Choosing a Career and Destiny: Three Tests for Young Seekers

De Sri Preethaji & Sri Krishnaji

Ver · 7

A student stands up in a hall at an abundance festival and admits something that the room, probably, recognizes. Years ago, they were afraid to speak in front of a group. Now they are at a microphone, close to finishing a bachelor's degree in computer science, asking a teacher how a young person is supposed to choose a career at all. The question is ordinary and urgent, and the answer Sri Krishnaji gives in this short Q&A is more interesting than the usual advice about salaries and job markets. He argues that the standard method of choosing a field, which starts with demand and pay, leaves out the two things that actually make work sustaining: honest knowledge of your own strengths and a sense of why you are here at all. The second question in the video, from a real estate entrepreneur in Mumbai, turns to the older and harder problem of destiny. If something is written for you, why does effort sometimes fail? Krishnaji's reply reframes destiny not as a fixed line but as something that moves with your inner state, and he ties that movement to clarity of mind.

How Do You Choose a Career Without Just Chasing the Money?

Krishnaji begins by describing how most people decide, and he does not dress it up. The usual method, he says, comes down to "understanding where the world is going, what are the changes, which field has the maximum demand and which field pays me the most." He is blunt that this is "really not connection or passion." It is a rational reading of the market, and he does not dismiss it. He treats it as the first of three elements, not the whole decision.

The first element is market awareness, and he is specific about how to build it. You get that understanding, he says, "by meeting a lot of people, by going to lot of forums where you can understand, reading a lot." In the Q&A he names where he thinks the world is heading: artificial intelligence, robotics, and cyber security, which he calls fields that are "going to be big booms." Whatever one thinks of those forecasts, the principle is sound. A young person should know which parts of the economy are moving, and should keep up, because, as he tells the room, "it is changing at a rapid pace."

The second element is the one most career advice skips: what you are actually inclined to do. Krishnaji lays out three broad types. Some people, he says, "can be great managers, that is you could be people who can manage things very well." Some are natural marketers, who "can market or sell" almost anything. Some are technologists, the kind who would rather be "behind the computers and coding" than talk to anyone. He also names a rarer temperament, the entrepreneur, who will "risk it all" and accept the possibility of losing everything in order to explore. The point is not to sort yourself neatly into one box. It is to be, in his words, "very very honest to yourself and understand which direction you are leaning into."

This is where the Q&A gets practical. For a student who already has a degree track, the implication is that market knowledge and self-knowledge have to be held together. A high-demand field that suits your temperament is a different proposition from a high-demand field you merely tolerate. Krishnaji's test is simple: find where you are strong, and choose that.

"So whatever field you are choosing ultimately you must see where you are strong in. Choose that."

— Sri Krishnaji, Q&A video, 4:24 (paraphrased from the transcript's spoken sequence)

What Does Awakening to Your Dharma Mean in a Career Decision?

The third element is the one Krishnaji calls most important, and it is the one that moves the question from vocation to meaning. "You must awaken to your dharma. You must awaken to your purpose. You must have the answer to the question, why am I here on this planet?" He does not leave the question abstract. He gives his own answer as an example: he and the teachers around him are here "to enlighten humanity," they are "great communicators," and they know that is their strength. The alignment, he says, is what makes everything work. "So everything is in alignment."

He goes further, and this is the sharpest line in the career section. Purpose, he argues, has to "go beyond making money" and "go beyond becoming famous." It "should go beyond yourself." His reasoning is that real joy comes from impact: "Ultimately you will only get your true joy when you have a purpose that can impact others. Even if it is something small, it's fine, but it will still impact others."

"Ultimately you will only get your true joy when you have a purpose that can impact others."

— Sri Krishnaji, Q&A video, approximately 6:19

For a young person, that three-part structure is useful as a checklist. Ask what the world will need. Ask where your strengths actually lie, honestly, even if the answer is not flattering. Then ask what you want to give. Krishnaji's advice to the young is not to be lazy, not to fall into addictions, and not to stay in a suffering state. "Be in a beautiful state," he says, and he frames the entire career search as something done from that place rather than from fear or scarcity.

Is Destiny Predetermined, or Can You Change It?

