Why We Stop Being Ourselves: Authenticity vs. Attachment

Somewhere between the phone call you didn't want to take and the yes that slipped out before you could stop it, most of us make a quiet deal. We agree to be a slightly smaller, more agreeable version of ourselves so that we stay wanted. In episode 40 of the Mind Detox podcast, trauma-aware therapeutic coach and meditation teacher Sandy Newbigging takes that deal apart. Her argument, built around a short video by Gabor Maté and a newly recorded guided meditation called "Free to Be Me," is that authenticity is not something we lose by accident. It is something we surrender when it threatens the connection we need, and the body usually knows before the mind does. What follows is a close reading of her framework, the reasoning behind it, and what it asks of a listener who wants to stop trading away the self.

Why don't we feel free to be ourselves?

Newbigging opens the episode by admitting that the meditation started life under a different name. She had been calling it something like "done" with abandonment, a play on the idea of being finished with the fear. But the longer she sat with the practice and used it herself, the more it became clear that the real payoff was authenticity. "The freedom to be yourself," as she puts it, is the benefit you get once the fear loosens its grip.

The reframing matters because it shifts the question. Rather than asking only what is wrong, she asks what you gain when the wound heals. Her answer is simple and, she suggests, surprisingly rare: the ability to show up "completely real, true and honest." She is careful to say that no one sets out to be inauthentic. We present a version of ourselves we believe others will find more acceptable, more lovable, easier to be around. The motive is protective, not deceptive, which is exactly why it is so hard to notice from the inside.

What is the attachment versus authenticity trade-off?

The conceptual center of the episode is a claim Newbigging attributes to Gabor Maté: that human beings carry two fundamental needs, attachment and authenticity. Her summary of his position is blunt. "When authenticity threatens attachment, attachment always trumps authenticity." She repeats the line slowly, almost as an instruction, and then spells out what it looks like in practice. When being ourselves threatens our connection, our sense of being wanted, loved, accepted and belonging, we exchange our authenticity for the thing that feels more urgent.

That exchange has a recognizable texture. Newbigging lists it plainly: we present a façade, we say yes when we want to say no, we do things out of obligation, and we compromise ourselves "here, there and everywhere" in order to feel connected. She is candid that none of this is new information to most people. Its value, in her telling, is context. Once you see the trade-off clearly, the behavior stops looking like a personal flaw and starts looking like a survival strategy that has outlived its usefulness.

The distinction she draws is useful for anyone who has ever felt guilty about people-pleasing. The problem is not that we value belonging. The problem is that, under threat, belonging quietly becomes the price of admission for being real, and we pay it without consciously deciding to.

What does authenticity actually mean in the body?

The most striking part of the Maté clip Newbigging plays is its definition. Around the seven-minute mark, he returns to the word's root. "Authentic" comes from the Greek for "self," so authentic means being ourselves. He argues that infants are born this way. Unless they are severely hurt, we arrive connected to our feelings, fully in the present, not rehearsing the past or worrying about the future. In his words, we are simply there "with our bellies and our hearts and our nervous systems and our guts and all the emotions."

That framing relocates authenticity from the head to the whole organism. It is not a mental decision to speak your truth. It is a state of contact with your own sensations and feelings, and it is precisely that contact that social pressure tends to sever. Newbigging picks up the thread in her own voice: much of what we call adulthood, for many people, is the gradual surrender and repression of that early wholeness, carried out in order to fit into family and society.

This is where the argument turns hopeful. Maté says that authenticity can never be fully removed. The part of you that wants to find it, and the part that notices when you have stepped away from it, is the authentic part still working. "The part of you that notices that you're not authentic, that's the authentic part," he says in the clip. Newbigging takes this as the entry point for the work. You do not need to create authenticity from scratch. You need to pay attention to the small moments of noticing.

How do you recognize inauthentic behavior in everyday life?

Maté's example, which Newbigging quotes at length, is deliberately mundane. Imagine a close friend who visits your town and calls to ask for coffee. You are exhausted, or you simply do not want to see them that day. You say yes anyway, because you do not want to disappoint them, and because disappointing people feels like your job to prevent. In Maté's reading, that yes is the inauthentic move. The authentic response is a plain, unembellished no: "I'm sorry, I'm not up for it right now."

