Morning Yoga Flow: Shake Off Yesterday Before You Move

Before the first pose, the instruction is to bounce. Feet set a little wider than hip distance, knees soft, you begin to hop and shake through the legs, and somewhere in the first minute Amy Fitta asks you to imagine bongos playing all around you. It is an unembarrassed way to open a practice she describes as suitable for all levels, and it carries the premise of the whole half-hour: you can shake loose what you carried in from yesterday before you ask your body to hold a shape. The rest of the flow, from shoulder rolls and a careful neck circle through forward folds, plank, cobra, a standing warrior sequence, and a twist, is built on that loosened start. Watched as a teaching rather than a checklist, the video makes a clear argument that a morning practice works best when it begins by releasing energy instead of demanding it.

Why begin a morning yoga practice by shaking?

Most morning routines start with breath and then move toward effort. Fitta reverses that order. She introduces the opening as the Osho Kundalini meditation, noting in the video that the full version usually runs an hour and that she is doing only a snippet of it. Her reason for keeping it at the front of the morning is direct: it is, in her words, "great first thing in the morning" to wake the whole system, get over yourself, and feel good.

The physical instruction is simple. Keep the knees soft and bounce. If you try to push into the feet, she says, you will start to laugh and your body will relax. The more you relax, the more the shaking can travel, and she encourages you to let it move from up-and-down into side-to-side. She is candid that it looks odd. "I know we look silly, don't I look silly," she says, half-laughing, which is part of the point. A practice that asks you to look a little foolish early in the day asks less of your ego for the rest of it.

The shake also carries an emotional instruction. Fitta asks you to release anything you are carrying from last night, yesterday, last week, last month, last year, and she borrows a lyric to make the point: "just like Taylor Swift said, shake it off, shake it off." The image she closes the segment with is the real thesis of the opening: "wake up with a dance in your heart rather than a heaviness in your soul." The practice is not describing a metaphor so much as giving you a physical route to it. You move the stored weight out of the body first, and then the poses have room to do their work.

How does the flow settle from shaking into breath?

The transition from shaking to stillness is where the practice shows its craft. Fitta moves you through a sequence of slowing: "keep going, keep going, and then stop, stop, stop, slow it down." Then she asks you to ground through the feet and legs and to feel the heaviness moving down and the lightness moving up. The hands come to the chest, and you are asked to feel the heartbeat under your palms.

This is a small but important shift. The shaking was outward and loud. The hands on the heart are quiet and inward. Fitta frames the pause with a question she asks you to hold: "how lucky we are, how blessed," and then, "what if we woke up thinking anything more possible than we write the scripts." It is a line that does gratitude work rather than decorating the practice. The breath she asks for next is the same breath, the same moment, the same body she has just been shaking.

From there the sequence turns to the upper body, and the instructions get precise. Shoulders go up toward the ears, back toward the wall behind you, and down the back, in a loose, unhurried roll. Then the head drops gently: right ear toward the right shoulder, chin toward the chest, left ear toward the left. If it feels right, you take a full circle, but she is firm about caution. "Don't tip the head all the way back," she warns, and if you do tip it back, let the head hang forward for a moment. Neck work like this is where a beginner most often overreaches, and Fitta's insistence on gentleness is the kind of detail that makes a short practice safe to repeat every day.

What happens in the forward folds, the plank, and the cobra?

The next stretch is a chest opener and a fold. Hands interlace behind the back, knuckles press toward the floor, and the shoulders roll back to lift the chest. Fitta asks you to lengthen the tailbone down and press into the feet so the lower body supports the upper. Her cue for the stretch is an exhale on which the shoulders soften even as they roll back. Keep the body straight, she says, and do not lean into the stretch or away from it.

The forward fold is taught in stages, and this is where the flow's structure becomes visible. You inhale, lift, bend the knees, and bring the belly over the thighs. Then you squeeze the shoulder blades together and lift the hips, repeating "lift, lift, lift, lift," before releasing the knees toward the fingertips. The halfway lift is the move that teaches a flat back. Hands come to the shins, thighs, or the floor, and you lift to a long, flat spine rather than rounding into the lower back. She repeats it several times for a reason: a flat back on the lift is the base for every forward bend that follows.

