What Is Consciousness? ExploringOneness and Boundaries

Oneness Movement

Sri Preethaji & Sri Krishnaji examine consciousness not as an individual property but as a unified field in which boundaries between self and other become permeable. Consciousness, in this view, is the depths where separation dissolves and oneness becomes the primary experience. This inquiry moves beyond abstract philosophy to point toward direct experience of interconnected awareness.

What Is the Nature of Consciousness?

Consciousness is often treated in Western discourse as something that an individual mind produces—a by-product of neural activity or a private inner space accessible only to oneself. Sri Preethaji & Sri Krishnaji propose a different foundation: consciousness is not a personal possession but a unified field that precedes and contains all individual awareness. In this framing, consciousness is not something you have; it is what you are fundamentally rooted in.

This distinction matters. If consciousness is understood as belonging to individuals, then boundaries are primary—you are conscious in your space, I am conscious in mine, and we meet across a gap. But if consciousness is a unified ground, then separation itself becomes a surface phenomenon, like waves on an ocean. The depth reveals interconnection; the surface shows apparent division.

How Do Boundaries Blur in Consciousness?

The teaching points toward a direct perceptual shift: as awareness turns inward and deepens, the rigid sense of being a separate self begins to soften. The boundary between observer and observed, between self and world, is not a physical wall but a constructed boundary maintained by habitual patterns of perception and identification.

When consciousness is journeyed into its depths—through meditation, contemplative inquiry, or states of genuine presence—the mechanism that keeps these boundaries firm loosens. This is not a loss of awareness but an expansion of it. The individual mind does not disappear; rather, it is recognized as one localized expression within a much larger unified field. In this state, the boundary between "my consciousness" and "your consciousness" or "the consciousness in this tree" becomes transparent.

This is not poetic language alone. Many contemplative traditions report that in deep meditative states, the sense of separation becomes less compelling, and the experience of interconnection becomes direct and undeniable. What was only believed intellectually—that all is one—becomes lived experience.

What Does Oneness Actually Mean in Practice?

Oneness is not the idea that everything is the same or that individuality ceases to exist. Rather, it is the recognition that beneath the appearance of separate entities lies a unified field of consciousness in which all apparent separation arises. In practical terms, oneness means that the boundaries you experience are real at the level of form and function, but they are not absolute at the level of consciousness itself.

When someone experiences oneness—even temporarily—the consequences shift. Compassion becomes natural, not because it is forced as an ethical principle, but because harming another is experienced as harming oneself. Time feels different. The obsessive self-protective mechanism that treats the world as fundamentally "other" relaxes. This is not about eliminating the ego or becoming passive; it is about recognizing what is actually true about the nature of existence.

Sri Preethaji & Sri Krishnaji, through the Oneness Movement, have worked with thousands of individuals reporting such shifts in consciousness. The teaching is not dogmatic but invitational: direct experience is available to anyone willing to inquiry deeply into the nature of their own awareness.

Why Does Consciousness Feel Separate If It Is Unified?

A natural question arises: if consciousness is truly unified, why does it feel so divided? Why does my experience feel locked inside my skull, inaccessible to you? The answer lies in understanding how perception and consciousness are related but distinct. Consciousness may be unified, but perception is always localized and limited by the sensory apparatus and neural structure of a particular organism.

You perceive the world through your eyes, your ears, your body. This creates a natural and appropriate sense of perspective and location. But the awareness itself—the witnessing capacity that knows all this perception—need not be trapped by those same limits. A deeper inquiry reveals that awareness is not moving through the body like a person in a car; rather, the body-mind arises as an event within a larger, non-local field of consciousness.

The boundaries we experience are functional and useful. They allow for individual agency, learning, and growth. But they are not the ultimate nature of what we are. This is why contemplative practice often involves relaxing the grip of habitual identification with the individual self-image—not to abandon individuality, but to recognize it as one expression of something vastly larger.

How Does This Understanding Transform Daily Life?

For those who have touched this recognition directly, life often shifts in subtle but profound ways. Decision-making becomes less driven by ego-protection and more aligned with what serves the whole. Relationships deepen because the person across from you is no longer purely "other" but recognized as inseparable from your own being. Suffering decreases not because problems disappear, but because the existential suffering born from isolation and separation becomes less real.

Fear—which is rooted in the sense of being a vulnerable separate self in a threatening world—naturally diminishes as the unified nature of consciousness is recognized. This does not mean becoming passive or reckless; it means acting from a different ground. Action flows from connection and wisdom rather than from defensive reactivity.

The teaching is pragmatic: oneness is not just a philosophical position but an accessible experience that has measurable effects on how one lives and relates.

Where to Go From Here

If this inquiry into consciousness resonates, the next step is not intellectual accumulation but direct exploration. Sit quietly and notice: what is aware of your thoughts? What is the quality of that awareness? Is it truly personal and individual, or does it have a universal, impersonal quality? Contemplative practice—whether meditation, self-inquiry, or mindful presence—provides the laboratory for testing these questions directly.

Sri Preethaji & Sri Krishnaji's teaching points toward a recognition available to anyone: consciousness is not a mystery locked in the brain but a depth you can journey into at any moment through genuine presence and inquiry. The boundaries that seem so solid are permeable to those willing to look deeply. Oneness is not a distant spiritual achievement but what is true right now, waiting to be noticed.

According to this teaching, consciousness is fundamentally unified, not individual. While perception is localized through the body and senses, the witnessing awareness itself is non-local and shared. Separation appears real at the surface level but dissolves when consciousness is explored at its depths.
The teaching suggests that direct experience of oneness is available to anyone willing to inquire deeply into their own awareness through contemplative practice. This is not a rare achievement reserved for spiritual specialists but an accessible recognition of what is already true.
Separation is experienced because perception is necessarily localized through individual body-minds. However, the awareness itself that knows perception need not be trapped by those limits. Habitual identification with the separate self-image also maintains the illusion of division.
When oneness becomes a lived experience rather than just an idea, compassion and wise action flow naturally. Fear decreases because the existential threat of being an isolated self is recognized as illusory. Decisions shift from ego-protection toward what serves the whole.
In this teaching, consciousness refers to the unified ground or field itself, while awareness is often used to describe the active knowing capacity. Both point toward the same reality—the witnessing principle that is your fundamental nature.
Boundaries blur because they are recognized as functional distinctions made by the mind, not absolute separations at the level of consciousness. In deep states of presence, the boundary between observer and observed, self and other, becomes transparent.
