Ho'oponopono: Four Phrases and the Practice of Forgiveness

In a nine-minute Portuguese-language video that has been viewed more than 6.4 million times, the yoga teacher Raissa Zoccal leads a listener through Ho'oponopono, a practice of forgiveness built on four short phrases: I'm sorry, please forgive me, I love you, I'm grateful. The video is less a lecture than a performance of the practice. It begins with breath, moves into a long spoken prayer, and widens its circle from the speaker's own body to the people who have hurt her, then to ancestors, and finally to the Earth. What makes it worth a close look is the direction of travel. The practice asks the person speaking to take responsibility first, and it ends with an apology to the listener for having shared pain at all.

A note on the text: the video is in Portuguese, and the transcript used here is an automatic English rendering with some garbled passages. The quotations below follow that rendering and are close to, not identical with, the original wording. Timestamps refer to the video.

What happens when a meditation opens with breath instead of a lecture?

The transcript begins mid-guidance, with a voice narrating a session: "And then Deivison sits comfortably. I'm noticing the natural flow of his breathing. I'm noticing the movement that his breath makes in his body" (0:00). The guide says she is trying to deepen the inhale and lengthen the exhale with each breath (0:25 to 0:33). That ordering is deliberate. Before a single phrase of forgiveness is spoken, the body is asked to slow down, so that what follows is received by a listener who is breathing rather than defending a grievance.

It is a craft choice worth noticing. Many spoken practices front-load the theory and then ask for stillness. Here the stillness comes first, and the words arrive into it.

What does the teacher claim Ho'oponopono does to emotion?

The auto-transcript spells the practice's name as "Pono Cloth," but the description is unmistakable. At 0:40 Zoccal introduces it as a technique "known worldwide" and makes a strong claim:

"This is one of the most effective self-healing methods that exists because it emits frequencies in hertz that cleanse and cancel emotions that are generating negative situations in your life." (Raissa Zoccal, guided Ho'oponopono meditation, 0:40)

The model behind that claim is a chain of cause and effect. Emotional charge is stored in the subconscious as memory; that stored material "creat[es] and attract[s] undesirable circumstances and situations." If the stored charge is cleared, the circumstances it attracts should change. The video offers the hertz language without measurement or citation, so treat it as the teacher's framework rather than a demonstrated mechanism. What is useful to the reader is the logic: the practice treats emotional patterns, not only events, as the thing to work on.

Why are the same four phrases repeated again and again?

The keywords are simple, and the video is clear about how they are used. They are "pronounced at any time of day" (1:26), and the guide asks that they be said "again and again throughout my day" to cleanse the subconscious of what she calls its emotional baggage. The four phrases are not four separate instructions. They are a single refrain, meant to be applied to whatever is present.

From a musician's point of view, the prayer is built like a verse with a repeating hook. Almost every clause in the longer passages is followed by the same returning line, "I am sorry, forgive me, I love you, I am grateful." The repetition is doing structural work. It keeps the listener anchored, and it makes the practice portable: the same four words can be said in traffic, at a desk, or in bed.

Why does the practice begin with you as the cause of your problems?

This is the most demanding move in the video, and it is stated plainly. At 1:51 the guide describes what to do whenever negative feelings arise:

"I ask forgiveness for having created and attracted that particular situation, and I recognize myself as a co-creator of my current reality and assume full responsibility for my problems." (Raissa Zoccal, guided Ho'oponopono meditation, 1:51)

The notion of co-creation is what makes the rest of the practice coherent. If you are the co-creator of your circumstances, then forgiveness is not something you wait to receive; it is something you give, starting with your own part. Readers will reasonably ask how this sits with real injustice. The video does not dwell on that question here. Its position is that responsibility is the ground from which forgiveness becomes possible, and that is a claim a reader can test against their own experience rather than accept on authority.

How far back does the forgiveness reach?

The circle widens. At 2:39 the prayer extends beyond the self:

"If I, my family, my relatives, and ancestors have offended you, your family, relatives, and ancestors in thoughts, words, deeds, or actions from the beginning of our creation until the present, we ask for your forgiveness." (Raissa Zoccal, guided Ho'oponopono meditation, 2:39)

Here the frame is generational. The offense is not located in one lifetime or one relationship; it is inherited and passed along. The prayer then asks that all "negative memories, blockages, energies, and vibrations" be cleansed and "transmute[d] into pure light." Later the guide declares peace "with all the people on Earth and with whom I have outstanding debts" (around 4:00). The scope is deliberately large, which is part of what distinguishes this from a narrower exercise in forgiving one person.

Can you forgive someone who keeps hurting you?

The hardest case is someone who appears to be harming you now. At 4:23 the guide says:

"I release all those from whom I believe I am receiving harm and mistreatment because they are simply returning to me what I received in some past life." (Raissa Zoccal, guided Ho'oponopono meditation, 4:23)

The past-life explanation is the teacher's belief, and the video presents it as such. What is practically interesting is the reversal that follows. Even while acknowledging it is difficult, the guide says "I am the one who asks forgiveness from this person now." The one who was wronged does not wait for an apology. She takes the first step, in private, with words. Whatever one thinks of the metaphysics, this is a clear inversion of the usual sequence, and it is the reason the practice is often described as relational rather than judgmental.