The plank and the lowering that comes after it give the video its most useful teaching on options. Fitta describes three ways down. You can roll slowly with the elbows tucked toward the ribs. You can lower to knees, chest, and chin. Or you can move through a chaturanga into cobra, inhaling as you lift the chest and exhaling back into downward dog. The sequence does not ask everyone to do the most demanding version. It names the choices and leaves the decision to the body, which is the same spirit as the "all levels" promise in the description.

How do the standing sequences build strength and balance?

The standing work begins with a step forward and a fold, and then a lunge. Fitta asks you to step back, land the knee, and if the hips allow, bring the back knee directly under the hip. Arms reach up, the shoulders stay soft, and the hips sink without the shoulders climbing. The cue she returns to is that you can lift and lengthen through the sides of the waist while keeping the shoulders out of the ears. It is a deceptively complicated instruction, and the video's repetition of it over several breaths is the signal that the work is in the details, not the depth.

The warrior two sequence is held longer. The front knee bends over the ankle, the arms extend to the sides, and the gaze moves across the front hand. Fitta asks for the hands to come in line with the shoulders and the head to sit in line with the torso, with a little smile on the face. That smile is not an afterthought. Across the standing poses she keeps returning to the face and the heart as the places where effort either tightens or softens.

Balance and twisting come later. A twist is taken with a strap if you need one, the body turns and the arm crosses over, and the video asks you to breathe into the rotation rather than force it. Fitta's closing work moves from the physical into a visualization of gratitude: she asks you to increase the smile, let it swell through the body, and carry it into the day. Her final lines are the most explicit statement of the practice's purpose: "smile at a stranger," then watch abundance flow into your life.

Who is this morning practice for, and what should you know before pressing play?

The video's own description promises a 20-minute practice suitable for all levels, one that will leave you invigorated, empowered, and ready to start your day. The listed runtime is closer to 29 minutes, and the instruction covers more ground than a quick warm-up, so it is worth planning for the full length the first time. The modifications Fitta offers, from lowering options to the strap in the twist to the choice of how far to lift the back knee, make it accessible to newer students, but the shaking opening and the careful neck work reward attention whether you are new to yoga or returning to it.

Read as a whole, the video is persuasive for one reason: it treats the morning body as a body that needs to be woken rather than tested. The shake gets the blood moving, the breath settles the nervous system, the folds and planks build the structure, and the gratitude closes the loop. If you have ever started a day feeling heavy, this is a half-hour argument that the first thing to do may not be to push, but to bounce, laugh, and let it go.

Where to go from here

To practice the sequence, begin with the shaking opening and do not skip it. Then work through the neck circles, the interlaced chest opener, and the halfway-lift forward fold before moving into plank and cobra. Keep the lowering options in mind, and choose the version that matches your shoulders and wrists on any given morning. When you are ready for more time on the mat, the video's own stated runtime suggests a longer session than the description's twenty minutes, so plan a window that allows the full flow. Pair it with a few minutes of stillness afterward, hands on the heart, and the gratitude from the closing section will do more of its work.

