[0:04] Oh,
[0:25] shanty
[0:27] shanty
[0:30] shant.
[0:31] >> [singing]
[0:33] >> Om lead us from the unreal to the real.
[0:37] Lead us from darkness to light. Lead us
[0:40] from death to immortality.
[0:43] Om peace, peace, peace.
[0:49] Namaste and good morning.
[0:52] Let us start with a rolling m chant.
[0:58] Oh.
[1:21] Oh.
[1:24] [chanting]
[1:24] Oh.
[1:30] Oh.
[1:38] Oh.
[1:55] >> [music]
[2:11] >> The first two verses
[2:14] those you like you can chant after me.
[2:56] The supreme lord said, "Oh Arjuna, this
[2:59] body is termed as chetra, the field of
[3:02] activities. And the one who knows this
[3:05] body is called chetraya, the knower of
[3:08] the field by the sages who discern the
[3:10] truth about both.
[3:17] [snorts]
[3:23] sharak.
[3:45] Oh s of bharata, I am also the knower of
[3:49] all the individual fields of activity.
[3:52] The in understanding of the body as the
[3:54] field of activities and the soul and god
[3:57] as the knowers of the field. This I hold
[3:59] to be the true knowledge.
[4:06] Once more we will go into this for the
[4:10] third time.
[4:13] Today is by the way uh auspicious
[4:15] because it's the birthday of Shankar
[4:17] Achara. I had forgotten somebody
[4:18] reminded me this morning that it's the
[4:20] birthday of Shankarachara.
[4:23] Um Shankarachara is the most important
[4:25] figure in Adita Vidanta.
[4:28] He was u
[4:31] he lived about 1300 years ago in the
[4:35] south of India but he traveled all over
[4:37] India and he lived for only 32 years. a
[4:39] wonderful life in which he wrote
[4:41] commentaries on the upanishads and the
[4:44] um Bhagavad Gita and the um Brahma
[4:48] Sutras
[4:50] plus a numerous other works thus putting
[4:54] adwita vanta on a firm textual
[4:56] foundation.
[4:59] Um
[5:01] but Shankar Acharia is not the only
[5:03] acharia. The word acharia has a
[5:05] technical meaning. Achara means master
[5:06] or teacher. But achara has a technical
[5:09] meaning in this tradition. The one who
[5:11] writes a commentary a unique different
[5:14] commentary on the Brahma sutras. So
[5:17] Shankarachara wrote a commentary on the
[5:19] Brahma Sutras on the in the paradigm of
[5:22] the philosophy of adwita vanta non-dual
[5:24] vanta. But there were others there are
[5:26] multiple commentaries on the brahutras.
[5:28] There's the commentary of Rammanuja who
[5:30] lived some um 200 years after
[5:33] Shankarachara.
[5:34] Um so that becomes the foundation for
[5:38] the vishtad school of vidanta. So
[5:40] Rammanuja is also called Rammanuja.
[5:43] The word acharia is applied to him.
[5:45] Similarly Madwa who lived after
[5:48] Rammanuja who wrote a dualistic
[5:51] commentary on the Brahma Sutras that
[5:53] becomes the basis of the dualistic dwita
[5:56] school of um Vanta. Then there is Nimbar
[6:00] Achara who wrote a commentary which
[6:04] makes him the acharia of the dwita dwa
[6:07] dualistic non-dualistic school of vanta.
[6:12] Then there is um um you have Valhachara
[6:16] who wrote a commentary um and he is the
[6:20] acharia of the sudhad dwita the pure
[6:22] adwita school pure non-dualistic school
[6:24] of vanta which is purely dualistic
[6:26] actually if you look closely at it I
[6:28] think it was sort of fashionable at that
[6:30] time to call your school non-dualism and
[6:33] then add something else to it um then
[6:36] there is a commentary which gives the
[6:39] foundation of what is called the achin
[6:43] school of va vanta ainta means
[6:46] incomprehensible difference identity
[6:48] indifference
[6:51] school and that is the basis for the you
[6:53] know them as the iskcon the har krishnas
[6:56] yeah that that's also a school of vanta
[7:02] you
[7:04] will see there's a theme running here
[7:08] there's one question which all these
[7:10] schools are trying to answer that there
[7:12] is an ultimate reality that all of them
[7:15] agree but what's the relationship of the
[7:18] ultimate reality to us and this universe
[7:23] and if the answer is identity that they
[7:25] are all one reality uh then it's the
[7:27] non-dual school of vanta adwita vanta if
[7:31] it's the answer is that we are all parts
[7:34] of that ultimate reality
[7:37] not identical we're parts of that just
[7:39] like the hands and feet. They're all me,
[7:42] this body, but they're all parts of the
[7:44] body. The hands and the feet and the
[7:45] tummy and the head, they're parts of
[7:47] this one body. So, are we parts of that
[7:49] ultimate reality? That sometimes people
[7:52] mistake this for nonduality, but it's
[7:54] not. It's something called qualified
[7:56] nondualism, qualified monism.
[8:00] Or another answer could be they're all
[8:02] different. There is an ultimate reality
[8:04] and you are different from it. You are
[8:05] not God. That's blasphemy. You're not
[8:07] even part of God. You're distinct from
[8:09] God.
[8:11] uh that is the dualistic school of
[8:12] virant.
[8:14] Um or you might say there is some kind
[8:16] of identity and there's some kind of
[8:18] difference
[8:19] that accounts for the other schools of
[8:21] virant.
[8:22] In all of these
[8:25] it is only the non-dualistic school
[8:28] adant which is purely a path of
[8:30] knowledge and inquiry. All the rest are
[8:32] in some sense dualistic. In some sense
[8:35] you'll see there the approach is the
[8:39] traditional religious approach of God,
[8:42] belief in God, faith, devotion, worship.
[8:46] So that's why the Adwita school has
[8:49] become sort of a favorite, a darling of
[8:52] philosophers because it's the one purely
[8:55] philosophical school. The others are
[8:57] more theological. You already have to
[9:00] believe in something to make that work
[9:02] for you. But they are all beautiful.
[9:04] They especially on the path of love,
[9:06] path of devotion. The other schools are
[9:08] specialists in that. They are all bi
[9:11] schools, schools of devotion, faith in
[9:14] religion. Adita is a kind of an outlier
[9:17] that way. But which makes it more and
[9:19] more suitable for our day and age. The
[9:22] last 100 200 years we are a more
[9:24] rational age, a more skeptical age, a
[9:26] more uh um freethinking, inquiring.
[9:31] Science is prestigious now in this day
[9:34] and age just to say you start with faith
[9:36] start with belief and if you ask why how
[9:38] should I believe why should I believe sh
[9:40] don't ask this will not work so easily
[9:42] nowadays the people find it very
[9:45] difficult to believe
[9:48] I remember one of our um swamies who
[9:52] came he was teaching here in France and
[9:55] he started talking about devotion and
[9:57] bacti to god
[9:59] and some of the French um the followers
[10:02] of Vant at that time. This was a long
[10:04] time ago. He said, "Swami don't tell us
[10:07] about all that. We have our
[10:08] Christianity. We have our Judaism.
[10:11] So you're not telling us anything new.
[10:13] Talk about adwita non-duality. That's
[10:16] unique. That's extraordinary."
[10:18] So Shankarachara was the great acharia,
[10:22] the commentator. If you go to the
[10:24] Himalayas, Shankarachara is called the
[10:27] the Lord commentator. Bhagavan Bhashakar
[10:31] he has written the commentaries on these
[10:34] opishads and all but he is not the
[10:36] founder of Vanta
[10:38] not none of these acharas are founders
[10:40] of adant they don't claim to be also
[10:41] they claim to be commentators they give
[10:43] a specific philosophical perspective
[10:46] the foundation of adant goes back to the
[10:49] upanishads
[10:51] and
[10:53] Bhagavad Gita is based the text which we
[10:55] are using is based on the upanishads the
[10:58] Brahma sutras are based based on the
[10:59] oponyishads and indeed all Vanta texts
[11:01] which follow afterwards are based on the
[11:03] oponyishads
[11:05] but the roots are the opanishads
[11:08] and today we will inquire into this adic
[11:13] teaching that you are Brahman based on
[11:16] anotherishad today's approach will be
[11:19] based on the manduki opanishad
[11:22] of all the opishads it's the shortest
[11:24] it's also the most powerful only 12
[11:27] mantras direct
[11:29] The story I mentioned about Hanuman
[11:32] asking Ramachandra. Um Ram Hanuman asks
[11:36] Ramachandra those who want liberation,
[11:39] those who want freedom,
[11:41] how will they get freedom? And
[11:43] Ramachandra says for those who want
[11:46] liberation
[11:47] the manduka is sufficient.
[11:51] Mandukya alone is sufficient in
[11:53] Sanskrit.
[11:59] Mandukya alone is sufficient for the
[12:02] liberation of the seekers of liberation
[12:07] and suppose I don't get liberation by
[12:10] the mandukishad alone and then
[12:12] Ramachandra gives a list of 108ishads
[12:16] that should be enough to scare you
[12:20] and the mandukanishad
[12:22] is um centered around
[12:26] only the 12 mantras
[12:30] and it is basically the Omishad.
[12:33] It's centered around Om. The Om chanting
[12:35] which we are doing it all of the manduka
[12:38] indeed all of Vanta is packed into Om.
[12:40] And one of the beauties of Vanta is the
[12:43] elegance of Vanta is that all of Vanta
[12:48] can be packed into a very short compass.
[12:51] a single sentence, a single word, a
[12:53] single gesture.
[12:55] One master told me the skill of the
[12:56] teacher is to compress the ocean into a
[12:59] drop and to bring the ocean out from a
[13:02] drop. Can you put all these teachings
[13:06] into one sentence? Tell me in one
[13:08] sentence what are you talking about in
[13:10] one word or in one gesture
[13:13] and from that expand into the entire
[13:15] vantic corpus of all these texts
[13:18] thousands of years.
[13:20] So all these opishads whatever is
[13:23] contained in this 108ish is found in the
[13:25] 12 mantras of the manduki opanishad.