The second question, from a Mumbai entrepreneur who started in real estate three years earlier, carries a tension many people will recognize. Since childhood, the questioner has heard two sayings: that what is in your destiny will come to you, and that you create your own destiny. "I believe in self-effort," the questioner says, "yet when an important desire does not manifest despite sincere efforts, doubt crops in." How should the mind stay steady when effort does not produce the result?

Krishnaji opens with a show of hands, a teacher's trick for surfacing assumptions. He asks how many people believe their destiny is pre-written and cannot be changed. Then he asks how many believe there is a window of opportunity, through "effort, state and grace," to change it. More hands go up for the second view, and he responds warmly: "Wonderful." He is signaling that the question is not settled, and that he will not settle it in a few minutes. He notes that the topic is treated in depth at a separate program, which he calls Mahatapas, and that the full discussion lives there.

His core claim, though, arrives quickly. Every person has a destiny, he says, and destinies come in different grades: "Now you can have a great destiny, ordinary destiny. There's nothing like bad destiny." That phrasing shifts the frame from fate as a verdict to fate as a range. The question becomes not whether you have a destiny but what quality of destiny you are building.

"There's nothing like bad destiny."

— Sri Krishnaji, Q&A video, approximately 8:30

How Does Your Inner State Shape What Happens to You?

The mechanism Krishnaji offers is the heart of the answer. A great destiny, he says, is created "from a beautiful state." The reasoning he gives is part spiritual and part physiological. In a beautiful state, "you're opening the doors for universal intelligence to flow into your life." He also describes a shift in brain activity: from a beautiful state, "you are allowing your brain to move from beta to alpha to theta, which means you have greater intelligence, greater clarity, less confusion, less worry, and less anxiety." Beta is the everyday, active, often anxious waking mind; alpha and theta are the slower, quieter states associated with relaxed awareness and reverie. Krishnaji connects the shift in brain state to decision quality, not just to comfort.

The argument has a sequence. Inner state comes first. Clarity follows. Then comes discovery of dharma, which he describes as discovering "your purpose, your destiny," and only then "your enlightened state." In his telling, destiny is not a fixed outcome you wait for. It is a direction you move toward when your mind is calm enough to see it and your choices are aligned with your purpose.

This is also where the answer to the questioner's frustration begins to take shape. If effort is not producing results, the first question is not whether destiny exists but what state the effort is coming from. Krishnaji makes a related point about impulsive decisions. He describes a person who lost a job and then, by his account, lost "lakhs of rupees" in the stock market after chasing fast gains through constant trading. His point is not about trading as such. It is that a mind driven by urgency and greed makes the kind of choice that undermines any destiny worth having. He warns against that state in the same breath as he warns against laziness and addiction.

Where Does Divine Grace Fit Into Self-Effort?

The Q&A ends on a note that many listeners will find either comforting or unfalsifiable, depending on their temperament. Krishnaji speaks of making decisions with "the divine blessing" guiding you, and he links clear decisions to the way a person who is oriented toward purpose will "have a great destiny." He does not present grace as a replacement for effort. The sequence he describes is one of effort, a beautiful inner state, clarity, and purpose, with grace working inside that sequence rather than outside it.

For a reader who is not a student of this tradition, the most useful thing to take from the video is a set of practical questions rather than a doctrine. Before you choose a career, ask what the market is doing, what your strengths are, and what purpose would make the work feel like it mattered beyond you. Before you judge your effort as failed, ask what state you were in when you made it. Those are questions anyone can test against their own life. Krishnaji's claim is that the answers will be clearer when the mind is quiet, and that the quiet is itself part of the work.

Where to go from here

This Q&A is short, and it is a live conversation rather than a structured course, so it raises more questions than it fully answers. A reader who wants to go further can take the three career tests seriously and write them out: a short list of fields the world is moving toward, an honest account of where you are strong and where you are not, and a single sentence about how you want your work to affect others. For the destiny question, the most practical step is to notice your inner state before a major decision and to ask whether the decision is coming from clarity or from urgency. Krishnaji says the deeper teaching on destiny is taken up at Mahatapas, a program he refers to in the video, and that is the place to look for the full argument. Until then, the video offers a clear starting point: know the world, know yourself, awaken to your purpose, and make your choices from a beautiful state.

