[0:08] thank you
[0:10] hello and welcome to the Mind detox
[0:12] podcast I'm your host Sandy newbigging
[0:16] for today's episode I'm showing an
[0:18] interview that my wife and I did with
[0:21] relationship expert Alison Armstrong
[0:25] now I asked my wife to join me for this
[0:27] interview not only because she's a big
[0:28] fan of Alison's work and they made her
[0:32] very happy to have a chance to talk to
[0:33] her
[0:34] um also because my wife actually
[0:37] introduced me to Alison's work a few
[0:39] years ago but perhaps most importantly
[0:42] it felt right because we credit Alison
[0:45] to saving our relationship a few years
[0:48] ago we were going through a tricky time
[0:50] Casino came across Allison's work
[0:52] started applying it things improved
[0:55] almost immediately and I guess you can
[0:58] see the rest is history we not long
[1:00] after that got engaged and then married
[1:03] and so I guess you could say that my
[1:05] wife and I are one of Alison Armstrong's
[1:07] many
[1:08] relationship success stories and so I
[1:11] really was excited when she agreed to
[1:13] join us for this interview we start by
[1:16] asking Allison to share a couple of her
[1:18] foundational principles at the heart of
[1:21] her work and then go on to ask her about
[1:24] things like how to resolve conflict
[1:26] relationships and how to bring out the
[1:29] best in each other and I do recommend
[1:31] you stay tuned because we absolutely
[1:34] loved the closing advice that she gave
[1:37] at the end of the interview
[1:39] so before passing over to the interview
[1:41] I just want to give you a quick intro to
[1:44] Allison and their official bio which I
[1:46] have here Alison Armstrong's exploration
[1:48] of human behavior began in 1991 with the
[1:52] decision to study men and a quote to
[1:54] find out how I was bringing out the
[1:56] worst in them and hopefully how to bring
[1:59] out the best her success in
[2:01] understanding men naturally led to her
[2:03] studying women's behavior and making
[2:05] vital connections between the two one of
[2:09] the things I love about Allison's work
[2:11] is her focus on understanding why and
[2:14] really getting to the root cause as to
[2:16] what's going on and and when you resolve
[2:18] the cause then the symptoms take care of
[2:21] themselves and we can have massive
[2:22] improvements
[2:24] she shares practical
[2:27] partnership-based Alternatives and
[2:29] through her work and she's been giving
[2:31] millions of people more access to
[2:35] fulfilling lives loving relationships
[2:38] stronger families and productive
[2:41] organizations her Live Events and over a
[2:44] hundred hours of online programs are
[2:46] available at her website
[2:48] alisonarmstrom.com so without further
[2:52] Ado hope you enjoy this interview with
[2:55] Alison Armstrong
[3:04] so hello and welcome
[3:07] Allison
[3:10] so glad to be here hi everybody and hi
[3:13] Alice and welcome to the karma Clan
[3:17] that's where you are by the way you're
[3:19] in the calm Clan tonight
[3:20] calm Clan yes
[3:23] it's a meditation Community we also
[3:26] explore therapy stuff and it's all about
[3:28] being calm and present and living in the
[3:30] moment and stuff
[3:31] oh the calm homes
[3:35] c-a-l-m oh awesome I was just talking
[3:39] about that a little while ago
[3:40] we may have difficulty with my Scottish
[3:42] accent and my Mexican accent so
[3:47] sometimes after translating your head
[3:49] we're trying to say
[3:52] well if you have trouble with my
[3:55] American works with people all over the
[3:58] place Hodge project mid western eastern
[4:02] Colorado Cowboy howdy so
[4:06] be with that I'm sure we can work it out
[4:10] we've already said we're so excited to
[4:12] be with you tonight
[4:13] um or today
[4:14] uh I I can quite honestly say that you
[4:17] probably saved our relationship yeah so
[4:20] thank you thank you now
[4:24] you're welcome and I'm pretty sure you
[4:28] saved your relationship because you had
[4:31] to have the hard Quest conversations you
[4:34] had to cough up the truth you had to
[4:36] make adjustments I might have just
[4:38] pointed what to do but you had to do all
[4:40] the heavy lifting
[4:42] you took all the risks
[4:45] yeah so that's true yeah we're so
[4:48] grateful for your work
[4:50] um yeah it was like five years ago I was
[4:52] lying in the couch going crazy like why
[4:54] am I destroying it another man that
