Can Hope Rewire the Brain? Jill Bolte Taylor on Recovery

"Hello. I think we're live." That's how Martha Beck opens this hour-long Gathering Room, a livestream she recorded for her audience, and it is an unremarkable line delivered in a remarkable setting: a friendly, loose, half-technical hello from a host who is about to spend an hour with a woman whose own brain was nearly erased by a stroke and then rebuilt. The subject, announced in the first minute, is hope. Not hope as a greeting-card sentiment but hope as something Beck and her guest, neuroscientist Jill Bolte Taylor, treat as a working mechanism, one that runs through the cells of a single skull and, Beck argues, through the cells of groups, communities and ecosystems alike. The conversation is a meditation on what the brain does when it believes it can heal, and on the uncomfortable corollary that it does something very different when it gives up.

What happened to Jill Bolte Taylor's brain?

Beck's introduction carries the outline of the story that made Taylor's name. A Harvard brain scientist, she suffered a massive left-hemisphere stroke at 37 and watched, as a trained observer, her own brain become badly damaged. Over roughly eight years it was gradually rebuilt, and by Beck's account she recovered completely. Beck says her friend's "My Stroke of Insight" TED talk was the first TED talk to go viral, and that the scans, scars and reports exist to back the account up. "It's so rare that people accuse me that it wasn't even real," Taylor says, half joking, of the skepticism she meets. "It's like here's the brain scan. Here's the scar. Here's the reports. I think it was real."

The thing Taylor keeps returning to is not the damage but the rebuilding, and specifically the role her own attitude played in it. "I believed in the ability of the brain to recover," she says, "and it is this miraculous collection of cells." Her point is practical rather than mystical as she frames it: the cells can be worked with or they can be obstructed. You can help them do what they are supposed to do, or you can get in their way by deciding in advance that you will not get better, and so you will not try. "I believed," she says. "I'm a believer. I had hope, and look at what happened." She describes the full recovery as a kind of gravy on the meal, a bonus she is grateful for, and Beck notes with evident delight that Taylor now considers her post-stroke life better than her life before the stroke.

Why does hope change the way recovery works?

This is where the conversation turns from anecdote to argument. Taylor describes a particular kind of inner narration that, in her experience, would have worked against her healing. If she had measured her existence against her former life, if she had told herself she was pathetic, bad, wrong, less than she used to be because she had fallen off the Harvard ladder, she would have been broadcasting a low-frequency signal. "The weight and energetic of that circuitry would only get in the way of my recovery," she says, "because it essentially says, well, the buck stops here." So she made a deliberate choice to decline that story, because it "wasn't serving the bigger picture of the recovery process."

Beck, who has spent a career writing about the stories people tell themselves, is clearly thrilled by the claim, and she presses Taylor on the energetic language. Her guest's technical credentials, she notes, were built in a world that rarely talked about energy. Taylor's answer is her most expansive: she says that when she lost her left hemisphere she lost the sense of "me, the individual," and shifted into the energetic of a whole, in which there is, in her words, "no limitation." That is a striking thing for a neuroanatomist to say, and the conversation does not pretend it is settled science. It is offered as a lived report from someone who believes the report matters.

Beck supplies an example from her own life. Shortly after a recent foot surgery, she recounts, Taylor began focusing her attention on the foot, and Beck felt something she describes as a plugged-in sensation, "pleasantly, not unpleasant but a very intense electrical charge." Taylor then offered to pull some of it out if it was too much. Beck's response, half astonished, was "You can do magic." Taylor's reply reframes the whole thing as a question of attention and belief: "It's a matter of what are we focusing on and what do we believe in?"

What are the four characters of the brain?

The most useful part of the hour, for listeners who have not read Taylor's book, is her map of the brain's "characters." Beck asks her to run through the system quickly, and Taylor does so with the clarity of a teacher who has explained this many times. It is worth slowing down on, because the framework is the bridge between the mystical claims and the everyday ones.

The deepest layer is the limbic system, the emotional tissue we share with other mammals, including the amygdala, the hippocampus and the anterior cingulate gyrus. Taylor describes these cells as the place where incoming information about the present moment is processed through emotion, and where the emotional residue of the past is stored. The right hemisphere lives in the present: it takes in "what's coming in," what the experience of this moment is. The left hemisphere, by contrast, processes things immediately by asking whether it has ever seen anything like this before, and it projects the experience into the future. In her shorthand, "the left hemisphere experiences time while the right hemisphere is just right here right now."

The left hemisphere, Taylor says, is about details, "details about me in relationship to the external world." It is the part of the mind that organizes, schedules and controls. She describes its character with some affection: it is punctual, it got us here on time, and it likes to control everything, people and places included. The neocortex, the newer tissue on top, is the thinking, analytical layer. Beyond the four characters, Taylor moves toward what she calls the right thinking tissue, the portion of the brain that connects consciousness to something larger than the self, which is where the conversation drifts toward wholeness and connection.

The usefulness of this map, as Beck frames it, is that it lets an ordinary person see which character is driving at a given moment. Taylor's book, Beck says, takes sophisticated brain anatomy and boils it down to simple tools that people can use to choose the kind of joyful life Taylor has built without first having a stroke. You do not have to be a neuroscientist to notice when the left hemisphere is catastrophizing about the future, or when the limbic system is replaying old fear, and to ask which of those is actually running the show.

Can hope work at the level of groups and ecosystems?

Beck's own framing of the episode is that Taylor speaks to hope in microcosm, the neural networks of one brain, while Beck looks at how the same systems and processes operate at the macro level, among groups of people and across ecosystems. The published description says so directly. The conversation gestures at this throughout, with Beck returning again and again to what she calls the larger picture, to connection and to the possibility of peace on earth, and with Taylor describing a shift from "me and mine" to a sense of the whole. Taylor's claim that influence crosses distance, that what happens on one side of the planet can affect the other, is offered as an analogy for her picture of intention moving through a shared field. Beck goes further, imagining what might happen if people used their conscious brains to generate a kind of force field and directed it from one person to another. Both women treat this as a hypothesis about the connections between minds, not a finished theory, and that honesty is part of why the hour holds together.

What makes the episode worth reading in full is its insistence that hope is not a passive feeling. In Taylor's account it is a set of choices about attention and story, made by cells that respond to those choices. It can be obstructed by a narrative of defeat, and it can be cultivated by a deliberate refusal to let that narrative run the show. Whether one accepts the energetic claims or not, the core observation is hard to dismiss: a person who has decided they will recover is in a different relationship to the work of recovery than one who has decided they won't.

Where to go from here

If the hour leaves you curious, start with the source. Taylor's book, Whole Brain Living, is the fuller version of the four-character framework that she walks through on the call, and Beck says she has given it to hundreds of people. Taylor's TED talk, My Stroke of Insight, is the account of the stroke itself, the scans and the rebuilding that Beck mentions in her introduction. Beyond that, the most practical takeaway from the conversation is a question you can ask in any hard moment: which of the characters in my brain is talking right now, and is its story the one I want to be living by? Treat hope the way Taylor describes it, as something you practice rather than something you wait to feel.

[0:06] Hello. I think we're live. Whoo

[0:08] hoo. Hello. Hello, everybody.

[0:11] Welcome to the gathering room

[0:12] as usual but not as usual. A

[0:16] fantastic, amazing special

[0:18] guest is going to come in. We

[0:19] are going to talk together

[0:21] about a topic that I think is

[0:23] of interest to all of us. It's

[0:24] about hope and here with me is

[0:28] the great, the brilliant, the

[0:29] hilarious, the adorable, and

[0:32] the Intrepid Jill Bolte Taylor.

[0:35] Now, Jill is with us a few, I

[0:37] think a couple of months ago

[0:38] because she's written this

[0:40] incredible book, Whole Brain

[0:41] Living and II. Want everybody

[0:44] to go out and buy this book

[0:46] immediately because everyone

[0:48] I've given it to and I've given

[0:50] it to literally hundreds of

[0:51] people. If you count everyone

[0:53] online and I get Emails every

[0:54] day telling me how great the

[0:56] book is. like I eat anything

[0:59] and um it's actually now you

[1:02] don't know Jill. I don't know

[1:03] what rock you've been living

[1:05] under but you sure haven't been

[1:06] watching Ted Talks because her.

[1:10] brilliant Ted Talk. my stroke

[1:11] of insight was the first TED

[1:14] talk ever to go viral and it

[1:17] described Jill's experience as

[1:18] a Harvard Neuro anonymous

[1:20] having a massive left

[1:22] hemisphere stroke when she was

[1:23] what Thirty-seven Jill. Yeah.

[1:26] yeah. And uh watching with a

[1:29] scientists eye as her own brain

[1:33] was very very badly damaged and

[1:37] then very gradually rebuilt

[1:39] over a period of about 8 years

[1:40] and miraculous She recovered

[1:45] completely. Um something I

[1:46] think II think that counts as a

[1:49] miracle. Jill. I don't have you

[1:51] ever heard of anybody having

[1:53] that massive of a stroke and

[1:54] getting absolute full function

[1:57] back? You know, it's so rare

[1:58] that people accuse me that it

[2:01] wasn't even real.