What do anxiety and bodily pain have to do with forgiveness?

The video does not confine the work to thoughts. At 6:20 the guide turns to the body directly:

"If my physical body experiences anxiety, worry, guilt, fear, sadness, pain, pronounce and think my memories, I love you, I am grateful for the opportunity to free you and myself." (Raissa Zoccal, guided Ho'oponopono meditation, 6:20)

The body is treated as a place where memory is held. Earlier, the prayer had asked the divine to cleanse "what is contributing to my scarcity," a phrase that links financial and emotional lack to the same underlying charge. The practical implication is that when fear or heaviness appears in the chest or gut, the reader is invited to name it, thank it, and release it, rather than argue with it. Readers with clinical anxiety or chronic pain should treat such a practice as a companion to professional care, not a replacement for it; the video itself makes no medical claims.

Why does the meditation end with an apology to the listener?

The closing turn is the most unexpected. At 8:29 the guide says the meditation is "my contribution to your emotional health, which is the same as mine," and then adds:

"I tell you that I am sorry for the memories of pain that I share with you, I ask forgiveness for joining my path to yours for healing, I thank you for being here for me, and I love you for being who you are." (Raissa Zoccal, guided Ho'oponopono meditation, 8:48)

Earlier in the video, at about 7:25, she had framed the whole practice as a "contribution to the healing of beloved Mother Earth." The closing apology reframes the listener as a co-participant rather than an audience. Healing is described as mutual and measured by how far each person has healed: "it is in the measure that you are healing." For a practice that begins with personal responsibility, ending by apologizing to the person you are speaking to is a fitting last movement.

How should a reader approach this practice today?

The video offers a clear method, and a reader can try it without accepting every claim. Start with the breath, as the video does. Choose one situation that carries charge, and set the intention the guide describes: take responsibility for your part, then say the four phrases. Repeat them through the day rather than only in a single sitting, since the teacher asks for exactly that. Keep the distinction between the practice and its explanations clear. The hertz language and the past-life account are her beliefs, and the video does not verify them. What a reader can test directly is whether a repeated phrase changes how a grievance sits in the body the next time it arises.

Where to go from here

Watch the full video and follow the breathing passages slowly, rather than reading the transcript as a script. Then try the four phrases for a single day, saying them at moments of irritation, worry, or bodily tension, and notice what shifts. The video's description points to a playlist of guided meditations on the same channel, which is a natural next step for anyone who wants to keep practicing with the same teacher's voice. The practice is simple to begin and asks for patience with the parts that are hardest to say.

[0:03] Deivison sits comfortably.

[0:07] I'm noticing the natural flow of his

[0:33] with each breath.

[0:37] The

[0:40] Pono Cloth is a technique known worldwide here in Camille.

[0:45] This is one of the most effective self-healing methods

[0:48] that exists because it

[0:51] emits frequencies in hertz that cleanse and

[0:54] cancel emotions that are generating

[0:56] negative situations in your life. The

[1:00] Pono Cloth cleanses

[1:01] and transmits all the emotional charge

[1:04] stored in us, freeing

[1:07] our body and mind from

[1:10] past memories that are constantly stored

[1:13] in our subconscious,

[1:17] creating and attracting undesirable circumstances and

[1:19] situations.

[1:26] The keywords of the Pono Cloth are pronounced

[1:29] at any time of day: I'm sorry, please

[1:35] forgive me,

[1:37] I love you,

[1:39] I'm grateful.

[1:42] And in any situation where I

[1:44] feel filled with negative feelings and

[1:48] emotions,

[1:51] I set my intention: I ask forgiveness

[1:56] for having created and attracted that

[1:59] particular situation,

[2:02] and I recognize myself as a co-creator of my

[2:07] current reality

[2:09] and assume full responsibility for

[2:12] my problems.

[2:14] It is with profound love and gratitude to the

[2:23] allows my evolution,

[2:29] thedivine

[2:33] creator, father, mother, son, all

[2:38] one.

[2:39] And if I, my family, my relatives, and

[2:44] ancestors have

[2:45] offended you, your family, relatives, and

[2:49] ancestors in

[2:51] thoughts, words, deeds,

[2:54] or actions from

[2:57] the beginning of our creation until the present,

[2:59] we

[3:01] ask for your forgiveness.

[3:03] Do not let this be cleansed, purified,

[3:07] released,

[3:10] cut, all negative memories, blockages,

[3:14] energies,

[3:16] and vibrations, and transmute these

[3:21] undesirable energies into

[3:24] pure light. And

[3:26] so it is.