[4:56] keeps telling me the same things I'm
[4:57] controlling I'm nothing's enough and I
[5:00] was like maybe it's me
[5:03] and through a friend I grab your book
[5:05] after resisting it for like a year and
[5:08] it totally changed our relationship and
[5:12] we after that go engaged then then got
[5:15] married so it kind of we're a success
[5:17] story from your work
[5:19] we've shared it with a lot of the people
[5:22] that are here and many others uh with
[5:24] shared your your work and we're so happy
[5:26] we get to ask you some questions
[5:29] yeah we feel like we know you already
[5:31] you must get that all the time
[5:32] we've listened we've driven on Europe a
[5:34] lot because we used to live in Spain now
[5:36] in Mexico and in our long long road
[5:38] trips we'd have you all your audiobooks
[5:40] like playing and we'd be listening to
[5:42] them and talking about them over dinner
[5:44] and stuff so yeah so thank you so much
[5:46] first of all
[5:48] you're you're very welcome
[5:50] [Music]
[5:53] just so you know what I do
[5:56] doesn't make any difference until you
[5:59] have the courage to do something with it
[6:05] I'm very clear about my part but anybody
[6:09] who says that I saved them or formed
[6:12] their lives I know who really did it and
[6:16] honestly everything I do would have no
[6:18] value if you didn't act upon it so so
[6:20] bless you for that
[6:23] thank you well congratulations
[6:26] thanks
[6:27] so for those that don't know you can we
[6:30] start with you just sharing like if you
[6:32] could distill like a couple of your
[6:34] fundamental principles at the heart of
[6:36] your work so people that are just
[6:37] meeting you can get a sense of where
[6:39] you're coming from and then we'll go
[6:40] from there
[6:44] nobody has ever asked me to
[6:50] ask me that's amazing
[6:53] okay so this would be not canned but if
[6:56] I was going to distill the principles at
[6:58] the heart of my work I would say that
[7:02] where you started wanting to understand
[7:05] the cause and effect
[7:08] is definitely
[7:11] um part of my engineering mind is taking
[7:14] it apart taking apart taking apart to
[7:16] try to see where did the Mischief begin
[7:19] where where did this go awry where
[7:24] and when I started studying men I
[7:26] thought maybe it's just hopeless maybe
[7:28] what women want from men men don't want
[7:31] to be
[7:32] I I was willing for it to be hopeless
[7:35] and then was
[7:37] shocked to find out most women are still
[7:42] waiting for the hero to write up it's
[7:45] white or black horse and
[7:48] um
[7:49] yeah we we still we still want a hero
[7:51] and what a hero looks to each of us is
[7:54] different but we still want one at least
[7:57] one and so then I started asking mine
[8:01] if you could be anything for a woman you
[8:04] loved what would you be
[8:05] and a shortcut where it got to it
[8:09] stunned me but the answer was their hero
[8:12] and I didn't give them that room they
[8:15] gave me that word so
[8:18] um that was early on in 1991
[8:21] and
[8:22] I really only expected to study men for
[8:25] two or three months
[8:27] um I had an extremely negative opinion
[8:30] attitude point of view towards men I
[8:33] knew they were shallow I knew they had
[8:35] no feelings so you couldn't hurt them
[8:37] you know they were superficial so you
[8:41] know this should be really quick to
[8:43] figure out how I might bring out the
[8:45] worst to them well maybe it was all of
[8:47] that that it was how I was freaking out
[8:49] the worst Cinema and uh I've never
[8:51] committed to studying men long term I
[8:54] just became fascinated and
[8:57] so another principle would be what's my
[9:00] part
[9:01] um the first part of the word
[9:03] partnership is part so what's my part
[9:05] what do I have to do with it and that's
[9:08] why I was thrilled when my friend was
[9:10] called a frog farmer and I had the
[9:12] realization that I was one because I
[9:15] tried to change men and it didn't work
[9:18] but I could change me I've been involved
[9:20] in transformation since I was 19 years
[9:22] old so me I knew how to how to alter
[9:27] um so what's my part is definitely
[9:30] um at the foundation
[9:33] um in in the search for cause and effect
[9:36] one of the things I found out was how
[9:39] much false cause
[9:41] um gets assigned and that that's what
[9:43] mostly makes us ineffective that when we