He gives a second example from his own life: a stack of requests from writers asking him to read manuscripts and provide blurbs. He says he declined all three, because he lacked the time and energy, and he counts that as authentic. What makes these examples work is their smallness. Authenticity, in this framing, is not a dramatic confession or a life overhaul. It is a series of ordinary refusals and honest admissions, practiced in real time.

Newbigging's instruction is to notice when you are not being authentic, and to do so "without being critical of yourself." That qualifier is doing real work. Shame is one of the ways the attachment strategy keeps itself running. If every moment of people-pleasing triggers self-attack, the lesson becomes "be more agreeable, or be punished," and the cycle deepens. Noticing without condemnation is what allows the authentic part to keep speaking.

What is the "Free to Be Me" meditation designed to heal?

About halfway through the episode, the talk gives way to the practice. Newbigging introduces the meditation as a companion to her earlier healing shame meditation, with a similar structure but a different purpose. Its target is the fear of abandonment, the underlying dread that makes authenticity feel dangerous in the first place. She describes it as addressing the common causes of why we stop being authentic, and she frames the aim in her own phrase: so that you are free to be you.

The guided portion asks listeners to settle into the present, to let the body rest rather than striving to meditate, and to repeat a short, self-affirming thought, letting it linger and sinking the feeling of being safe and secure into the body. Phrases recur throughout: a sense of being soothed, of being secure, of knowing that you are lovable. Later, the practice returns to belonging, framed not as something earned by doing but as something that can be felt as already present. The audience is invited to notice any fear of being abandoned as it arises, rather than pushing it away.

It is worth being precise about what the meditation does and does not claim. Newbigging does not present it as a cure-all, and she does not offer a clinical protocol. It is a guided practice meant to work alongside her broader approach, which she describes as unifying therapy and spirituality. The meditation is one tool for widening the space between the wish to be wanted and the willingness to be seen.

Why does this matter now?

The episode is a reminder that the pressure to perform acceptability is not a niche concern. It runs through families, workplaces, friendships and social feeds, and it rewards the very habits Maté describes: agreeing too quickly, hiding the body's signals, softening the truth to keep the peace. Newbigging's contribution is to treat those habits as intelligent adaptations rather than failings, and to offer a path back to the feelings and sensations that the adaptations were built to protect.

She is also honest about her own position. She introduces herself as a former monk who had to leave a spiritual cult, and her framing reflects a life spent learning how easily belonging can override self-knowledge. That history does not make her a neutral authority on every question, but it gives the episode a grounded, lived quality that a purely theoretical treatment would lack.

Where to go from here

If this episode lands for you, start small. Over the next few days, watch for the moments when you say yes and feel a contraction in your chest or stomach. Maté and Newbigging agree that this sensation is information, and that the part of you that registers it is already your authentic self. You do not need to change your behavior all at once. Try one honest, unembellished no, and notice what happens in your body afterward, without judging the result.

For the practice itself, the episode's guided meditation, "Free to Be Me," is designed to be listened to slowly and repeated. Use it when the fear of abandonment is quiet enough to observe, rather than during a crisis. And if you are curious about the broader framework, Newbigging's own books, including New Beginnings, Mind Calm and Mind Detox, are the places she points to for deeper work on healing the hidden causes of problems in daily life. The question she leaves with the listener is a simple one, and it is worth asking yourself regularly: where in my life am I trading my authentic self for attachment, and what would it take to be free to be me?

[1:10] clients stories and

[1:12] takeaways I'm usually creating a course

[1:14] or writing a new book and I'm on my own

[1:17] journey of healing and knowing

[1:20] myself so thank you for joining me for

[1:23] this episode you never quite know what

[1:26] you're going to get but I hope you get a

[1:28] lot from listening and without further

[1:31] Ado let's

[1:35] [Music]

[1:42] [Music]

