In the spring of 2026, Desert Dwellers—the psychedelic world bass project now helmed by the duo of Treavor Moontribe and Sarkis Mikael—rolled out on their first-ever headlining tour. They called it the Tabula Rasa Tour, a Latin phrase meaning "blank slate," and the name carried real weight: this wasn't a retrospective victory lap but a documented reset. Over the course of months on the road, the duo refined a set that threaded together unreleased material, fresh arrangements, and Desert Dwellers classics into something that felt genuinely evolved. This performance, captured during the tour's run, is a window into how far the project had traveled—and where it was heading.

A Duo Inherits a Sound

Desert Dwellers carries a legacy in psychedelic electronic music that stretches back decades. When Treavor Moontribe and Sarkis Mikael stepped into the project, they weren't tasked with mere stewardship but with reinvention. The Tabula Rasa Tour marked the moment they proved they understood the weight of that responsibility. The set structure they developed over those months reveals the depth of their vision: it moves through moments of crystalline euphoria, introspective ambient passages, and moments of sonic intensity that feel earned rather than imposed.

The opening track, "Distracted By Shadows"—performed here with live singer Uyanga Bold and flute player Bansara—immediately signals the new direction. Rather than building the set on the pure instrumental groove that had long defined the project's DNA, this version brings the human voice into the foreground. Bansara's flute floats above the bass, creating a textural cushion that feels almost orchestral. This choice alone matters: it reframes what Desert Dwellers could be.

The Title Track as Philosophy

"Still Seeing Things," the title of their follow-up tour and the second track in this set, became the single that would define this era. The repetition of its core phrase—I'm still seeing things—creates a mantric quality that works both as hook and as meditation. In the context of a full set, it functions as a reset point, a moment where the crowd's individual experiences collapse into a shared state. The production here is clean and dynamic, allowing space for the bass to breathe while synthetic textures orbit the core groove. It's the sound of a band that understands how to build intimacy at scale.

Remixes as Dialogue

The mid-set remix of Balkan Bump's "Mamantra" demonstrates one of the duo's primary tools: how they can take existing material and push it into their own sonic territory. Rather than honor the original arrangement, they strip it, recolor it, and make it their own. This is essential in the world bass tradition—remix work serves as both artist statement and conversation with the wider community. The same applies to their interpretation of "As We Rise," credited to Ghostpipes but featuring that artist's voice mixed into the Desert Dwellers framework. These moments aren't filler between originals; they're integral to how the project communicates its values: that boundaries between "original" and "reinterpretation" are fluid, that community and collaboration matter more than ego.

Thematic Arc: From Pain to Transcendence

"Feeling the Pain," featuring Uyanga Bold and Bansara once again, marks a tonal shift deeper into the set. The lyrics address suffering directly—causing by the insane—and the production here is deliberately heavier, more minor-key than what came before. This is a calculated move. Desert Dwellers could have maintained the euphoric ascent, but instead they honor the shadow side of the experience. In electronic music that claims spiritual or transformative intent, this moment matters. It says: we're not here to bypass your reality; we're here to move through it.

From there, the set begins its long climb back toward transcendence. Ambient transitions between the major tracks—sequences of pure texture and sustained tone—allow the listener to integrate what they've heard. These aren't songs; they're breathing room. In a 102-minute set, these moments are as important as the dancefloor moments because they create rhythm on a macro level. You rise, you rest, you rise again.

The Philosophical Undertone

Later in the set, sampled dialogue emerges—questions about the nature of reality itself. What is real? How do you define real? The voice explains: If you're talking about what you can feel, what you can smell, you can taste and see, real is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain. This isn't randomly chosen material; it frames the entire set as an inquiry into perception. Desert Dwellers is not claiming to be the truth; it's asking you to examine what you consider true. The hypnagogic state—that liminal space between wakefulness and sleep where rational defenses lower—becomes a metaphor for what the duo believes electronic music can access. That loosening of the boundary between self and other, between thought and sensation.

The Visual Partnership

Johnathan Singer's visuals, credited throughout, create a parallel narrative that deserves mention. With art contributions from two dozen visual artists—including Martina Hoffmann, Blake Foster, and many others—the production becomes a full-spectrum experience. In a world where visuals and sound are often treated as separate concerns, the care taken here suggests that Desert Dwellers understands the set as a total artwork. The colors, fractals, and evolving imagery aren't decoration; they're language.

What the Tabula Rasa Tour Reveals

By the set's final moments—returning again to "Heat," the mantra-like production that anchors much of the performance—something has shifted in the room. The audience has traveled from individual reverie through collective pain to something that feels close to transcendence. This is the oldest promise of electronic music: that through sound and community, we might access states otherwise closed to us. What Treavor Moontribe and Sarkis Mikael prove across this tour capture is that the promise still holds, if you build it carefully and with respect for the listening body.

The Tabula Rasa Tour wasn't just a way to debut new material; it was a statement about what Desert Dwellers had become. Not a brand to be preserved in amber, but a living inquiry into sound, consciousness, and the spaces where music becomes ceremony.

Where to go from here

If this set sparked your interest in the reinvented Desert Dwellers project, their subsequent "Still Seeing Things" tour builds directly on these foundations with even more refined material and the expanded live ensemble. Their studio albums from this era—expected to arrive in late 2026—will give full context to the unreleased tracks hinted at in this performance. For those curious about world bass and psychedelic electronic music more broadly, artists like Shpongle, Tipper, and Bluetech offer complementary approaches to the intersection of dance music and contemplative sound design.

The Tabula Rasa Tour was Desert Dwellers' first-ever headlining tour in spring 2026, featuring the new duo of Treavor Moontribe and Sarkis Mikael. The name, Latin for "blank slate," reflected the project's reinvention—not a retrospective but a documented reset that combined unreleased material with classic tracks in an evolved arrangement.
Desert Dwellers is now a duo comprised of Treavor Moontribe and Sarkis Mikael. The Tabula Rasa Tour featured collaborations with live singer Uyanga Bold, backing vocalist Ghostpipes, and flute player Bansara, expanding the sonic palette beyond the core duo.
By bringing in live singers and acoustic flute, Desert Dwellers moved away from pure instrumental grooves into a more orchestral, voice-forward approach. Tracks like "Distracted By Shadows" and "Feeling the Pain" use Uyanga Bold's vocals and Bansara's flute to create textural depth and human connection that reshapes the project's identity.
Sampled dialogue about the nature of reality—questioning what is "real" and exploring how the brain interprets electrical signals as perception—frames the entire set as an inquiry into consciousness. This references the hypnagogic state between wakefulness and sleep, suggesting that electronic music can access altered states of awareness.
It's both. The set balances dancefloor-oriented tracks with meditative ambient passages, creating rhythm on a macro level. Desert Dwellers treats electronic music as a total experience—moving listeners through euphoria, introspection, and shadow work toward transcendence rather than escape.
World bass blends electronic production with global musical traditions, creating psychedelic grooves that draw from many cultures. Desert Dwellers exemplifies this through their use of flute, vocal traditions, and a commitment to both dancefloor energy and contemplative depth.
Visuals were designed by Johnathan Singer, with art contributions from over twenty collaborators including Martina Hoffmann, Blake Foster, and others. The visual design operates as a parallel language to the music, creating a full-spectrum experience rather than decoration.