[9:46] answer the question why does he do that
[9:48] why does she do that why do I do that
[9:51] the answer
[9:54] is usually personal
[9:56] it's usually because I am because this
[10:01] happened to me because of my blink
[10:05] so it's it's usually
[10:08] an answer that's that's personal to
[10:13] um personality birth order religion
[10:16] ethnicity how many brothers and sisters
[10:18] you had single mom single dad
[10:23] um trauma abuse neglect
[10:27] shock like it's usually you know
[10:30] assigned to those things and I've found
[10:34] that most yes those things all happen
[10:37] but mostly why we do what we do is
[10:42] it's before individual it's even their
[10:47] gender differences for sure they count
[10:51] but there's also mindset
[10:54] the depending on what gender you are
[10:57] will affect mindset and mindset will
[10:59] affect the whole expression of that are
[11:02] you in a committed state of mind or open
[11:03] state of mind and then even before
[11:06] gender there's human
[11:08] there's human instincts and things that
[11:11] human beings do and then in the last few
[11:16] years of my work it's even below that
[11:18] there are things that were driven by
[11:20] that aren't merely human instincts
[11:24] their instincts
[11:27] have heard animals and pack animals and
[11:31] they're even before that they're the
[11:33] instincts of microbes
[11:36] what we're driven by has its origins in
[11:41] so much before our personalities we're
[11:44] like this like our personal experience
[11:46] would be up here everything we've
[11:49] inherited would be the base of the
[11:51] pyramid
[11:52] and in in looking at things that way
[11:57] most of my work is about becoming aware
[12:01] of these mostly unconscious compulsions
[12:05] and in those moments of awareness is
[12:09] when we can make a conscious choice
[12:12] when the prefrontal cortex can go oh
[12:16] I'm feeling tense
[12:18] oh that'd be an indicator I'm compelled
[12:20] by Instinct and I'm about to do
[12:21] something that's going to make
[12:22] everything worse let's take a breath
[12:26] ah okay what are some of my choices oh
[12:29] be curious I could get curious go from
[12:32] Furious to curious
[12:37] why do they do that
[12:40] well why did they do that what if I'm
[12:43] completely off base
[12:45] how about I ask
[12:47] how about I ask kindly like
[12:51] you're a good person
[12:54] a good reason for the things you're
[12:55] doing so you must have had a good reason
[12:57] for that and I think I've misinterpreted
[12:59] and that's why I can hardly breathe
[13:00] right now could you eliminate please
[13:03] slowly gently
[13:06] courage takes courage
[13:08] thank you Allison that was a very nice
[13:11] um really good and thorough
[13:14] um summary of what you do and I love
[13:15] that I love that I
[13:18] I used to feel like well I'm not like
[13:21] any other woman I am not like this don't
[13:23] put me in a box but then when you
[13:25] understand it from the biological and
[13:27] evolutionary perspective
[13:29] we laugh so much at the simple stuff
[13:32] like I need him to tell me that he likes
[13:36] my food because before I can enjoy my
[13:38] meal
[13:40] and when
[13:43] you know and and when um we start
[13:46] understanding and I started
[13:47] understanding why these things happen it
[13:49] just makes it makes it so much more
[13:51] simple
[13:54] um and one of the things for me as a
[13:57] woman
[13:58] is that the safer I felt around him the
[14:01] more feminine I I became naturally and
[14:04] the softer I became
[14:06] and so my question to you is what can
[14:11] a man do
[14:13] and I know there's so much information
[14:15] that you give so guys please just go and
[14:18] and read her work watch her lectures
[14:20] because we cannot cover even a
[14:22] percentage of what she shares with us
[14:25] but in a nutshell is there some specific
[14:28] things a man can do to help the woman
[14:31] feel safe
[14:33] so then she relaxes and is feminine and
[14:36] bubbly and all that
[14:40] yeah
[14:41] um can I do both sides of it though yes
[14:45] we were gonna as well yes
[14:50] okay well it's just easier to contrast
[14:53] it
[14:54] so this goes back to what I said about
[14:57] state of the mind
[14:59] um is a man or woman in a committed
[15:01] State of Mind are they in an open State
[15:04] of Mind
[15:05] committed state of mind would have a