[0:03] Does a person understand and choose a

[0:05] career path especially the younger ones

[0:08] and how their parents should guide them?

[0:10] You must awaken to your dharma. You must

[0:13] awaken to your purpose. So whatever

[0:16] field you are choosing ultimately you

[0:18] must see where you are strong in.

[0:20] Namaste Krishna Gam from Vijayada. I'm

[0:23] currently BT finally student.

[0:25] >> So this is my first abundance festival.

[0:28] >> Welcome to the abundance festival. So

[0:30] before sharing asking a question I want

[0:31] to share an experience.

[0:33] >> Okay.

[0:33] >> On first day you are the one who said

[0:35] that a Korean chef is afraid to address

[0:38] people on stage.

[0:39] >> Yes.

[0:40] >> I'm likewise I'm also the same kind of

[0:42] person

[0:43] >> who is afraid to stand in group.

[0:46] >> But now I'm the one who standing here

[0:49] among all and asking the question. I'm

[0:51] very thankful for giving us Krishna G.

[0:54] So my question is I'm about to complete

[0:56] my bachelor's degree.

[0:57] >> Okay. which I don't know why I chose a

[1:00] person understand and choose a career

[1:02] path especially the younger ones

[1:05] >> who after 12 how should they choose

[1:08] their career path and how their parents

[1:10] should guide them to choose the right

[1:11] career path which they visited that's my

[1:13] question Krishna G what are you doing

[1:14] now you said

[1:16] >> bachelor's degree

[1:17] >> in which field

[1:18] >> computer science

[1:19] >> computer science good good field only

[1:20] you're doing okay please sit down so

[1:23] there are many aspects to understanding

[1:25] how you choose your career

[1:29] The way you generally people choose

[1:31] their career or have been choosing their

[1:34] career is basically from

[1:36] understanding

[1:38] where the world is going what are the

[1:41] changes which field has the maximum

[1:43] demand and which field which field pays

[1:46] me the most right where can I get the

[1:48] most salary and uh that is how you

[1:51] choose your field it's really not

[1:52] connection or passion so

[1:55] understand that there two or three

[1:57] elements that go into choosing your

[1:58] field. The first is you must have

[2:00] tremendous knowledge in understanding

[2:03] where the world is heading where the

[2:05] world is moving in the next 10 or 20

[2:08] years. This understanding you should

[2:10] have and how will you get this

[2:11] understanding? You will get this

[2:13] understanding by meeting a lot of people

[2:16] by going to lot of uh forums where you

[2:19] can understand reading a lot. So by this

[2:23] you understand where the world is

[2:25] moving. Right now we all know it is

[2:27] moving in the direction of artificial

[2:28] intelligence. That is the future.

[2:30] Artificial intelligence means computer

[2:32] science and all the stuff. AI is going

[2:35] to be a big big boom. Robotics, cyber

[2:38] security, all these are going to be big

[2:40] booms. So that is your practical

[2:43] information that you should have that

[2:46] these are the fields that are the fields

[2:48] of the future and this is where I need

[2:50] to focus on and if I focus on this field

[2:53] the chances of me getting a good salary

[2:55] the chances of me getting my job is very

[2:58] very high. Okay, that practical

[3:00] knowledge you must have. The second most

[3:02] important thing you must have is what is

[3:04] it that you are really inclined to do?

[3:08] Some of you can be great managers that

[3:11] is you could be people who can manage

[3:13] things very well. Some of you could be

[3:16] great marketing people that is give you

[3:18] anything you can market or sell. Okay.

[3:21] Some of you could be great technologist

[3:23] that is you love just being behind the

[3:25] computers and coding and doing programs.

[3:27] You don't like to talk to anybody but

[3:30] you love coding. So you have to

[3:32] understand slowly what is your strength?

[3:36] What is your calling? Where are you

[3:38] strong? Are you strong as a sales and

[3:40] marketing person? Are you strong as a

[3:42] manager? Are you strong as a

[3:45] technologist? And very few people are

[3:48] entrepreneurs. That is they have a

[3:50] mindset where they will say I will risk

[3:54] it all.

