Gary Schmidt is a Canadian pianist and composer of meditative and healing piano music. He grew up in rural, French-speaking Quebec, and at the age of six he told his parents he would be a pianist when he grew up. He taught himself to play on an old white piano, listening to records and trying to follow the sheet music. His formal studies earned him the highest level piano performance degree from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
His early career focused mostly on classical piano. For the past ten years he has moved toward the more contemplative side of music. His life motto is "Enhancing Life Thru Music." His playing is melodic and meditative, a blend of romanticism, classical and minimalism, and his live performances are described as speaking directly to the heart.
His first album of original music, Landscapes of the Heart (2016), was produced by Grammy Award winning Will Ackerman of Windham Hill fame. It went on to win album of the year awards for Piano with Instruments, including one from One World Radio in Europe. His second album, Even for Moment (2018), earned two album of the year nominations in the same category. His Christmas album, Christmas Meditations, has had several thousand streams on Sirius XM over three years. Afterthoughts, an album of original piano solos released in 2023, stayed at number one among new releases on Amazon Music for Relaxation Music for over a month. In 2024, his song "Face That Lights My Face" was the 11th most streamed song on solopianoradio.com (Whispering Piano), out of more than 4000 in rotation. He also placed second out of 800 submissions in the Gospel Music Association's national songwriting competition.
Worth Knowing
Gary Schmidt is a Canadian pianist and composer listed on BrightStar as a Meditation Teacher, and his work centers on meditative and healing piano music. He grew up in rural, French-speaking Quebec and told his parents at age six that he would be a pianist; he taught himself on an old white piano by listening to records and following sheet music. He later earned the highest-level piano performance degree from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, and his early career was rooted in classical piano. Over roughly the past decade he has moved toward the contemplative side of music, and his stated life motto, "Enhancing Life Thru Music," frames that shift. The playing is melodic and romantic in its harmonic warmth, with minimal arrangements that leave room for the line to breathe. His first original album, Landscapes of the Heart (2016), was produced by Grammy winner Will Ackerman, and it went on to win album of the year in the Piano with Instruments category. Listeners who come to him through streaming radio tend to stay for the restraint rather than for any single moment of drama.
