Om Bhagavan Kirtan: A Short Listen Through the Chant

Om Bhagavan is a short kirtan recording, a little over six and a half minutes long, posted to YouTube in March 2012 under the channel name Pat O'Connor and credited to the musician Jim Gelcer. Nearly all of what the video offers is sound: chanted vocals moving over music, with no spoken introduction, no teaching, and no translation. Its shape is built from a small set of syllables that return again and again. This piece takes that material at face value and says plainly what it can and cannot tell you.

What is actually in the recording?

The transcript attached to the video is thin and mostly made of sound markers. The first words it picks up, around nine seconds in, are "omag" and "sag." At 17 seconds comes a longer phrase rendered as "anand shand bag." These are the automatic transcription's best guesses at sung syllables, not verified lyrics, but the pattern they reveal is consistent: the same sounds keep coming back. "Anand" reappears at 62 seconds. A "bandag" refrain arrives at 78 seconds, returns in a doubled form at 84 seconds, and surfaces again at 214 and 274 seconds. Around the four-minute mark, a single sung "Ah" stands alone in the transcript. Between phrases the text is blank, marked only as music, applause, or laughter. The audible laughter at roughly 104, 168 and 318 seconds suggests a live or loosely performed feel, though the video does not say where or when it was captured.

Read honestly, the chant works through repetition: a phrase is sung, set down, and lifted again. That is the one structural fact the transcript supports, and it is worth listening for on a second pass. Notice how the refrain re-enters after a stretch of wordless vocal and music, and how the closing "bag" at about six minutes lets the piece settle.

Who made it, and where is the rest of the music?

The video's description lists its keywords as kirtan, yoga, Jim Gelcer, Bhagavan, om, spiritual, namaste, music, motivational, musician and jazz. It also directs viewers to the artist's website, www.jimgelcerkirtan.com, and states that the music is available on iTunes and Amazon. Those are the only concrete pointers the upload gives. The description does not name the instruments played, the recording location, or the session date, and the transcript offers no clues beyond the vocal syllables. The "jazz" keyword sits alongside kirtan in the description; the video itself does not explain how the two relate in Gelcer's work.

What does this video not tell you?

It does not translate the chant. Anyone hoping to learn the meaning of "Om Bhagavan" or the surrounding syllables from this upload will come away empty, because no spoken explanation accompanies the singing and the transcript cannot be trusted for exact words. It also offers no interview, no context about the artist's practice, and no account of why this particular chant was chosen. At the point this article was prepared, the upload had 1,737 views, a figure that reflects its reach rather than its content.

The gap is real, but it is also a clear boundary. The video is a listening document. What it gives you is a chant built on repetition, credited to a named musician, with a path to the full recordings. Anything beyond that would be our interpretation rather than the artist's.

Where to go from here

To hear more of Jim Gelcer's music, start with the artist's own site at www.jimgelcerkirtan.com, which the video itself points to, and then the releases on iTunes and Amazon named in the description. If you want the meaning of the Sanskrit-derived words, look for a published translation rather than relying on this automatic transcript, which mishears them. And if you want to understand how a repeated phrase works on the ear, put this six-minute recording on a loop and listen for the moments where the refrain returns.

Domande frequenti

It is a roughly six-and-a-half-minute kirtan recording posted in 2012, consisting of chanted vocals over music with no spoken teaching or translation. The chant is built on a small set of repeating syllables such as 'anand' and 'bandag.'
The video credits Jim Gelcer as the musician, and its description lists keywords including kirtan, yoga, musician, and jazz. The upload itself does not provide a longer biography, so the description is the only source for those details.
The video's description points viewers to www.jimgelcerkirtan.com and says the music is available on iTunes and Amazon. Those are the artist's own stated channels for finding the full recordings.
The video does not translate its chant, and its automatic transcript mishears several syllables, so it cannot be relied on for exact words. A published translation of the chant text is the best place to look for meaning.
This video shows repetition clearly, with phrases such as 'bandag' re-entering several times across the recording. The upload does not state the artist's intention behind this, so listeners should treat any purpose as their own reading.