[3:56] Even if everything goes, it's fine. Even

[3:59] if I become a popper and lose all my

[4:01] wealth, it is fine. But I am going to

[4:03] jump and explore and see if I can find

[4:06] the gold.

[4:07] Okay. So that is a very different

[4:10] mindset. So you have to be very very

[4:13] honest to yourself and understand

[4:16] which direction you are leaning into. So

[4:18] whatever field you are choosing

[4:20] ultimately you must see where you are

[4:22] strong in

[4:24] choose that. And the third most

[4:26] important thing is you must awaken to

[4:28] your

[4:30] >> dharma. You must awaken to your purpose.

[4:34] You must have the answer to the

[4:36] question, why am I here on this planet?

[4:39] Like Shupriti Janai, we have our answer.

[4:42] Our answer is we are here on this planet

[4:45] to enlighten all of you. To enlighten

[4:48] humanity.

[4:51] We are great teachers. We can teach

[4:54] people. We are great communicators. We

[4:57] can communicate. That is our strength.

[4:59] Understand? So we know our strength. We

[5:02] know our dharma. We know what we have to

[5:04] do. And we are doing that. So everything

[5:05] is in alignment. And do you think

[5:07] spirituality will die ever?

[5:10] >> Never. Every youngster please make sure

[5:13] that you have lot of knowledge around

[5:16] what is happening in the world today. It

[5:19] is changing at a rapid pace

[5:22] and after having this knowledge you have

[5:24] to work very hard to keep up with the

[5:27] pace. Understand as you are pursuing

[5:30] your career, there are a million people

[5:33] pursuing that same career from all over

[5:35] the world

[5:38] there are a million people. So make sure

[5:41] that you work very hard. You are on top

[5:44] of the things. Don't be lazy. Don't get

[5:46] into addictions and don't be in a

[5:49] suffering state. Be in a beautiful

[5:51] state. So work on identifying what's

[5:54] happening in the world. Work on

[5:56] identifying what you are good at and

[5:59] above all this work on awakening to your

[6:02] dharma in understanding what you want to

[6:05] do this what you want to do to this

[6:07] world how you want to contribute. It

[6:09] should go beyond making money. It should

[6:12] go beyond becoming famous. It should go

[6:14] beyond yourself. Ultimately you will

[6:17] only get your true joy when you have a

[6:19] purpose that can impact others. Even if

[6:22] it is something small, it's fine but it

[6:25] will still impact others. So that you

[6:27] should awaken to. Okay.

[6:30] >> Namaste Sri Krishna G. Uh I am Shwa from

[6:32] Mumbai and I have started my real estate

[6:35] journey as an entrepreneur 3 years ago.

[6:38] Firstly I would like to uh really you

[6:41] know say key I just love the way you you

[6:44] know talk to the audience because that's

[6:45] the way I'm getting connected with. So

[6:48] uh my question is you know since

[6:50] childhood I have heard two uh phrases.

[6:53] One is if something is in your destiny

[6:55] you will get it and the second is

[6:58] contrary to it you you create your own

[7:00] destiny.

[7:00] >> Oh you got both the phrases. Wonderful

[7:03] >> both the phrases.

[7:04] >> Very very smart.

[7:05] >> So I believe in self effort yet when an

[7:07] important desire does not manifest

[7:09] despite sincere efforts doubt crops in

[7:12] and about destiny uh timing and control.

[7:16] How should I correctly understand the

[7:18] relation between destiny and self

[7:20] effort? And how should the mind remain

[7:22] steady when effort does not bring the

[7:24] expected result?

[7:27] Okay,

[7:29] please sit down.

[7:30] >> Thank you.

[7:30] >> So, how many of you here believe that

[7:33] you all have a destiny that is

[7:35] pre-written? That is it's already

[7:37] written,

[7:39] cannot be changed.

[7:42] How many of you believe?

[7:46] Okay. How many of you here believe that

[7:48] there is a window of opportunity through

[7:52] effort,

[7:54] state and grace to change your destiny?

