Christian Rock

A genre of rock music with lyrics focused on Christian faith, Jesus, and biblical themes, emerging from the late 1960s Jesus Movement.

What is Christian Rock?

Christian rock is a genre of rock music characterized by the sonic elements of rock—electric guitars, bass, drums, amplified sound—combined with lyrical content explicitly focused on Christian faith, biblical themes, and the person of Jesus Christ. The extent to which lyrics reference Christianity varies: some bands write direct worship songs or evangelistic messages, while others explore spiritual themes or address social issues from a Christian worldview. Christian rock exists both within the Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) industry (labels, radio, festivals) and independently, with artists aiming to reach Christian audiences, secular listeners, or both.

Origins & Lineage

Christian rock originated on the West Coast of the United States in the late 1960s and early 1970s, developing in parallel to the Jesus Movement—a mass revival movement among hippies and countercultural youth who embraced evangelical Christianity while retaining communal and anti-establishment sensibilities. The genre took root in population centers like Southern California (especially Costa Mesa and Hollywood), San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago around 1969–70, as large numbers of hippies and street musicians converted to born-again Christianity, in part due to the outreach of Lonnie Frisbee and Pastor Chuck Smith of Calvary Chapel in Costa Mesa.

Larry Norman released his first solo album, Upon This Rock, in 1969, which critics consider to be the first major Christian rock album. The Library of Congress later selected his 1972 album Only Visiting This Planet as an American cultural treasure, calling Norman’s 1969 debut “the key work in the early history of Christian rock”. Christian rock historian John J. Thompson wrote in 2008, “It is certainly no overstatement to say that Larry Norman is to Christian music what John Lennon is to rock & roll or Bob Dylan is to folk music”. Norman famously asked in song, “Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music?”

Other leaders within the Jesus Movement included Barry McGuire, Love Song, Second Chapter of Acts, Randy Stonehill, Randy Matthews, and later Keith Green. Petra and Resurrection Band, two bands who brought harder rock into the early CCM community, had their origins in the early to mid-1970s. They reached their height in popularity in the late 1980s alongside Christian hard rock acts such as Stryper, the latter having videos played on MTV and airtime on mainstream radio stations with their hit song “Honestly”.

By 1973, the phrase “contemporary Christian music” (CCM) had been coined by Ron Moore, and the first edition of CCM Magazine was published in July 1977. By the end of the 1970s the term “Jesus music” fell out of use as the movement was replaced by the industry.

How It’s Practiced

Christian rock encompasses a wide range of rock subgenres: folk rock, hard rock, punk, metal, alternative, indie, pop-punk, and metalcore. Musically, it mirrors secular rock in instrumentation, production techniques, and performance energy. Bands perform at churches, Christian festivals (such as the Cornerstone Festival and Ichthus Music Festival), arenas, and occasionally secular venues. The extent to which lyrics are explicitly Christian varies between bands; many Christian rock bands have ties to contemporary Christian music labels, media outlets, and festivals, while other bands are independent.

Some Christian rock artists write songs intended for congregational worship or evangelistic outreach, while others create art that reflects their faith without overt preaching. Some bands see their audience as the general public—for example, Bono of U2 combines elements of spirituality and faith into his lyrics, but the band is not directly labeled as a “Christian rock” band and may be rejected by or specifically reject the CCM label.

Christian Rock Today

Christian rock remains a significant segment of the broader CCM industry, with dedicated radio stations, record labels (such as Tooth & Nail Records), streaming playlists, and annual festivals. In the 1990s and 2000s, Tooth & Nail Records became a catalyst in legitimizing Christian rock as a notable subgenre of alternative rock, signing acts like Starflyer 59 and MxPx and making alternative rock immediately accessible within evangelical church communities. Bands such as DC Talk, Jars of Clay, and Audio Adrenaline achieved commercial success in the 1980s–90s, while in the 2000s and onwards, Christian rock bands Skillet, Thousand Foot Krutch, and Red developed sounds combining hard rock and nu metal.

The musical genre that was once rejected by mainstream Christian churches is now considered by certain churches as one of the most important evangelism tools of their congregations. Christian rock is encountered today through streaming services, YouTube, podcasts, live worship settings that incorporate rock instrumentation, and touring bands that play both churches and mainstream venues.

Common Misconceptions

It’s not merely “secular rock with Jesus lyrics.” Christian rock artists often critique consumerism, war, injustice, and hypocrisy within the church itself—Larry Norman’s songs drew controversy from both the conservative religious establishment and the secular music press for his lyrical mix of radical religious, political, and social themes.

It’s not universally embraced by Christians. From nearly the first moment rock and roll found its way into American homes, it was controversial, and in 1950s and '60s America, much of this discourse was based in religion, helping lay the groundwork for today’s culture wars as conservative religious leaders believed they were locked in a battle against music that “threatened the family, the church and the very integrity of the nation”. Some churches thought that rock and roll was the devil’s music, and debates over rhythm, volume, and cultural associations persist in some conservative Christian circles.

It’s not a monolith. Christian rock includes everything from acoustic singer-songwriters to death metal bands. Artists range from those creating radio-friendly worship anthems to underground experimental acts.

It’s not immune to commercialization or controversy. Larry Norman criticized what he saw as the “commercialization of Christian music in America,” including the role of copyrights and licensing, and tensions between artistic integrity and market demands remain.

How to Begin

Start with the pioneers: listen to Larry Norman’s Upon This Rock (1969) or Only Visiting This Planet (1972). Explore Petra’s catalog for classic Christian hard rock, or dc Talk’s Jesus Freak (1995) for a genre-defining blend of rock, hip-hop, and grunge. For contemporary sounds, try Skillet, Switchfoot, or Thousand Foot Krutch. Read Gregory Alan Thornbury’s Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music? Larry Norman and the Perils of Christian Rock (2018) or Randall J. Stephens’s The Devil’s Music: How Christians Inspired, Condemned, and Embraced Rock ‘n’ Roll for historical context. Attend a Christian music festival or explore curated playlists on streaming platforms tagged “Christian rock” or “CCM rock.”