[13:28] Whatever is contained in the
[13:29] mandukanisha is found in a short
[13:31] sentence called the profound teachings
[13:34] or the great sentences mahabaka. The
[13:37] sentence you are that
[13:42] which you find in the chandog
[13:45] that itself can be expanded to the to
[13:47] the whole of adant but it can be
[13:49] compressed into you are that you are
[13:51] that or in others in the briadicad you
[13:57] find the statement I am brahman same
[14:00] meaning single sentence or in the
[14:03] mandukishad which I will use today you
[14:06] find The sentence I am atma Brahma this
[14:09] very self is the absolute. This very
[14:12] self is the absolute. Same meaning all
[14:14] these sentences mean the same thing.
[14:17] Another upanishadish
[14:19] has a sentence consciousness is the
[14:22] absolute.
[14:25] All of these sentences mean the same
[14:27] thing. You can reduce all of this to
[14:30] even not even a sentence one syllable.
[14:36] We'll see today how you can expand that
[14:37] into whole vdanta.
[14:39] You can um you can even shorten that
[14:43] compress that further into one. Whatever
[14:46] we are doing here, you can compress it
[14:47] into one gesture. It's called the chin
[14:50] mudra. The gesture of consciousness
[14:54] chit consciousness mudra gesture. So
[14:57] there are many of these hand gestures
[15:00] used in worship. They have significance.
[15:03] This is a um gesture and some of them
[15:06] are very complicated. You know in puja
[15:08] you learn to do that. [laughter]
[15:10] This is
[15:12] or like this for example.
[15:16] [laughter]
[15:17] So these are u all kinds of gestures are
[15:20] there and they have got different
[15:21] meanings but this is a very profound
[15:23] gesture. All of vanta is contained in
[15:25] this. What does it mean? So the three
[15:29] bodies the physical body this little
[15:31] finger then the subtle body our minds
[15:35] intellects
[15:37] memories ego all of that this one prana
[15:41] all of that this one and then there's
[15:44] the causal body which we don't
[15:46] understand too well it is the seed state
[15:49] what you experience in deep sleep this
[15:51] one and this is the ego I this is
[15:55] isolated separately I what am I as long
[15:58] as I think I'm these three this is our
[16:01] usual state what this is exactly this
[16:03] represents what we feel now
[16:06] and enlightenment is to say that I'm not
[16:08] the physical body I'm not the subtle
[16:10] body I'm not the causal body then
[16:12] automatically it will become clear I am
[16:14] pure consciousness this one represents
[16:15] pure consciousness so I am pure
[16:18] consciousness I am Brahman I am the
[16:20] witness consciousness I am awareness
[16:24] not the physical subtle or causal bodies
[16:27] This is the teaching of Vanta
[16:29] here.
[16:32] It can be made even shorter,
[16:35] even more compact. What is that?
[16:37] Silence.
[16:39] Shankarachara says in one of his hymns,
[16:44] the teaching was in silence and the
[16:46] doubts of the disciples were dispelled.
[16:48] So the disciples have come, people have
[16:50] come with questions and the master sits
[16:52] in silence and the silence, the
[16:54] thunderous silence of the master dispels
[16:56] all the doubts of the disciples. It is
[16:59] actually you would think that sounds
[17:01] cool but does this really work? You'll
[17:03] have to have disciples and masters like
[17:05] that. [laughter]
[17:06] But it it was seen to work. For example,
[17:08] Raman Namari if you read about him often
[17:12] he would sit in silence and people would
[17:14] come in with questions sit with him for
[17:16] a while and the questions would be
[17:17] dissolved. Maybe not solved but
[17:19] dissolved. They would become immaterial.
[17:23] Um so it is possible even silence
[17:26] communicates the vantic teaching. So you
[17:30] see the whole of vantic teaching how it
[17:31] can be compressed making it shorter and
[17:33] shorter and shorter. One of the most
[17:35] beautiful text is the um mandukishad
[17:40] and the mandukishad is basically a
[17:43] commentary on
[17:45] what is the meaning of
[17:49] mandukishad itself has been commented
[17:52] upon by shankarachara's guru's guru
[17:56] whose name was goapadara or godapada
[18:01] his disciple was goindapada and his
[18:03] disciple disciple was um Bhagavat Pad
[18:06] Shankarachara. So Shankarachara's guru's
[18:09] guru wrote four chapters a text on with
[18:13] four chapters on the mandukunishad. The
[18:16] 12 mantras of the mandukunishad embedded
[18:19] in the first chapter
[18:22] called the agamama praarana the section
[18:24] on the scripture because the opanishad
[18:28] is the scripture. So the 12 mantras of
[18:30] the upanishad is embedded there and
[18:32] multiple verses were written by Gorapada
[18:35] around it. Then the second chapter which
[18:38] he wrote entirely composed by God is
[18:42] called
[18:44] um the section on the falsity of the
[18:46] universe that the universe is an
[18:48] appearance
[18:49] and the third chapter is called
[18:54] the section on the nonduality of the
[18:56] ultimate reality nonduality
[19:00] and the fourth chapter is called
[19:03] Shantiarana is a very poetic way of it
[19:06] means means the uh quenching of the fire
[19:10] brand. The section on the quenching of
[19:11] the fire brand. Fire brand you know
[19:13] that's a old Buddhist metaphor. There is
[19:17] um like a fire brand or a coal or piece
[19:21] of burning charcoal and if you whirl it
[19:23] around it looks like a circle right so
[19:26] that's called the allah chakra or allah
[19:28] shanti praarana. Anyway, the fourth one
[19:32] is it deals with various schools of
[19:35] thought and an examination of various
[19:39] schools of thought from a non-dual
[19:41] perspective. So four chapters written by
[19:43] God and Shankarachara has commented on
[19:46] the opishad and the verses of God. So
[19:49] you if you study generally if you study
[19:51] and there are subcommentaries and sub
[19:52] subcommentaries also but generally if
[19:54] you study the mandukanishad it's not as
[19:57] easy as 12 mantras only. I said just om
[20:00] I've studied it no and then the 12
[20:04] mantras and even that's not enough you
[20:05] have to study the four chapters of
[20:07] goapad and that's not enough to
[20:10] understand that you have to study
[20:11] shankarachara's commentary so that's the
[20:13] classical way of teaching the manduk
[20:15] kyopanishad anyway all that is just
[20:17] background and today we just going to
[20:20] use the mandukuishad
[20:22] to unpack these two verses to understand
[20:25] just to do exactly what we did yesterday
[20:27] day before yesterday we did
[20:29] We use the method of sear and seen.
[20:32] Yesterday we used the method of the five
[20:34] layers of the human personality
[20:36] traveling to the cave of the human heart
[20:38] to discover our real nature. And then we
[20:41] used the 10 travelers story to find out
[20:45] who am I. Today we will use the
[20:48] mandukanishad.
[20:51] Um the way it works is this.
[20:55] Our life is actually has three phases
[20:59] every day.
[21:01] Now, right now, this is what we call the
[21:03] waking. And here we have uh the I am
[21:09] there with the mind, senses and body.
[21:12] And with my senses, I'm contacting an
[21:14] external world. A world of forms,
[21:18] colors, shapes through the eyes. A world
[21:21] of sound through the ears. A world of
[21:25] touch through the skin. A world of smell
[21:28] and order through the fragrance through
[21:30] the nose. World of taste through the
[21:32] tongue. And then I think about all of
[21:34] this and I have memories about all of
[21:36] this. I have a sense of ego. I have a
[21:38] sense of personality and I deal with
[21:41] other beings living beings and like
[21:43] myself human and non-human. So this is
[21:46] called the whole thing is called the
[21:49] waking
[21:50] the waking world. And this waking world
[21:55] is given a name. Uh
[21:59] uh.
[22:01] Now we fall asleep. At night you fall
[22:04] asleep. Sometimes in vidanta class you
[22:07] fall asleep
[22:08] and we forget the external world.
[22:12] Our eyes close. We don't hear. And we go
[22:15] into a world of dreams. Another
[22:17] experience comes. A world of dreams.
[22:20] There are people there too. It's all
[22:22] imagined. When we wake up, we we
[22:24] understand it was all in my mind. It's
[22:27] all imagined. But at that time, it feels
[22:30] pretty real. There are people there.
[22:32] There are places there. There's
[22:34] happenings there. There incidents. I'm
[22:35] also there. I'm also part of that world.
[22:39] This and it's very interesting. This eye
[22:41] is not the body of the waking eye. The
[22:43] body of the waking eye is forgotten. The
[22:45] waking world is forgotten. The body of
[22:47] the waking world is forgotten. I have a
[22:50] dream world. and a body in the dream
[22:53] world. A dream body. Huh? I've got a
[22:56] dream body and there I have something's
[22:59] happened there. That's another world.
[23:03] And in the mandukanishad, it's given a
[23:05] name. Ooh.
[23:08] Ooh.
[23:10] And then everything stops for a while.
[23:14] Deep sleep.
[23:16] There is no external world. There is no
[23:20] internal world of dreams just blank.
[23:23] There's nothing to see, hear, smell,
[23:25] taste, touch.
[23:27] There's nothing to think about, nothing
[23:29] to remember, nobody to remember. The ego
[23:32] is also gone.
[23:34] If you feel I am in deep sleep, ego is
[23:37] still functioning. Then you are not in
[23:38] deep sleep. In deep sleep, the ego is
[23:40] gone.
[23:42] So absolutely blank. But that blank is
[23:46] also a kind of experience of experience
[23:49] of nothing.
[23:51] It is not an absence of experience. It's
[23:54] an experience of absence.
[23:57] I remember once in one of our ashrams
[23:59] there was a conference on consciousness
[24:01] studies from philosophical perspectives,
[24:03] vantic perspectives and I mean Indian
[24:06] philosophy perspectives and modern
[24:07] neuroscience. So there was this
[24:09] neuroscientist and a professor asked him
[24:10] the question. I mean the neuroscientists
[24:12] and the philosophers could not agree.
[24:14] They're sort of arguing past each other.
[24:16] So at one point one of the professors
[24:18] asked the neuroscientist doctor tell us
[24:21] in deep sleep according to neuroscience
[24:24] is there consciousness or not? And the
[24:26] doctor said at that time this was more
[24:28] than 25 years ago now it's changed a
[24:30] little bit. At that time they said
[24:32] [snorts] that as we understand
[24:35] consciousness in neuroscience there's no
[24:37] consciousness in deep sleep. Deep sleep
[24:39] is unconscious.
[24:41] There's no consciousness in deep sleep.