[2:05] It's like here's the brain

[2:05] scan. Here's the scar. Here's

[2:07] the reports. I think it was

[2:09] real. Yeah, I know. You know, I

[2:11] believed in the ability of the

[2:12] brain to recover and it is this

[2:14] miraculous collection of cells

[2:16] and we can either work with the

[2:18] cells help them do what they're

[2:21] supposed to do or we can get in

[2:22] their way or we can hinder them

[2:25] by saying, no, I'm not going to

[2:26] get better. So, I'm not even

[2:27] going to try and so, you know,

[2:30] I and I but II believed. I

[2:31] mean, I'm a believer II had

[2:34] hope and II was a believer and

[2:36] look at look at what happened.

[2:37] So I'm I feel I feel blessed

[2:40] and very grateful and just you

[2:42] know, this is what I call gravy

[2:44] time because this is the gravy

[2:47] on top of the meal. I mean,

[2:48] this is the special. This makes

[2:50] it extra special. I almost

[2:51] wasn't Yeah. it is the gravy

[2:54] because it's actually better by

[2:58] your account than before you

[2:59] add the stroke because here's

[3:00] the thing you guys, everybody

[3:01] who comes to the gathering room

[3:02] knows I'm obsessed with

[3:04] awakening and the

[3:05] transformation of consciousness

[3:06] and the establishment of peace

[3:07] on earth and everything. Well,

[3:10] when Jill rebuilt her brain,

[3:13] she was able to selectively

[3:15] choose to focus on the aspects

[3:18] of her brain that bring joy,

[3:20] love, compassion, connection,

[3:22] and mute or um somehow not

[3:28] control but this inhibit

[3:31] inhibit, inhibit, or debit

[3:34] inhibited the parts of the

[3:35] brain that most of us have

[3:37] where we hate life and we just

[3:39] want to kill everything by

[3:40] ourselves that It's something

[3:43] you like. She didn't want

[3:44] anymore. So, well, that got in

[3:47] the way of the recovery. Oh,

[3:48] really? more because it would.

[3:51] well, if if I'm feeling, if I'm

[3:53] beating my own existence and I

[3:56] am not great with a sense of

[3:58] gratitude, then I'm bringing in

[4:00] an energetic that is low me.

[4:02] I'm pathetic. I'm bad. I'm

[4:05] wrong. I'm no good. I'm less

[4:07] than I used to be because I

[4:08] fell off the Harvard ladder

[4:09] blah blah blah. I'm body in the

[4:12] bed instead of a neuro

[4:14] anonymous or Harvard and that

[4:16] the weight and energetic of

[4:18] that circuitry would only get

[4:20] in the way of my recovery

[4:22] because it essentially says,

[4:24] well, the buck stops here and

[4:27] we're stopped and I didn't want

[4:28] any of that. So, I had to

[4:30] purposely choose not to do that

[4:33] because that that wasn't

[4:35] serving the bigger picture of

[4:37] the recovery process. So,

[4:39] what's so interesting that you

[4:41] talk about things like the

[4:43] energetics and that's something

[4:44] that is was not a big deal at

[4:47] Harvard when I was there and we

[4:47] didn't talk a lot about energy

[4:48] and so I hear you're just as

[4:51] scientific as you ever were.

[4:52] Just a sharp as ever but you

[4:55] talk a lot about the aesthetics

[4:57] of um people's interpersonal

[4:59] dynamics and I have to tell the

[5:01] crowd uh during my recent foot

[5:03] surgery right after the

[5:04] surgery, I was talking to Jill

[5:07] and she she started asking me

[5:08] about my foot and turning her

[5:09] attention it and it felt like

[5:11] my foot was plugged in.

[5:14] pleasantly, not unpleasant but

[5:16] a very intense electrical

[5:18] charges. then and then Jill

[5:22] actually said, if that's a

[5:22] little too much, let me pull

[5:24] some out and I was like, uh

[5:25] huh. You can do magic. I

[5:30] thought you'll do it. Yeah. You

[5:34] know, I think it's a matter of

[5:36] uh what are we focusing and

[5:37] what do we believe in? You

[5:38] know, everything boils down to

[5:41] if I, you know, when I lost my

[5:42] left hemisphere, I lost the me,

[5:44] the individual as I lost me,

[5:46] the individual. it wasn't about

[5:48] me and mine or how much could I

[5:50] get or who was I or anything

[5:52] that had anything to do with

[5:53] me? I shifted into the

[5:55] energetic of a whole and and as

[6:00] uh energy in the whole, there's

[6:01] no limitation every you know,

[6:03] so the energy, it doesn't

[6:04] matter where you are on the

[6:07] We're sharing an energetic the

[6:10] errors of the molecules and

[6:11] atoms are all there. Yeah.

[6:15] Influencing one another. So, of

[6:16] course, I can focus on the

[6:18] energetic of of your foot or of

[6:21] your whatever. Um I mean

[6:24] physics has proven in happens

[6:26] on one side of the planet can

[6:28] influence what's happening on

[6:29] the other side of the planet.

[6:31] So, imagine if we actually use

[6:33] this amazing conscious brain

[6:35] which is this amazing network

[6:38] of these magnificent cells, the

[6:40] neurons and I use that power to

[6:42] generate a force field that I

[6:44] then direct through my bean to

[6:48] your bean. Of course, that

[6:50] makes sense. I mean, it just

[6:51] makes sense simply because we

[6:53] can't see it with the left

[6:54] brain doesn't mean it's not

[6:55] real. Speaking of this, um one

[6:59] of the most amazing things

[7:01] about whole brain living is

[7:02] that that Jill takes her very

[7:03] sophisticated understanding of

[7:05] brain anatomy and she boils it

[7:07] down into some very simple um

[7:10] accessible tools that we can

[7:11] use to make choices ourselves

[7:13] to choose the same type of

[7:16] joyful life that Jill has

[7:17] achieved but without having to

[7:18] go through a stroke and she

[7:19] does that by talking about the

[7:21] four characters in the brain.

[7:23] So, if you want to just run us

[7:24] through that really quickly So,

[7:26] everybody gets. Yeah. Yeah.

[7:28] Yeah. So, when you think about

[7:29] the brain, the brain is this

[7:31] collection of cells and the

[7:34] part of the brain that we share

[7:35] with other mammals is this, the

[7:37] deeper cells of the emotional

[7:39] system, the cells of the limbic

[7:41] system and so we have two

[7:43] amygdala and hippocampus and

[7:45] two anterior singular gyro and

[7:47] these are groups of cells that

[7:49] are resulting in our experience

[7:51] bringing information in about

[7:53] the present moment and then

[7:55] processing it through emotion

[7:57] and the left hemisphere is

[7:59] going to process it immediately

[8:02] about have I ever seen anything

[8:04] like this before in the past or

[8:06] project? my experience of this

[8:08] into the future. So, the left

[8:10] hemisphere experiences time

[8:13] while the right hemisphere is

[8:14] just right here right now.

[8:15] what's coming in and what is

[8:17] the experience of the present

[8:18] moment? So, these are two very

[8:21] different emotional systems.

[8:22] The experience of the present

[8:23] moment the right brain and the

[8:26] emotion from our past in the

[8:29] left brain and then the human,

[8:31] a new tissue on top and that's

[8:33] the neo or new cortex and this

[8:36] is our thinking analytical

[8:38] tissue. So, So, in left

[8:40] hemisphere, it's all about

[8:42] processing me details, details

[8:45] about me in relationship to the

[8:47] external world. So, this is our

[8:49] a type personality and it it

[8:51] likes to control everything.

