For more than 35 years, Nubia Teixeira has been quietly reshaping how Western practitioners encounter yoga—not through flagship studios or viral Instagram sequences, but through a sustained devotion to the goddess traditions that predate contemporary asana culture by centuries. As a yoginī, dancer, teacher, and author, Teixeira has built a body of work that insists on the centrality of the Divine Feminine in yogic practice, weaving together Bhakti devotion, Hatha yoga, and the temple dance traditions of Odisha into a coherent, embodied pedagogy.

Her approach stands apart in a landscape crowded with alignment-focused vinyasa and athleticized power yoga. Where many teachers foreground physical postures, Teixeira structures her classes around mudras, pranayama, and mantra—the subtle technologies of breath, gesture, and sound that classical texts position as the deeper architecture of transformation. Layered into these practices are movement vocabularies borrowed from Odissi, one of India's eight classical dance forms, originally performed in devotion to Jagannath and other deities in the temples of Odisha. In Teixeira's hands, the body becomes not merely a vehicle for fitness or flexibility, but a site of devotion itself.

An Early Calling

Teixeira began practicing and teaching yoga at 18, an unusually early entry point that has afforded her decades of development outside the franchised teacher training circuit that came to dominate Western yoga in the 1990s and 2000s. That early start allowed her to build a practice grounded in lineage rather than market trends, oriented toward recovery rather than innovation—specifically, the recovery of female voices, narratives, and deities within a tradition whose global presentation has long been shaped by male gurus and male-centered cosmologies.

From the outset, her focus has been on making visible what has been marginalized: the goddess traditions within Hinduism, the feminine principles embedded in yogic philosophy, and the embodied wisdom carried through dance and ritual rather than text alone. This is not feminist revision so much as historical reclamation, a patient excavation of what was always there.

Mother Goddess Yoga and the Bhakti Nova School

Teixeira is the founder of Mother Goddess Yoga and the Bhakti Nova School of Yoga & Dance, both organizations built around the premise that classical Indian yogic and devotional traditions can—and should—be taught through a feminine-centered lens. These are not large institutions, but rather intimate teaching ecosystems designed to transmit specific lineages with care and precision.

Her weekly Mother Goddess Yoga classes reflect this commitment. They are not drop-in workouts but structured explorations of devotional practice, blending the physicality of Hatha yoga with the symbolic language of Odissi and the internal focus of Bhakti. Students are invited into a form of practice that is ritual as much as exercise, performance as much as meditation.

The Bhakti Nova School extends this work into longer formats, offering training and immersion in both yogic and dance traditions. Here, Teixeira teaches mudras not as decorative hand shapes but as precise instruments for channeling prana and invoking particular qualities of consciousness—reverence, clarity, surrender. The curriculum is rooted in the understanding that gesture, like mantra, is a form of invocation.

Yoga and the Art of Mudras

Teixeira's most widely accessible work is her book Yoga and the Art of Mudras, published by Mandala Publishing. The volume is both manual and manifesto, synthesizing three streams of practice—Bhakti devotion, Odissi dance, and Hatha yoga—into a coherent exploration of the symbolic hand gestures used in ritual and performance across Indian traditions.

The book positions mudras as technologies, not ornamentation. Each gesture is a circuit, a way of directing energy and attention toward specific states or deities. Teixeira draws on her decades of training in both yoga and classical dance to offer a nuanced account of how these gestures function within devotional practice, how they encode meaning, and how they can be integrated into contemporary sadhana.

It is a work of translation in the deepest sense: not merely explaining mudras to a Western audience, but bridging the gap between performance and practice, between the temple and the yoga studio, between the external form and the internal transformation it is meant to catalyze.

Why She Matters

In an era when yoga has been flattened into wellness content and stripped of its cosmological moorings, Teixeira's work offers something rarer: depth without dogma, tradition without fundamentalism. She teaches practices that are old and specific, but does so in a way that honors their origins while making them intelligible to contemporary practitioners.

Her focus on the Divine Feminine addresses a real absence. Much of the yoga available in the West has been shaped by male teachers and male-centric philosophies, even as the majority of Western practitioners are women. Teixeira's insistence on centering goddess traditions and feminine principles offers a corrective—not by rejecting the tradition, but by recovering the parts of it that have been ignored or erased.

She reaches a particular kind of student: those weary of yoga-as-workout, hungry for ritual, drawn to devotion, interested in the intersections of dance and spiritual practice. Her audience is smaller than that of celebrity teachers, but arguably more committed, seeking not transformation in 30 days but sustained practice over decades.
