Descripción
Internal Family Systems, or IFS, understands the psyche as a family of parts gathered around a core Self, the true centre of who we are and the source from which calm, compassion and connection flow. In the more than thirty years since Richard C. Schwartz founded the model, its principles and practices have spread around the world among therapists, clients and self-guided practitioners. In The Spirituality of Internal Family Systems, subtitled A Practice-Based Journey to Your Sacred Self, Schwartz turns to a side of the work he had not shared widely before: the spiritual phenomena he has met again and again with his clients, and in himself, while developing IFS.
He describes the programme as "the most in-depth spiritual exploration of IFS that I've ever taught." He explores why the Self appears to be more than a psychological state, how it may connect us with what wisdom traditions call the Divine, True Nature or God, and the loving guides and ancestor spirits many of his clients encounter. A committed sceptic for much of his life, Schwartz is clear that you do not need these ideas to benefit from IFS; the programme is offered to open-minded seekers who sense there is more to the Self.
What You'll Learn
- The spiritual evolution of IFS. Schwartz's journey from sceptical rationalist to spiritually receptive scientist.
- Self-energy. Its restorative power within the psyche and in the world, and the spiritual dimensions of the 8 C's and the 5 P's.
- Legacy burdens. How emotional and belief-based burdens pass through families and cultures, and how to identify and release them.
- Unattached burdens. What many traditions describe as harmful external energies, and how the presence of Self can act as a protective shield.
- IFS and psychedelics. Their possible role in IFS work, with the need for appropriate therapeutic facilitation and aftercare.
- IFS and spiritual traditions. Which meditations and contemplative techniques may support or impede IFS work.
- Conflict and guides. Bringing Self to conflict within and between people, and engaging with your own guides and ancestor spirits.
Inside the Programme
The heart of the programme is ten recorded video sessions:
1. The Spiritual Evolution of IFS
2. How We Lost and Regain Access to Spiritual Wisdom, with the practice Making Space for Self
3. Self-Energy, with the exercise Opening to and Extending Self-Energy
4. Unburdening Legacy Burdens, with the exercise Identifying a Legacy Burden
5. Unattached Burdens and the Question of Good vs Evil, with the practice Scanning for Unattached Burdens
6. IFS and Psychedelics
7. IFS and Spiritual Traditions, with the exercise IFS as a Daily Practice
8. IFS and Conflict, with the exercise Accessing Self in the Face of Conflict
9. Accessing Guides, including parallels with Indigenous shamanic traditions and the practice The Path
10. Unburdening Towards Wholeness, a closing session on IFS beyond mental health
Alongside the sessions are two recorded Q&As with Schwartz and two bonus conversations. In IFS and Christianity: The Journey of Reclaiming Faith, he is joined by Rev. Dr. Celeste Lebak and Pastor Bonnie Lebak, with a guided reflection on the parable of the Lost Sheep. In Buddhism and IFS, he speaks with Lama Willa Blythe Baker, a Harvard-trained dharma teacher and lineage holder in the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism, who leads a guided Befriending practice.
Who It's For
Schwartz created the programme for therapists and practitioners with a basic familiarity with IFS, and it is offered to clients, self-guided practitioners and curious wisdom seekers as well. If you are new to IFS, he recommends reading his book Introduction to Internal Family Systems first.
It may speak to you if you:
- have worked with IFS as a therapist, client or self-guided practitioner and sense there is more to the Self
- are drawn to guides, ancestors and the spiritual side of inner work
- want to see how IFS meets meditation, shamanic practice and other traditions
- are exploring inherited family or cultural patterns in your own life
It is a self-guided learning experience rather than therapy, and it offers no certificate or continuing education credits. Many people find it a complement to one-to-one therapy, and Sounds True suggests consulting a licensed IFS therapist if you are seeking individual support.
About the Teacher
Richard C. Schwartz, PhD, is the creator of Internal Family Systems, an evidence-based therapeutic model that de-pathologizes the multipart personality. His IFS Institute offers training for professionals and the general public. He is on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and has published five books, including No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model. He lives near Chicago with his wife, Jeanne, close to his three daughters and his grandchildren.
How It Works
The Spirituality of Internal Family Systems is a live online programme with Sounds True that begins on December 7, 2026, when the course materials open. The ten sessions and the two recorded Q&As are pre-recorded, so you can move through them at your convenience. The live element is one Q&A with Schwartz on Wednesday, December 16, 2026, at 7:30 am PT / 10:30 am ET, where he answers questions and goes deeper into the teachings. It is recorded and available for replay within 48 hours, and you keep lifetime access to all the sessions and materials. BrightStar lists the programme so that seekers exploring IFS, inner work and the spiritual life can find it alongside the conscious events and teachers they already follow.