[1:46] begin hello and welcome uh welcome to

[1:50] this uh meditation meeting and I have a

[1:53] very special meditation lined up for you

[1:55] today if you have used enjoyed benefited

[2:00] from the healing shame

[2:04] meditation that I released a while ago

[2:08] um I think you're going to really like

[2:09] this one okay has a similar structure to

[2:12] that one but serves a different

[2:17] purpose now ultimately what this

[2:20] meditation we're going to learn today is

[2:22] going to do is it's going to help you to

[2:24] work on

[2:25] healing uh the fear of Abandonment the

[2:28] fear of abandonment

[2:32] um in fact I was at one point going to

[2:34] call it aand

[2:38] done D NE like because you're going to

[2:42] be done with abandonment abandon was

[2:46] quite good say happy with that one uh

[2:50] however the more I sat with it the more

[2:52] I used it myself what it's really for

[2:57] ultimately is authenticity

[3:01] so you can look at the what the problem

[3:03] is or you can look at well if I heal

[3:05] that what do I get as a result of it and

[3:06] so I thought maybe it better to call to

[3:09] to focus more on the benefit of this

[3:11] meditation which is

[3:14] authenticity uh in other words the

[3:17] freedom to be yourself so the meditation

[3:21] is called free to be me free to be me

[3:25] and it's surprising how many of us

[3:27] aren't actually free to be me well not

[3:30] me but you know what I'm

[3:32] saying make that personal for you free

[3:34] to be

[3:36] you and actually opens up a very

[3:38] interesting big conversation and and so

[3:41] I want to start with you know why don't

[3:43] we feel free to be ourselves and even if

[3:46] we aren't aware of it how might we be uh

[3:49] lacking

[3:51] authenticity and no one would

[3:53] intentionally lack authenticity but

[3:55] there's reasons why we don't necess show

[3:58] up completely real true and honest and

[4:02] instead we we present a version of

[4:05] ourselves to the world that we believe

[4:07] others will find more acceptable that

[4:10] others might want that others might

[4:14] love and Gabor mati has shares a lot of

[4:18] really cool stuff about this he says

[4:21] that people have two needs attachment

[4:25] and

[4:27] authenticity okay attachment and

[4:30] authenticity he goes on to say when

[4:34] authenticity threatens attachment

[4:37] attachment always trumps

[4:41] authenticity let me repeat that when

[4:44] authenticity threatens attachment when

[4:47] being our self threatens our

[4:52] connection our being wanted loved

[4:55] accepted and belonging in other

[4:58] words when being ourselves threatens

[5:01] that we will exchange our authenticity

[5:05] for attachment we'll exchange our

[5:07] authenticity for love for being wanted

[5:10] for being accepted for not being

[5:14] abandoned for not being rejected for not

[5:17] being shut out closed off or how

[5:20] whatever words you want to put for it

[5:22] so how amazing is that that that's

[5:25] really that's really powerful to really

[5:26] get your head around that people have

[5:28] two needs attachment

[5:30] authenticity when authenticity threatens

[5:33] attachment attachment always trumps

[5:38] authenticity we give up our authenticity

[5:41] to gain

[5:42] attachment we can end up giving up our

[5:44] authenticity our self our true

[5:47] self we present a facade we say yes we

[5:50] really want to say

[5:52] no we do things out of

[5:55] obligation we're compromising ourselves

[5:58] Here There and

[5:59] Everywhere in order to be loved accepted

[6:03] to experience connection okay we know

[6:06] this this is not brand new news but it's

[6:09] hopefully giving you a context as to why

[6:11] you might want to use this

[6:14] meditation and I took some notes from