[3:31] And to cleanse my subconscious of all

[3:35] the emotional baggage stored within it, I say

[3:38] again and again throughout my day the

[3:43] key words of the garment in the point: I am sorry,

[3:46] forgive me, I love you, I am

[3:52] grateful.

[3:55] I declare peace with all the people

[3:57] on Earth and

[3:59] with whom I have outstanding debts,

[4:02] and for this moment and in its time, for

[4:07] everything that displeases me in my

[4:09] present life, I am sorry, forgive me, I love you, I

[4:15] am

[4:17] grateful.

[4:22] AndI

[4:23] release all those from whom I believe I am

[4:26] receiving harm and mistreatment

[4:28] because they are simply returning to me what I received

[4:32] in some past life. I am

[4:36] sorry, forgive me,

[4:40] and I love you, I am

[4:43] grateful,

[4:45] and even though it is difficult for me to forgive

[4:49] someone, I am the one who asks forgiveness from this

[4:52] person now, for this moment

[4:56] and for all time,

[4:58] and for everything that displeases me in my

[5:01] present life,

[5:03] and I am sorry,

[5:06] forgive me,

[5:09] I love you,

[5:11] I am grateful.

[5:13] And it is

[5:16] for this sacred space that I inhabit

[5:19] daily and with which I do not feel

[5:21] comfortable,

[5:23] and I am sorry,

[5:26] forgive me, I love you, I am grateful.

[5:32] And for the difficult relationships from which

[5:34] you keep only bad memories, I am sorry,

[5:37] forgive me, I love you,

[5:43] I am grateful.

[5:46] And for everything that displeases me in my

[5:49] present life,

[5:51] [Music],

[5:52] my past life, my work, and what is around

[5:56] me,

[5:59] the divinity cleanses

[6:02] within me what is contributing to my

[6:04] scarcity, I am sorry,

[6:06] forgive me,

[6:10] and I love you, I am grateful.

[6:17] And if my physical body experiences

[6:20] anxiety, worry, guilt, fear, sadness, pain,

[6:27] pronounce

[6:29] and think

[6:31] my memories, I love you,

[6:35] I am grateful for the opportunity to

[6:39] free you and myself, I am sorry,

[6:44] forgive me, I love you,

[6:48] I am grateful.

[6:50] Hello, at this

[6:53] moment I affirm that I love you, don't even

[6:56] think about my emotional health and that of

[7:00] all my loved ones. I

[7:04] love

[7:07] and for me the needs to

[7:10] learn to wait without anxiety, without

[7:13] fear, I recognize

[7:16] the memories here in this moment

[7:19] [Music]

[7:20] I am sorry,

[7:22] I love you,

[7:25] my contribution to the healing of

[7:28] beloved

[7:30] Mother Earth, which is who I am, if

[7:35] I, my family, my

[7:38] relatives and ancestors have offended

[7:43] your family

[7:45] with thoughts, words,

[7:48] acts

[7:50] and actions from

[7:54] the beginning of our creation until the present,

[7:55] I

[7:57] ask for your forgiveness

[8:00] and let this cleanse

[8:02] and purify, release, cut

[8:07] all memories, blockages, energies,

[8:12] negative vibrations

[8:16] andtransmute

[8:19] these undesirable energies into

[8:22] pure light.

[8:23] Hi sweetie,

[8:29] and to conclude,

[8:32] I say that this meditation is my

[8:36] contribution to your emotional health, which is the

[8:40] same as mine, so

[8:43] be well, it is in the

[8:45] measure that you are healing,

[8:48] and I tell you that I am sorry for the

[8:53] memories of pain that I share with you,

[8:57] I ask forgiveness for joining my path to

[9:00] yours for healing,

[9:02] I thank you

[9:05] for being here for me,

[9:09] and I love you

[9:12] for being who you are,

[9:20] andthere.

Preguntas Frecuentes

In this guided meditation, Ho'oponopono is a practice of forgiveness built on four phrases that are repeated throughout the day and applied to situations that carry emotional charge. The teacher asks the practitioner to take responsibility for their part in a difficult situation, then say the phrases to cleanse stored memories and emotions.
The four phrases are I'm sorry, please forgive me, I love you, and I'm grateful. In the video they are said silently or aloud at any time of day, and the teacher uses them as a refrain after nearly every clause of her longer prayer.
The video claims the practice emits frequencies in hertz that cleanse and cancel emotions, but it offers no measurement or source for that claim. It should be read as the teacher's framework rather than a demonstrated mechanism.
The teacher describes releasing those who seem to harm you and then asking forgiveness of them yourself, even when it is difficult. She frames this as the one who was wronged taking the first step rather than waiting for an apology.
The teacher says that by recognizing yourself as a co-creator of your current reality, you assume full responsibility for your problems and can ask forgiveness for the situations you helped create. She presents this responsibility as the ground from which forgiveness becomes possible.
The teacher says the phrases can be pronounced at any time of day and recommends saying them again and again throughout the day. The video does not specify a fixed duration or number of repetitions.
