Sell gift cards for your gatherings

Let your community give your gatherings to the people they love: gift cards in the amounts you choose, emailed on the day the giver picks, spent on any of your events.

BrightStar gift cards let the people in your community give your gatherings as a present. A buyer chooses an amount, writes a message, and picks the day it arrives. The person receiving it gets a beautiful email with a code they can spend on any of your events.

Every gift card belongs to you. It is bought from you, the money is paid to you when the card is bought, just like a ticket sale, and it can only be spent with you. BrightStar never holds the money in between.

Where to find it

Dashboard → Settings → Gift cards. Switch on "Offer gift cards" and save. Buyers then see "Give the gift of a gathering" on your event pages and on your organizer page. Selling gift cards needs a connected, verified Stripe account, because the money goes straight to you.

Setting up your gift card

Everything is on the Gift cards tab, with a live preview of the card beside it.

  1. 1Choose up to six amounts to offer, such as $25, $50 and $100.
  2. 2Decide whether buyers may also type their own amount, and set the lowest and highest.
  3. 3Pick a design: Aurora, Lotus, Dawn or Night sky. On Elevate you can add your own accent colour, as with Custom Design.
  4. 4Add a headline and a suggested message that buyers can keep or rewrite, and any terms of your own.
  5. 5Choose who pays the booking fee, and save.

What the buyer and the recipient see

Buying a card takes a minute and works well on a phone.

Spending a gift card

At checkout the buyer taps "Have a gift card?" and enters the code. The card pays for the tickets after any discount code, and the buyer pays the rest by card. Whatever is not used stays on the gift card for next time. At the door, the web box office has a gift card field next to the discount code.

A gift card can be used when every ticket in the cart is one of yours, in the same currency as the card.

Fees

A gift card sale carries the same fees as one ticket of the card's value on your plan, and you decide who pays them, as with tickets. When the card is spent there is no second fee on the part it pays. Fees apply only to anything the buyer still pays by card.

Managing your cards

The Cards list on the Gift cards tab shows every card with its balance.

The Outstanding balance at the top of the tab is the unspent money on your active gift cards: gatherings you still owe the people holding them. Treat it as a liability on your books until it is spent. It is shown per currency.
BrightStar gift cards never expire unless you choose otherwise, and that is what we recommend. If you do set an expiry, the shortest is five years, because US federal law does not allow less, and several US states, California among them, do not allow gift cards to expire at all. Check the rules where you operate before setting one. A card keeps the expiry it was issued with, so changing the setting later never shortens a card someone already holds.

Common questions

Can I sell gift cards for my events on BrightStar?

Yes. BrightStar organizers can sell gift cards from Dashboard → Settings → Gift cards. Buyers choose an amount, write a message and pick the day it is emailed, and the recipient can spend it on any of that organizer's events.

The money for a gift card is paid to the organizer when the card is bought, like a ticket sale, so the organizer needs a connected, verified Stripe account.

Can a BrightStar gift card be used with a different organizer?

No. A BrightStar gift card belongs to the organizer it was bought from and can only be spent on that organizer's events. BrightStar never holds gift card money between organizers.

What happens to the rest of a BrightStar gift card balance?

It stays on the card. When a BrightStar gift card pays for part of an order, the remaining balance can be used on a later order with the same organizer. Holders can check the balance on the organizer's page.

Do BrightStar gift cards expire?

Not by default. A BrightStar gift card never expires unless the organizer sets an expiry, and the shortest allowed is five years, in line with US federal law. Some US states do not allow gift card expiry at all.

Are there fees on BrightStar gift cards?

Selling a BrightStar gift card carries the same fees as one ticket of the same value on the organizer's plan. Spending it adds no second fee: fees apply only to anything still paid by card.