[6:17] what um Gabor mati has said about the

[6:20] subject but you know what why don't we

[6:22] just hear from the man himself with us

[6:25] today no I'm joking he's not with us

[6:26] today he's not a special a surprise

[6:28] special guest I will

[6:30] that would be awesome but what I'm going

[6:32] to do is I'm going to play a little

[6:33] video by him is that that's kind of you

[6:35] on the next best

[6:41] thing so I'm going to play Gabor mati so

[6:44] you can hear from himself himself

[6:46] talking about

[6:48] authenticity and uh I think this give us

[6:51] a lot of motivation to use as

[6:53] meditation well just by simple

[6:58] definition authentic on the word Auto

[7:01] which means the

[7:02] self so authentic means being

[7:06] ourselves now we're born being ourselves

[7:09] we can't help but to be born being

[7:12] ourselves unless we're severely hurt and

[7:16] uterus and not

[7:18] well you know we're just born ourselves

[7:22] and that means we're connected to a God

[7:24] feelings to our emotions we're totally

[7:27] in the present we're not thinking about

[7:29] the the past we're not considering or

[7:32] worried about the future we're just

[7:34] there with ourselves with our bellies

[7:37] and our hearts and our nervous

[7:40] systems and our guts and all the

[7:44] emotions that's what means to be

[7:46] authentic to be present with ourselves

[7:49] connected to our bodies and to our

[7:52] emotions and not to be afraid to be

[7:55] ourselves that's what it means to be

[7:58] authentic now for many of of us

[8:02] authenticity shows up in the lack of

[8:07] it and virtually everyone has had the

[8:11] experience

[8:14] of saying

[8:16] something to

[8:18] somebody or acting in a certain

[8:21] way or trying to look in a certain

[8:25] way and there something in you says Ah

[8:28] I'm not being myself I'm not being

[8:33] authentic but that part that notices

[8:37] it that's your authentic

[8:41] self

[8:43] so what I say to people about

[8:45] authenticity is it's an essential part

[8:48] of you in fact you can't help but be

[8:50] there because you were born with it then

[8:51] you can never be without you can never

[8:53] be sh of it you can never be robbed of

[8:57] it but in order to belong and to fit in

[9:00] to your family and your Society you had

[9:03] to really surrender it and hide it and

[9:05] repress it and push it down and even

[9:07] lose contact with

[9:12] it and there are many people in this

[9:14] Society who are totally lost contact

[9:16] with

[9:17] it and they do all kinds of things that

[9:20] makes them miserable and other people

[9:22] miserable and they don't even realize

[9:25] it they don't realize the source of it

[9:29] so in terms of seeking authenticity

[9:31] don't do

[9:36] that because the part of you that wants

[9:38] to find authenticity is already not

[9:40] authentic the part of you that notices

[9:43] that you're not authentic that's the

[9:44] authentic

[9:46] part so pay attention to

[9:49] it and then when you nourish yourself

[9:52] not acting in an authentic way I mean

[9:54] I'm talking about something very simple

[9:56] I come to town and I you know maybe I'm

[9:58] friends with raw or is a Bell or Don any

[10:00] one of the names that I'm seeing on the

[10:02] screen right now and I come to your town

[10:05] wherever it is whether it's Cape Town or

[10:07] Melbourne or Sydney or Kona British

[10:11] Columbia and I call you up and say

[10:14] hey AEL or Isabelle or ra or Sherry or

[10:18] whoever it is do you want to have coffee

[10:20] with

[10:22] me and you don't feel like

[10:25] it

[10:27] because you don't particular feel like

[10:29] see me or you've been up all night

[10:32] you're tired or you have other things to

[10:34] do that you'd rather do but you don't

[10:37] say

[10:38] [Music]

