The Silent Awakening: Lyrics and Meaning Behind the Song

The video opens mid-thought. A voice that sounds unhurried and close to the microphone sings, "I dreamed I was born a girl living alone in the world," and the rest of the song unfolds from that single image: a person waking inside a dream that keeps insisting it is the whole of life. "The Silent Awakening," as Tina Malia performs it in this live recording from a Song of the Soul event in Berkeley, California, is a devotional song built on a simple, repeating premise. The world we take as solid is a dream of a dream, and something quieter than thought, a stillness the song calls the silent awakening, is what lets us see through it. Because the piece runs on repetition and long instrumental passages rather than verse-chorus structure, its meaning accumulates slowly. This article walks through the lyrics the way the song itself does, one returning image at a time, to show how the pieces connect.

What does "a dream of a dream" actually mean in this song?

The phrase arrives early and returns constantly. At about 0:26 the singer moves from the opening verse into the refrain: "that was only a dream of a dream, this world is not what it seems." The doubling is the key. A dream is ordinary enough; most of us know what it is to wake from one. A dream of a dream is harder to step out of, because it has the texture of waking life. The song is pointing at that second layer, the assumption that the ordinary world of appointments, grievances and ambitions is the bedrock rather than another story we are telling ourselves.

Notice how the refrain frames it. It does not say the world is unreal and stop there. It says "this world is not what it seems," which is a claim about perception rather than a dismissal of experience. The verses that come before it describe the human side of that misperception with unusual directness. "I looked into the face of sorrow, tempted by the taste of tomorrow and the scent of yesterday," the singer sings at the start of the song. Sorrow, anticipation and memory are the three ways a mind is pulled out of the present, and the lyric names all three in a single line. The dream is not a fantasy somewhere else. It is made of what we grieve, what we crave and what we keep replaying.

Why does the song keep returning to the wind, the seeds and the tree?

The central image of the chorus is a chain of living things. "We are the wind that carries the seeds, we are the roots of the Bodhi tree, we are love offered on the wing that stretches across eternity." The transcript captions render the tree line imperfectly, but the sung phrase points to the Bodhi tree, the tree under which awakening is traditionally said to have occurred, and the song builds its metaphor on that association.

Each line gives the listener a different role. The wind carries seeds, so the self is not the seed that stays put but the movement that disperses awareness into new ground. The roots of the Bodhi tree tie the song to a lineage of waking up, placing the listener not as an observer of awakening but as the rootstock it grows from. Then the image shifts from plant to flight: love "offered on the wing" that "stretches across eternity." Taken together the lines move from what is planted, to what is carried, to what is given. The chorus treats the self as something that spreads and offers itself, rather than something to be protected.

The chorus closes with a line that gives the piece its title and its quiet thesis: "we are the silent awakening." It is the only time in the song the word silent is attached to a noun that is also a verb. Awakening is not presented as a loud event, a revelation or a conversion. It is the condition the rest of the song has been describing. That reading matters for how the performance is shaped. The long instrumental stretches, which the transcript marks repeatedly as music, are not filler between lyrics. They are the place in the song where the words stop and the silence the title names becomes audible.

How does love function as the way through the illusion?

The bridge makes the argument explicit. "And only love can lift the veil, the veil, and only love can take its place," the singer sings at about 2:36. This is the hinge of the song. The veil is the dream made visible: the layer of perception that hides what is underneath. The lyric does not offer a technique for lifting it. It names one agent. Only love can do it, and it does so by taking the place of what the veil had been covering, rather than by tearing the veil away.

That distinction is worth sitting with. A veil that is pulled off by force can leave you exposed and disoriented. A veil that is replaced by something warmer changes the view without a shock. The song's language of offering, of love "offered on the wing," supports that reading. Love is given, moved and carried, not gripped. The bridge then turns personal in the next line: "I've traveled long and far just to come home to your grave." The journey home ends at a grave, which is an ending, a letting go of the self that made the journey. It is one of the more unsettling images in the song, and it is placed right where the lyric most needs to be concrete.