[24:43] And the professor who's a professor of
[24:45] sananka philosophy and an American
[24:48] professor Gerald Larson who has written
[24:50] nice books on sanka he said well from a
[24:53] sananka perspective or vdanta
[24:55] perspective there is only consciousness
[24:57] in deep sleep according to neuroscience
[24:59] there is no consciousness in deep sleep
[25:01] deep sleep both agree upon that there is
[25:03] something called deep sleep you can't
[25:04] deny it everybody agrees but what
[25:06] happens there according to neuroscience
[25:09] everything is there only consciousness
[25:10] is not there and so that's our common
[25:12] sense understanding understanding vanta
[25:14] is just the opposite understanding. Only
[25:16] consciousness is there. Nothing else is
[25:17] there and that's why you have deep
[25:20] sleep.
[25:22] So this is the gulf between neuroscience
[25:24] and the uh eastern philosophical
[25:26] understanding of deep sleep. You know
[25:29] how we understand deep sleep is like
[25:31] this. Um one might say wait a minute if
[25:36] consciousness is there in deep sleep why
[25:39] don't we experience it?
[25:41] So the way it is shown is like this.
[25:45] Um
[25:46] you know
[25:49] I remember once seeing a comet in the
[25:52] sky many decades ago a few decades ago
[25:56] in the in the night sky and the tail of
[25:59] the comet is lit up. It's a gorgeous
[26:01] display like a fireworks display. Every
[26:03] night you can see the tail of the comet
[26:06] but the tail of the comet does not carry
[26:08] its own light. It's not it's reflecting
[26:10] sunlight. So as it comes into the solar
[26:12] system, it starts reflecting sunlight.
[26:15] That means where the comet's tail is,
[26:17] sunlight is there already.
[26:20] Without the comet, you can't see the
[26:22] sunlight. You need something to reflect
[26:24] the sunlight.
[26:26] So in the dark of space, it's actually
[26:28] full of light.
[26:30] You know, in at night when you see a
[26:32] satellite pass over, you see it's
[26:33] flashing. It's glittering. In the
[26:35] evening, sometimes you just see the
[26:37] satellites crossing the horizon. So
[26:39] sunlight is there although it's already
[26:41] evening or or night in the earth
[26:43] sunlight is right there. It's just you
[26:45] need a reflecting surface for it. In
[26:48] order to explain this sometimes I would
[26:49] do in conferences once I remember I was
[26:51] trying to explain this. This was um a
[26:53] conference in a place called Nalanda
[26:55] where the ancient Buddhist university
[26:57] was there. So
[27:00] um how can be there be consciousness and
[27:03] yet we don't experience it at all.
[27:06] Now I in the conference there were there
[27:08] was this projector for PowerPoint
[27:10] projections you know so it's a strong
[27:12] you know what it's like a strong white
[27:14] beam of light so I got an idea I I
[27:18] showed them I said look in that beam of
[27:22] light I'm thrusting my hand in there
[27:25] suddenly you will see its glare it's
[27:27] shining in in that light and I remove my
[27:30] hand
[27:31] right there in that space there is
[27:33] intense light but until I put my hand in
[27:36] there you won't see it.
[27:38] I put trust my hand in there suddenly
[27:40] you will see it is shining in in white
[27:43] light. If I remove my hand neither you
[27:45] see the hand nor do you see the light
[27:46] also. So to see the light you need
[27:49] something to reflect the light. The
[27:52] light may be there but it won't look
[27:53] like light. Similarly in consciousness
[27:56] to experience I am conscious
[28:00] you need the ego the eye. You need the
[28:03] mind. You need some experience, some
[28:06] object to to reflect consciousness for
[28:09] consciousness to illumin that object.
[28:12] Then both you'll be aware of. You'll be
[28:14] aware of the object and you'll be aware
[28:16] of the light. You'll be aware of the
[28:17] object, you'll be aware of
[28:18] consciousness. Then if you remove the
[28:20] object, consciousness is still there,
[28:23] but you don't experience it. It feels
[28:25] like deep sleep. It is that's deep
[28:27] sleep. And that in the manduk is given a
[28:30] name. M.
[28:33] And if you put these three sounds
[28:36] together, a
[28:38] oo
[28:40] m. If you put them together, you'll say
[28:44] the first impulse will be to say it.
[28:46] Yes, I know it's
[28:48] not.
[28:51] Om is the correct pronunciation because
[28:53] by the rules of Sanskrit grammar, a and
[28:57] u when you put them together, it becomes
[28:58] o.
[29:00] So therefore little knowledge dangerous
[29:02] thing
[29:04] you were pronouncing it correctly
[29:06] earlier. Now after listening to a u and
[29:09] we start pronouncing it ah now I know
[29:11] it's no it's not it is it is but has
[29:17] three sounds it's not o and m it is a u
[29:21] m so it and it is the entire range of
[29:26] sound when we start speaking making a
[29:29] sound we start with a
[29:32] and as you close the lips uh and the
[29:36] lips are completely closed.
[29:40] Try it.
[29:48] See, it sounds beautiful. It's the
[29:51] entire range of sounds the human mouth
[29:53] can make.
[29:55] There's a lot of profound symbolism
[29:57] here.
[29:59] For example, in Indian philosophy, there
[30:02] is word and object. Language refers to
[30:05] objects. So if I say flower, flower is a
[30:08] word. Flower is a word. But this is the
[30:10] object. This is flower.
[30:15] And
[30:17] all words refer to all objects.
[30:20] Language refers to the universe.
[30:23] Whatever is there nameable in the
[30:25] universe, you have corresponding names
[30:27] for it. So the all the words implies all
[30:30] the objects. All names, all words in the
[30:34] language refer to refers to the entire
[30:36] universe. But language is made of
[30:39] sounds.
[30:41] All words, possible words are made of
[30:43] sounds.
[30:45] So all these sounds are the basis matrix
[30:49] of language which refers to the
[30:50] universe. Sounds language universe.
[30:55] And all sounds are now compressed into.
[31:01] So is
[31:04] the basis of all language
[31:07] and all language represents entire
[31:10] universe. So Om is the basis of the
[31:12] entire universe. It represents the
[31:14] entire universe. You see the symbology
[31:16] in that.
[31:18] It's um as if the entire universe of
[31:21] experience is packed into that.
[31:24] All right. Now, keeping that in mind, we
[31:27] will
[31:29] uh dive into this
[31:34] the waking world, the dream world and
[31:37] the deep sleep world. This is the most
[31:40] powerful method of discovering who am I.
[31:44] The waking world. There are there are
[31:47] three here. The subject, the object, and
[31:50] the state. What's the state? Waking
[31:53] state. How do you define a waking state?
[31:55] Where we apparently consciousness
[31:58] contacts an external world with the help
[32:00] of senses and mind. That's the waking
[32:03] world. Dream world there's a state. It's
[32:07] called the dream state. Dream state of
[32:08] what? Waking state of what? Waking state
[32:10] of the mind. Dream state of the mind.
[32:13] Deep sleep state of the mind. In the
[32:15] waking in the dream state of the mind,
[32:18] consciousness remains confined within
[32:20] the mind and the mind generates various
[32:24] um forms and experiences and
[32:27] consciousness illumines that. That's
[32:29] called dream state.
[32:31] Third, deep sleep. There's a state, it's
[32:33] called the deep sleep state of the mind
[32:36] where consciousness, the subject and the
[32:38] object are mushed together as it were,
[32:41] are flattened together. There's no
[32:42] distinction between subject and object.
[32:44] It seems like a uniform darkness but
[32:48] that's called the seed state because as
[32:49] if from that the waking and dream come
[32:51] and disappear back into that. So you
[32:55] have three states. Waking state in
[32:58] Sanskrit, jagratasta or jagrata,
[33:02] dream state,
[33:04] swapnavasta in Sanskrit, swapna, dream
[33:08] and deep sleep state, sushupti in
[33:11] Sanskrit. These three states in each
[33:14] state there is a pair a pair a pair of
[33:18] subject and object. In the waking state,
[33:21] you are the subject. You, the person,
[33:26] you have, you are conscious. You have a
[33:28] mind and senses and a body. You are the
[33:30] subject. And what's the object? The the
[33:33] universe presented in the waking state.
[33:36] The universe presented in the waking
[33:38] state.
[33:40] In Sanskrit, there are names for this.
[33:44] Um the
[33:46] waker the subject is called vishua
[33:50] and the you need not remember these
[33:52] things just for completion I'm saying
[33:56] and the waking universe which is
[33:57] presented to you the object is called
[34:00] jagrata propancha the universe in the
[34:03] waking
[34:05] the word Sanskrit word propancha is also
[34:07] interesting puncha means five propancha
[34:10] means the five in detail what are the
[34:12] five space, air, fire, water, earth, the
[34:16] ancient cosmology. So five elements and
[34:19] the entire universe is supposed to be
[34:20] made of these five. Today we would use
[34:22] you know so many elements of the
[34:23] periodic table and so on. But anyway the
[34:26] five elements and the universe made of
[34:28] these five elements that's called
[34:30] propanch universe
[34:33] and that's presented in the waking
[34:35] state. So in the waking state now you
[34:37] have three waker the waking universe and
[34:40] the waking state. a state, an objective
[34:44] universe and a subject. You are the
[34:47] waker. This is your world. And this
[34:49] state is called the waking state. Now we
[34:53] go into a dream state. The mind goes
[34:55] into a dream state. You are the you are
[34:57] you'll be there in your own dreams but
[34:59] not as sleeping on the bed and dreaming.
[35:01] No, you'll be a there'll be there will
[35:03] be a dream world and you'll be there in
[35:05] the dream world walking around doing
[35:06] stuff, meeting people.
[35:08] So you the dream state is a second state
[35:11] and in the dream state there is a dream
[35:14] subject.
[35:15] Who is that? You. And what is your name
[35:19] there in Sanskrit? The dream subject.
[35:21] The dreamer. What's the name of the
[35:22] dreamer? In Sanskrit it is Taiasa.
[35:26] Taiasa.
[35:28] Again not important but the names are
[35:30] very evocative. Tajasa means the fiery
[35:32] one. Because in the waking state we are
[35:35] constrained as it were by the physical
[35:37] law by the body. In the dream state we
[35:39] are fiery in the sense we generate our
[35:41] own worlds. It's a much more freer state
[35:45] because we can visualize and generate
[35:46] our worlds. It's like a virtual world.