[8:52] people, places, and It was

[8:55] punctual. It got us here on

[8:56] time, right? All that and the

[9:00] the right thinking tissue is

[9:01] the portion of our brain that

[9:04] connects our consciousness to

[9:05] the consciousness of the

[9:06] present moment. So, we have

[9:08] this end up with these four

[9:10] different modules of cells and

[9:12] I named them character one and

[9:15] that's all about control and

[9:19] creating order and categorizing

[9:20] and it wants the stapler to go

[9:21] back where it belongs and it

[9:22] couldn't personalizes and it's

[9:25] it defines what's right. What

[9:27] wrong? What's good? Bad. That's

[9:28] character. One. We all have

[9:30] that character. Two is going to

[9:32] be our emotional pain from the

[9:34] past. It is our our trauma from

[9:37] the past. our addiction. Uh

[9:40] it's got addiction tissue which

[9:41] gives us craving. Um character

[9:45] three is going to be the

[9:46] emotion of the present moment

[9:47] right here, right now

[9:49] Experiential. Let's play

[9:50] together. Hey, it's good to see

[9:51] you. You know, that character

[9:54] four is going to be my higher

[9:56] self which is connected to that

[9:59] which is beyond me that of

[10:01] which I am a part of but um uh

[10:05] and I exist as atoms and

[10:07] molecules of the universe. So,

[10:09] it's where we pray to. it's

[10:11] where we monitor to. it's where

[10:12] we we meditate to and hopefully

[10:15] if we find the present moment

[10:17] and we get out of the emotional

[10:19] experiential of the present

[10:20] moment then we experience

[10:22] connection with what we might

[10:24] call god what we might call

[10:26] cosmic consciousness or

[10:28] infinite being or whatever it

[10:29] is that we call it. So, we have

[10:31] these four, four modules of

[10:33] cells resulting in four

[10:34] characters inside of the brain

[10:36] and what you advise which is so

[10:39] it's such a lovely inclusive

[10:41] model instead of saying like,

[10:43] you know, go into a cave and

[10:45] just access the right side of

[10:46] your brain and be in the

[10:47] present moment with god

[10:48] forever. Advice that you bring

[10:50] all four characters together

[10:53] and what you call a brain

[10:54] hubble. Yes. and I love the way

[10:56] you describe this because it's

[10:57] so cooperative and yeah. Well,

[11:00] the fact of the matter is we

[11:02] all have these four groups of

[11:03] cells inside of our brain and

[11:06] if we want to be whole brain,

[11:08] if we want to be a true human,

[11:10] if we want to evolve to our

[11:14] best selves, then we have to

[11:15] figure out how do we get our

[11:17] brain cells to streamline with

[11:19] one another so that at moment

[11:21] in time, we have the power to

[11:23] choose moment by moment which

[11:25] of these four characters we

[11:27] want to embody so that I can, I

[11:30] can I can live the life I want

[11:32] to live. I have the power to

[11:34] choose and in our society,

[11:37] we're taught that, you know,

[11:37] that character. one is our

[11:39] conscious brain and then our

[11:41] emotions of character to the

[11:44] experiential of character three

[11:45] and our connection to the

[11:46] higher being character for

[11:47] those are all our unconscious

[11:49] and it's like I don't know why

[11:52] they don't have to be if we

[11:54] understand what they are and

[11:57] what they do and what they

[11:58] value and we get to recognize

[12:01] when we appear as them in our

[12:02] lives, then we have that power

[12:05] to jump into any of those four

[12:09] instantaneously. call them all

[12:10] online together in what I call

[12:11] the brain huddle and have them

[12:14] have the conversation among

[12:16] them. Well, how are we all

[12:18] feeling about the current

[12:19] situation You're all going to

[12:21] have a different value. They're

[12:22] all going to have a different

[12:23] experience and then, they

[12:25] negotiate. Okay. Well, who who

[12:28] we going to give the microphone

[12:29] to next? so that we're making

[12:32] conscious decisions not just

[12:34] overreacting with hostility and

[12:36] pain and frustration or or

[12:39] attacking or blaming with

[12:40] little character too and

[12:41] character one can come in and

[12:43] try to fix something and be

[12:44] analytical and that might be

[12:46] appropriate or little character

[12:47] three might want to come in and

[12:48] be playful and witty and and

[12:52] Hugh and fun and playful or

[12:54] character form. I just come in

[12:55] with love and say, you know

[12:57] what will be will be. I'm

[12:59] grateful we're alive. I love

[13:01] that and ever since I read your

[13:03] book, it's so and Jill suggest

[13:04] that we name each of the four

[13:07] characters. Um so, um my little

[13:09] one is is uh Fang, No, Dolores

[13:12] Dolores. She's always sad and

[13:14] worried and then I do that's

[13:18] number one is Fang or

[13:19] something. used to be Fang.

[13:22] Fang was necessary for me to

[13:23] function at Harvard. because I

[13:26] had to go out graduate seminars

[13:29] and those professors, I had to

[13:30] have fun but now, it's our

[13:32] right and Dolores is like

[13:35] always like, oh no, but what

[13:36] what's going to happen? And

[13:38] then over on the on the other

[13:39] side, here's the weird thing,

[13:40] Jill and I named our character

[13:41] three. It's the same name which

[13:43] is pig pen. and so I've got her

[13:47] going and she loves to draw and

[13:48] paint and stuff and then yeah,

[13:49] my character for is nameless

[13:53] because it's connected to god

[13:54] and it's it's nameless. It's

[13:57] it's painless. It's a yeah. So,

[13:59] since I read Jill's book, what

[14:01] happens is I freak out about

[14:03] something and instead of trying

[14:05] to sort of hash it out

[14:07] immediately, I bring in my

[14:09] character for and say, okay,

[14:11] everybody calm down. Everyone

[14:13] calm down. It's great.

[14:16] everything's alright And then

[14:18] like uh Dolores is like uh and

[14:20] and Sarge says, okay, here's

[14:23] what we're going to do. 123

[14:26] character Nameless is always

[14:27] going to be good. Calm down and

[14:29] then pink. know I can do this.

[14:32] I know exactly what to do now.

[14:35] It actually led to a higher

[14:37] degree for me of what I call

[14:39] integrity. Now, this is the

[14:40] book I was writing at the same

[14:42] time that Jill was writing her

[14:45] book, Whole Brain Living and

[14:46] when she read it, Jill called

[14:48] me and she said, we're writing

[14:49] that the same thing. Yeah.

[14:51] Writing about it. So, for me,

[14:53] integrity means you're one

[14:54] thing. It it just means intact.

[14:56] It doesn't mean that you're a

[14:57] good girl and get stars in

[14:59] heaven. It just means that

[15:01] you're whole and undivided and

[15:02] that's what a brain huddle

[15:04] does. It makes you whole and

[15:05] undivided. It's started talking

[15:07] how this has implications.

[15:09] Jill, a brain scientist. So,

[15:10] she goes into the individual

[15:11] and like gets the details. I

[15:14] was trained as a sociologist.

[15:15] So, I go out from the

[15:16] individual. Yes. And And I look

[15:18] at groups behavior, and

[15:19] ultimately, all human behavior

[15:21] and and what's interesting and

[15:23] one of the things I talk about

[15:24] in my book is the concept of a

[15:27] fractal. So, a fractal might

[15:28] be, it's a shape in nature that

[15:30] repeats itself in different

[15:31] sizes. So, for example, your

[15:33] nervous system has a pattern

[15:35] that's very much like the roots

[15:36] of a tree which is very much

[15:38] the way a river Delta spreads

[15:40] as it goes into the sea because

[15:42] that pattern of veins extending

[15:44] is a natural pattern and they

[15:46] are fractals of each other. So,

[15:48] Jill's idea of the brain

[15:50] huddle. I was like, okay. So,

[15:52] if you do that as a human,

[15:53] you're going to start to have a

[15:55] fractal in your life of being

[15:57] able to calm the personalities

[15:59] around you who are all

[16:02] exhibiting the same four

[16:02] characters. Yes. For now, if

[16:04] you have somebody around you

[16:06] who's usually mature and who's

[16:07] suddenly freaks out you go. Oh,

[16:09] their character two is up, you

[16:11] know, and then you can bring

[16:12] your character for and and do a

[16:14] kind of embrace of of their

[16:16] brain huddle. So, you bring two

[16:18] brains together then maybe you

[16:19] get a group. So, Jill and I get

[16:22] together, we've got a fraction

[16:23] of two. We're talking about the

[16:24] same thing and I was talking to

[16:26] Jill about how I believe and I

[16:27] say this all the time on the

[16:29] gathering room. This is why the

[16:30] gathering room exists that

[16:32] there's kind of a network of

[16:34] people all over the world whose

[16:35] attention has been on

[16:37] transformation and and the

[16:39] saving of the environment and

[16:40] the well being of all people

[16:42] and all preachers and I was

[16:44] talking about how I used to

[16:45] call it the team and Jill's,

[16:48] we're on the phone. She goes,

[16:49] it's just a neural network and

[16:52] I was like, oh yeah, you're

[16:54] right. It is. So, I started to

[16:57] think about the whole world as

[17:02] one brain that needs the type

[17:06] of insight Jill is giving us in

[17:08] this book and we started

[17:08] talking what will happen if we

[17:12] can all start to live this way?

[17:14] If we can access the brain

[17:16] huddle and we can start to

[17:17] extend it beyond ourselves. and

[17:20] Jill said, you know, we should

[17:21] talk about we should talk about

[17:23] hope and I don't know Wow.

[17:26] Yeah, we're right. Yeah. Oh my

[17:29] god. There is hope in what

[17:31] you're saying. Could you talk

[17:32] more about hope and how your

[17:35] work has led you to to have

[17:37] hope and health Um uh I want to

[17:41] reiterate what you just said

[17:42] though um and I want to tell

[17:43] your audience that they're

[17:45] they're getting character. one

[17:46] Usually when we hang out and

[17:47] chat, you're your character

[17:49] three. Oh, you are too. So, I'm

[17:52] like, are you drinking a big

[17:54] glass of water? She's like, I'm

[17:55] paddle boarding. paddle board

[17:59] around on a lake. I mean, I

[18:00] just want to talk about this. I

[18:01] mean, talk about integrity,

[18:03] part of what I say in my book

[18:05] is like get what know what you

[18:07] love and then live it and so

[18:08] Jill lives a boat in the middle

[18:10] of a lake. Yeah, because it's

[18:13] very happily and in the same

[18:16] process by which you chose the

[18:19] brain you want is the process

[18:21] by which you chose the life.

[18:23] That's what I wanted. That's

[18:26] right. So, yeah, talk to me.