[10:39] no you don't say

[10:41] no because you're trying to please me

[10:44] and be nice and make sure that I'm not

[10:47] disappointed which you think is your job

[10:49] not to disappoint

[10:52] me so you say

[10:55] yes that's

[10:57] inauthentic the authentic thing is I'm

[10:59] sorry Gabor I'm not up for it right now

[11:02] that's the authentic

[11:05] thing this morning I'm very proud of

[11:07] myself I had three requests for people

[11:11] writing books ask me to read them and

[11:13] write blurbs for

[11:14] them I don't have the time or the energy

[11:17] right now I said no in every

[11:22] case that's

[11:27] authentic so notice when you're not

[11:29] being

[11:30] authentic and then without being

[11:32] critical of yourself or I wasn't being

[11:34] authentic what terrible be

[11:38] curious what was I afraid

[11:42] of so you're going to find your

[11:44] authenticity by noticing where you're

[11:46] not

[11:49] authentic and the part of that is

[11:51] noticing

[11:53] it not the part of that's judging

[11:56] it but the part of that just noticing it

[11:59] ah I wasn't being authentic I'm wonder

[12:02] why not that's the authentic

[12:06] part so to

[12:09] summarize authenticity is simply a part

[12:12] of our essential nature it's a part of

[12:15] every tees every creature is entral

[12:19] nature but pretty much human

[12:22] beings are the only

[12:26] animals

[12:28] who for s reasons give up their

[12:33] authenticity so that's what I would to

[12:35] say about authenticity it's the

[12:38] self now people that go into it deeply

[12:43] will find that the self will have its

[12:44] physical aspects if has psychological

[12:47] aspects spiritual

[12:50] aspects some people find

[12:53] out I can't prescribe nor can anybody

[12:56] else prescribe for anyone else what

[12:58] their authenticity should look

[13:00] like but for most people it's going to

[13:04] be shining in a number of different

[13:13] dimensions he said a lot of things in

[13:15] there if I'd I could play again and stop

[13:17] it every 3 seconds probably every few

[13:18] seconds and dissect it the bits that

[13:21] jumped out for me was that it's your

[13:23] authentic nature and it's who you are

[13:25] when you're present so it very much

[13:27] aligns with what we talk about here you

[13:29] know what's got authenticity got to do

[13:31] with the cam clown or Consciousness or

[13:34] being at peace well we talk a lot here

[13:37] about being present right

[13:41] and when we're authentic when authentity

[13:45] naturally causes us to reside more in in

[13:48] the present

[13:49] moment so being authentic is to be

[13:52] ourselves our authentic

[13:54] nature and he talks about being present

[13:57] with ourselves connected to our body and

[13:59] our

[14:00] emotions so isn't that interesting that

[14:02] when we in order to fit in be loved

[14:07] accepted etc

[14:09] etc we forsake the connection with

[14:11] ourselves we we we disconnect from our

[14:14] body we disconnect from our emotions we

[14:16] have to because our emotions are usually

[14:18] screaming in the opposite direction for

[14:21] example he talks about it not to not be

[14:24] afraid of being ourselves did anyone did

[14:25] that hit anybody that that when he said

[14:27] that not being afraid of being

[14:30] ourselves and we stop being ourselves in

[14:32] order to get connection or

[14:35] attachment in order to belong and fit in

[14:38] we have to suppress ourselves and be

[14:40] someone that's more acceptable wanted

[14:42] someone that's more lovable and so for

[14:44] example he talks about how we end up

[14:46] saying yes it's not the only criteria of

[14:50] authenticity say learning to say no but

[14:52] it's one of the good examples that I

[14:54] think many of us are are familiar

[14:58] with I'm just sticking with Gabor before

[15:00] moving on to the next bit I wanted to

[15:01] talk about

[15:06] is he shares a beautiful quote uh that

[15:09] safety is not the absence of threat

[15:12] safety is the presence of

[15:16] connection safety is not the ABS absence

[15:19] of threat it's the presence of

[15:23] connection and that is the perfect link

[15:27] which is why this thing I keep talking

[15:30] about called abandonment or fral

[15:33] abandonment is so key to uh our child's

[15:39] development on all levels uh our ability

[15:43] to remain connected to ourselves and

[15:44] others our ability to be in successful

[15:48] later in life

[15:51] essentially when we're first

[15:53] born connection equals protection and

[15:57] protection equals safety and if for any

[16:00] reason the primary

[16:02] caregiver often referred to as Mom but I

[16:05] don't know if you're like to even say

[16:06] the word mom anymore because it might be

[16:09] politically

[16:10] incorrect everyone goes yeah I feel you

[16:14] Kimberly um if Mom or whoever is the

[16:19] primary

[16:20] caregiver uh I'm

[16:21] not and I mean that because maybe Mom

[16:24] something happened mom so whoever is

[16:25] really there with the child uh the

[16:27] primary caregiver

[16:29] if they're unable if it's a failure to

[16:31] bond in any way whatsoever if the parent

[16:34] is unable to match and mirror uh the

[16:38] child um in other words if the parent is

[16:41] unable through their connection

[16:43] mirroring and bonding to help that child

[16:46] feel

[16:47] safe

[16:49] soothed

[16:51] seen and

[16:54] secure then there's probably going to be

[16:57] the development of a fear of of abandon

[16:59] M there's probably going to be an

[17:02] experience of Abandonment in that child

[17:04] which then causes a what could be a

[17:07] lifelong fear of Abandonment not being

[17:08] abandoned and that's when we start

[17:10] losing our authenticity

[17:13] right because a child goes it must be

[17:17] me what can I do in order

[17:20] [Music]