[13:52] the mat as possible relax the shoulders

[13:56] that front leg is lunging the back heel

[13:58] is rooting down finding lengthen space

[14:01] for the lower back and space for the

[14:03] abdomen one more breath here exhale

[14:06] hands down downward facing dog the right

[14:08] leg steps back we're gonna go into the

[14:10] other side

[14:11] left leg reaches up step let's look

[14:14] through between the hands spin the back

[14:16] heel down 45 degrees reach the arms up

[14:19] and relax the shoulders

[14:21] plunge into that front leg and make sure

[14:24] you're not curling into that big toe

[14:26] side push the pinky edge that back edge

[14:28] of the foot down as well

[14:30] you're the front inner arch lift up that

[14:32] back foot last breath hands come down

[14:36] downward facing dog

[14:38] left foot joins the right look to your

[14:41] hands wrist of the right foot forward

[14:43] back into lunge that left knee is lifted

[14:45] come onto your fingertips and pull the

[14:48] chest forward let your left hip sink

[14:50] down push up through the left heel and

[14:54] then step your left foot all the way for

[14:56] it back into your Falls bring your feet

[14:59] together stop coming back into your

[15:02] chair pose sink the bottom down reach

[15:04] the arms forward and up take one more

[15:06] deep breath in and deep breath out

[15:09] inhale stand up reach to the sky I'm a

[15:13] bit limited next help bring your hands

[15:17] to your heart

[15:18] take a moment release the arms feel your

[15:22] breath feel the grounding you know all

[15:25] that positive energy rushing through

[15:27] your

[15:28] what a great way to start our day now

[15:32] let's take a big step wide sense so

[15:35] turning towards a lone edge of your mat

[15:37] bring your hands to your hips turn your

[15:39] toes in and your heels up we're gonna

[15:41] take a deep breath lift and exhale

[15:43] activate your feet as you tip forward

[15:46] good keep your hands to your hips this

[15:48] time pull your hips slightly back the

[15:50] head down and then inhale we're gonna

[15:52] come all the way up exhale release your

[15:56] shoulders turn towards your left foot

[15:58] left foot turns towards the top of the

[16:01] mat short edge of the mat right heel

[16:03] kicks out come into your warrior two

[16:05] bend your front leg knee over the ankle

[16:07] relax the shoulders reach out through

[16:10] the height keep heart really open

[16:12] reverse it so inhale that left arm

[16:15] reaches up to go all over that right leg

[16:17] and exhale back into your warrior two

[16:20] maybe a little deeper again inhale try

[16:23] not to collapse that back foot exhaling

[16:26] back into your warrior two one more time

[16:29] up inhale reverse it

[16:30] and then come into side angle so bring

[16:32] your left forearm to the left thigh

[16:34] right arm reaches straight up or over

[16:38] the ear with the palm of your hand

[16:40] facing the floor the chest the belly are

[16:42] spinning upwards to the sky

[16:44] push down I'm sure your legs really

[16:46] engage that you can go deeper

[16:48] maybe that hand goes to the floor as

[16:50] well take one more breath open and then

[16:55] inhale all the way back up warrior two

[16:57] really strong and then inhale come back

[17:00] up hands to your hips turn towards the

[17:03] center of your mat toes and heels up

[17:05] lift the chest exhaling into your folds

[17:09] this time take your hands to the floor

[17:11] try to bring the hands in line with your

[17:13] shoulders bring them onto bricks or

[17:15] blocks if you need to if you can't reach

[17:17] the floor press your hands down and

[17:19] slightly forward so the crown of your

[17:21] head starts to come down bring the

[17:24] weight forward so that the hips aligned

[17:26] over your heels last breath and then

[17:31] bring your hands to your hips and lift

[17:33] up so that your head is in line with

[17:35] your bust the back is straight and then

[17:37] come

[17:37] with that straight back all the way up

[17:40] big exhale turn towards your right foot

[17:43] right foot turns to the short edge of

[17:45] the nut we find our lunge make sure the

[17:47] back heel is kicked out a little bit

[17:49] reach the arms open warrior two maybe a

[17:53] little smile on your face keep the heart

[17:56] open feel the strength feel that courage

[17:59] coming through the hips opening this is

[18:02] called the warrior post and we don't go

[18:04] through our days becoming worried us we