[35:50] So in the dream state there are three
[35:53] the dreamer the dream world and dream
[35:55] worlds keep changing fast. I saw a movie
[35:58] on the on the airplane. uh it's called
[36:01] inception with a very popular Hollywood
[36:03] movie. So dream state based on the dream
[36:05] state.
[36:07] So in the dream state there's a dreamer
[36:09] and there is a dream world and there's a
[36:11] state called the dream state in
[36:13] Sanskritasa
[36:19] and then we slip into a deep sleep state
[36:22] into a seed state blank like darkness.
[36:25] The light is there in the darkness but
[36:28] there's nothing to reflect that light.
[36:30] Consciousness is there. You are still
[36:31] there but there is nothing to experience
[36:35] there. The world the body has fallen as
[36:38] asleep. The senses are asleep. You don't
[36:40] experience the world. You don't see
[36:42] anything, hear anything, smell, taste,
[36:43] touch anything. Nor do we dream
[36:46] anything. The mind has also gone to
[36:48] sleep. So there is no ego also.
[36:52] And there is only consciousness. And
[36:54] this dark state of which we call the
[36:58] deep sleep. Just for the sake of
[37:00] completion we will say there is a deep
[37:02] sleeper and a deep sleep world and a
[37:05] deep sleep state. But the deep sleeper
[37:07] and the deep sleep world are not
[37:09] separate there. You cannot distinguish
[37:10] themselves. They just look like a
[37:12] uniform blankness there.
[37:14] So this is this completes the three. The
[37:17] first one the waking is called ah. The
[37:20] second one, the dream is called ooh. And
[37:23] the third one, deep sleep is called.
[37:26] Now,
[37:28] all this sounds complicated. It isn't.
[37:31] Relax.
[37:33] All this is just a description of our
[37:36] day. One must vant is doing is just
[37:39] labeling, giving it all sorts of names
[37:41] and but basically it's just repeating to
[37:44] us our own daily experience. If you
[37:46] think it is something very metaphysical,
[37:48] very deep, very abstract, all sorts of
[37:49] fancy names. No, no, no, no, no. It's
[37:52] everyday experience. Each of us, we
[37:55] experience all three every day. That's
[37:57] what we call a day. This is our waking
[37:59] state. Right now, tonight we'll fall
[38:02] asleep and dream. That will be the
[38:03] second state. And then we'll go for a
[38:05] while into deep sleep. That will be the
[38:07] third state. And then we'll wake up
[38:09] again.
[38:10] That's how we cycle through our days and
[38:12] nights.
[38:15] up to this is just a repetition just a
[38:18] labeling just a description of our daily
[38:20] experience where is vanta in all this we
[38:23] might ask so you've just given a nice
[38:26] map of what happens to me every day so
[38:30] now here comes the beauty of vanta vanta
[38:34] says there is a fourth a fourth waking
[38:38] dreaming deep sleep
[38:41] waker dreamer deep sleeper waking world,
[38:44] dream world, deep sleep world. Three
[38:48] each each has three in it. A state and
[38:52] subject and an object. State, subject
[38:54] and object. State, subject and object.
[38:56] These three. And now Vanta says there is
[38:59] a fourth.
[39:01] What is the fourth?
[39:03] It is that which underlies all three.
[39:07] It is you. After all, do you not say I
[39:10] was awake, I dreamt, I slept. And now
[39:14] I'm awake again. We claim all three
[39:17] states for ourselves.
[39:19] But who is that I who was awake and who
[39:22] dreamt and who slept and who's awake
[39:24] now? It can't be the individual waker,
[39:26] dreamer, sleeper.
[39:28] Because the waker, the waking subject is
[39:30] gone in the dream subject.
[39:34] The dream subject is gone when you fall
[39:35] asleep and the deep sleeper is gone when
[39:38] you wake up. Then who is common to all
[39:41] three? Are you with me? It's a very
[39:44] simple thing, but we don't notice it.
[39:46] It's right there. The
[39:49] [clears throat]
[39:49] door of the prison is open, which seems
[39:52] to be closed. Just push it, it'll open.
[39:57] It's right there.
[40:02] The one which is common to all three is
[40:05] called the fourth. One, two, three.
[40:08] Waker, dreamer, deep sleeper, fourth.
[40:11] And the fourth is just called the fourth
[40:13] in Sanskrit. Turya. The word turya is
[40:17] meant to represent pure consciousness,
[40:19] the self, the absolute. But in Sanskrit
[40:22] language, the word turya just means
[40:24] number four. Four.
[40:27] And the trick is to realize the four is
[40:29] not really a four. The four is a one
[40:33] which appears as three.
[40:36] There is one only which appears as
[40:39] three. This one consciousness which we
[40:42] are this pure consciousness, pure
[40:43] awareness,
[40:45] it appears in the waking state as waker
[40:49] you and your waking world.
[40:55] Here is a profound secret.
[40:59] We might agree to say that yes I am
[41:02] consciousness and in the waking state I
[41:03] appear as the waker and there is a world
[41:05] there. No, no, no, no, no. You the
[41:09] consciousness you appear as you the
[41:12] vaker and your world
[41:15] viveandra says one only exists it
[41:17] appears as nature and soul. There's one
[41:20] which appears as subject and object.
[41:23] There is one which appears as seer and
[41:25] seen. There is one which appears as the
[41:27] five sheets of the personality and the
[41:29] world.
[41:31] There's one underlying reality which
[41:34] appears as the waker and the waking
[41:37] world. Stage one waking state. That one
[41:40] alone appears as the dreamer and the
[41:42] dream world.
[41:44] That one alone appears as nothing. Deep
[41:47] sleep is the deep sleeper and the deep
[41:49] sleep blankness.
[41:52] There is one underlying reality which
[41:54] you are that you are which appears as
[41:58] waker and waking world.
[42:00] You are appearing as this person and
[42:03] everything else here in this universe.
[42:05] You are appearing as this person in the
[42:07] dream and everything in the dream
[42:09] universe and you are not appearing.
[42:12] That's the blankness of deep sleep. You
[42:15] continue through waking, dreaming,
[42:18] sleeping.
[42:20] You are the fourth.
[42:23] The difference between enlightenment and
[42:25] ignorance is in the waking state we
[42:28] identify ourselves with I am this guy
[42:31] and this is the world apart from me and
[42:34] the enlightened one will say I am
[42:36] appearing as the subject here and the
[42:38] objective universe
[42:40] I am both
[42:43] in the dream it's much easier to
[42:45] understand in the dream world you appear
[42:48] as the dreamer but the dream world is
[42:50] also you everybody good and sad, awful
[42:53] and miserable. Whatever happens in the
[42:55] dream world, it's you that we understand
[42:57] without vant also. When we wake up, we
[43:00] realize I was there in the dream and
[43:02] everything and everybody I saw in the
[43:04] dream was I
[43:07] and the deep sleep of course blank.
[43:10] Nothing appears. It's all in a potential
[43:11] state.
[43:13] So all these three three sets of three
[43:18] state subject object
[43:22] waking dreaming deep sleep all of these
[43:25] are appearances of one underlying
[43:27] reality that one is called the fourth.
[43:31] That one is called the fourth. How do
[43:33] you understand this? One good example is
[43:36] u I give I like the gold and ornaments
[43:39] example. This gold and the same gold is
[43:43] now fashioned into a necklace.
[43:46] It has a form.
[43:48] It has a name necklace and it has a
[43:51] particular use. You put it on your neck.
[43:53] Now the gold is melted. The necklace is
[43:55] melted down and the gold is used to make
[43:57] it into a bangle, a bracelet.
[44:01] And the bracelet has a form different
[44:03] from the necklace. It has a name
[44:06] different from the necklace. It's a new
[44:07] name, bracelet. and you put it on your
[44:09] wrist. Different name, different form,
[44:12] different use, but it's the same gold.
[44:15] Literally the same gold. There's nothing
[44:17] else there. And then the gold is melted
[44:19] down, maybe made into um a ring
[44:24] and it is a different form. You put it
[44:27] on your finger and you give it a
[44:30] different name, ring, but it's the same
[44:32] goal. Literally the same thing. No
[44:34] changes there.
[44:37] I remember giving this example
[44:40] in Fiji
[44:43] and uh
[44:45] um I didn't know that many of the people
[44:48] in the audience they belong to the
[44:52] profession of goldsmiths
[44:55] and one of them came afterwards to me
[44:57] and said Swami you're ruining our
[45:00] profession
[45:02] we charge so much and if you say it's
[45:04] just the same
[45:05] >> [laughter]
[45:06] >> to melt down someone's ornament and make
[45:08] it a new ornament out of it and you say
[45:10] it's just the same thing then I I can't
[45:11] justify charging so much
[45:14] yes it's a new form you put in a lot lot
[45:16] of work into it a new name and a new
[45:18] ornament but the material the reality is
[45:21] the same thing similarly one same
[45:24] reality appears as you and your world
[45:28] you the dreamer and your dreams you the
[45:31] deep sleeper
[45:33] you are Not the waker right now what we
[45:37] think we are. You are not the dreamer.
[45:40] You're not even the deep sleeper. You
[45:42] are that one, the fourth.
[45:45] And yes, you appear as the waker and the
[45:47] waking world. You appear as the dreamer
[45:49] and the dream world. You appear as the
[45:51] deep sleeper and the deep sleep blank
[45:53] state.
[45:55] Those are your appearances. You are
[45:57] shining forth. Really the fourth is not
[46:00] a fourth.
[46:02] Many people make a mistake on this
[46:04] because of the language fourth. So now
[46:06] we have to go beyond the waking and
[46:07] attain some fourth thing. No, where is
[46:11] the gold available?
[46:13] If I tell you the ornament, the necklace
[46:16] or the bracelet is not the reality. The
[46:18] reality is gold. If I ask you where is
[46:21] the gold available, you'll say right
[46:22] there in the necklace, right there in
[46:24] the bracelet, right there in the ring.
[46:27] You would not look for a new ornament
[46:29] called gold. You know the what is called
[46:33] gold is these three.
[46:37] Similarly don't look for a new atman
[46:40] Brahman absolute pure consciousness
[46:42] somewhere out there beyond this world.
[46:45] It is that pure consciousness alone
[46:47] which is appearing as you. The mind the
[46:50] body the personality and the enormous
[46:53] universe which you seem to inhabit.