[15:08] result an objective a goal a destination
[15:12] and the commitment to that
[15:16] changes our perceptions and how we
[15:20] process our perceptions
[15:21] and including screening out everything
[15:26] that's irrelevant to what we committed
[15:28] to
[15:29] and this can be very good in
[15:32] accomplishing certain things
[15:34] it but it can also cause a lot of
[15:36] problems like for example if a man or
[15:39] woman decides I'm gonna get married
[15:42] okay
[15:43] I'm going to be married within a year
[15:46] and they pick a person this is the
[15:49] person is the person I'm going to marry
[15:50] and their brain is screening out all the
[15:53] information that's coming at them saying
[15:56] this is not a good person for you
[15:59] this person doesn't care about you
[16:03] everything you say you need they
[16:05] invalidate but they'll just screen that
[16:07] out because this is the person we're
[16:08] going to marry within a year so it can
[16:11] can you see their side effects right and
[16:14] then in an open state of mind which
[16:16] mostly men are in an open State of Mind
[16:18] when you're at play is what you might
[16:22] call it
[16:24] um you have no results to produce you're
[16:26] not committed to anything you can play
[16:29] and it's we fall in love with you when
[16:31] you're like that because we can connect
[16:33] with you better and
[16:35] um when you're focused it's really
[16:38] difficult to connect unless we learn to
[16:40] connect over what you're focused on
[16:44] and if we do that then we can transform
[16:47] anything from a barrier to a bridge and
[16:53] um like my boyfriend Dan he he golfs
[16:56] about five days a week and
[16:59] and I could I could call myself a golf
[17:01] Widow if I wanted to but why would I you
[17:04] get so much out of it and and I get to
[17:06] ask him questions and he tells me all
[17:08] about it and it's this thing we get to
[17:10] connect over and
[17:13] um
[17:13] so the safety thing when we're in a
[17:18] committed State of Mind whether we're
[17:20] male or female will experience what we
[17:24] usually call feeling secure rather than
[17:27] safe I've honestly only heard men use
[17:30] the way room the word safe
[17:34] um as it relates to a woman being safe
[17:36] to talk to
[17:38] that in communication there is safety or
[17:41] not safety but other than that it's
[17:45] about being secure and when we're in
[17:47] committed state of mind we experience
[17:49] being secure when we're being productive
[17:52] and our greatest access to productivity
[17:56] is respect
[17:59] and Trust
[18:01] and this is why
[18:03] especially men will have a huge caveman
[18:08] attack a huge upset over anything that
[18:13] feels disrespectful or is an indicator
[18:16] of I I don't trust you if you don't
[18:19] trust me you don't know me if you don't
[18:20] know me you don't respect me so trust
[18:23] and respect this is one of the ways
[18:25] women bring out the worst in men without
[18:28] even knowing it we do something that is
[18:32] disrespectful
[18:34] um or like interrupting we just walk in
[18:37] and interrupt as if what you're focused
[18:39] on is stupid and we'll even think it's
[18:41] stupid that we have every right to
[18:43] interrupt because what you're doing is
[18:44] stupid and we don't know how hurtful
[18:48] that is
[18:50] um so
[18:53] in a committed State of Mind trust and
[18:55] respect and being productive that will
[18:57] matter to a woman as well and
[19:02] I remember my husband asking me I was
[19:05] just like and so much I had to
[19:07] accomplish to get ready for this big
[19:09] family party and he said he said what
[19:12] can I do
[19:13] and and I had to stop and think what can
[19:15] you do
[19:19] what can you do right what can you do in
[19:24] other words my way and it ended up
[19:27] opening up this whole area of we called
[19:30] it certification so he would get he'd
[19:33] take on I'd like to be certified in this
[19:36] so I can provide it for you so you got
[19:38] certified in making me breakfast you got
[19:40] certified in making me coffee but
[19:46] studies showed that
[19:50] that men's vision and women's vision is
[19:53] very different and that the faster an
[19:55] object is moving the bigger the
[19:57] difference between a man's ability to
[20:00] track it and a woman's ability to not
[20:02] track it and so I used to laugh that the
