Descrição
As darkness falls over the River Dart, a different world awakens—one of wheeling wings and distant starlight. This September evening at Sharpham House invites you to step beyond the ordinary and into a profound encounter with nature's nocturnal magic. Whether you're drawn to the intricate lives of local wildlife or the vast mysteries of the cosmos, this guided stargazing and bat walk offers a rare opportunity to experience both in one unforgettable night.
Sharpham Estate, a sprawling 550-acre organic property in Totnes, Devon, is one of the few places in the South West where you can truly see the stars without the interference of streetlamp light. Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the banks of the River Dart, it's also a sanctuary for rare bat species, including the remarkable Greater Horseshoe Bat. This event brings together two expert guides—naturalists and astronomers—to help you discover the hidden wonders above and around you. Whether you're a curious beginner or a seasoned nature lover, you'll leave with a deeper sense of connection to the living world and the cosmos we inhabit.
This is more than a nature walk; it's an invitation to slow down, attune your senses, and rediscover wonder in the darkness.
What to Expect
Your evening begins as twilight deepens into night. Experienced naturalists will lead you through Sharpham's grounds with bat-detecting equipment, teaching you to recognize local species by their calls and flight patterns. You'll learn to listen and observe with fresh attention, uncovering the secret lives of creatures most of us never encounter.
As the sky darkens fully, your group will transition to guided stargazing. Telescopes and expert direction reveal the detail and beauty of celestial objects—planets, nebulae, star clusters—invisible to the naked eye. Knowledgeable astronomers will help you navigate the night sky and offer practical tips for observing from home.
Should clouds obscure the stars, the program gracefully shifts indoors for an astronomy introduction, ensuring you leave with valuable knowledge and inspiration regardless of weather.
