Marla Leigh (Goldstein) is a frame drummer, world percussionist, flautist, composer and educator. Her website describes her as one of the few female professional frame drummers in the world today, and as an internationally recognized performer and teacher.
A classically trained musician, she began playing at the age of three and never stopped. She holds a BFA and MFA in Percussion from California Institute of the Arts, where she studied with Glen Velez, John Bergamo, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, Randy Gloss and Layne Redmond. She is drawn to rhythm from cultures around the world and to bringing people together through what she calls the universal language of rhythm.
Marla is the founder and CEO of Frame Drum Academy, an online community of frame drum students from around the world. She also created a signature line of frame drums with the Cooperman Company. Her debut album and music video, Rhythms of Tof Miriam, was recorded in Israel and honors the ancient lineage of women frame drummers through song and visuals.
She teaches and performs in many settings: wellness and drumming retreats at places such as Esalen Institute, Harbin and Kalani, and workshops and residencies for yoga studios, universities, synagogues and conventions. She has presented clinics at Tambouri Mundi Festival in Germany, Zurich Arts Festival, NAFDA Festivals in Vermont and New Jersey, California PAS Day of Percussion and Asheville Percussion Festival.
Marla believes in the power of music to help transform consciousness. She has played live for yoga teachers including Saul David Raye, Shiva Rea and Hala Khouri. Her compositions have appeared on Hala Khouri's yoga DVD, in Janet Stone's iPhone yoga application, and in the films Bold Native and The Cellist. Her yoga programs draw on drumming, Hebrew and Vedic chanting, flute and ambient electronics. Saul David Raye, an internationally acclaimed yoga teacher, has called her a wonderful teacher who has inspired many groups.
Worth Knowing
Marla Leigh is one of the few female professional frame drummers actively working today, and she brought that skill—along with flute and composition—into a deliberate intersection between world percussion and spiritual practice. She's serious about frame drumming as an instrument and tradition: she studied under Glen Velez, John Bergamo, Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, Layne Redmond, and Randy Gloss at CalArts, pursuing both a BFA and MFA in percussion. But she's equally serious about the ceremonial and meditative dimensions of rhythm—she leads retreats at Esalen, Harbin, and Kalani, provides live percussion and flute for yoga classes grounded in Nada Yoga and Vedic chanting, and has played alongside teachers like Shiva Rea and Hala Khouri. Her debut album, Rhythms of Tof Miriam (2020), honors an ancient lineage of women frame drummers and was recorded in Israel. People follow her work because she holds both traditions—the technical mastery of world percussion and the spiritual intentionality of rhythm as a gateway to consciousness—without reducing either to cliché.