[18:27] What do you think about all

[18:28] this II? Look at it as you

[18:29] know, the microcosm to me is

[18:31] the cells and the relationship

[18:33] of the cells with one another

[18:35] in relationship. there's a

[18:37] sociological environment and

[18:41] how brain cells interact with

[18:42] one another and if we four

[18:45] groups of cells inside of our

[18:47] brain that are interested in

[18:50] specific things and then there

[18:51] are a whole bunch of people who

[18:53] are kind of their default

[18:54] characters, their character

[18:55] one, then they're going to have

[18:57] a sociological norm for

[18:59] character ones, right? And then

[19:01] the character twos are their

[19:03] own energetic and these are

[19:04] very different feeling people

[19:06] and they're going to have their

[19:08] own sociological norm and then

[19:11] there's character three

[19:12] sociological norm which is very

[19:15] Oriental. Very present. Very

[19:16] impulsive, Very creative. Very

[19:19] a bully. and perhaps even law

[19:21] breaking. I mean, because they

[19:23] don't respect authority, you

[19:24] know, so there's there's that

[19:26] culture and then there's the

[19:27] culture of being with god and

[19:30] so as we look at the macros of

[19:33] sociology to me, sociology is

[19:36] then how do we as humans

[19:38] instead of cells now, we're

[19:40] looking at humans in

[19:42] relationship to the earth and

[19:44] relationship to one another. so

[19:47] II, you know II. think, you

[19:49] know, we get together and we

[19:50] just bounce, bounce, bounce,

[19:51] bounce, bounce because

[19:52] everything is this fractal of

[19:55] of design. The design is the

[19:58] same but you're focused on the

[20:00] people and how do people do it

[20:02] and I'm focused on sales and

[20:05] how it sells do it so we can

[20:07] change behavior. The external

[20:10] by focusing on the cells but we

[20:11] can change the cells by

[20:14] focusing on the behavior. So,

[20:17] it's not that it's a you and

[20:18] you do what you do and to me

[20:20] and I do what I do. It's about

[20:23] their the interaction between

[20:25] the two and and that

[20:27] relationship, right? And we

[20:29] know that we can meditate or we

[20:31] can we can learn something new

[20:34] every time. Let's say we want

[20:35] to learn how to play the piano.

[20:37] Well, of course, we start out

[20:38] we're terrible. So

[20:39] behaviorally, we're terrible.

[20:41] Right. Right. In the on start

[20:44] interconnected and saying, oh,

[20:46] okay, Well, we're going to work

[20:47] and then now, all of a sudden,

[20:49] I'm a little more of fluid and

[20:51] then we're more neurons are

[20:53] going to come in and say, okay,

[20:54] well, let's read some music and

[20:55] then, we're even a little bit

[20:57] better at it and then it's

[20:59] like, then my mind says, well,

[21:00] this sounds sounds like this

[21:02] note and I can learn that and I

[21:04] can I can then produce

[21:06] automatically without reading

[21:08] music and and it's because the

[21:10] neural network is being stim by

[21:14] the behavior and by the action

[21:17] and by the hope that I can

[21:19] actually get hope to me is a

[21:22] verb. It's an action. I mean, I

[21:24] can exist and just exist and I

[21:26] can be a neuron and another

[21:28] neuron next to me and we can

[21:30] just exist but if we're going

[21:32] to do something, there has to

[21:33] be an impetus for action.

[21:35] right. And hope is one of those

[21:38] impetus for action. So, whether

[21:40] it's uh you know, so many

[21:43] different emotions that we can

[21:46] exude but hope sets us in an

[21:50] action toward a chosen

[21:52] intention in a positive vein

[21:55] and and that's all you have to

[21:56] do. That's that's the beauty of

[21:58] hope. If you have hope there,

[22:00] you have possibility and when

[22:02] there is no hope, there's no

[22:04] action and there's no

[22:04] possibility. Oh, that's

[22:06] fascinating and it's really

[22:08] interesting to talk about

[22:09] learning to play the piano as a

[22:11] goal directed thing and

[22:12] learning to heal the world as a

[22:14] massive groups goal and as if

[22:15] we have hope that we can do

[22:18] that. Then, you begin to

[22:19] interact with each other and

[22:21] we're at it at first and then

[22:23] we get slightly better and

[22:25] better and there's an

[22:27] interesting thing and this is

[22:27] why I was thinking this is why

[22:28] I have hope and that is that

[22:31] the left side of the brain is

[22:32] really loud like if you sit

[22:34] down and meditate, it's like,

[22:36] oh no, everything's going

[22:36] wrong. It's okay. I'm in

[22:38] control. You know, like those

[22:40] characters but the right side

[22:42] characters are like, are like

[22:45] whatever They don't interfere.

[22:49] They're very quiet. They're

[22:51] happy but they're not

[22:53] interfering. So, you get, you

[22:55] get a brain, A world where

[22:58] everything's starting to

[22:59] develop the left side. the

[23:01] fear, the screaming, the the

[23:04] controlling, all of that. It's

[23:05] going to be very, very loud.

[23:06] Yeah. You don't even realize

[23:09] that there's this massive power

[23:12] going on simultaneously. That

[23:13] is quiet. It's right. So, We're

[23:17] talking about like when you're

[23:19] sending me an energetic over

[23:20] the phone to my foot, you're

[23:23] broadcasting that from your

[23:23] whole brain but the choices are

[23:26] being made from the god part

[23:27] and the pigpen part because

[23:30] they're the creative and

[23:32] energetic masters. Yeah. Yeah.

[23:35] It's a, well, they're they're

[23:36] the ones that exist beyond the

[23:39] boundaries of of me where I

[23:40] begin and where I am and if I

[23:42] think I begin and end here,

[23:43] then that's all I can do,

[23:44] Right. And if I know I can. I

[23:48] can influence if I've if I know

[23:50] that I can look at a tree and I

[23:52] can watch the tree limb move

[23:56] and I can feel and experience

[23:58] myself as the energy that is

[24:01] lifting and causing that limb

[24:03] to move. then, I have II have

[24:06] simply consciously shifted my

[24:08] focus of what I am away from my

[24:11] left brain. It's me, Small me

[24:14] limited to me boundless and

[24:17] open a possibility. So and and

[24:20] it is true. I mean, if I wipe

[24:22] out a small group of cells in

[24:23] my left hemisphere, then I

[24:25] don't know where I begin and

[24:26] where I end anymore. I mean, I

[24:28] mean, that's that's part of

[24:30] this beautiful brain and how

[24:32] it's like knowing time we we

[24:34] can know what time it is

[24:36] because we have a group of

[24:37] cells that tracks time so we

[24:39] can tell our brain to wake up

[24:41] at three in the morning because

[24:42] gotta catch an airplane at five

[24:43] and you know, we gotta get

[24:44] there. blah blah and can do

[24:47] that because there's a group of

[24:48] cells wipe out those cells. We

[24:49] can't do that anymore. Wipe out

[24:51] out that cells defines the

[24:53] boundaries of where I begin and

[24:55] end and the energy of my foot

[24:56] becomes the energy of

[24:57] everyone's foot. Yeah. And it's

[24:59] real. I mean, that's the thing

[25:01] is that people can say all

[25:02] things are one fine but Jill

[25:05] actually was in the part of her

[25:07] brain that perceives and

[25:08] experiences the truth that we

[25:11] are all wave energy interacting

[25:13] with other way. Yeah. for 8

[25:15] years. Yeah. So, it wasn't,

[25:17] it's not, she's not just

[25:18] spouting some kind of religious

[25:20] doctrine. She's lived this as a

[25:23] perceiving reality and we can't

[25:25] if we're willing to go there.

[25:28] Yeah, I wanted to tell a story

[25:29] because everything's a metaphor

[25:31] for this, right? Yeah. And we

[25:32] were talking and I call it the

[25:33] story of the demon houseboat

[25:37] and this happened last week and

[25:41] uh we were talking on the phone

[25:41] and Jill's on her boat by the

[25:42] way. I've had people say, well,

[25:44] I'd have to sell my house to

[25:45] live on a boat and I'm like,

[25:47] alright, do it like that's a

[25:48] choice too, right? Yeah. It's a

[25:50] choice. So, we've talked about

[25:53] Jill lives in this incredible

[25:54] like divine like Garden of Eden

[25:58] Place but there are these house

[26:00] boats that sleep about twelve

[26:01] people and they come with a lot

[26:02] of alcohol and very loud. um

[26:07] music. Now, we know that's none

[26:09] of your listeners. Well,

[26:11] probably not. If it's yeah, you

[26:13] guys are going to be sorely

[26:14] disappointed if you're looking

[26:15] for that for me. So, and for

[26:17] me, it's like weed whacker.

[26:19] They're like they are my

[26:21] definition of hell in the

[26:21] forest Well, She's like so this

[26:26] this boat came. Tell me where

[26:28] I'm wrong here. on this entire

[26:31] massive light. Comes right up

[26:33] to Jill's boat and start

[26:36] thumping this loud music and

[26:37] people are like screaming and

[26:39] laughing and drunk and then,

[26:40] you know, so tell them what you

[26:42] did Jill and then think think

[26:45] about this is loud left

[26:47] hemisphere. Everybody's like,

[26:49] yeah. so this, you know, it's

[26:50] interesting to me. I live out

[26:52] here with god because I spend a

[26:53] lot of time in my character for

[26:54] it. I'm very peaceful and I'm

[26:56] very happy here and my friends

[26:57] are, you know, the the heron

[27:01] and the turtles and the fish

[27:02] and you know the creatures.

[27:04] they're my friends and friends

[27:05] come and visit and that's great

[27:07] and um but this is where I

[27:10] live. It's a sacred, quiet,

[27:12] beautiful place and I'm

[27:14] listening. You can probably

[27:15] hear it. The cicadas in the

[27:17] background. the the bullfrogs

[27:18] singing their song. You know,

[27:20] I'm here because it's so

[27:22] beautiful and I want to live in

[27:23] the presence of god and be

[27:26] energetically influenced by

[27:26] that. Yeah. Because like the

[27:28] way it it feels inside of my

[27:30] body. Of course, that's what I

[27:31] would want to do. So, then,

[27:33] these boats come in and they're

[27:35] I'm doing this blaring this

[27:38] noisy music that doesn't even

[27:39] have a rhythm. I mean, I don't

[27:41] even understand music that

[27:42] doesn't, it's not weirdly

[27:44] syndicated, right? And so,

[27:45] they're parked literally 100

[27:47] feet from my boat and this is a

[27:49] big honking lake. I mean, it is

[27:52] like huge but they've chosen to

[27:54] do that and I thought, well, if

[27:55] their music bothers me, way. If

[27:59] it just rubs my core of my

[28:02] being into, you know, anxiety

[28:04] and hostility, then, I'll bet

[28:08] my music would do the same for

[28:08] them. So, what I did was I have

[28:10] a very large sounding ball to a

[28:13] toning ball and so I took it

[28:15] out a really big sounding bowl.

