Music Meditation in the Woods: Bass Improvisation Outdoors

Garth Stevenson

Some music is made to fill a room. Some is made to empty one. A bassist walks out past the back door of his studio with a pedalboard, a bass, and a pair of battery-powered speakers, finds a patch of woods, and plays. That is the whole premise of Garth Stevenson's "Music Meditation," a single improvised session filmed on March 24, 2020, and posted to his channel on April 5 of that year. Nothing about it is elaborate. The instrument, the effects, the trees, and the sound going out into the air are the entire production, and that stripped-down setup is the point. It is a short, unpolished document of one musician returning to what grounds him, released in the first weeks of a period when many people were looking for something steady to hold.

What is Garth Stevenson's music meditation video about?

The video is an improvisation, not a composed piece presented for an audience. In the description he wrote for it, Stevenson explained the decision plainly: "Last week I decided to get back to the basics and took my bass, pedalboard, and battery powered speakers into the woods behind my studio." The phrase "back to basics" carries weight here. A bassist with a pedalboard has access to a wide palette of processed tones, and bringing that rig outdoors, away from the studio's controlled acoustics, reduces the question to something more elemental: what does this sound like when it meets open air, uneven ground, and the ambient noise of a forest?

He also framed the session as a practice with a clear reason behind it. "Improvising in nature is grounding for me, and always has been," he wrote. The word "always" suggests this is not a reaction to the spring of 2020 but a habit that predates it. The pandemic context appears in his closing lines, where he said he hoped the video could offer viewers "a similar feeling in these challenging and uncertain times," and sent love to "all that are suffering and to those fighting on the front lines." Those lines frame the video as an offering, one musician's attempt to share a state of steadiness with people who might be struggling.

Why does improvising outdoors feel grounding?

It is worth being precise about what the source material does and does not establish. Stevenson describes the effect as personal, something that has been true for him for a long time. He does not, in the description, lay out a theory of why outdoor improvisation calms the mind, and this article will not invent one on his behalf. What can be said with confidence is the structure of the practice he describes: a deliberate removal of the usual studio conditions, a return to a single instrument and a simple chain of sound, and an open-ended listening process in which the environment is a participant rather than a backdrop.

That structure is familiar to anyone who has practiced meditation. The usual move is to attend to one thing, notice when attention wanders, and return. An improvising musician does something similar with sound. The next note has to come from listening to what has just happened, including the wind, a bird, or the decay of a previous phrase. Outdoors, the listening widens. The forest supplies material that no producer could specify, and the musician's job becomes responding rather than controlling. For a bassist, whose instrument typically lives in the rhythmic foundation and rarely takes center stage in a solo sense, that shift from supporting role to open listening can be its own kind of reorientation.

What does the battery-powered rig add to the practice?

The specific gear matters because it defines the limits of the session. A pedalboard lets a player shape the instrument's voice in real time, with effects that can make a bass sound vast, distorted, or ghostly. Battery-powered speakers remove the need for a wall outlet, so the performance can happen wherever the musician walks. That combination is what makes the session possible: a fully amplified, shaped sound, generated in a place with no infrastructure at all.

There is a quiet paradox in this. A rig built for control becomes, in the woods, an instrument of attention. The effects still change the sound, but the sound must now compete with and blend into the natural world. Stevenson's choice to bring the full electric setup rather than an acoustic instrument keeps the session honest to his working vocabulary. He is not retreating to a more "authentic" sound. He is taking his own sound somewhere it has not been before and listening to what happens.

Why did this video resonate in spring 2020?

The video was published in early April 2020, when many musicians had lost their live work and many people had lost their routines. Stevenson's description does not dwell on the wider situation beyond a few sentences, and the restraint is part of its character. He offers the session as a gesture rather than a statement. For viewers who were isolated, anxious, or watching the news with a knot in the stomach, a bassist playing quietly in a forest with birds and wind in the mix offers a different kind of attention to spend time with. The video's modest view count, roughly fifteen thousand at the time this article was written, suggests it found a small audience that stayed with it, which is a reasonable outcome for a piece built on quiet rather than spectacle.

Where to go from here

If the video has you curious about this kind of practice, the most useful next step is to try it on a small scale. You do not need a pedalboard or a bass. Pick an instrument or even your voice, go somewhere with some natural sound, and play without a plan for a set period. Stop when you feel scattered and notice what your ears pick up. Stevenson's own description gives a simple reason to do it: the practice has been grounding for him for a long time, and he shared it at a moment when many people needed something grounding. Watch the session with that in mind, and let the trees and the bass do the work.

It is an improvised bass session recorded on March 24, 2020, in the woods behind his studio. He used his bass, a pedalboard, and battery-powered speakers, and posted the video to his channel on April 5, 2020.
In his video description, he said that improvising in nature is grounding for him and has always been. He hoped the session would offer viewers a similar feeling during uncertain times.
Stevenson presents it that way, describing outdoor improvisation as grounding. The practice asks the player to listen closely to the environment and respond in the moment, which mirrors the attention-and-return pattern of meditation.
He used his bass, a pedalboard, and battery-powered speakers. The battery power meant the performance could take place in the woods without any electrical connection.
Choose any instrument or your voice, go somewhere with natural sound, and play without a set plan for a fixed period. Stop when you feel scattered and notice what you hear, returning your attention to the sound whenever it wanders.
The video was published on April 5, 2020, and the session it documents was filmed on March 24, 2020. The description says the session took place the week before it was posted.