[46:55] [snorts]
[46:56] All of it is an appearance of that
[46:58] underlying consciousness. one
[46:59] consciousness. It is the ground of this
[47:02] universe.
[47:04] And when you fall asleep, it is the
[47:06] ground of the dream universe. And when
[47:08] there's nothing appearing, it is the
[47:10] ground of the blankness of deep sleep.
[47:13] Just as gold is the ground is the
[47:15] reality of the necklace, the bracelet
[47:17] and the ring. It's a tremendous
[47:19] assertion.
[47:22] And the name given to each of them.
[47:26] And when we chant Om the entireity of Om
[47:30] is revealed.
[47:33] Remember Om is the basis of all language
[47:36] because it's the basis of all sound. And
[47:38] all language reveals the entire
[47:41] universe. And the entire universe
[47:43] according to Vanta is your waking
[47:45] universe, your dream universe and the
[47:47] deep sleep universe.
[47:49] What is the waking universe? It's what's
[47:51] called the gross universe. The physical
[47:53] universe in Sanskrit tula propancha
[47:57] the physical universe gross universe
[48:01] what is the dream universe it's called
[48:03] the subtle universe suk propancha
[48:07] what is the deep sleep state it's called
[48:09] the causal universe kapraancha
[48:13] so in in vanta the whole universe is not
[48:16] just this physical universe the universe
[48:18] is the physical universe the subtle
[48:20] universe and the causal universe
[48:23] The world as we know it and our internal
[48:27] world of thoughts, feelings, emotions,
[48:29] not just your own, the entire cosmic
[48:31] mind and the causal state which has a
[48:34] technical name in vanta maya all
[48:37] together is called the universe
[48:40] and it's represented by language and all
[48:43] language is sound and sound all sound is
[48:47] so represents this expansion of M is
[48:50] this mighty cosmos, physical, subtle,
[48:54] causal
[48:58] and technically the silence after Om
[49:01] represents this fourth. When we chant
[49:04] Om.
[49:08] When the M falls away and into silence,
[49:12] it's the fourth. It's your real nature.
[49:14] It is from that silence that the M
[49:17] emerges and into that silence the M
[49:19] disappears. It is that silence which
[49:21] emerges as the waking dreaming deep
[49:23] sleep and into that the waking dreaming
[49:26] deep sleep disappear. It is that silence
[49:29] which emerges as the physical universe,
[49:32] subtle universe and causal universe as
[49:35] the stool propa suka propancha
[49:38] and disappears back into that
[49:40] consciousness that that silence that
[49:42] silence represents pure being or pure
[49:44] consciousness satan.
[49:47] The same limitless existence
[49:49] consciousness which we saw yesterday.
[49:51] same pure consciousness which we saw day
[49:53] yesterday which he calls here the one
[49:56] knower of the field in all fields it's
[49:58] exactly the same
[50:02] so this is the grand description
[50:10] one of our swamies who established the
[50:13] vanta work in in South Africa he used to
[50:18] teach vanta with the help of wonderful
[50:21] stories. His name was Nisha Shananda
[50:23] Swami Nishra Shanandha. I'll tell you a
[50:25] story which he used to show the mandukia
[50:28] the teachings of the manduka.
[50:36] The busiest railway station in India is
[50:40] in Kolkata. The Hara station maybe those
[50:42] who have gone there. It's a sight to
[50:44] see.
[50:46] It's scary.
[50:50] Now he says the station master is
[50:54] standing on the platform number one and
[50:56] it says in those days there used to be
[50:59] even now it's there it's a famous train
[51:01] in India called the Raj Dhani Express.
[51:04] So the announcement is the Raj Dhani
[51:06] Express is coming on platform number one
[51:08] and the station master is watching. The
[51:10] Rajdani Express arrives. A lot of
[51:12] activity in sound. People are getting in
[51:14] and getting off and it's so busy.
[51:18] After some time, the express departs.
[51:20] The train departs this platform. The
[51:22] station master is still watching. He
[51:23] didn't come in with the train. He does
[51:26] not leave with that with the train. Next
[51:28] comes in a good train
[51:31] on the platform.
[51:33] There isn't many people coming. This
[51:35] maybe the driver and all. And it's sort
[51:37] of quiet. Not much activity. Then it
[51:41] departs. Station master is watching. It
[51:44] didn't come with the train. He didn't
[51:45] depart with the train. Next empty
[51:48] platform. There's nothing there. And the
[51:50] station master is watching. Now [snorts]
[51:52] this example,
[51:54] the Rajdani Express, that busy train
[51:58] with all its activity is our waking
[52:00] state.
[52:02] You are watching and here comes the
[52:04] waking state. You have to get up and
[52:07] brush and have your quick breakfast and
[52:09] rush, you know, send the kids off to
[52:11] school or something and go to office and
[52:13] work or you work from home or whatever
[52:15] it is and pay the bills and it's the
[52:17] express train. It has come. You are
[52:20] watching your consciousness. You're
[52:21] watching this but you're also active in
[52:24] that as the subject. There's a subject
[52:26] and the object and after some time it
[52:28] departs. The state changes. You fall
[52:31] asleep and then the good strain comes in
[52:34] the dream state. something smoky,
[52:36] something vague. Nothing much is
[52:37] happening. It's much more vague. It's
[52:39] not the industrial grade reality of the
[52:41] waking state.
[52:44] And then that also departs. Then what?
[52:47] Nothing. Blank empty platform. You're
[52:50] still watching that you the watcher. Uh
[52:54] that one is called the fourth.
[52:59] You are you do not come in with the
[53:01] waking state with all its activities,
[53:03] problems, prospects, ambitions, amazing
[53:06] stuff happening. You do not go out when
[53:08] this disappears
[53:10] and the world of dreams arrives.
[53:13] You do not disappear when the world of
[53:15] dreams departs and complete blankness is
[53:17] there. You are there watching all of
[53:20] them. You give light to all of that.
[53:22] Because of you, all of these are
[53:24] experienced. They arise. Of course, the
[53:26] train example has its limitations. The
[53:28] station master and the trains are diff
[53:30] different from each other. But just to
[53:31] show you that consciousness is the
[53:33] witness of
[53:35] of these three states, arrival and
[53:37] departure of these three states. The
[53:40] gold example, remember that the the gold
[53:43] example is even better because the gold
[53:44] makes up the entirety of the ornament.
[53:47] So you're the gold which makes up the
[53:48] entirety of you, the waker, and your
[53:51] waking world. Which means by the way
[53:54] nothing here is different from us. The
[53:56] real eye is not just this. It is this
[54:00] and everything else. In the dream for
[54:03] example in our dream worlds I feel I am
[54:07] this and you're all separate from me.
[54:08] But if this is a dream then when I wake
[54:10] up I'll realize all of this was imagined
[54:12] by me. None of it here. Nobody here was
[54:15] separate from me. Similarly here we are
[54:18] the one consciousness appearing as the
[54:20] subject and the entire universe. Every
[54:23] being here
[54:25] the question might arise that if I'm the
[54:28] one consciousness everything is in me
[54:30] the one consciousness I should know
[54:32] everything. I know only this much. I can
[54:36] only see you. I can't see outside this
[54:37] room. I can only hear what's going on
[54:39] here. I can't hear what's happening far
[54:41] away. Even here in this room, the tiny
[54:44] atoms and molecules, I can't see them.
[54:47] So if I'm the one consciousness in which
[54:48] all of this is arising,
[54:51] how is it possible that I know only a
[54:52] little bit and the rest is completely
[54:54] unknown to me? I seem to be a tiny
[54:56] consciousness that all that is outside
[54:58] me. No, no, no. Here's another important
[55:02] thing to realize.
[55:04] Consciousness and knowledge are
[55:06] different.
[55:09] The universe is present in you. the
[55:11] consciousness as the known and the
[55:13] unknown.
[55:15] Even in a dream, even in a dream which
[55:18] we all admit is entirely made up by my
[55:20] own mind. But when remember what happens
[55:22] in a dream, recall in the dream I seem
[55:25] to inhabit a virtual environment. I'm
[55:28] seeing some of it. I see only this
[55:31] little bit. I'm seeing if suppose I'm
[55:33] seeing this in a dream.
[55:37] Now will I say in the dream only this
[55:40] much is reality beyond this there's no
[55:42] Spain and Europe and the world or the
[55:44] universe? No because I don't see it. No,
[55:48] in the dream also I will feel there's a
[55:49] world only a part of that world I'm
[55:52] seeing. I'm only seeing you. There are
[55:54] surely other people also. So in the
[55:56] dream also there is known and unknown,
[55:58] seen and unseen, heard and unheard in
[56:01] the dream.
[56:03] Are you with me?
[56:05] >> Yeah. In a computer simulation, in a
[56:08] virtual world, you have you put yourself
[56:11] into that virtual world. That's called
[56:13] an avatar. The Sanskrit word avatar is
[56:15] used in computer games nowadays. You put
[56:18] yourself as an avatar in a virtual
[56:19] world. And that avatar walks around in
[56:21] only a tiny part of the virtual world.
[56:24] But the whole virtual world is there.
[56:26] From the perspective of that avatar,
[56:28] only a tiny bit is known. But the rest
[56:30] of it is also simulated.
[56:33] And not only that, very interesting. A
[56:35] computer scientist said actually what
[56:37] you see in a virtual world whatever you
[56:39] are seeing that is being generated and
[56:40] rendered for you so that you can see it
[56:42] now. The rest of it is in a um
[56:44] unmanifest state. It's there but it's
[56:48] not being rendered because that's a
[56:49] waste of computer power because you're
[56:50] not seeing it. The moment you turn
[56:52] around and look at it, it'll be rendered
[56:53] for you.
[56:55] Donald Hoffman who is a cognitive
[56:57] psychologist in UC Irvine he says the
[57:00] latest neuroscientific studies of our
[57:03] brain shows that's what our brain is
[57:04] doing it's rendering the world as we
[57:07] focus on it the rest of it fades back
[57:10] into blank into a kind of haze and
[57:14] that's natural otherwise very difficult
[57:16] to maintain all that too much computing
[57:18] power is necessary otherwise and not
[57:20] necessary also to render everything
[57:23] anyway that's just by the Okay.
[57:25] So just like a dream world here also
[57:28] there is something known and a lot that
[57:30] is unknown and both our appearances in
[57:33] consciousness.