[18:06] become warriors instead on your next

[18:08] inhale reach that right arm up to go

[18:10] over and then exhale back into warrior

[18:13] two again inhaling reach up to go over

[18:18] exhale back into warrior two now this

[18:21] time bit different inhale reach up find

[18:23] length through that right side and then

[18:25] take the forearm down for side angle

[18:27] pose when you want to be in the middle

[18:29] of the floor I'm not the elbow lift that

[18:31] left arm up back the hand over the

[18:34] shoulder a little bit deeper into your

[18:36] hips options you can keep the hand there

[18:39] or reach it over your ear try not to

[18:41] bring the arm down in front of the face

[18:43] it goes right over the ear stay there or

[18:46] bring the hand down to the floor keep

[18:48] pressing into your back foot spin your

[18:51] chest open try not to let it collect so

[18:53] a point towards the ground last breath

[18:56] and then come all the way back up to

[18:59] your warrior two be strong and then come

[19:02] back stand straight straighten your leg

[19:05] hands to your hips turn your feet in

[19:07] toes and heels up this time option

[19:10] shreak interlace your hands behind your

[19:13] back

[19:13] press your knuckles down roll those

[19:15] shoulders back and open inhale and

[19:18] exhale tip yourself forward drop your

[19:22] head knuckles reach up to the sky

[19:23] remember to bring the weight forward

[19:25] into the Front's of your feet and really

[19:27] activate your feet squeeze the shoulder

[19:30] blades together let your head really use

[19:33] let the neck go

[19:38] then inhale and all the lips either

[19:40] belly straight back and exhale release

[19:46] you'll tell your feet together come down

[19:52] to your seat we're gonna come on to our

[19:54] bottoms we're going to bring the soles

[19:59] of our feet together first hook your

[20:01] hands around your feet or just hold onto

[20:03] your ankles and lift straight up press

[20:06] your head to the sky press your knees

[20:08] down be very mindful what you feel in

[20:11] your but never force approach open to

[20:14] proposals soften into it so perhaps

[20:17] you're just staying here perhaps we're

[20:19] just lifting and lengthening the spine

[20:21] slowing down our breaths coming into

[20:26] that um energy that kind of slow or more

[20:29] nurturing energy than the yang energy we

[20:31] were just in doing those warrior poses

[20:33] and Sun Salutations so we're gonna lift

[20:37] up and if it is possible you can start

[20:39] to lift the chest to bring it up and

[20:40] over your feet try not to round and

[20:43] collapse lift up to go over want to keep

[20:47] that chest open we want to start our day

[20:50] with an open heart rather than a

[20:52] depressed and collapsed heart relax the

[20:56] shoulders

[20:57] ease the body

[21:01] and then inhale we're going to come all

[21:04] the way up extending the left leg

[21:06] bringing the right foot to the inner

[21:08] thigh reaching the arms up to the sky

[21:11] and then exhale up and over now if you

[21:15] don't get very far and you can use a

[21:18] strap around your foot or as you come

[21:21] into it you're gonna bend your knee so

[21:23] when you reach up and over you're not

[21:25] going to round that lower back we're

[21:27] going to take the pelvis into a fold

[21:29] that's what the fold is it's more from

[21:31] the pelvis than it is from the back and

[21:34] you might just stay without that knee

[21:36] and you still can get sensation in the

[21:38] hamstring forward again it's not a race

[21:45] to get the forehead down we don't want

[21:46] to bring the forehead to the knee

[21:48] actually because then we're just

[21:48] rounding the back we want to reach the

[21:51] chest up last breath here shoulders pull

[21:55] back

[22:00] and then we're gonna come up reach the

[22:01] arms up to the sky and exhale the arms

[22:05] down bring your right knee up to the sky

[22:09] and bring the foot across the leg twist

[22:12] we're gonna hook the left elbow around

[22:15] the right knee bring your right hand

[22:17] behind you and then use your right hand

[22:20] to press into the ground to lengthen and

[22:23] then turn into your twist looking behind

[22:26] your right shoulder keep your left foot

[22:28] flexed two more breaths here every time

[22:31] you inhale get a little bit taller every

[22:33] time you exhale a little bit deeper

[22:36] inhaling me exhaling deeper

[22:46] standing that right leg forward get the