[20:05] reverse issue because I say to Great
[20:08] okay just clean off the bar
[20:10] and so he would go take everything he'd
[20:13] stacked up on the bar and he'd stick it
[20:15] behind the bar
[20:18] and then I go look at the bar and I like
[20:21] um honey could you dust it please and
[20:23] he's like dust I said yeah there's a lot
[20:25] of dust on the bar
[20:27] what dust and I just figured it wasn't
[20:30] moving he couldn't see it because it
[20:32] wasn't moving
[20:33] dust was invisible but when we're in an
[20:38] open State of Mind what has us
[20:40] experience being safe is connection this
[20:44] that's where the herd and the pack shows
[20:46] up
[20:47] um again in another way that if I'm
[20:49] connected I'm safe if I'm liked I'm safe
[20:53] if I'm considered pleasing I am safe
[20:56] that's where you're do you like my
[20:58] dinner right you know you like my food
[21:00] before I can enjoy it and
[21:04] it's
[21:05] um the greatest access just like trust
[21:09] and respect are the greatest actor
[21:11] access to productivity
[21:14] attention and interest our greatest
[21:17] access to connection
[21:19] and and this is why women will get
[21:22] really out of sorts when a man is
[21:25] focused on something even a young man
[21:28] like
[21:29] 13 year old who's already started
[21:31] puberty that's a young man and not being
[21:34] able to get his attention will cause a
[21:37] lot of tension in her body a lot of
[21:39] anxiety in her body it's one of the
[21:41] reasons why many moms hate video games
[21:44] because they're designed so well for the
[21:48] for the male brain and to appeal to
[21:51] everything that the male brain thrives
[21:54] on like you make a move you get a point
[21:56] you take a bigger risk you get more
[21:59] points you fall off a cliff you push a
[22:01] button you reset you get to start over
[22:03] and there was no punishment
[22:06] and nobody drags you to the next level
[22:09] you get to decide I'm really good at
[22:12] this I'm ready for the next level you
[22:14] don't have someone saying okay you're a
[22:16] really good boyfriend now when you're
[22:18] gonna ask me to marry you
[22:20] you try to drag me into the next level a
[22:24] lot to be learned from video games
[22:25] including it's a way that you can
[22:27] connect you can connect over video games
[22:30] um
[22:31] so attention and attention and intention
[22:35] back directly to your to your question
[22:38] Sandy I'm not I mean Christina is
[22:43] that's what has us feel connected and
[22:47] then feel safe and then relax
[22:50] and not be striving not be on the attack
[22:55] not be trying to get a feeling of safety
[23:01] and to that end my biggest
[23:03] recommendation is to find out from all
[23:06] the women in your life that interact
[23:08] with on a regular basis
[23:10] what are their favorite questions
[23:14] find out what their favorite questions
[23:16] are because how are you you ask a woman
[23:20] how are you
[23:23] we are compelled to answer that question
[23:26] [Music]
[23:27] honestly and completely
[23:32] and an hour later after you've heard
[23:35] about my physical state my mental state
[23:37] my emotional state maybe my etherical
[23:40] state my spiritual State and the state
[23:42] of all the people that I love how's my
[23:45] donkey doing my dog my boyfriend my
[23:48] three kids
[23:50] after you've heard about all that now I
[23:52] have answered how are you completely and
[23:55] honestly and of course as a man
[23:58] somewhere in there you go is there a
[24:00] point here you're thinking this in your
[24:02] head and then you're like how am I ever
[24:04] gonna remember all this and then your
[24:07] eyes cross
[24:08] and we're not done talking but we think
[24:11] you don't really care about us so your
[24:13] effort to show attention to show
[24:17] interest backfires
[24:20] because of the question you ask causes a
[24:23] flood of details your brain's not ready
[24:25] for and and sometimes the report of how
[24:30] are you is a is a lot of complaining a
[24:33] lot of aches and pains and anxiousness
[24:36] and
[24:38] so that's why if you find out her
[24:40] favorite questions to be asked there are
[24:42] questions that almost always will access
[24:44] her passions and what men have taught me
[24:48] is that when you're listening to a woman
[24:49] talk about what she's passionate about
[24:52] you actually have a surge they don't but