[57:35] The whole universe in is in you the
[57:37] consciousness. A tiny bit of it as known
[57:39] and the rest of it is unknown. That
[57:41] which is unknown can become known. If
[57:43] you go there and use your sight and
[57:45] years and science and technology will
[57:47] become known. This will become unknown
[57:48] then. But all of it is still in
[57:51] consciousness as known and as unknown.
[57:53] So it's not a valid objection to say if
[57:56] it is all in consciousness I should know
[57:58] everything. No, not necessarily.
[58:01] Is it possible to know everything? Not
[58:03] for us with this human mind. But the
[58:06] whole idea of God is that there can be a
[58:08] consciousness which can know everything.
[58:10] The omniscient consciousness. Then you
[58:12] have you would have to be the god of
[58:13] this universe. Not a ja. But apart from
[58:17] the god and the ja is this one
[58:19] underlying consciousness which the whole
[58:21] universe appears and disappears in that
[58:23] and that you are. So this is the
[58:26] analysis of the three states. This is
[58:28] the meaning of analyze into m
[58:35] and that when you chant together the
[58:38] silence afterm represents the underlying
[58:40] reality.
[58:43] Which am I? Am I the silence afterm or
[58:47] am I the sound M? Both.
[58:51] You are the silence and that emerges as
[58:54] the sound. Am I the pure consciousness
[58:56] or this universe? Both. You are the pure
[58:59] consciousness which appears as the
[59:01] universe. There is no both there.
[59:03] There's only one.
[59:06] If you ask what is the reality, the gold
[59:08] or the necklace? I have to say both. But
[59:11] it's not both. It is the same thing.
[59:14] The gold alone is appearing as the
[59:16] necklace. The gold alone is appearing as
[59:17] the bracelet. The gold alone is
[59:19] appearing as the ring. You alone are
[59:21] appearing as waker and waking universe.
[59:23] You alone are appearing as dreamer and
[59:25] dream universe. You alone are appearing
[59:27] as deep sleeper and deep sleep
[59:29] blankness. You are the reality. This is
[59:32] your appearance. Shankarachara in his
[59:34] commentary on this upanishad
[59:37] uses a beautiful phrase maya.
[59:42] Fourth counting in Maya
[59:47] 1 2 3 4. But the first 1 2 3 are
[59:51] appearances. The reality is the fourth.
[59:53] What is 1 2 3? Waker and waking world.
[59:56] Dreamer and dream world. Deep sleeper
[59:59] and deep sleep world. He says they are
[1:00:01] maya. They are appearances. Appearances
[1:00:03] of what? The underlying one which you
[1:00:06] are.
[1:00:08] It's like necklace, bracelet and ring
[1:00:11] are appearances, names, forms and use
[1:00:13] imposed on one. What is that? Gold.
[1:00:21] What is the use of this kind of
[1:00:22] analysis?
[1:00:24] If we think gold is just this, the
[1:00:27] reality is just the necklace. The moment
[1:00:29] the necklace is melted and made into a
[1:00:31] bracelet, we will say, "Oh, the reality
[1:00:33] is gone. It's it's dead. It's gone.
[1:00:36] Alas, alas." No, nothing is gone. Just
[1:00:39] the shape has changed, the name has
[1:00:41] changed, the use has changed, the
[1:00:43] material is exactly the same material,
[1:00:45] the same gold.
[1:00:48] Similarly, when we identify ourselves
[1:00:50] with this guy, when this body ages and
[1:00:54] disease comes and I feel I am
[1:00:56] deteriorating, I'm going and then death,
[1:00:59] oh, gone. No, it's not gone. I am the
[1:01:03] one consciousness which is completely
[1:01:05] undecaying. It's always it was there is
[1:01:08] there will continue to be there. It
[1:01:09] appeared as this waker in the waking
[1:01:11] world. Now it will appear in some form
[1:01:14] as another waker in the waking world you
[1:01:16] know rebirth in that form. Every day it
[1:01:19] appears as the dreamer in the dream
[1:01:20] world and then it does not appear in
[1:01:22] deep sleep. But I am constant.
[1:01:28] Vidyaranya Swami the author of the text
[1:01:30] classic text punchadashi
[1:01:32] he says thus goes our days. This is the
[1:01:36] story of one day. Whatever I said till
[1:01:38] now, waker, dreamer, deep sleeper.
[1:01:40] Waking, dreaming, deep sleep. Story of
[1:01:42] one day. What will happen tomorrow?
[1:01:44] Same. Waking, dreaming, deep sleep. What
[1:01:47] will happen a month later? Ma,
[1:01:54] as the years roll by, as the centuries
[1:01:57] roll by, eons roll by, consciousness
[1:02:00] continues to shine.
[1:02:05] It does not rise or set. The sun of
[1:02:07] consciousness is constantly shining. It
[1:02:10] does not rise or set. You say just a
[1:02:13] minute. You said centuries roll by but
[1:02:15] my body will die. I will die then. Body
[1:02:18] will die. You don't die. Other bodies
[1:02:22] will come. Other lives will come and go.
[1:02:26] You remain as pure consciousness.
[1:02:29] So as the centuries and eons roll by,
[1:02:32] you are eternal. The states come and go,
[1:02:35] the worlds come and go, bodies and lives
[1:02:38] come and go. You're fine.
[1:02:43] This limitlessness is happiness is is
[1:02:47] fulfillment. One monk said, "So, oh
[1:02:51] monks, now reflect there is no death
[1:02:54] anywhere for you. No death.
[1:02:57] There is no darkness anywhere for you
[1:02:59] because it's all light. It's all
[1:03:00] consciousness in deep sleep also same
[1:03:02] consciousness at the end of the universe
[1:03:04] also the same consciousness in
[1:03:05] anesthesia also in samadhi also same
[1:03:08] consciousness there's no darkness
[1:03:09] anywhere for you [snorts] and there is
[1:03:11] no suffering anywhere for you I'm just
[1:03:14] summarizing and translating the Hindi he
[1:03:17] said
[1:03:24] there is no death for you there is no is
[1:03:28] difficult to translate insensienc
[1:03:30] non-conciousness darkness for you and
[1:03:33] there is no suffering anywhere for you
[1:03:35] from that perspective. The moment you
[1:03:38] stick to one name and form you're in
[1:03:40] trouble.
[1:03:43] So this is what this analysis does.
[1:03:46] Waking, dreaming, sleeping. One monk
[1:03:50] um Bhikshu Shankaranandha he was in
[1:03:53] Rishiesh in no haridoir this was in the
[1:03:56] 1930s or 40s 50s probably
[1:04:01] now he was a non-dualist a radical
[1:04:02] non-dualist monk
[1:04:05] and he had only a loin cloth which he
[1:04:08] wore and he would lie down on a cot but
[1:04:09] many people would come to him to learn
[1:04:11] somebody asked you are a non-dualist
[1:04:13] non-dualists have lots of books where
[1:04:16] are your books
[1:04:17] you know, supposed to be scholarly,
[1:04:19] philosophical. And the monk said, "Ah, I
[1:04:22] have three books which I read every day.
[1:04:26] Waking, dreaming, and sleeping, and they
[1:04:29] show me that I am the lord of this
[1:04:31] universe, pure consciousness."
[1:04:34] Yeah.
[1:04:36] All right. I'll stop here
[1:04:39] and um
[1:04:42] let me just present before you the
[1:04:44] seventh mantra of the mandukish where
[1:04:47] all of this is brought together. In the
[1:04:49] earlier month 12 mantras I said in the
[1:04:52] earlier mantras we are introduced to Om
[1:04:54] we are introduced to um waking dreaming
[1:04:58] sleeping in the seventh mantra of the
[1:05:00] mandukishad
[1:05:03] one of the most glorious passages in
[1:05:05] entire vantic literature soaring passage
[1:05:08] you're introduced to your real nature
[1:05:10] the fourth so let me just tell you that
[1:05:13] and translate and up.
[1:05:21] This is one of my favorite vidantic
[1:05:23] texts. One of which I shared with you
[1:05:25] was yesterday.
[1:05:29] Brahman is infinite existence
[1:05:31] consciousness. Another one is this one.
[1:05:35] What is this talking about? The fourth
[1:05:37] our real nature. What we are till now
[1:05:40] what was talked about is already part of
[1:05:42] our experience. You don't need vanta for
[1:05:44] that. Who? You don't have to tell me
[1:05:46] that I am I'm awake. You don't have to
[1:05:48] tell me that I dream. You don't have to
[1:05:50] tell me that I fall asleep sometimes.
[1:05:52] That's all you need in vant. It's one of
[1:05:54] the beauties of vanta.
[1:05:56] You don't need faith in anything.
[1:06:00] Just take a look at your daily
[1:06:01] experience. You don't even need
[1:06:04] extraordinary experiences. Yoga or
[1:06:06] mysticism is the path of extraordinary
[1:06:09] experiences.
[1:06:10] A vision of God in some particular form.
[1:06:12] Those are genuine. These happen and they
[1:06:14] are very life transforming. But Vanta
[1:06:17] goes beyond that also. Vanta takes the
[1:06:19] utterly ordinary, what is daily present
[1:06:23] and gives us new eyes to look into it.
[1:06:26] To look into it with new eyes.
[1:06:29] What is daily present? Waking, dreaming,
[1:06:31] sleeping. That's all you need to start
[1:06:33] Vanta. But now in the seventh mantra
[1:06:36] which I'm going to say something new is
[1:06:38] said which we didn't know and which is
[1:06:41] the point of vanta.
[1:07:11] What was said? Who are you? Who am I?
[1:07:16] It starts with you are not the dreamer.
[1:07:19] You are not the waker. You are not the
[1:07:22] deep sleeper. You're not something in
[1:07:25] between. Somebody might ask, "Yeah, I
[1:07:28] understand all that. But what about coma
[1:07:30] or what about samadhi or what if if I
[1:07:34] am, if you are in New York, I'm high on
[1:07:36] weed.
[1:07:38] I'm neither awake nor sleeping something
[1:07:41] on something in between. It says
[1:07:45] not any in between state either. You're
[1:07:48] none of that.
[1:07:50] Then I'm not conscious at all. Maybe
[1:07:52] like a rock or stone. Not even that. Not
[1:07:54] a pragam. Not non-concious either.