What is the Zion refrain, and why does it arrive so late?

About halfway through the recording the song changes texture. From roughly 7:00 onward, the lyric shifts into a call-and-response refrain built on the phrase "un to Zion we go," repeated with a steady, almost processional insistence. Before it arrives, the singer sings lines that frame it as a message: "For Jah is our salvation, here to teach all nations that when we choose to unite as one, I tell you truly your freedom will come." The transcript renders the opening word as "J," which the sung text makes clear is the name the lyric is invoking.

Structurally, the Zion section does something the first half of the song does not. The dream-of-a-dream verses are personal and interior. They describe a single person waking up. The Zion section is collective. It speaks of nations, of uniting as one, and of an open heart that receives "the healing of the almighty." The word Zion carries a long history in devotional and Rastafari-influenced music as a name for a promised place or state, and the recording uses it that way, as a destination for the collective the song has just described. The lyric also asks for specific things from the listener: "open up your hearts," and come with "clean hands and a heart so pure." These are instructions, and they arrive after the song has spent several minutes showing that the personal awakening is the precondition for them.

"Open up your hearts and receive the healing of the almighty, clean hands and a heart so pure." (sung in the Berkeley performance, approximately 7:17)

Placing the collective turn near the end is a deliberate sequencing. The song moves from the single dreamer, through the bridge where love does its work, to a community singing together toward a shared destination. By the time the refrain returns for the final pass, the listener has heard the same words enough times that they no longer function as argument. They become something the room does together.

What does the live setting add to a recording like this?

The video is labeled a live performance from the Song of the Soul event in Berkeley, presented by Spirit Voyage Live Events and starring Tina Malia and GuruGanesha. A studio version would give you the lyrics cleanly. The live version gives you duration and room. The repetition of the refrain, the lengthy passages where the vocal drops out and only music remains, and the closing run of "silent awakening" sung over and over until it dissolves into applause, are all things a live room can hold and a recording often cannot. The song is built to be sung by people who are not yet sure they have woken up, which is why its repetitions feel less like padding than like practice.

For a listener reading the lyrics on a page, the most useful thing to keep in mind is that the song does not argue its way toward awakening. It states the premise, repeats it, and lets the repetition do the work. The dream of a dream is not disproven. It is simply seen through, a little more each time the chorus comes back.

Where to go from here

If the song has stayed with you, the most direct next step is to listen to the full video again with the lyric in front of you, paying attention to the instrumental passages as much as the words. Notice where the veil image appears and where the Zion refrain begins, and ask what changes for you when the song moves from the personal to the collective. From there, explore the wider Song of the Soul program and Tina Malia's other recorded work, which the video's description points to through her YouTube channel. Each performance offers its own way into the same questions: what the dream is made of, and what it would take to see the world as it is.

The refrain says 'this world is not what it seems,' pointing to a second layer of illusion: the assumption that ordinary waking life is solid bedrock. The song treats that assumption as another story we tell ourselves, one that can be seen through.
The chorus describes us as 'the roots of the Bodhi tree,' tying the song to the tree traditionally associated with awakening. Paired with the wind carrying seeds and love offered on the wing, it casts the self as something that spreads and gives itself rather than something to protect.
In the bridge, the singer says only love can lift the veil and take its place. The lyric suggests love replaces what the veil hides rather than tearing it away by force, so the view changes without a shock.
The video is a live performance from the Song of the Soul event in Berkeley, California, presented by Spirit Voyage Live Events and starring Tina Malia and GuruGanesha. It was published on YouTube in November 2011.
The Zion refrain turns the song from a personal awakening toward a collective one, calling listeners to open their hearts and unite as one. Its repetition makes the words function as a shared, communal practice rather than a single argument.
The version described is a live recording, and the live setting shapes how it works. Long repetitions and instrumental passages where only music continues give a room time to settle into the song's premise.
