Early Reception and Love Imprinting: Birth Samskaras

OM

De Sri Preethaji & Sri Krishnaji

The way a child is received at birth—whether held, welcomed, and physically affirmed—shapes deep psychological patterns called samskaras that persist into adulthood. When a newborn is not held or welcomed adequately, the resulting unfulfilled longing for love becomes encoded as a samskara (a conditioning pattern or groove in consciousness), creating a lifelong pattern of seeking love that may become destructive or compulsive. Understanding this mechanism reveals how earliest human contact carries profound implications for emotional health and relational patterns.

What Are Samskaras and How Do They Form at Birth?

In the Hindu and yogic tradition, the term samskara refers to deeply ingrained patterns, impressions, or conditionings that shape how consciousness operates and how we relate to experience. These patterns are not merely psychological—they are considered imprints that influence perception, behavior, and emotional reactivity across a lifetime. A samskara operates like a groove in consciousness; once established, it becomes the default pathway through which the mind and body respond to situations.

The critical insight discussed here is that samskaras do not begin in childhood proper—they begin at birth itself, in the first moments of life. The quality of reception a newborn receives during these initial hours creates the foundational samskara around love, belonging, and safety. This is not sentimental; it is a neurological and energetic reality. When a newborn is held, welcomed, and affirmed through physical contact and presence, a samskara of safety and belovedness is established. The nervous system receives a clear signal: You are wanted. You are safe. You belong.

How Lack of Physical Welcome Creates a Destructive Pattern?

Conversely, when a child is not held or adequately welcomed—whether due to medical necessity, cultural practice, maternal separation, trauma, or circumstance—a different samskara is imprinted. The unfulfilled longing for love, for touch, for welcome, becomes encoded not as a temporary need but as a deep groove in the psyche. This is critical: that longing does not disappear. It becomes destructive precisely because it remains active, searching, trying to fulfill itself through every subsequent relationship and experience.

A child with this samskara grows into an adult carrying an inarticulate sense of incompleteness. The body "remembers" the lack of early holding, even if the conscious mind does not. This person may unconsciously:

  • Seek excessive validation and reassurance from partners, creating dependency patterns
  • Struggle with intimacy because the original wound is preverbal—predating language and conscious awareness
  • Exhibit compulsive behaviors around seeking love, approval, or physical closeness
  • Feel a chronic sense of loneliness even when surrounded by loving people
  • Be unable to truly receive love because the original gap remains unfilled

The destructiveness arises because the adult attempts to fill an infant-level need through adult relationships, which are inherently limited in their capacity to provide what a newborn required. No romantic partner, no friend, no amount of external validation can heal the gap that should have been closed at birth.

The Neurological and Energetic Basis of Early Imprinting

Modern neuroscience confirms what the contemplative traditions have long understood: the first moments and months of life shape neural architecture. Physical holding activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the "rest and digest" system), while absence of touch and welcome keep the nervous system in a state of mild activation, scanning for threat or connection.

When a newborn is held and welcomed, the brain literally organizes around safety. The amygdala (fear center) becomes less reactive; the prefrontal cortex (rational, relational center) develops stronger connections. Oxytocin—the bonding hormone—is released, creating neurochemical imprints of trust and belonging.

When holding and welcome are absent, the reverse occurs. The developing brain organizes around incompleteness. The child's system learns: I am not inherently worthy of being held. I must earn love through behavior. I am fundamentally separate. These become not mere thoughts but somatic, energetic truths encoded in the body's baseline state.