[1:07:59] And then it goes on. You're not
[1:08:02] something that can be seen, heard,
[1:08:04] smelled, tasted, touched because you
[1:08:07] don't have a form. You don't have a
[1:08:08] sound. You don't have a taste. You don't
[1:08:10] have a smell. You don't have a touch.
[1:08:12] The five senses cannot objectify you.
[1:08:17] You are not something that can be
[1:08:18] thought about.
[1:08:20] Mind cannot think about you because the
[1:08:22] mind is lit up by you. You are the light
[1:08:25] of the mind. The mind cannot turn around
[1:08:28] and look at you.
[1:08:30] You cannot be objectified by language.
[1:08:34] Language cannot objectify you.
[1:08:38] One might ask two questions at this
[1:08:40] point. Hey, wait a minute. We are using
[1:08:44] language.
[1:08:46] We are using language. What? First of
[1:08:48] all, why can't language speak about
[1:08:50] language speaks about the whole
[1:08:51] universe? All reality is described by
[1:08:53] language. So why can't language reveal
[1:08:55] the ultimate reality about ourselves?
[1:08:57] Why not? And the second question we
[1:08:59] might ask is but you are using language.
[1:09:02] You are using the seventh mantra is
[1:09:04] talking about the ultimate reality. So
[1:09:06] how is it that you say it's beyond
[1:09:07] language? There's a whole discussion on
[1:09:09] the philosophy of language. Shank that's
[1:09:11] where Shankarachara's commentaries.
[1:09:13] Arurbindo, have you heard of Arurobindo?
[1:09:16] He says that
[1:09:19] probably the greatest metaphysical
[1:09:20] genius that ever lived Shankarachara and
[1:09:22] one of the great services he has given
[1:09:25] us is that he stands between us and the
[1:09:29] upanishads. Upanishads are so ancient
[1:09:31] from us it will be difficult for us to
[1:09:32] comprehend what they are saying. So he
[1:09:35] interprets the opishads for us moderns
[1:09:38] and he is 1,200 years ago. Upanishads
[1:09:40] are 5,000 years ago.
[1:09:43] So he gives an explanation why cannot
[1:09:46] language um reveal the ultimate reality
[1:09:49] pure consciousness who you are. The
[1:09:51] fourth
[1:09:52] shankarachara shows that what can
[1:09:56] language do and what can it not do. So
[1:10:00] language works when one of five factors
[1:10:02] are present.
[1:10:03] One if there is um a category he gives
[1:10:08] the example of a cow. Um a cow is an
[1:10:11] animal and it belongs to a certain
[1:10:13] category of animals. So if an individual
[1:10:16] belongs to a certain category, a
[1:10:17] species, a class, a set, then you can
[1:10:20] use the set to refer to that individual.
[1:10:22] But Brahman the ultimate reality nondual
[1:10:24] there's no set there. There's no
[1:10:25] category or or class there. So you
[1:10:27] cannot use a class set or category to
[1:10:30] refer to the ultimate reality. Are you
[1:10:32] with me? This is second um quality. You
[1:10:37] can use quality to refer to something.
[1:10:38] quality means um for example I can say
[1:10:41] yellow flower and purple flower now you
[1:10:44] know what I'm talking about when I say
[1:10:46] yellow flower you know I'm talking about
[1:10:47] this when I say purple flower you know
[1:10:49] I'm talking about this so I'm using
[1:10:52] yellow and purple the tall man the short
[1:10:56] person you know who I'm talking about
[1:10:58] we're using a characteristic a property
[1:11:02] can you do you do that but Brahman the
[1:11:04] ultimate reality is supposed to be nuna
[1:11:07] beyond attribute No property there. So
[1:11:09] you can't use property
[1:11:11] characteristic quality. You can't use
[1:11:14] that because Brahman is beyond any
[1:11:16] attributes.
[1:11:17] Third action.
[1:11:20] Congratulate the cook. The food is
[1:11:22] delicious which it is.
[1:11:25] Congratulate the cook. Now how do you
[1:11:28] know whom I mean by action? The one who
[1:11:30] did the action of cooking or cleaning or
[1:11:33] driving. Action.
[1:11:36] So action can refer to something. Can
[1:11:38] you refer to Brahman the ultimate
[1:11:40] reality by action? No. Brahman has no
[1:11:42] action. It's beyond any any activity.
[1:11:44] Nishka without any activity. You can't
[1:11:47] use action.
[1:11:48] Then relation. [clears throat] Can you
[1:11:51] use uh relation? One way of you know the
[1:11:55] students or the teacher, the father or
[1:11:57] the children. These are all relational
[1:11:59] terms. Can you use relation to refer to
[1:12:02] Brahma? No. It's nondual. To have
[1:12:04] relation you need a second but there's
[1:12:07] no second apart from Rahman. So
[1:12:09] non-duality means you cannot use
[1:12:10] relation relational language. And
[1:12:14] finally forget all that just give it a
[1:12:16] name and be done with it. Just call it
[1:12:18] something. That's what we do to a baby.
[1:12:20] We call the baby something. Give a name.
[1:12:23] It doesn't necessarily have to have any
[1:12:25] particular meaning for the baby. The
[1:12:27] name has a meaning but doesn't have to
[1:12:29] be any attribute of the baby. just a
[1:12:31] name Ram or Sitha or John or Mary or
[1:12:34] Krishna it's a name so just give it a
[1:12:37] name but you can't do that either why
[1:12:40] not to give a name to something it's
[1:12:43] called an ostensive definition you point
[1:12:45] it out this one is called X that one is
[1:12:48] called Y but you can't point out Brahman
[1:12:52] if I don't point it out
[1:12:55] I if I say call that one you'll say
[1:12:57] which one I I won't tell you then you
[1:13:00] can't
[1:13:02] You have to point it out. Can you point
[1:13:04] out Brahman? You can't.
[1:13:08] So the word, notice the words which are
[1:13:09] used.
[1:13:11] Brahman, the vast. Huh? What does it
[1:13:13] mean? What vast? If you say vast um
[1:13:17] wealth or vast sky, you can point out a
[1:13:21] vast valley. Look out there, you'll find
[1:13:23] it on the pathless path. A vast valley.
[1:13:26] But if you just say vast, what do you
[1:13:27] mean? Doesn't refer to anything.
[1:13:30] So
[1:13:32] language cannot be used. These are the
[1:13:34] five things that language can do. Can
[1:13:36] they can use uh class, quality, action,
[1:13:41] relation or just naming and none of them
[1:13:45] work for Brahman. So Brahman cannot be
[1:13:47] the absolute cannot be um indicated by
[1:13:50] language. But then the second question
[1:13:52] would be you are using language.
[1:13:55] So Vant has developed a strategy for
[1:13:57] using language where language cannot be
[1:14:00] used. There are multiple strategies. One
[1:14:02] strategy is negative.
[1:14:05] If I cannot say what Brahman is, I can
[1:14:07] say what it is not. Notice most of the
[1:14:09] language here used is negative. It's not
[1:14:12] this, not that. It's not the waker, not
[1:14:15] the dreamer, not the deep sleeper, not
[1:14:17] the waking state, not the dream state,
[1:14:18] not the deep sleep state.
[1:14:21] It is not physical, not subtle, not
[1:14:23] causal, not not not. I can say what it
[1:14:26] is not. If language cannot say what it
[1:14:30] is, you can say what it is not. This is
[1:14:32] called via negativa in Latin. The
[1:14:35] negative description. Often in theology,
[1:14:38] it is used to describe the ultimate
[1:14:39] reality. But there are other strategies
[1:14:42] also. Vanta uses other strategy. Implied
[1:14:44] meaning or paradoxical language. farther
[1:14:48] than the farthest, nearer than the
[1:14:49] nearest. It moves and it does not move.
[1:14:52] Uh what is night to the enlightened is
[1:14:55] day to the waking. What is day to the
[1:14:57] waking is night to the enlightened. So
[1:15:00] paradoxical language. Greater than the
[1:15:03] greatest, smaller than the smallest.
[1:15:06] Not just for sounding cool. It has a
[1:15:08] deep meaning. It points to the reality
[1:15:10] without actually saying what it is.
[1:15:14] Language.
[1:15:16] I remember I was having a big debate
[1:15:19] with uh a quarrel almost with one of the
[1:15:22] cutting edge AI people in the world
[1:15:24] today. You know you have heard of this
[1:15:26] Gemini AI and Google we use it. So the
[1:15:29] person in charge of the Gemini research
[1:15:32] whole thing in Google. Brilliant person.
[1:15:34] He he was saying that AI can be
[1:15:37] conscious and I was saying AI is not
[1:15:38] conscious and so we are debating. Um I
[1:15:41] said look AI can never become
[1:15:44] enlightened because um you know it's a
[1:15:47] large language model and the reality is
[1:15:49] beyond language. So that's one thing
[1:15:51] that it can't it can't grasp that
[1:15:53] although you can talk about it can't
[1:15:55] grasp it and his answer was brilliant.
[1:15:57] He said look even if that reality is
[1:16:00] beyond language you as a vidanta teacher
[1:16:03] you use language to convey that reality
[1:16:05] and that language which you use to
[1:16:07] convey Brahman or atman is now available
[1:16:09] to AI. [laughter]
[1:16:11] So why can it not grasp?
[1:16:14] Anyway, so this was the discussion
[1:16:19] beyond lang beyond language. All of this
[1:16:21] to explain one term beyond language.
[1:16:26] Then it is it cannot be inferred. So
[1:16:29] it's beyond the range of science or
[1:16:31] mathematics. And all of these are
[1:16:33] reasons why it cannot be done. Can you
[1:16:36] say anything anything positive about it?
[1:16:39] It says yes.
[1:16:43] It is that which the eye sense points
[1:16:46] towards
[1:16:50] or it is the essence of the eye sense.
[1:16:52] This I when I say I
[1:16:55] it's not exactly the eye because if
[1:16:56] exactly the eye is ego but what the eye
[1:16:59] points towards or the essence of Ika
[1:17:03] atma
[1:17:04] sum means essence or another way anaram
[1:17:09] shankarachara says if you follow the eye
[1:17:11] sense back to its source you'll get it
[1:17:15] why why will you get it because it is
[1:17:17] you it is you
[1:17:20] you are That
[1:17:23] only in general when we say I it means
[1:17:25] the ego and the body and the mind. But
[1:17:27] if you follow the eye back to its source
[1:17:29] you will find it.