[24:55] they don't know this but I found out you
[24:57] have a surge of testosterone of
[24:59] testosterone spilling into your blood
[25:02] and it gives you a sense of well-being
[25:04] and you're uplifted by that and so
[25:08] finding out the favorite questions are
[25:10] good for both people and for the
[25:12] connection so whether it's
[25:16] um did you do something today that that
[25:19] made you happy or
[25:22] um what are you learning there are
[25:24] people who just love to learn what what
[25:26] did you learn today or is there anything
[25:28] you learned today you want to tell me
[25:29] about
[25:30] or Dan says to me
[25:33] um is there anything you want me to know
[25:34] about you and then I sort all the things
[25:38] I could say for but what I want him to
[25:41] know about me
[25:43] and it leaves Out All the Rest of
[25:47] everything going on in my life my family
[25:49] my business
[25:51] um some people it's travel
[25:54] um where do you want to travel next or
[25:56] were you planning to travel next or
[25:59] where's your favorite place what are
[26:01] your favorite places to have ever
[26:02] traveled and what did you love about
[26:04] them like if you're
[26:06] you know have a bigger space all kinds
[26:08] of questions
[26:10] um
[26:13] but you gotta ask gotta ask what are
[26:15] your favorite questions to be asked and
[26:17] then showing interest in that almost
[26:20] always works
[26:22] thank you Christina what you're looking
[26:25] for yeah I don't know if it was but it
[26:28] was wonderful either way I'm just like
[26:31] something thank you yeah all right now
[26:34] you have helped her so much with the
[26:37] meta report I I helped that helped me so
[26:40] much the the medal report oh my God it's
[26:44] um and also knowing that about I think
[26:46] almost combined with the diffuse
[26:47] awareness and the focused awareness I
[26:49] don't know how you call it but um
[26:52] hope she now comes and says is this is
[26:54] this a good time to talk or she just
[26:56] doesn't start talking you know and I'm
[26:58] you know normally into something and I
[26:59] would feel torn at that moment and I
[27:02] would never be able to get the attention
[27:03] that I could so it's so much better now
[27:05] you kind of go is it now a good time and
[27:07] I can actually freely say 10 minutes
[27:09] would be good and I'm allowed that you
[27:12] know things like that so all that really
[27:13] helps you know but the meta report can
[27:16] you briefly talk about that because I've
[27:17] shared it with a few people we've only
[27:19] got so much so much time but can you
[27:20] give a little synopsis as to what the
[27:23] medical report is and why it's so
[27:24] important
[27:25] okay so we talk about this kind of stuff
[27:28] about women
[27:30] um we do it the best in our online
[27:33] understanding women course
[27:36] um the one that's on Audible uh was done
[27:39] in 2008 and it's just about women in
[27:42] gathering mode with diffuse awareness it
[27:46] doesn't account for the most women are
[27:48] spending the majority of their time in a
[27:50] committed State of Mind
[27:52] struggling with the need to focus
[27:56] um so you can think of it as a spectrum
[28:00] diffuse awareness and single focus on
[28:03] each end absolute single focus is
[28:06] usually called autism
[28:08] take the
[28:10] it's a extraordinary degree of focus
[28:13] over on that end
[28:16] um far end of diffuse awareness someone
[28:18] will get accused of being a ddhd here
[28:23] ADHD or however many numbers
[28:26] um but having it having trouble focusing
[28:30] um and it's just
[28:32] it has to do with the way the
[28:33] testosterone and estrogen affects the
[28:35] brain and we actually can cause this
[28:40] right so with more rest it's easier for
[28:44] both men and women to focus because rest
[28:47] builds testosterone and sleep is the
[28:50] best dress
[28:52] um
[28:52] but it's kind of a problem because
[28:55] if you don't have enough total
[28:57] testosterone you'll have trouble staying
[28:59] asleep so you'll have trouble making
[29:02] more testosterone so it's a good thing
[29:03] to get on board and fix for both men and
[29:06] women
[29:07] um on the opposite end of single focus
[29:09] is diffuse awareness which that's what I
[29:12] named it because it means diffuse means
[29:14] to spread in every direction
[29:16] and most women can relate to an acute