How This Samskara Manifests in Adult Relationships

An adult carrying the samskara of insufficient early welcome often exhibits predictable relational patterns:

  • Anxious attachment: Hypervigilance to signs of rejection or withdrawal in partners; difficulty tolerating space or independence in relationships
  • Neediness that exhausts relationships: The unfulfilled infantile longing pours into adult partnerships, often pushing partners away because the need is bottomless
  • Inability to believe in being loved: Even when loved, the person cannot fully trust or internalize that love because it contradicts the deep samskara of unwantedness
  • Self-abandonment: Sacrificing one's own needs and boundaries to maintain connection, mirroring the original survival strategy of the unwelcome infant
  • Compulsive seeking: Chasing relationships, approval, or experiences in an attempt to "fill the hole"—but never truly satisfied because the original wound requires healing at its source

Can This Samskara Be Healed?

The teaching implies a crucial possibility: yes, but not through conventional means. An adult cannot be "mothered" by a partner and truly heal. The samskara must be addressed at the level at which it was created—the somatic, preverbal, embodied level.

Healing might involve:

  • Somatic therapies that work with the body's imprints (like Somatic Experiencing or trauma-informed bodywork)
  • Reparenting practices where one learns to internally provide the welcome and safety that was missing externally
  • Meditation and breathwork that access the nervous system directly, teaching it that safety is possible
  • Conscious relationship work that honors the samskara without attempting to heal it through the partner
  • Spiritual practice that decouples the sense of worth from external reception, gradually establishing an inner foundation of belovedness independent of circumstance

The Wider Implication: Reception and Consciousness

This teaching points to something profound about human consciousness itself: we do not begin as blank slates. We begin as exquisitely sensitive beings whose very first experience of consciousness is relational. The first samskara is not something we think or believe—it is something we are imprinted with through the quality of welcome we receive.

This has implications for how societies approach birth, motherhood, and early childhood. It suggests that the way we welcome new humans into the world is not merely a matter of sentiment or custom—it is a matter of creating either the conditions for consciousness to unfold in wholeness, or the conditions for lifelong patterns of seeking, striving, and incompleteness.

Where to go from here

If this resonates as your own pattern, begin by acknowledging the samskara without judgment. You did not create it; it was given to you through circumstance. From there, explore somatic and body-based practices that allow your nervous system to slowly learn new truths. Consider working with a somatic therapist or trauma-informed practitioner who understands that verbal insight alone cannot heal preverbal imprints. Finally, contemplate the distinction between the adult you are now and the infant you were—the adult has agency and choice in ways the infant did not. That distinction is where healing begins.

A samskara is a deep groove or conditioning pattern in consciousness. When a newborn is not held or welcomed, the unfulfilled longing for love becomes encoded as an active, searching pattern that persists into adulthood. It becomes destructive because the adult unconsciously tries to fill an infant-level need through adult relationships, relationships, creating compulsive seeking, dependency, or chronic dissatisfaction that external love cannot resolve.
No. While loving relationships are valuable, they cannot heal a preverbal, somatic imprint from birth because the original wound predates language and conscious relationship. The gap requires healing at the nervous system and body level, typically through somatic practices, internal reparenting, and trauma-informed work—not through romantic love alone.
Adults who lacked adequate holding at birth often develop anxious attachment: hypervigilance to rejection, difficulty tolerating space, neediness that exhausts relationships, and inability to truly believe they are loved. The nervous system learned early that it is not inherently worthy of connection, creating patterns that persist despite evidence of love from others.
Yes, but it requires work at the somatic and nervous system level rather than intellectual understanding alone. Healing approaches include somatic therapy, embodied meditation, reparenting practices, and spiritual training that gradually teach the nervous system that safety and belovedness are possible independent of external circumstances.
Birth imprinting happens before language develops and is encoded neurologically and somatically in the nervous system, amygdala, and stress-response mechanisms. The body's baseline state, not conscious memory, carries the imprint. This is why intellectual awareness of being unwanted at birth does not automatically heal the pattern—the nervous system must be directly rewired.
When welcomed and held, a child's brain and nervous system organize around inherent safety and belovedness. When unwelcome, the developing system learns that worth must be earned and that fundamental separateness is the baseline reality. These become embodied truths, shaping self-perception and relational behavior across the lifespan.