[1:17:32] Then he uses these are very profound
[1:17:34] words he uses a word
[1:17:36] sham which means the silence of the
[1:17:38] universe.
[1:17:40] That is the silence of the universe. In
[1:17:42] that
[1:17:44] there is no waking universe, no dream
[1:17:48] universe, no causal universe. Although
[1:17:50] it appears as the waking, dreaming and
[1:17:52] causal universe, in reality that is just
[1:17:55] consciousness. Just like in reality,
[1:17:58] follow this. The gold ornaments in the
[1:18:02] gold there is no necklace, there is no
[1:18:05] bracelet, there is no, you know, ring.
[1:18:11] If I show you the gold, if I show you a
[1:18:14] golden necklace, you see, yep, there's a
[1:18:16] necklace. But if I tell you the reality
[1:18:18] is gold. You say, "Yep, okay, I
[1:18:20] understand. The reality is gold." In
[1:18:22] that gold, is there a necklace? It's
[1:18:25] like, let me ask you, this table is made
[1:18:28] of wood,
[1:18:30] right? This table is made of wood.
[1:18:33] In this wood which constitutes the
[1:18:35] table, where is the where is the table?
[1:18:39] Where is the table in this wood?
[1:18:42] Let me put it another way. When I touch,
[1:18:45] do I say touch table or touch wood?
[1:18:48] Touch wood.
[1:18:52] Is the table a part of this wood?
[1:18:56] It's very peculiar. If you ask questions
[1:18:58] like that, clearly you are seeing a
[1:18:59] table. You're clearly seeing a table. Is
[1:19:03] the table a part of the wood? That this
[1:19:04] part of the wood is called a table. Not
[1:19:07] this part. That is the table. No.
[1:19:11] Is the table a product of the wood?
[1:19:14] Is the wood doing something which makes
[1:19:15] a table? No.
[1:19:18] Is the table a quality of the wood is
[1:19:21] like smooth to the touch. Is the table a
[1:19:24] quality of the wood?
[1:19:26] No.
[1:19:29] Nothing. You'll never find if you
[1:19:31] examine it in that way, you'll never
[1:19:32] find a table there. And yet there's a
[1:19:34] table right there.
[1:19:36] [snorts]
[1:19:37] A table is a name and a form and a
[1:19:39] function imposed on the wood. name and
[1:19:42] form and function have no no connection
[1:19:44] with the wood at all.
[1:19:46] Their appearances that is called maya.
[1:19:52] So you that pure consciousness the
[1:19:55] fourth is the silence of the universe.
[1:19:58] The t the wood if you intensely focus on
[1:20:00] the wood it's the silence of the table.
[1:20:02] It's the disappearance of the table.
[1:20:05] There is no second reality. We use two
[1:20:07] words table. There is something
[1:20:10] corresponding to the word wood.
[1:20:14] There is no separate thing corresponding
[1:20:16] to the separate word table.
[1:20:19] If you want to point out the table,
[1:20:20] you'll have to use the wood.
[1:20:23] It's an appearance of the wood
[1:20:26] more. So this universe is an appearance
[1:20:28] of the underlying one consciousness.
[1:20:33] You the consciousness, you are the
[1:20:36] silence of the universe. Even while the
[1:20:39] universe is appearing, this is so
[1:20:40] profound that I can cannot overemphasize
[1:20:43] it. How do you find peace in this world?
[1:20:46] Look at the different approaches in the
[1:20:48] four yogas. How do you find peace?
[1:20:51] Karma yoga says you find peace through
[1:20:53] selflessness.
[1:20:55] It is our innate deep insight, very deep
[1:20:58] inside. It's our innate selfishness. I,
[1:21:00] me, mine, that's the source of my
[1:21:02] unhappiness.
[1:21:04] That is the source of my trouble. Let go
[1:21:06] of selfishness. To the extent that we
[1:21:08] let go of selfishness, we let go of our
[1:21:09] problems.
[1:21:11] That's the insight of karma yoga. What
[1:21:14] is the insight of bi yoga? How do you
[1:21:16] find peace in this world? By surrender.
[1:21:18] By taking refuge in a higher power in
[1:21:21] God. But that depends on belief. Okay.
[1:21:25] Faith. That there is some God and I take
[1:21:28] refuge in in my in the Lord and it
[1:21:30] works. That's the great insight of bi
[1:21:33] yoga. What is the insight of raja yoga?
[1:21:35] How do you find peace in this world?
[1:21:38] Through the silence of the mind.
[1:21:41] Silence of the mind. You'd find utter
[1:21:43] and deep peace.
[1:21:45] Very logical. All our troubles, you'll
[1:21:48] find the mind at the root of it. If
[1:21:51] there is problem, surely the mind is
[1:21:53] vibrating.
[1:21:54] If you silence the mind, we think
[1:21:56] because of the problems, my mind is
[1:21:58] disturbed. The insight is because my
[1:22:00] mind is disturbed. You have a problem.
[1:22:03] So if you silence the mind there'll be
[1:22:05] no problem at all in the mind
[1:22:09] meditation
[1:22:11] but that's not always possible for every
[1:22:12] first of all that kind of silence of the
[1:22:14] mind is not easy for most people it's
[1:22:16] extremely difficult second no matter how
[1:22:18] good a meditator you are you have to
[1:22:20] come back to the world when the mind
[1:22:22] will again be active as the Buddhist
[1:22:26] master said after the ecstasy the
[1:22:29] boundary.
[1:22:32] So after the silence of the mind then
[1:22:34] next will come the world back again your
[1:22:36] family profession body health all of
[1:22:39] that will come back again society how
[1:22:42] can you have the silence of the mind in
[1:22:44] the midst of samsara this is how you
[1:22:48] come to ghana yoga the way of knowledge
[1:22:49] non-duality
[1:22:51] your very nature is the silence of the
[1:22:53] universe
[1:22:55] just as the wood is the silence of the
[1:22:57] table even when it's appearing as a
[1:22:59] table you can call it a table you can
[1:23:00] use it as a table it's just wood.
[1:23:05] Even when you're calling it a necklace,
[1:23:07] it looks like a necklace and you wear it
[1:23:09] in around your neck, it's just gold.
[1:23:13] Similarly, even when you are a waker and
[1:23:15] you have a waking world and a job and
[1:23:17] responsibility, it is just one
[1:23:19] consciousness which you are.
[1:23:22] You are the silence of the universe.
[1:23:25] Chop sham on this one word Gapada writes
[1:23:28] one whole chapter the second chapter of
[1:23:30] the god karika all of them are expansion
[1:23:33] of this one word the silence of the
[1:23:35] universe
[1:23:38] shantam next word shantam means the end
[1:23:42] of all sorrow the end of all trouble
[1:23:46] what is the end of all trouble you say I
[1:23:49] am the source of all trouble no you are
[1:23:52] you misunderstanding yourself. You are
[1:23:54] the source of all trouble. That's
[1:23:55] wisdom. You truly understanding
[1:23:58] appreciating what you are. The fourth,
[1:24:00] you are the end of all trouble. As long
[1:24:02] as you think you are one of the three
[1:24:04] waker plenty of trouble. Dreamer in
[1:24:08] dreams also there is trouble. There are
[1:24:09] nightmares and problems are there.
[1:24:11] Anxieties all our subconscious comes up
[1:24:13] in the dream. Deep sleeper. Yes, no
[1:24:15] trouble at all. No, there is the seed of
[1:24:18] trouble because you're going to wake up.
[1:24:22] Suppose I fall asleep and I die. That's
[1:24:24] the end of it. No, you'll be reborn.
[1:24:27] [laughter]
[1:24:30] As long as you think I am the waker or
[1:24:32] the dreamer or the deep sleeper, there
[1:24:34] is trouble or in deep sleep potential
[1:24:36] trouble. Potential mischief. There is
[1:24:39] mischief or potential mischief. But when
[1:24:41] you know that you are the fourth even
[1:24:44] while appearing as the waker, the
[1:24:46] dreamer or the deep sleeper, you're
[1:24:48] fine.
[1:24:50] In the midst of appearance, even when
[1:24:52] the movie is playing, be it a horror
[1:24:54] movie or a comedy movie or a tragedy,
[1:24:57] the screen is fine.
[1:25:00] The screen enables the movie to be
[1:25:02] played and yet the screen is fine. You
[1:25:05] enable life to exist and yet you're fine
[1:25:07] and untouched.
[1:25:10] Shantam. What a beautiful word. Shantam.
[1:25:12] Peace itself.
[1:25:14] It says you are not peaceful. The mind
[1:25:16] can sometimes be peaceful. The world can
[1:25:19] sometimes be peaceful. People can
[1:25:21] sometimes be peaceful. Sometimes that
[1:25:23] which is peaceful can also lose its
[1:25:25] peace. But you are peace itself. The
[1:25:28] peace that passeth understanding.
[1:25:31] Shantam. That's your name. That's what
[1:25:34] you are.
[1:25:37] Sham auspiciousness. Bliss, fulfillment.
[1:25:46] They think it is the fourth. Who think?
[1:25:50] Those who do not know. Those who know,
[1:25:52] they know it is the one. Which one? I
[1:25:58] says atma that's the self. You are that.
[1:26:03] But it says it has to be known. It has
[1:26:07] to be realized. It won't work otherwise.
[1:26:10] A patch of cloud here is enough to
[1:26:12] obscure the vast sun which is so much
[1:26:14] bigger than not only the patch of cloud,
[1:26:16] it's bigger than the entire universe. I
[1:26:18] mean entire world. It's bigger than the
[1:26:20] earth. Much bigger than the earth. The
[1:26:22] whole sun can be obscured by one patch
[1:26:24] of cloud.
[1:26:26] You need a gust of wind to blow away the
[1:26:28] patch of cloud. The gust of wind will
[1:26:30] not reveal the sun. The sun is blazing
[1:26:32] forth all the time. Similarly, the one
[1:26:34] is blazing forth all the time. Ignorance
[1:26:37] is removed by knowledge and that
[1:26:39] knowledge is provided by the manduk
[1:26:42] theatma
[1:26:48] shanty shanty
[1:26:51] shant
[1:27:04] good just in Okay.
[1:27:07] Uh in the second session we'll do a
[1:27:09] meditation and some questions.
[1:27:14] [music]
[1:27:17] >> [bell]
