Known affectionately as "Michael Watsu", Michael Hallock is a Watsu therapist and a teacher of Healing Dance, a form of aquatic bodywork. He approaches the therapy as an art form, and describes each session as an intuitive dance that unfolds a deeper connection with oneself. A pioneer of aquatic bodywork in Asia Pacific, he teaches internationally.
His path began in 1995, when he first experienced aquatic bodywork and found a quality of presence and peace he had never known. He calls it "love-at-first-float". Around the same time yoga entered his life, while he was teaching English in Granada, Spain. He was struggling with anxiety, insomnia and chronic fatigue, and yoga began to change his health and his experience of the world. In 1998 he left for India with a one-way ticket. He found the teachings of Swami Satyananda and spent the better part of three years at the Bihar School of Yoga Ashram, where he experienced yoga as a way of life: self-awareness, service and devotion, beyond the postures, breathing and meditation.
Leaving the ashram, he found he had gained resilience, adaptability, contentment and calm, along with the ability to regulate his nervous system and relax deeply at any time. He began teaching in 2000 and soon taught widely in retreats across Southeast Asia and Australia.
Over two decades his foundation in yoga and healing arts has taken in massage, yoga, optimal breathing, relaxation, meditation, mindfulness, self-acupressure, ecstatic dance, chi nei tsang abdominal massage, energy healing, kirtan and aquatic bodywork. Healing Dance, the form he teaches, was created by Alexander George as a branch of Watsu. It brings flowing movement, restful stillness and an emphasis on relating and mirroring the receiver. Michael's courses, trainings and retreats are guided by one question: how can we cultivate peace and joy in ourselves, and share that with the world?
Worth Knowing
Michael Hallock, affectionately known as "Michael Watsu" in aquatic bodywork communities, is a Watsu therapist, Healing Dance instructor, and yoga teacher who has spent decades cultivating and teaching practices centered on the cultivation of peace and joy—both personally and as something to share outward. His reputation rests not on flashy credentials but on a specific journey: he arrived in India on a one-way ticket in 1998, found Swami Satyananda and the Bihar School of Yoga Ashram, spent roughly three years there, and returned with a resilience and capacity for deep relaxation that transformed his approach to helping others. What distinguishes him from many wellness practitioners is his insistence on treating therapy as an art form—each Watsu or Healing Dance session is framed as an intuitive dance unfolding in real time, not a protocol executed. He pioneered the teaching of aquatic bodywork in Asia Pacific starting around 2000, and his international presence since then reflects both his skill and his philosophical integration of yoga, meditation, energy work, and somatic practice into a coherent vision. People care about his work because he's built a genuinely alternative approach to healing that refuses the clinical-therapeutic split: his sessions are simultaneously physically healing and spiritually attuned.