[29:20] awareness of everything in their
[29:22] environment
[29:24] and the the mental States the physical
[29:28] States the energy levels
[29:31] um any kind of irritation frustration or
[29:34] discomfort we're affected by and it'll
[29:39] pull our attention to do something about
[29:41] it this is this is why do not live with
[29:45] my boyfriend
[29:46] there's 90 of my steps between me and
[29:50] him and
[29:52] I can't hear him sneeze I can't hear him
[29:55] groan
[29:58] there is can't hear a stomach growl he's
[30:03] he's not he's not my job he's not my job
[30:06] until we choose to be together and then
[30:08] all those things that I pay attention to
[30:10] just get to overflow into loving on him
[30:15] um
[30:16] but as as I fuse awareness people we're
[30:20] likely to get overwhelmed
[30:22] so diffuse awareness can cause overwhelm
[30:25] single Focus can cause frustration
[30:27] especially you don't have what you need
[30:29] to produce the result you're committed
[30:32] to ah frustration goes through the roof
[30:35] and um
[30:38] am I answering your question I know you
[30:41] haven't I I'm just trying to think oh
[30:43] The Meta report yeah
[30:46] are you still aligned with the what you
[30:49] said in 2008
[30:51] um
[30:52] towards the focus the women are more
[30:55] towards the diffuse are you still
[30:56] aligning with that
[30:58] well definitely genetically
[31:02] um with the chromosome that kicks in in
[31:04] the 21st day of gestation
[31:07] um
[31:08] men tend to have 15 to 30 times more
[31:11] testosterone than women and it's jet
[31:14] fuel it's the fuel of accountability and
[31:18] um so yes I'm still very much aligned
[31:21] it's just incomplete it only works part
[31:23] of the time to interact with a woman in
[31:26] gathering mode only works when she's in
[31:28] gathering mode if she's in a productive
[31:32] committed state of mind which you can
[31:34] tell by how she moves her body how she
[31:36] uses language how she reacts how you
[31:38] come into the room
[31:40] um we teach all of that how do you tell
[31:42] the difference how do you support a
[31:44] woman depending on what state of mind
[31:46] how to how to
[31:49] um
[31:50] ever feel safe I'd ever feel appreciated
[31:52] depending on her state of mind so yes I
[31:56] still stand by that in the meta report
[32:00] um The Meta report has to do I mean a
[32:02] woman doesn't even have to leave her
[32:03] home to have a matter report but it's
[32:06] often what people get when they say how
[32:09] are you or if a woman says can you just
[32:11] listen she'll have all these things that
[32:14] she became aware of right out in the
[32:17] world or just in her day and she's full
[32:21] she ingested them and she's full and
[32:26] also the Instinct especially for out in
[32:28] the world the instinct is I've got to
[32:32] tell my tribe I've got to tell my family
[32:35] I've got to tell the people I trust what
[32:38] I saw out there so we don't miss out
[32:41] everybody needs to know about the sale
[32:44] everybody needs to know what's right
[32:48] everybody needs to know the shortages
[32:50] and the abundances and where to find
[32:53] things and so we report back on all
[32:56] these things that are I call it scan
[32:59] vision
[33:00] which has us taken an enormous amount of
[33:03] information what we can see just by
[33:06] scanning especially anything that's ugly
[33:09] or out of place or broken or dirty it
[33:13] will stand out
[33:15] and and we'll come back and we'll report
[33:17] on all those things that we noticed
[33:19] and
[33:22] most men are overwhelmed by that much
[33:24] detail and so one of the biggest things
[33:28] for both sides
[33:30] whatever side you're on I am an advocate
[33:33] for you have the right to set yourself
[33:36] up to win
[33:38] please honor yourself first and set
[33:41] yourself up to win so if a woman says
[33:44] can you just listen
[33:45] say no I can't just listen
[33:48] back to Allison says there's no such
[33:51] thing as just listening we're always
[33:53] listening with a question at the top of
[33:55] our mind is there a question you'd like
[33:57] me to have
[33:59] yes could you listen what's true for me
[34:03] okay
[34:05] could you listen what does she need from
[34:09] meek maybe you'll figure out how to help
[34:11] me could you listen
[34:14] what does she care about or what matters
[34:17] most to her all these alterations in
