Hindi Indie

A contemporary Indian independent music movement where artists create and release Hindi-language songs outside the Bollywood film system, characterized by intimate storytelling and understated production.

What is Hindi Indie?

Hindi indie is a contemporary Indian independent music movement in which artists write and release primarily Hindi-language songs outside the traditional Bollywood film system. It blends the intimate storytelling of singer-songwriters with the textures of indie folk, alternative rock, and mellow pop, often presented with understated, DIY production. Sonically, the style favors acoustic guitars, light percussion, piano, and atmospheric synths, with warm, close-miked vocals that foreground lyrics.

Thematically, Hindi indie tends toward introspective and romantic subjects, urban coming‑of‑age narratives, and everyday imagery expressed in colloquial Hindi (often seasoned with Urdu vocabulary). Unlike the glossy production and cinematic scale of Bollywood soundtracks, Hindi indie artists prioritize authenticity, artistic control, and direct connection with listeners. The genre represents a shift away from India’s film-dominated music industry toward artist-led, independent releases distributed primarily through streaming platforms and social media.

Origins & Lineage

The big leap came in the 90s, when the advent of music channels allowed independent artists to finally leverage videos to reach mass audiences. Channel V, which started in 1994, played a major role in promoting indie-pop culture. Rock Machine, a Mumbai-based band that had been around since the early 80s, rebranded itself as Indus Creed and entranced audiences with the gorgeous ‘Pretty Child’, Euphoria became pioneers of Hindi rock and sold well, Sunita Rao’s floaty ‘Pari Hoon Main (I am an Angel)’ popped up several times a day on Channel V, and Lucky Ali crooning ‘O Sanam (O Beloved)’ had many a teen going weak in the knees.

Yet, by the early 2000s, the indie scene seemed to have gone underwater much like Silk Route’s Mohit Chauhan in the video of the 1998 hit ‘Dooba Dooba (Drowning)’. Producing and marketing music was expensive, piracy was rampant resulting in lower album sales, and for many indie artists, it was either Bollywood or bust.

The current Hindi indie movement emerged in the 2010s with the rise of streaming platforms like Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music, which eliminated traditional gatekeepers. The rise in Indie/Independent artists and their listeners in the past couple of years has been jaw-dropping. The surge of modern indie music among teenagers has been evident. Famous indie artists like Prateek Kuhad and Anuv Jain top the charts in the indie-pop genre. Prateek Kuhad is one of the most acclaimed Indie artists, having been dubbed “one of the country’s finest singer-songwriters” by Rolling Stone India. He has recently experienced a meteoric rise on the international music scene, becoming the first Indian musician to sign with the renowned Elektra Records label.

How It’s Practiced

The result is a relatable, low-key aesthetic that contrasts with the scale and spectacle of mainstream film music. Hindi indie artists typically operate outside traditional recording studios, using home recording setups and digital audio workstations to produce tracks independently. The production values emphasize warmth and intimacy over polish—vocals are often recorded in close proximity to the microphone, creating a conversational, confessional quality.

Instrumentation typically includes acoustic guitar, piano or keyboard, light percussion, and layered synthesizers that create atmospheric soundscapes. Unlike classical Hindustani music with its emphasis on ragas and talas, or Bollywood’s orchestral arrangements, Hindi indie draws from Western singer-songwriter traditions, indie rock, and folk music. Artists write in colloquial Hindi that incorporates Urdu poetic vocabulary, English phrases, and regional dialects, reflecting the multilingual reality of urban Indian youth.

Lyrical content focuses on personal experiences—romantic relationships, urban alienation, mental health, social observation—rather than the dramatic narratives typical of film music. The aesthetic privileges emotional honesty and vulnerability over virtuosity or spectacle.

Hindi Indie Today

He points to artists and bands, from Indian Ocean to figures in the Punjabi indie scene, as well as Nucleya, Prateek Kuhad, Anuv Jain, Hanumankind and newer names like Reble, who have built audiences on their own terms. Streaming platforms, independent venues and music festivals, he argues, have created an ecosystem in which artistes can find listeners without passing through Bollywood as a gatekeeper.

Today’s seekers encounter Hindi indie primarily through digital platforms—Spotify playlists, YouTube algorithms, Instagram reels, and music streaming services. Live performances occur at independent music venues, college festivals, and dedicated indie music festivals that have emerged across Indian cities. Artists like The Local Train, The Yellow Diary, and numerous bedroom producers distribute music directly to fans without label intermediaries.

A Spotify survey in 2019 found that this young set is less beholden to Bollywood than older generations, and has a taste for K-Pop and new genres. The movement has created career paths for musicians outside Bollywood’s playback singing system, though financial sustainability remains challenging for most independent artists.

Common Misconceptions

Hindi indie is not simply Bollywood music released independently. The genres differ fundamentally in production values, distribution channels, lyrical themes, and artistic intent. While Bollywood soundtracks are created to serve film narratives and reach mass audiences through theatrical releases, Hindi indie prioritizes personal artistic expression and niche audience connection.

It is not the same as Indian indie rock or the broader Indian independent music movement. Hindi indie specifically refers to Hindi-language independent music with singer-songwriter sensibilities, while Indian indie encompasses rock bands, electronic producers, metal acts, and artists working in English or regional languages.

Hindi indie is not a revival of 1990s Indipop. While both movements represent non-film music, 1990s Indipop featured glossy production, music video aesthetics, and aimed for mainstream commercial success. Contemporary Hindi indie embraces lo-fi aesthetics, streaming distribution, and values authenticity over commercial appeal.

Additionally, Indian independent artists contend with a challenge at home: the country’s enduring fascination with Bollywood soundtracks. Hindi indie has not replaced Bollywood’s cultural dominance but exists alongside it as an alternative for listeners seeking different aesthetic and thematic content.

How to Begin

Start with Prateek Kuhad’s albums In Tokens & Charms (2015) or cold/mess (2018), which exemplify the genre’s intimate production and Hindi-English lyrical blend. Listen to Anuv Jain’s singles like “Alag Aasmaan” or “Baarishein” for stripped-down acoustic arrangements with Hindi lyrics focused on romantic introspection.

Explore curated Spotify or YouTube playlists titled “Hindi Indie” or “Indie India” to discover emerging artists. Attend live performances at independent venues in major Indian cities like Mumbai’s AntiSocial, Delhi’s Piano Man Jazz Club, or Bangalore’s Humming Tree, where Hindi indie acts regularly perform.

For deeper context, follow music journalism outlets like Rolling Stone India or platforms like Vh1 India that cover the independent music scene. Engage with artist communities on Instagram and YouTube, where many Hindi indie musicians share their creative process, unreleased demos, and connect directly with listeners outside traditional music industry structures.