[28:18] so, I took it out and I put it

[28:20] on the the the on the table out

[28:22] back and I just are you so You

[28:28] know, we have some very

[28:30] Buddhist and then

[28:35] and I'm toning with it, you

[28:37] know, with my voice. Well, it

[28:39] took about 20 minutes before

[28:41] things started getting kind of,

[28:43] you know, but and I started to

[28:44] get tired then, I thought, you

[28:46] know, it's not me against them

[28:48] because they just kept it up.

[28:49] So, it's like, so just meld

[28:52] into my own tone. Just be that

[28:56] and and then you can, you know,

[28:57] my arm wasn't tired anymore and

[29:00] I could just do it and so after

[29:02] an hour of just blaring this

[29:05] tone into the cove, the next

[29:06] thing I as they're gone and it

[29:10] was I love that. I mean, they

[29:14] were as uncomfortable in the

[29:16] single tone of this. So,

[29:20] resonating pattern as I was in

[29:23] their sync or or whatever and

[29:26] and it was it was a really, you

[29:28] know, it was a good moment for

[29:31] me because um I want to be

[29:33] peaceful out here and I don't

[29:35] mind sharing this beautiful

[29:36] cove with peaceful people. um

[29:38] and It was like I don't want to

[29:41] feel irritation. I don't want

[29:43] to feel anxiety. I don't want

[29:44] to feel hostility. Yeah. I

[29:46] don't want to stimulate my

[29:47] character too and and I want to

[29:49] figure out well as as shown

[29:52] talks about uh she is that

[29:55] moment of irritation that

[29:57] moment when something happens

[29:59] and I feel I'm irritated and

[30:01] it's like I don't want be in my

[30:05] irritation. So, even when it's

[30:07] it's so in to me of the sound.

[30:12] Um how do I bring myself back

[30:15] to my own sense of deep inner

[30:16] peace so that regardless of

[30:19] what's going on around me, I

[30:20] can still walk my walk in the

[30:24] grace of god and uh the

[30:27] sounding bowl was very helpful.

[30:28] So and that's a metaphor for

[30:30] what happened to me when I

[30:31] started meditating. It was

[30:33] panic attacks for 4 months and

[30:35] then it just went like the

[30:36] finally the rights of

[30:37] hemisphere got sort of it just

[30:40] kind of long this still came

[30:43] and embraced the the sound and

[30:45] the sound finally went quiet.

[30:47] Yeah. And if Jill can do that

[30:49] with a sounding bull in a cove

[30:51] and we can do that in our own

[30:53] brains, We do it for the whole

[30:55] damn world. That's what that's

[30:56] what I have. The hope that if

[30:58] we just sit and resonate with

[31:01] our own character for us and if

[31:02] we live in brain huddle where

[31:04] there we're primarily focused

[31:06] on peace and and passion. It

[31:10] eventually the other side

[31:12] eventually gets tired. Yeah.

[31:14] Well, it's it's spinning. It's

[31:16] like uh like a tornado. You

[31:18] know, it's energy and it's

[31:19] energy is accelerated and it's

[31:22] fast and it's loud and it's

[31:23] noisy and it's drunk and it's

[31:25] stoned and it's all these

[31:26] things because it doesn't it

[31:28] wants to mask its own pain.

[31:30] Yeah. And uh uh you know, uh a

[31:33] wonderful friend of mine. I

[31:34] don't know if this line is from

[31:36] AA uh or not but she she uses

[31:40] this phrase and it's so

[31:41] powerful for me is that give

[31:44] people the dignity of their own

[31:46] pain. Give people the dignity

[31:48] of their own pain but I don't

[31:51] have to feel their pain. Right.

[31:52] Right. And I don't have to fix

[31:54] their pain and if I'm going to

[31:56] stand in the presence of their

[31:59] pain, I don't have to mirror a

[32:00] neuron, reflect their pain. I

[32:03] can stay in my own space of

[32:04] peace and allow them to feel

[32:06] that pain because it is through

[32:08] that pain. We've all felt pain.

[32:10] We've all had trauma. We've all

[32:12] had moments where it's I don't

[32:15] want to feel it or I'm going to

[32:16] grow If I do feel it, I have to

[32:18] grow because I gotta get

[32:20] through it and then I realize,

[32:21] well, it's not me. It's a part

[32:24] of me. It's a piece of who I am

[32:26] that I don't have to dwell in

[32:28] and hook into and so as I look

[32:31] at HOPE, especially in the

[32:33] world in the condition that it

[32:34] is right now. I mean, all you

[32:36] have to do is say Afghanistan

[32:38] and everybody's souls just sink

[32:40] and it's like, okay, so let's

[32:43] us on the, you know, it's kind

[32:45] of like cancer. If you've got

[32:48] cancerous cells in your body

[32:49] and you focus on the cancer and

[32:51] all the energy goes to the

[32:52] disease, the disease, then the

[32:55] disease

[32:58] what we're doing. So, the goal

[33:00] is to fuel the energy of all

[33:02] the healthy cells so that the

[33:05] healthy cells can bring

[33:06] wellness to those cells that

[33:09] have gone haywire and I think

[33:11] think that the true so at a

[33:12] cellular level that then again

[33:14] becomes the microcosm and then

[33:16] the microcosm is as a societal

[33:19] if we focus on the love and we

[33:23] focus on the goodness, we know

[33:25] that love healing. We know that

[33:28] that energetic uh there are

[33:31] practices like Reiki where we

[33:33] can share energy is a real

[33:36] thing and I'm like a bomb for

[33:38] energy, right? So, and then I

[33:39] got this conscious mind that

[33:41] can focus it with

[33:42] consciousness. Oh my gosh, we

[33:44] are so powerful. beyond our

[33:46] wildest imaginations. Yeah. And

[33:48] I think then focusing on the

[33:50] love and focusing on our own

[33:52] love and focusing on the beauty

[33:54] and focusing on you know, need

[33:56] to come up with tools where we

[33:59] can really visualize the

[34:00] massive of our goodness because

[34:03] we're we're focusing on all

[34:06] this horrible news. Horrible

[34:08] news, horrible news, horrible

[34:09] horrible news, and the pandemic

[34:11] and the energetic that that

[34:13] that virus is resonating and

[34:16] thriving in and that's not our

[34:18] vibration. Yeah. So, you know,

[34:20] if we can raise ourselves into

[34:22] thinking and being love and

[34:24] really embodying and and

[34:27] responsibility for what am I is

[34:28] this massive collection of

[34:31] focus, conscious energy. Oh my

[34:33] gosh and we put that with yours

[34:36] and we put that with hundreds

[34:37] of thousands and millions of

[34:38] other people's positive energy

[34:41] Things are going to change.

[34:42] Yeah. Yeah. Oh, Oh, I love

[34:44] that. going to what? I'm going

[34:45] to put it on my wall. Focus on

[34:48] the massive of our goodness.

[34:50] What a cool way to respond.

[34:52] Yeah. Questions all through

[34:53] this and I just want we can't

[34:54] answer of them but I'm going to

[34:57] read out some of them. Well,

[34:59] this will be fun. Oh yeah.

[35:00] Okay. Okay, Pam. Let's do it.

[35:03] Linda asks, how do think it

[35:04] would have been? I've asked you

[35:05] this too. This is fascinating.

[35:07] If your deficits have been on

[35:08] the right brain, completely

[35:11] different. I would have lost my

[35:13] connection to the

[35:15] expansiveness. I would have uh

[35:17] focused on detail, detail,

[35:19] detail, detail. I would have

[35:20] hooked into my pain. I'd take

[35:22] things personally. Um my

[35:24] character one and two would

[35:25] just be unbalanced. Um I've had

[35:28] so People come to me and say,

[35:31] my stroke was was exactly the

[35:33] opposite of yours and I can't

[35:36] find god. Wow. So many people

[35:38] have used those words I cannot

[35:40] find god anymore. I can pray. I

[35:43] can't feel it. I can't sense

[35:45] myself expand. I can't go into

[35:47] the bigger picture Instead. I

[35:49] feel very irritable but I'm

[35:51] constantly criticizing my my

[35:53] caregivers. I I've actually

[35:55] become kind of mean. I mean,

[35:57] people are aware because it's

[35:58] like Well, you're wearing the

[36:00] wrong color. Well, you know,

[36:02] Marty, you're you're, you think

[36:04] something's not right? You

[36:05] know, this is what's wrong. You

[36:06] know, the focus all becomes on

[36:07] on what's wrong instead of the

[36:09] right brain looking for

[36:11] similarities and and

[36:13] interconnection and what's

[36:14] right. So, it would have been a

[36:16] completely opposite experience

[36:17] and there's so many stroke

[36:20] survivors who have had the

[36:21] exact opposite. Although I

[36:23] don't. don't you say in your

[36:24] first book, my stroke of

[36:25] insight, you comment that there

[36:26] are far more left hemisphere

[36:27] strokes in the our than there

[36:30] are, right Hemisphere. Well,

[36:31] there are many. Yes, there are

[36:32] many more reported. Okay.

