Descripción

Modern life trains the nervous system toward constant urgency. The Serengeti runs on a different rhythm: nothing rushes, yet everything gets done. This Tanzania wellness retreat, the Tanzania Somatic Safari & Adventure, is a thirteen-day small-group journey through the Northern Tanzania Circuit, designed so the body can remember how to rest and breathe fully.

Led by somatic educator and qigong teacher Amy Pattee Colvin, this is not a standard sightseeing trip or an exhausting sprint across the savannah. It is a deliberate somatic immersion. Daily qigong and breathwork, often practiced in the open air, join wildlife viewing and time with indigenous communities. The vast landscapes, from ancient baobab trees to the horizon of the Serengeti, invite awe, which interrupts mental chatter and helps release chronic tension.

The group is limited to twelve travelers, and a deposit secures your space. If you are drawn to travel that settles you rather than depletes you, this journey offers a slower way of being in one of the world's great wild places.

What to Expect

The journey begins in Moshi, at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, where the first days allow your body to adjust after long-haul travel. From there, the itinerary moves through the northern circuit:

- Local culture and landscape: A visit to a coffee plantation in Materuni village, following the whole process from harvest to cup, and an unhurried, moderate two-hour walk to Materuni Waterfall, with space to learn the essence of qigong in nature.
- Tarangire National Park: Towering baobabs and concentrated wildlife along the Tarangire River, where you may see elephant herds, zebras, giraffes, lions and leopards.
- Lake Eyasi region: A remote soda lake on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, home to two indigenous communities and far fewer visitors than the typical safari stops.
- Indigenous encounters: Time with the Chagga (farmers), Hadzabe (hunter-gatherers) and Datoga (warriors), whose ways of life have endured for millennia without modern technology.
- Parks and preserves: Nine days in world-class parks and preserves, where rather than racing to check off the "big five," you take time to observe animal intelligence, such as the quiet patience of a sleeping lion.

You return home with photographs, and also with an embodied memory of quiet and practical somatic tools you can use for the rest of your life.

About Amy Pattee Colvin

Amy Pattee Colvin is a somatic educator who teaches qigong, meditation and compassion practices for capable, driven people whose nervous systems are stuck in overdrive. She blends neuroscience, compassion training and Taoist movement to help people settle an overactive mind, release physical holding patterns and restore vitality, moving from force to flow. Her qigong path began in the mid-1990s, and for nearly 30 years she has studied under Leong Tan, teaching Sum Faht® Meditation and forms he developed. Her fascination with the mind-body connection began in childhood, when she watched her father use hypnosis and creative imagery to help her heal from scrapes.

Venue & Logistics

The retreat travels across the Northern Tanzania Circuit, beginning and ending with international arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Private ground transportation takes the group to the first base, the Stella Maris Hotel in Moshi, followed by nights at camps and lodges along the route, such as Angata Tarangire Camp and Lake Eyasi Safari Lodge, or similar. Most days include breakfast, lunch and dinner. Activities include a moderate two-hour walk, so comfortable walking footwear and clothing suited to time outdoors are sensible. Further details on accessibility and packing are best confirmed with the organizer.