[17:22] to gain be seen by my mom be soothed by

[17:26] my mom be made secure

[17:30] uh what can I

[17:33] do and that can cause us to start

[17:36] literally performing

[17:39] from very early on in our life and being

[17:42] someone or something that we believe

[17:45] they need us to be in order for them to

[17:49] want us accept us love us did you get

[17:53] the point guys did you get the

[17:56] point so this is why I want to do this

[17:59] this meditation free to be

[18:01] me um it's it's it's as deep as you want

[18:06] to go with it it could be just a

[18:08] self-image thing or it could go to like

[18:10] the nature of the self type thing

[18:13] because obviously the more we're doing

[18:16] to be

[18:18] someone we're going to be moving away

[18:20] from the innate

[18:22] self that

[18:25] is has been and always will be okay so

[18:29] you can engage this meditation at

[18:30] whatever level you wish uh from simple

[18:34] self image or self-development or self

[18:36] growth or self-healing and or to

[18:40] literally learn to really be the self

[18:45] again so to do that the meditation helps

[18:48] us to give ourselves what we might not

[18:51] have been given as a

[18:56] child today

[18:59] we're going to be seen we're going to be

[19:01] soothed and we're going to be secure so

[19:04] that's the first part of the the

[19:08] meditation I am seen I'm soothed I am

[19:11] secure and we're going to go from the

[19:13] naval solar plexus up to the

[19:15] heart that's what we need all of us as

[19:18] babies but also as big babies with hairy

[19:21] faces

[19:23] and you name you fill in the blank for

[19:26] the Fe the female equivalent

[19:30] we all need to be seen

[19:32] heard

[19:34] soothed and in that understood and that

[19:38] gain that connection and and belonging

[19:40] that's where the healing lies we can

[19:42] have a million in one techniques and

[19:44] therapy techniques and meditation

[19:46] techniques but that's the ultimate

[19:48] therapy to be

[19:51] seen and understood and

[19:54] heard to be soothed whether that's

[19:57] soothing ourselves that's why I

[19:58] recommend that book last month which has

[20:00] got lots of practical ways to soothe the

[20:01] ANS and we've got practical things that

[20:04] we do here for that as

[20:07] well and ultimately to feel secure and

[20:09] from that Foundation we then go into

[20:12] like kind of part two of The

[20:14] Meditation which I'm going to leave as a

[20:16] surprise for you let me just check my

[20:18] notes to see there anything I missed out

[20:20] before we teach the meditation another

[20:22] quote from gabar jumped out to me when

[20:24] preparing for today was that parenting

[20:26] is not about techniques parenting is

[20:28] about

[20:30] relationship it's really that simple

[20:32] because that is our Essence

[20:35] relationship parenting is not about

[20:37] techniques parenting is about

[20:39] relationship okay and for no fault of

[20:43] their no for no fault blame or

[20:47] shaming so so few people know how to

[20:50] actually connect how to relate how to

[20:55] bond and so that's why I keep talking in

[20:58] in so many of my client sessions were

[21:00] healing proximal abandonment this

[21:03] failure to bond between mother and

[21:06] child and you know from previous

[21:08] sessions and conversations that spins

[21:10] off

[21:12] into insecurities toxic

[21:16] shame self-sabotage health issues

[21:19] anxiety

[21:21] depression inability to connect later in

[21:23] life loneliness chronic

[21:26] loneliness um even if you're in

[21:28] relationships others feeling like an

[21:30] island blah blah blah blah blah it goes

[21:31] on and on and on so it's a big deal so

[21:34] let's do it let's get into the

[21:35] meditation shall

[21:43] we welcome to this meditation for being

[21:46] free to be your authentic

[21:50] self to be authentic is to be your real

[21:53] and honest

[21:55] self however it is very common to stop

[21:58] being being ourself by instead being

[22:02] what we believe others want us to be in

[22:05] order for them to want us to accept us

[22:09] to love

[22:11] us you see when we are first born and

[22:14] during our early years connection equals

[22:18] protection and when we feel connected we

[22:21] feel

[22:24] safe this inner safety as a child allows

[22:27] for us to develop properly remain

[22:30] connected to