[36:36] reported and and think about

[36:36] it. Part of it is if I've wiped

[36:39] out my left brain which is

[36:40] where my language is. Yeah. I

[36:42] can't hide that very well.

[36:43] Yeah, Right. Yeah. But if I've

[36:44] lost things in my right brain

[36:46] which are subtle, more

[36:49] innuendo, intuitive types of

[36:51] things, then I can mask that. I

[36:54] might not feel normal inside

[36:56] but if I want to hide it from

[36:57] you, I probably can do that a

[37:00] lot easier. Boy, that goes

[37:01] right to the integrity thing

[37:03] about not hiding. What's going

[37:04] on. Wow. Okay, Sherry asks. Um

[37:08] so, I'm hearing that you say

[37:10] hope equals intention. No,

[37:15] because intention is a

[37:19] direction Hope is impulse. So,

[37:25] so uh and you have to have the

[37:28] impulse to move before you

[37:28] know, You're going. Uh huh. Do

[37:32] you know what I mean? Yeah, I

[37:33] do To me. Hope. Hope can be can

[37:36] end up being an intention.

[37:39] Right. Right. But but hope to

[37:41] me is is the impetus toward

[37:44] something new. Yeah. So, you

[37:46] know, and then and then and

[37:48] then it may be a positive

[37:50] intention or it it may be I'm

[37:52] I'm feeling sadness but it's

[37:54] it's it's the impetus to run a

[37:56] circuit and that circuit

[37:58] intention is a group cells.

[38:01] Intention is not everywhere in

[38:02] the brain. Intention is is a

[38:04] group of cells in the right

[38:05] hemisphere. So, if you don't

[38:07] have a lot of people don't have

[38:09] any real intention and that's

[38:10] because they're not running

[38:12] that right brain circuitry of

[38:14] of what they're just like

[38:15] flopping around like fish in

[38:17] the sea, right? They don't

[38:18] know. it's they're don't know.

[38:20] they're heading somewhere or

[38:21] perfectly heading somewhere.

[38:23] That's a lot of us are just

[38:25] running in random. Right? And

[38:27] that's the brain. It's just

[38:28] going somewhere Yeah. When you

[38:31] somewhere. they when people

[38:33] come to me, they typically say,

[38:33] I don't know where I'm going

[38:34] and that's where I start my

[38:36] book. I don't know where I'm

[38:37] going. I don't know why I'm

[38:37] here. I didn't realize what

[38:39] about intention living on the

[38:41] right side of the brain. That's

[38:42] right. Yes. Yeah, yeah. yeah.

[38:45] Okay. So, Elise says question,

[38:47] love this and love y'all. I try

[38:49] not to think of scarcity or

[38:51] fearful mindset and my

[38:53] strategies may work for a brief

[38:54] time but my stubborn brain

[38:57] defaults quickly to how it's

[38:58] been for 50 years and mind

[39:01] strategies to shift my brain

[39:03] patterns. Um and efficiently as

[39:08] that it lasts longer. Hold up

[39:11] that book. Yeah, it's all here

[39:13] you guys. It's all there. Yeah.

[39:16] it is. Exactly. That is exactly

[39:18] what this is about. How do I

[39:20] get out of my character too?

[39:22] And I have these other

[39:23] characters about my if my

[39:25] default is my my pain and and

[39:28] my fear of the unknown and all

[39:31] of that, then that's a

[39:32] character. that's a group of

[39:33] cells inside of the brain and

[39:35] by knowing the other

[39:37] characters, then you can

[39:38] strengthen them by choosing to

[39:40] embody them more. often and

[39:42] then you can start looking at

[39:44] the relationships between these

[39:46] different characters with your

[39:48] own character too and how are

[39:50] they, how can they they become

[39:52] healthier and more supportive

[39:54] inside your own brain. Cool.

[39:56] Yeah, That's exactly what that

[39:57] book is about. Yeah. And it's

[39:59] so clear, so simple. So, it's

[40:01] easy and and you know and also

[40:04] I also studied Asians,

[40:07] societies and philosophies and

[40:08] they they will say any Asian

[40:09] master will tell you what Jill

[40:12] does in one word which is

[40:13] attention. Put your attention

[40:16] to this collective calming and

[40:19] just keep if your attention

[40:20] keeps getting pulled to the

[40:22] fearful, you know, character to

[40:25] move your attention, move your

[40:25] attention, focus. What are you

[40:27] focused on Because the

[40:29] attention it kind of like the

[40:31] in intention but there's a

[40:34] little bit different at the

[40:35] level of the brain but the the

[40:39] attention is the focus. What am

[40:40] I going to focus on? Well, if I

[40:41] focus on the news that that is

[40:43] negative and bad, I'm going to

[40:45] feel horrible. Yeah. because

[40:45] that's the that's going to

[40:48] stimulate that part of my brain

[40:49] that resonates with with my

[40:52] fear because that's what it is.

[40:54] That's what it's doing. It's

[40:56] doing that but if I can look at

[40:58] that and say, okay, um uh you

[41:02] know, I can focus on on uh

[41:05] other things like a podcast

[41:06] like this that is is

[41:07] specifically designed to figure

[41:10] out, well, how do I use other

[41:12] parts of me that do bring me

[41:13] hope? How do I find hope? What

[41:15] is hope and I've been thinking

[41:18] so much about it. The level of

[41:19] the brain. What is hope and

[41:22] hope in order to have hope, I

[41:25] can't just be, I have to I have

[41:28] to. There's there's something

[41:31] beyond and intention is me

[41:34] choosing which of the beyond

[41:36] path I will take out and pursue

[41:40] but the hope is the impetus of

[41:44] action and and so if you've got

[41:46] a neuron that that is kind of

[41:48] not communicating with other

[41:49] neurons, it's not in the link

[41:50] like when I had stroke And did

[41:54] I have any hope without any

[41:56] hope. What? First of all, you

[41:58] have to ask yourself hope or

[42:00] what but hope, Hope became uh

[42:04] AAA willingness to try whatever

[42:08] it is. Uh I'm either willing to

[42:11] try for anything or I'm not.

[42:14] So, try for change a change of

[42:16] this is what I currently am.

[42:18] So, Hope to me is the impetus

[42:21] toward making that leap toward

[42:22] the tri and once I have the

[42:26] try, then I can try with an

[42:27] intention toward a specific

[42:30] goal. I love that and I love

[42:32] the fact that it's all brain

[42:34] science. So, Anne says what

[42:37] character in our brain is best

[42:38] at establishing boundaries,

[42:41] healthy boundaries. Yeah. Well,

[42:45] um character one's going to

[42:46] come in and say um this is what

[42:48] I want. This is what I what I

[42:50] this is this is here's right

[42:52] and wrong and good and bad.

[42:53] Okay. character. one's going to

[42:55] come in and and set uh the

[42:59] boundaries. Character two is

[43:00] going to say um uh anything

[43:05] outside of that boundary brings

[43:06] me pain. It scares me. Alright,

[43:08] I'm limited. Uh I'm

[43:10] constricted. I'm small. I'm

[43:12] when I'm smaller, the

[43:13] boundaries are uh the more

[43:14] rigid I am. the the safer I

[43:16] feel in my little box. Mm hmm.

[43:19] Uh character four comes in and

[43:21] says um uh that doesn't work

[43:23] for me that doesn't resonate

[43:26] with my integrity. doesn't feel

[43:28] right. It doesn't feel good. It

[43:30] doesn't work for me. So, you

[43:31] can go and you can do that and

[43:33] you can be that but here's my

[43:35] healthy boundary and character

[43:37] three is going to say um uh but

[43:40] I still like you. Can we still

[43:42] play at least we'll do it

[43:44] together. I want us to get

[43:46] along. It's important to me to

[43:48] get along. I want to resonate

[43:49] with you in a positive way. So,

[43:51] I think boundaries uh that's

[43:53] how the four characters would

[43:54] interact with boundaries. I

[43:56] like that. That's a good

[43:56] question. There's always a

[44:00] huddle solution. It's so great.

[44:00] Yeah. Uh and also says, I teach

[44:04] children with severely

[44:06] traumatized characters. Yes.

[44:08] You can see that they're stuck

[44:09] there. What's the best way to

[44:10] help them love them with their

[44:12] character for so children need

[44:15] to know that they're loved. Um

[44:20] character four is love and my

[44:22] character for because um I can

[44:26] look and recognize my own

[44:27] character for I can know part

[44:30] of me II can learn. I can know

[44:33] uh what it feels like to be

[44:36] connected to to love, to god,

[44:39] to nature, to wear it. When I

[44:41] do feel safe. train children to

[44:45] recognize when do they feel

[44:47] safe Um and that that's uh an

[44:50] inside place. that's not just

[44:52] an outside place. Now, there

[44:53] might be safe houses, safe

[44:55] people safe. um uh relatives

[44:58] and unsafe people We all know

[45:01] that um and to really try to

[45:05] figure out that that safety.