[22:49] legs a little shake bring the left leg

[22:51] in adjust your hips maybe bending that

[22:55] knee if you need to and using a strap or

[22:57] inhale take the arms up exhaling up and

[23:01] over now when you get there don't think

[23:04] that's the end game in help re lengthen

[23:07] find more space even more space and then

[23:10] exhale maybe a little bit into it and

[23:12] then inhale maybe lift up find a little

[23:15] bit more space and exhale so it's an

[23:17] evolution it's a progress it's not just

[23:20] from A to B and we're enjoying that

[23:23] journey enjoying the process of it

[23:27] I'm staying mindful we're in our body

[23:29] we're tightening where we're trying too

[23:32] much where we're forcing where we can

[23:35] invite a little bit more surrender

[23:43] and then we're gonna come back up reach

[23:45] the eyes to the side take your hands

[23:48] behind you take that knee up to the sky

[23:51] cross it over the body hook your right

[23:55] arm around your left knee left hand

[23:57] behind your fingertips to the floor use

[24:00] that to help extend the next Hale

[24:02] turning into to its right foot stays

[24:05] next in handy exhaling a little deeper

[24:18] and then releasing back to the center

[24:21] extending your legs one more time giving

[24:24] them a little shake and just come to sit

[24:27] for a moment

[24:28] sitting with whichever way is most

[24:32] comfortable for you closing your eyes

[24:36] take a deep sigh

[24:46] I just move into stillness for a moment

[24:50] letting go of all the effort

[25:00] feeling your breath as it rises it flows

[25:05] in and out of the body

[25:18] perhaps opening to potential of peace of

[25:24] joy unconditional of gratitude

[25:38] every time you breathe and grieve in

[25:40] those qualities of joy a piece of

[25:47] gratitude might a smile even begin to

[25:52] rise on your face as you breathe in joy

[25:57] peace and gratitude

[26:05] take the moment you think of one thing

[26:08] you're grateful for one thing that

[26:11] brings joy into your life but that

[26:19] increase that smile let it swell your

[26:21] heart

[26:29] begin your day with happiness

[26:35] and see the way your day unfolds notice

[26:43] what happens if you smile at a stranger

[26:50] if we begin our day with happiness and

[26:54] happiness starts to overflow from us

[26:58] life seems a little bit more easy begin

[27:07] your day with happens

[27:12] see the way your day unfolds smile at a

[27:20] stranger for no reason notice if you

[27:29] begin your day with happiness if you're

[27:32] less reactive more responsive

[27:40] and see our eyes are not just projectors

[27:53] begin your day with happiness notice if

[28:01] your day unfolds differently start your

[28:07] day as you mean to go on with joy peace

[28:16] gratitude

[28:21] and watch abundance flow into your life

[28:28] watch her life becomes a little easier

[28:38] and notice in those moments where our

[28:40] buttons are pushed our triggers hit take

[28:45] a deep breath

[28:49] try to breathe in and let it go connect

[28:55] to your happiness so peace

[29:03] thank you so much for practicing with us

[29:05] today I mean you have

In this video Amy Fitta introduces the opening as the Osho Kundalini meditation, noting that the full version usually runs an hour and that she uses only a snippet. The practice has you bounce with soft knees, then shake through the body, releasing tension before any poses.
The video's description calls it suitable for all levels, and the sequence offers options such as three ways to lower from plank, a strap in the twist, and adjustable lunges. Beginners should move gently through the neck circles and avoid tipping the head back.
The description advertises a 20-minute practice, but the video's listed duration is 29 minutes 15 seconds. Plan for the full length on your first run-through.
Fitta describes shaking as a way to wake the whole system and release what you carry from last night or earlier. She frames it as moving stored weight out of the body so the poses that follow have room to work.
Inhale to lift up, bend the knees, bring the belly over the thighs, and squeeze the shoulder blades together. Then lift the halfway position with hands on the shins, thighs, or floor, keeping a long, flat back before folding again.
Fitta offers rolling down with elbows tucked toward the ribs, lowering to knees, chest, and chin, or moving through chaturanga into cobra and then downward dog. Each option lets you choose the version that matches your shoulders and strength.