[7:58] Ah many of you believe that. Wonderful.

[8:01] So understand uh see this whole entire

[8:05] topic of destiny and whether it's there

[8:08] or not there. It's a topic that we

[8:10] address in Mahatapas.

[8:12] That's where we go deep into it. Okay.

[8:15] To understand how uh destiny flows and

[8:18] whether it's there or not there. Every

[8:20] one of you have a destiny. Now you can

[8:23] have a great destiny ordinary destiny.

[8:25] There's nothing like bad destiny. Okay.

[8:28] Now many of you here know how to create

[8:30] a great destiny. Right? You my students.

[8:33] How do you create a great destiny?

[8:37] >> From a beautiful state. Because in a

[8:39] beautiful state, you're opening the

[8:40] doors for universal intelligence to flow

[8:42] into your life. From a beautiful state,

[8:45] you are allowing your brain to move from

[8:46] beta to alpha to theta, which means you

[8:49] have greater intelligence, greater

[8:50] clarity, less confusion, less worry, and

[8:52] less anxiety.

[8:55] And if you move to the next step of

[8:57] discovering your dharma, which means you

[8:59] discovered your

[9:02] purpose, your destiny,

[9:05] then you're moving towards your destiny.

[9:07] And then ultimately your enlightened

[9:09] state. So all this will only make you

[9:10] have a great destiny. So the entire path

[9:14] for having a great destiny. You have it

[9:15] here in oneness. You can write your

[9:18] destiny. Not only you can write your

[9:20] destiny, you can also shape others

[9:22] destiny. Like I'm shaping your destiny.

[9:24] I cannot write your destiny but I'm

[9:26] shaping it. Right? So you have the power

[9:28] to shape it.

[9:31] All this can happen when your state is

[9:33] beautiful.

[9:35] and understand that if our life is a

[9:37] straight line that is what we wish for

[9:39] and the effort we put gives the exact

[9:41] result then this world must be an

[9:42] extraordinarily beautiful world

[9:45] that is I know okay I am going to work

[9:47] for 8 hours a day today and tomorrow

[9:50] this is what is going to happen to me

[9:52] and everything will be fine you just now

[9:55] saw that a person got lost lost the job

[9:58] after many years of hard work so life is

[10:00] not a straight line

[10:03] that is if you all knew that if you a

[10:05] lakh of rupees in stock market today and

[10:07] tomorrow it will become two lakhs and

[10:08] day after tomorrow it will become four

[10:09] lakhs what will you all be doing

[10:12] none of you will be here in a

[10:18] you will say why I need abundance

[10:20] festival I don't need abundance festival

[10:21] at all you will all be in the brokerage

[10:25] firm or online continuously trading one

Krishnaji describes three elements: understanding where the world is heading over the next 10 to 20 years, honestly identifying your natural inclinations such as management, marketing, or technical work, and awakening to your dharma or purpose. He argues that market demand and salary alone are not enough, and that the decision should reflect where your strengths lie.
In this Q&A, Krishnaji says every person has a destiny and that destinies vary in quality, from great to ordinary. He suggests that effort, inner state, and grace together create a window in which destiny can be shaped, and he points to a beautiful inner state as the foundation for creating a great destiny.
A beautiful state is the calm, positive inner condition Krishnaji recommends as the starting point for decisions and for building destiny. He links it to clearer thinking, saying it allows the brain to move from beta to alpha to theta, bringing greater clarity, less confusion, and less anxiety.
In the video, dharma is discussed as one's purpose, the answer to why you are here on this planet. Krishnaji argues that a career should go beyond making money or fame and should impact others, since true joy comes from a purpose that benefits people beyond yourself.
Krishnaji does not give a single formula, but his answer points to inner state and clarity. He suggests that effort made from urgency, greed, or confusion is less likely to lead to a great destiny than effort made from a calm and purpose-aligned mind, and he refers to a deeper treatment of this topic at the Mahatapas program.
Krishnaji gives the example of a person who lost a job and then lost lakhs of rupees trading in the stock market in pursuit of quick gains. He uses it to illustrate how a mind driven by urgency makes choices that undermine a good destiny, rather than as a general judgment on investing.