[45:07] How do we identify with that

[45:08] safety? Because ultimately, uh

[45:11] we want children to know and so

[45:12] I'm I'm working on a children's

[45:14] book of of these four

[45:16] characters so kids can learn

[45:17] and get to know their own four

[45:19] characters so that they know

[45:21] what character for is inside of

[45:23] me. character for you know, I

[45:24] can be in the hell of someone

[45:26] else driving, beating loud

[45:28] volume music and even if I

[45:32] didn't have a sounding bowl in

[45:33] my own head, I could run that

[45:36] tone and I can be at peace or I

[45:38] can go swimming and get in

[45:40] underwater and get away from

[45:41] the noise but ultimately, it's

[45:44] about me managing me. How do I

[45:46] manage me and teaching children

[45:48] that they have that power?

[45:51] Yeah, they have that power.

[45:53] They have that power to choose

[45:55] those four different characters

[45:56] and to identify them inside of

[45:58] themselves So they find that

[46:01] power and it might be, you

[46:02] know, I want to go hide in the

[46:04] closet because the closet's the

[46:06] safe place for me and I can

[46:07] feel and maybe I take my

[46:10] imaginary friend or maybe I

[46:11] take my teddy or or maybe I

[46:14] take my little whatever I love

[46:16] the phrase safety is an inside

[46:19] place. I mean, if we could all

[46:22] children, adults, everyone,

[46:23] people who are 100 years old

[46:25] and dying. we all need Exactly.

[46:27] Right. Safety is an inside

[46:30] place. It can't be taken away

[46:31] from you. right now. That

[46:35] doesn't mean that physically,

[46:37] I'm not capable of of

[46:39] experiencing trauma and I may

[46:42] not always be able to get

[46:43] myself out of trauma. I mean,

[46:44] when I had that stroke, god it

[46:46] was trauma. I couldn't walk,

[46:47] talk, read, right? We call it

[46:48] any of my life. I mean II was

[46:50] an infant in a woman's body. I

[46:52] was captive. Wow. Um and I fell

[46:55] off the Harvard ladder and all

[46:56] the character. One things that

[46:58] she cares about and and you

[47:00] know uh II mean. I just that

[47:02] was trauma but how did I

[47:05] manifest in the presence of

[47:07] that trauma was I'm okay. I'm

[47:11] okay If I live, I'm okay if I

[47:15] I'm okay if I'm experiencing

[47:17] trauma and pain, I'm okay. This

[47:20] may be happening to me.

[47:24] physiologically, emotionally,

[47:27] spiritually. I may be violated

[47:29] but I Okay. The essence of me

[47:35] cannot be taken or touched or

[47:39] invaded the essence of me is

[47:42] mine and I think that it was um

[47:45] um uh one of the great leaders.

[47:48] I think it was Gandhi who was

[47:51] being beaten in the street and

[47:53] he said, you know III cannot

[47:56] with you cannot hurt me without

[47:57] my permission. Yeah. no,

[48:00] without without my permission

[48:01] and it's a understanding of

[48:04] self. I as a right brain II

[48:08] have this life, these cells but

[48:10] I am beyond. I am this

[48:14] consciousness. I am this energy

[48:15] form and I exist not in this

[48:18] way as this person with these

[48:20] likes and dislikes and right

[48:22] and wrongs and good and bad of

[48:24] me. Defined as Joe Bolte Taylor

[48:26] and everything of her life.

[48:26] Blah blah blah. In the external

[48:28] world. But the energetic of

[48:30] what I am. That's the magic of

[48:33] life. That's the difference

[48:34] between me and me and being a

[48:36] robot. Yeah. Because I have a

[48:38] and when the form is gone, when

[48:41] this form is removed, that

[48:43] doesn't mean that the energetic

[48:45] consciousness energy has to go

[48:47] somewhere. Energy, transmits

[48:50] itself and from one form into

[48:52] another form, it doesn't

[48:54] disappear. So, even though I

[48:55] will become an organic, massive

[48:58] waste at some point, in the

[49:01] meantime, I have life and then

[49:04] when so so so safety is an it's

[49:07] an eternal place. It's an

[49:10] internal concept. So, you may

[49:11] have already answered this but

[49:12] and that says, I just want to

[49:14] get specific can trauma and

[49:16] PTSD create the same issues

[49:17] that you just talked about. If

[49:18] you have a right brain stroke,

[49:20] the inability to find or

[49:22] connect with god. So,

[49:23] somebody's now traumatized. and

[49:26] right now, you need to help but

[49:26] they can't find it. How would

[49:29] you perceive then if you can't

[49:30] connect? Alright, well, I think

[49:33] that that it's similar but

[49:34] different if you have the right

[49:35] brain stroke, it's that

[49:38] cellular structure is not even

[49:41] available but if I'm

[49:41] experiencing trauma in the left

[49:43] brain, if I'm experiencing

[49:45] trauma, trauma in my life and I

[49:48] move into my fear and my

[49:50] scarcity and my constriction

[49:52] and my my pain and and I can't

[49:55] escape that whether I'm in it

[49:58] or whether I'm no longer in it

[50:00] but I can go back to it like

[50:01] that because I'm wired for

[50:03] that. Now, it's in my

[50:05] circuitry. I still have

[50:06] capacity as a normal human

[50:09] being. even experiencing trauma

[50:11] to find that place of that

[50:14] character for outside of

[50:17] myself, it's still surrogate

[50:18] and I can train myself to to

[50:21] focus on other things to loosen

[50:25] the density of that character

[50:26] to pain and open it up into new

[50:30] possibility and recovery is

[50:33] real. I mean, I'm a living

[50:33] example that neuroplasticity,

[50:35] we can New septic connections

[50:39] at a rate of 1.8. 1.8000000.

[50:41] New connections per second. I

[50:44] mean, blowing .8000000 per

[50:47] second. How many new septic

[50:48] connections we could've

[50:49] completely rewired our brains

[50:51] in the last moments of this uh

[50:53] podcast. Oh my god, that's so

[50:56] phenomenal. I remember reading

[50:57] that number in your book and it

[50:59] just was like we're so we we we

[51:02] are not using these machines to

[51:04] their capacity or no, we are so

[51:05] much more powerful than we've

[51:07] ever been given credit or been

[51:09] taught. Yeah. And now you're

[51:11] teaching us. Thank god. So,

[51:12] Ruby says, I've experienced

[51:14] emotional memories that seem to

[51:16] be held in the soft tissue of

[51:18] my body. Do you think all

[51:20] memories and emotions are

[51:21] stored completely in the brain?

[51:25] I think that

[51:29] I think that this is a tough

[51:32] one for me because I know

[51:34] everybody's about muscle

[51:35] memory. So, I'm going to say

[51:38] this about that. we are 50

[51:41] trillion, beautiful molecular

[51:42] geniuses, strong. We have this

[51:44] incredible network of neurons

[51:48] who are specifically designed

[51:50] to communicate like uh a

[51:53] computer if you will as a

[51:54] mother board to organize and

[51:56] create and it's alive and it's

[51:58] well and it's intricately

[52:00] connected to everything but All

[52:03] my cells are alive. and all of

[52:06] my cells pretty much except for

[52:08] my um uh some of the cells

[52:11] floating around in the

[52:12] bloodstream are directly

[52:14] influenced by these neurons. Mm

[52:17] hmm. And so, I end up with

[52:19] patterned responses of energy.

[52:21] So, my ability to do this when

[52:23] I had my my paralysis of my

[52:26] right arm, I couldn't wiggle my

[52:29] finger because the neurons here

[52:30] were were busted and the

[52:34] pattern here then got atrophy

[52:37] and tired and and you know what

[52:39] could they, could I get that

[52:41] reconnection to happen again?

[52:43] Well, eventually and then I was

[52:45] a guitar player. So, could I

[52:46] wiggle my fingers and and do it

[52:49] together and and make you know,

[52:51] sound and music and all that.

