Ram Dass and Nirinjan Kaur Sing Namo Namo at Sat Nam Fest

On September 18, 2011, at Sat Nam Fest in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, Ram Dass and Nirinjan Kaur led a kirtan of "Namo Namo (Sat Nam)," with Hargobind Singh and Narayan Singh accompanying them. The performance was captured and uploaded to YouTube under the Spirit Voyage channel in March 2012, runs just under eight minutes, and has since drawn about 2.4 million views. That is the whole of the documented record: a date, a place, a lineup, a song, and a number that keeps climbing. What follows is an attempt to explain why a clip this brief still tends to hold people, and what a listener can learn from it about the form it belongs to.

What is kirtan, and why does it sound the way it does?

Kirtan is devotional singing in community. In its most common shape, a leader sings a line and the room sings it back, so the music is less a performance delivered to an audience than a exchange that everyone takes part in. The phrases are usually short and repeated, which is part of the point. A line you have heard five times is one you can stop managing and simply inhabit. The repetition loosens the mind's grip on the words, and the melody starts doing the work.

That is the frame for this recording. The video's description calls it "a moving kirtan experience of Namo Namo," and the word "experience" is doing real work. A kirtan recording is never fully captured by audio or video. The part that matters most is the response coming back from the room, and a seven-minute clip can only hint at it.

What is being sung in Namo Namo (Sat Nam)?

The title gives two anchors. "Namo Namo" is a devotional refrain, and "Sat Nam" is the mantra that most listeners associate with Sikh and Kundalini-yoga practice. Sat Nam is commonly rendered as "truth is my identity." Placing the two together in a kirtan does something specific: the first phrase bows toward the divine, and the second names the singer's own relationship to what is true. In a call-and-response setting, that means every voice in the room is both asking and answering.

The description does not give the song's full text, its origin, or the arrangement the performers used. Anyone wanting that detail should listen to the recording closely, or look to the Sat Nam Fest organizers, who maintain the event's site at satnamfest.com.

Who is leading and who is holding the music?

Ram Dass is widely known as a spiritual teacher and author, and his presence on a kirtan stage carries that history. Nirinjan Kaur is a kirtan singer, and the description names her as co-leader, so the pairing is between two voices who lead rather than one headliner and a backing act. Hargobind Singh and Narayan Singh are named as the accompanying musicians. The description does not specify their instruments, and this article will not guess at them. What matters to a listener is the job those players do: in kirtan, the accompaniment holds the pulse steady enough that the leaders can let a phrase stretch, and the room can enter without losing its place.

Why does a seven-minute clip keep finding new listeners?

Part of the answer is length. Seven minutes is short enough to play twice in a row, and kirtan rewards repetition in a way few other forms do. The other part is the setting. A festival recording, made by people who came to sing rather than to be filmed, tends to carry a looseness that studio work often cannot. The clip does not try to explain itself. It lets the chant run, and it trusts the viewer to join or to simply sit with it.

The 2.4 million views are a number worth sitting with, but they do not prove much on their own. They do suggest that the recording has reached people well beyond those who were in Waynesboro that September, and that the form is still traveling.

How can a listener take this into their own practice?

The most useful thing this video offers is a template. Pick a short refrain. Sing it back to whoever is leading, even if you are alone in a kitchen with a recording. Let the repetition do its slow work for a few minutes before judging whether it has done anything. If you want to go further, look for live kirtan near you, since the room's response is the thing a recording cannot give you. Festivals such as Sat Nam Fest exist to create exactly that room.

Where to go from here

Watch the clip once to hear the leaders and the accompaniment, and a second time to listen for the moments when the room answers back. The official event information is at satnamfest.com. From there, search for other kirtan recordings from the same lineage of performers and compare how each arranges the same short refrain. The form rewards that kind of patient listening, and a seven-minute clip is a good place to begin.

Preguntas Frecuentes

Namo Namo (Sat Nam) is a devotional chant performed as kirtan, a form of call-and-response singing in community. The title pairs the refrain "Namo Namo" with the mantra "Sat Nam," commonly rendered as "truth is my identity."
The video's description credits Ram Dass and Nirinjan Kaur as leading the kirtan, accompanied by Hargobind Singh and Narayan Singh. The performance took place at Sat Nam Fest in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, on September 18, 2011.
Kirtan is devotional singing in which a leader sings a short phrase and the group sings it back, often repeating it many times. The repetition is meant to quiet the mind's grip on the words so the melody and the shared response can carry the experience.
The video's description points to satnamfest.com as the festival's website. The site is the place to look for event details and upcoming gatherings.
The upload on the Spirit Voyage channel has reached about 2.4 million views. Its short length, the festival setting, and the open, unhurried chanting likely contribute, though the description itself does not explain the reasons for its reach.
Choose a short refrain and sing it back along with a recording or a leader, repeating it for several minutes. Kirtan is most fully experienced in a room with other voices, so finding a live kirtan gathering is the natural next step.