[22:32] ourself to be able to connect with

[22:34] others and enjoy success on all levels

[22:38] later in

[22:41] life and so to be your authentic self

[22:46] during the first part of this meditation

[22:49] you're going to give yourself what you

[22:51] need as a child the need to feel seen

[22:55] soothed and secure

[23:00] so let's begin by sitting or laying

[23:03] comfortably before closing your eyes and

[23:06] just being

[23:11] here be where your body is be where life

[23:15] is happening right here always

[23:20] here for the next few minutes you're

[23:23] going to enjoy a well-deserved timeout

[23:29] you're just going to be quiet rest into

[23:33] your completely acceptable and lovable

[23:36] self and allow yourself to just be as

[23:41] you

[23:41] [Music]

[23:43] are you have permission to do absolutely

[23:47] nothing just rest for a while noticing

[23:51] that now is happening as you relax

[23:54] further and remain

[23:57] completely safe

[24:00] and

[24:01] comfortable as you are

[24:08] now breathe as you would

[24:11] naturally let any tension in your

[24:13] forehead and around your eyes to Simply

[24:17] melt

[24:19] away while remaining gently

[24:22] alert with your tension wide and open

[24:28] [Music]

[24:30] don't even try to meditate

[24:33] right just notice it is naturally

[24:36] Happening by

[24:38] resting and

[24:40] remembering what it's like to just

[24:45] be you know this state of effortless

[24:49] being just

[24:52] being being

[24:55] you

[24:57] here now

[25:00] gently

[25:01] aware wide and

[25:05] open you can rest here

[25:08] now in the secure safe sanctuary of your

[25:13] innermost

[25:15] [Music]

[25:19] being

[25:20] remember we can often give away our

[25:24] authenticity in order to be wanted

[25:27] accepted and loved

[25:29] and so for this meditation we will

[25:31] occasionally think a series of healing

[25:33] thoughts for healing the fear of being

[25:37] abandoned and so you can fearlessly be

[25:43] yourself to enhance the embodiment of

[25:46] these healing thoughts let yourself feel

[25:48] them as already true while thinking them

[25:53] with consistent practice they will feel

[25:55] more and more true for you

[26:02] okay going further still into the

[26:05] healing Stillness

[26:11] within and with the knowing I am

[26:14] safe and your focus in the

[26:17] navl think and feel I am seen

[26:38] let the feeling of being witnessed and

[26:41] seen to

[26:43] linger as you repeat the thought as

[26:45] often as you wish to until we move on I

[26:50] am seen

[26:52] [Music]

[27:06] for

[27:38] [Music]

[27:46] with the knowing I am safe and with your

[29:26] [Music]

[29:36] let the comforting feeling of being

[29:47] am soothed

[34:45] with the knowing I am safe and your

[34:46] focus and your heart think and feel I am

[34:52] secure

In the clip Sandy Newbigging plays, Maté describes attachment and authenticity as two core human needs. When being ourselves threatens our connection, our sense of being loved and accepted, attachment wins and we give up our authenticity to keep belonging.
Newbigging explains that no one intentionally lacks authenticity. We present a version of ourselves we think others will find more acceptable, often out of a fear of rejection or abandonment, and we do this so consistently that we can lose contact with our real feelings.
Free to Be Me is a guided meditation by Sandy Newbigging designed to help heal the fear of abandonment and the common causes of inauthenticity. It uses a repeated self-affirming thought and invites listeners to notice any fear of being abandoned as it arises.
Maté suggests watching for moments when you say yes while your body or feelings signal otherwise, such as saying yes to a coffee date you don't want. Noticing that discomfort is itself the authentic part of you at work, and you can practice noticing without self-criticism.
According to Maté as quoted by Newbigging, authenticity is innate: we are born being ourselves, connected to our bodies and emotions. Because we had to surrender it to belong, we can't lose it entirely; the part of us that notices its absence remains authentic.
Newbigging describes herself as a trauma-aware therapeutic coach and meditation teacher and the author of 12 books, including New Beginnings, Mind Calm and Mind Detox. The Mind Detox podcast shares extracts from her webinars and occasional guest conversations about healing hidden causes of problems.