[52:53] So um but everything's a

[52:56] pattern of energy. Yeah. So, is

[52:58] there a memory in other places

[52:59] Not like we think you know, I

[53:01] would not like. we think they

[53:03] can't think like we think but

[53:05] do they have energetic patterns

[53:07] that can get disturbed? Well,

[53:09] let's say uh you know, the

[53:11] other day I fell and um I went

[53:13] down about two stamps and I

[53:15] twisted my ankle and so my

[53:17] ankle went bam and uh a whole

[53:21] lot of pain came online and I

[53:22] thought to myself, well, you

[53:24] know, that was bad and so I

[53:25] laid there a while and I

[53:28] thought, okay um now there's a

[53:32] right. I have stretched

[53:34] ligaments and tendons and

[53:36] things in a way that they don't

[53:37] want to be stretched. Uh it

[53:39] hurts like the devil and it

[53:41] hurts because there's tissue

[53:42] damage and when cells break, uh

[53:45] they they give little signs out

[53:48] to Es and other blood cells

[53:49] that say, hey, alarm alert or

[53:51] bringing the fire engines. We

[53:53] got a problem down here

[53:54] bringing in the Emts, right? We

[53:57] gotta have some attention and

[53:58] so the immune system starts

[54:01] flooding down to that and

[54:02] that's why we swell. um and

[54:06] energetically, I didn't want to

[54:08] have congestion there. as just

[54:12] as just uh you know, because

[54:13] that would make it even more

[54:15] dense. Right now, I won't all

[54:16] the immune cells to go there

[54:17] but I didn't want it to get

[54:20] clogged up with swelling. So,

[54:21] instead of putting my energy

[54:24] into it, I pulled my energy out

[54:27] and threw it so that the energy

[54:30] has me big as the universe, the

[54:32] energetic I'm fueling into it

[54:35] is the energy pattern of what

[54:37] is healthy and normal as

[54:40] opposed to just the congestion

[54:40] and let's get dense. Let's get

[54:42] this. Let's get that and

[54:44] whatever. So, all of that is to

[54:46] say um everything has pattern

[54:49] responses and and we can

[54:53] congestive get in the way of

[54:54] those pattern responses and

[54:56] create illness and when we have

[54:58] a wound like Now, all of a

[55:01] sudden, that's going to

[55:02] interfere with the natural

[55:03] energy flow pattern of what my

[55:05] ankle usually does and I want

[55:08] my my ankle to go back to its

[55:10] normal energetic patterns

[55:12] before as soon as possible,

[55:15] right? But the more it swells,

[55:16] the longer it'll take blah blah

[55:18] blah, the longer it takes to

[55:19] heal blah blah blah. Um so, do

[55:23] if you know and and that's all

[55:25] I'm going to going to say about

[55:26] that but that's very cool. So,

[55:29] back to the just to to finish

[55:31] up here. Um first, I want to

[55:33] say that Jill is doing a free

[55:35] online event on August 24th

[55:38] through twenty-sixth. So,

[55:39] that's right up this week and

[55:41] it's called Balance Your Brain

[55:43] Tools to overcome anxiety and

[55:46] fear which I know we have a lot

[55:47] of anxiety and fear folk. We're

[55:49] like the anxiety team here in

[55:51] the gathering room. So, I

[55:52] wanted to say that first but

[55:53] just to to take our attention

[55:56] off here and back to HOPE.

[55:57] Yeah, it's exactly I Jill took

[55:59] her attention away from her

[56:01] foot and she did the same thing

[56:02] with my injured foot when she

[56:04] pushed energy into it and then

[56:06] said that's a little congested

[56:07] and then pulled the energy

[56:08] back. This helps. stuff is

[56:10] real. She used it to heal her

[56:12] own foot. She used it to heal

[56:14] mine. It was amazing but think

[56:16] about the implication if all of

[56:18] us are in fact fractals of

[56:20] these miraculous cells and

[56:22] we're all networked. So, let's

[56:25] like in the in the coming weeks

[56:27] practice Bringing in the huddle

[56:30] and if you find anxiety, first

[56:34] of all, pay attention off

[56:35] what's making you anxious. Put

[56:37] attention on what gives you

[56:38] hope. Anything that gives you,

[56:40] there are lots of things. Go

[56:42] online. Yeah, animals are

[56:43] befriending each other. We

[56:44] never even knew Now, the

[56:45] internet, you know, there's a

[56:47] deer and a puppy playing

[56:48] together. Go look at it. So,

[56:51] you pull your attention off the

[56:53] wounding. We have all where

[56:54] it's focused. Put it on

[56:57] something beautiful. Yeah. See

[56:58] if you can find your way back

[57:01] into character four. I had to

[57:02] do that with my own life. I had

[57:04] my own childhood trauma and

[57:06] during that trauma, I've never

[57:07] told anyone this publicly uh

[57:09] when I was 5 years old and I

[57:10] was being um raped. Um I had

[57:16] the experience of seeing a

[57:17] light which I again sign

[57:18] surgery when I was twenty-nine.

[57:19] I did not remember seeing the

[57:22] light until I had the second

[57:24] experience but what it told me

[57:26] was if you had not been shown

[57:29] this light, you would have been

[57:31] overwhelmed by the trauma and

[57:32] you would have no longer been

[57:34] capable of making the choice.

[57:35] the universe or your brain or

[57:38] whatever it was the experience

[57:39] of the light during the

[57:41] experience of intense trauma.

[57:43] Wow. It's amazing. not to save

[57:46] you but so you would have

[57:48] freedom to choose to talk about

[57:50] the light and the darkness.

[57:51] Wow. Because that's what you're

[57:53] here to do and we're all here

[57:55] to do that. There is massive

[57:59] trauma being inflicted every

[57:59] like Afghanistan. It's uh.

[58:02] yeah. but there's also a light

[58:05] shining and also the ability to

[58:07] find our way to the left

[58:09] hemisphere and to become, you

[58:11] know, the brain huddle that

[58:12] brings together the aspects of

[58:16] humanity and the access to god

[58:18] and the ability to plan and the

[58:21] ability to be joyful and

[58:22] playful and and have fun doing

[58:25] it all. That's what amazes me

[58:27] so much about you. Jill is the

[58:29] last thing I want to say is you

[58:30] are so much fun like all those

[58:33] intellect and all this deep

[58:35] spirituality and you're like,

[58:36] just ruined the plumbing. I'm

[58:39] going to town for more supplies

[58:41] like you are not what people

[58:43] would expect. A spiritual

[58:45] master harbor, no anonymous to

[58:47] be and that's what I love about

[58:49] you and the things that heal

[58:51] the world may not be what we

[58:53] expect. Yeah. But we're very

[58:55] existence gives me a hope for

[58:57] us. Oh well, that's sweet. You

[58:59] know, and and so picture and I

[59:01] love thank you for sharing your

[59:03] story. Um also about the light

[59:04] and you know what what what it

[59:06] like to be when all I had was

[59:10] the right brain was you know,

[59:10] the movie Cocoon, the the

[59:14] energy beams, the beams of

[59:16] light. That's what we are and

[59:19] and then we put on this zipper

[59:21] suit that looks like us, you

[59:24] you know, and it's like, but

[59:26] don't forget that this is a

[59:27] zipper suit. Don't forget the

[59:30] energy beam that we are and to

[59:33] me, hope is is if I the impetus

[59:37] of energetic toward that verb,

[59:39] that action and then I can help

[59:42] direct my mind towards

[59:44] something positive like the

[59:46] light, you know, I am a being

[59:47] of light and that's why in your

[59:50] experience where you are shown

[59:51] the light and got to choose

[59:53] now, you have a choice. that's

[59:55] exactly the same thing. We have

[59:58] the choice to focus on

[1:00:00] something positive. Whatever we

[1:00:02] focus on, it grows, whatever we

[1:00:03] focus on, we find more it and

[1:00:06] we attract more of it into our

[1:00:08] lives. So, stop watching the

[1:00:10] news if you're, if you know, if

[1:00:12] that just is killing you uh

[1:00:14] because it's when we feel that

[1:00:15] helplessness, what can I do

[1:00:17] about Afghanistan is I can love

[1:00:20] send love into the universe and

[1:00:22] say I am I am I am hopeful that

[1:00:27] the power of the energy of what

[1:00:29] I am can connect with the power

[1:00:31] of the energy of what you are

[1:00:33] and as we build that work

[1:00:35] together consciously that

[1:00:38] energetic grows and the light

[1:00:41] grows stronger in the darkness

[1:00:44] becomes weaker and we know at a

[1:00:45] level of true physics and

[1:00:47] chemistry that that's reality.

[1:00:49] That is true at the micro level

[1:00:52] and since we all know about

[1:00:53] fractals, it's going to be at

[1:00:55] the exponential level as well.

[1:00:57] Fabulous. Okay, For more go to

[1:01:01] the free virtual event, August

[1:01:02] 24th to twenty-sixth. Balance

[1:01:03] your brain tools to overcome

[1:01:05] anxiety and and fear. It's

[1:01:07] free. It's fabulous. Why would

[1:01:09] you not go And um just thanking

[1:01:12] Doctor Taylor and all of you

[1:01:15] for coming Jill and pig Pen and

[1:01:18] all. What's your character for

[1:01:20] named Queen Toad. That's right.

[1:01:22] Queen Toad. So, thanks Queen

[1:01:24] Toad for coming for all of us.

[1:01:25] bringing all our parts. Thank

[1:01:27] you so much for being here at

[1:01:28] the Gathering Room and we'll

[1:01:30] see you on the interwebs. Mwah.

[1:01:32] Mwah. Mwah. Thank you. Marty.

[1:01:34] Thank you, Marty. Bye.

In the conversation with Martha Beck, Taylor says she recovered over roughly eight years, after a massive left-hemisphere stroke at 37, and attributes much of it to her belief in the brain's ability to rebuild. She says working with the brain's cells, rather than obstructing them with a story of defeat, mattered to the process. Beck describes the recovery as complete.
Taylor describes the limbic system, which processes present experience through emotion and carries emotional memory; the right hemisphere, which lives in the present moment; the left hemisphere, which processes details about the self, compares to the past and projects into the future; and the neocortex, the analytical thinking layer. In her framework, the right thinking tissue connects consciousness to something beyond the individual self.
Taylor says she believed in the brain's ability to recover and that she chose not to adopt a narrative of defeat, which she felt would have blocked her healing. She presents this as her own lived experience and a belief about how attention and story affect the cells, rather than as a proven clinical rule. The conversation treats hope as an active set of choices.
Martha Beck describes Whole Brain Living as a book that takes sophisticated brain anatomy and turns it into simple tools people can use to choose a joyful life. Its central device, discussed in this conversation, is the four-character model of the brain, which helps readers notice which emotional or thinking system is driving a given moment.
The episode description says Beck looks at how the same systems and processes that Taylor describes in one brain function at the macro level of groups of people and ecosystems. In the conversation she returns to connection, the larger picture and the possibility of peace on earth, though the focus of the hour stays closest to individual brain science and personal recovery.
The Gathering Room is a livestream format hosted by Martha Beck, in which she talks with guests about spiritual and personal growth topics. This special hour-long episode, originally aired August 22, 2021, features Taylor as a guest and focuses on hope.
