gentle movement, journaling, and group dialogue. It is open to beginners and experienced practitioners alike.
Worth Knowing
Haemin Sunim is a South Korean Zen meditation teacher and international bestselling author whose work has sold over six million copies in thirty-eight languages, with one book becoming South Korea's best-selling title of the decade. Unlike many contemporary mindfulness teachers, he brings both monastic Zen training and rigorous academic credentials—a doctorate from Princeton and seven years teaching Asian religions—which gives his dharma talks and retreats unusual depth and accessibility. His teaching cuts through spiritual abstraction by focusing on everyday emotional reality: his signature question, "Is it the world that's busy, or is it my mind?", frames mindfulness not as escape but as practical reorientation for modern life. His work has been featured across The New York Times, The Guardian, NPR, and BBC Radio, indicating that his message extends well beyond Buddhist circles into general mainstream audiences. People care because he offers something uncommon in contemporary spirituality—teachings on meditation and emotional well-being that honor both ancient Buddhist lineage and contemporary psychology, delivered with genuine warmth rather than performative depth.