[34:19] listening we we work on in a course
[34:21] called Lux but we can't not filter
[34:26] we we're too perceptive there's too much
[34:28] information we have to filter and we
[34:31] filter with the question at the top of
[34:34] our mind and those questions determine
[34:37] our reality
[34:39] and changing those questions on purpose
[34:42] like normal instinctual questions are
[34:45] what do you need from me what does this
[34:47] have to do with me what's the point
[34:49] what's the problem
[34:52] and do I agree with you what do I think
[34:55] about that how do I feel about that
[34:57] those are normal ways that people listen
[34:59] and you can often tell how someone's
[35:02] listening because you're talking and the
[35:05] conversation they're having in their
[35:07] head
[35:08] their own mind produces a thought that
[35:12] that's so compelling they'll interrupt
[35:14] you and tell you the thought
[35:17] well I don't think that's true now you
[35:20] know they're listening what do I think
[35:21] about that
[35:23] I don't feel that way
[35:25] now you know that we're listening do I
[35:27] feel that way do I feel that way
[35:30] they interrupt you and tell you with
[35:32] well what I know about that is oh they
[35:35] were listening what do I know about that
[35:37] but oh I know about that
[35:38] in these ways of listening to each other
[35:41] is what produces so much of the
[35:44] disconnection like you're not hearing me
[35:46] at all you didn't hear a word I said why
[35:50] do I even bother talking
[35:51] and men and women both think this
[35:54] and so setting the person up honey could
[35:58] you like hold the trash I am full of
[36:02] everything I saw today please just hold
[36:04] the trash when I pause
[36:07] ask as if it's fascinating anything else
[36:11] and I'll just get all of this out of me
[36:15] and I have a dear friend whose husband
[36:18] would flood her with all things he
[36:22] wanted to tell her while she was working
[36:23] and then he wanted to have sex
[36:27] and I taught her to tell him I'm full
[36:30] and until I get this out of me I don't
[36:33] have any room for you in me
[36:37] also he's like okay I'm listening
[36:43] yeah you have to make things memorable
[36:46] and to the point where the other person
[36:48] so yeah the meta report we're compelled
[36:51] to give and we expect it to be
[36:54] remembered because it the survival of
[36:56] the tribe
[36:57] um depends upon it and most women can
[37:00] remember that level of detail and
[37:04] um and really been apologize I'm sorry
[37:07] if I told you this before
[37:09] it will it which is why we're stunned
[37:11] that men will tell us the same story
[37:13] over and over again
[37:14] as don't you remember you told that to
[37:16] me am I so insignificant
[37:19] but stories and meta reports are not
[37:23] even close meta reports are all about
[37:25] facts that must be remembered because
[37:27] we're going to die and stories this is a
[37:29] story it's at least part fiction just
[37:33] relax and enjoy
[37:37] you have a question
[37:39] no I have one all right now from
[37:42] that's all very practical but I have a
[37:44] very practical questions that I promised
[37:46] myself if I ever had some time with you
[37:47] I would ask you so okay how
[37:51] can you have if you if you see an
[37:53] argument coming or you end up in an
[37:55] argument how can you avoid two days of
[37:57] silent treatment
[38:00] how can you actually you know what would
[38:02] you do to help resolve an argument
[38:06] bring back the connection and peace how
[38:08] would you do that
[38:13] but I just I just did a a 10 hour C
[38:17] C on this
[38:19] um well
[38:20] the first we packaged them together
[38:24] so if you look for couples connecting
[38:26] through conflict
[38:29] um it will include the first two hours
[38:31] which are called do you disconnect with
[38:33] conflict which almost everybody
[38:36] disconnects with conflict just even the
[38:39] fear of a conflict
[38:40] they'll disconnect with the other person
[38:42] they'll disconnect it themselves they'll
[38:44] be all off kilter
[38:47] um
[38:47] so if I was gonna give you a synopsis of
[38:51] it
[38:53] which I really recommend this whether
[38:55] you're there's a couple called I me
[38:59] the ime couple can have a conflict at
[39:02] home all alone
[39:04] um and
[39:05] and it what matters is to distinguish
[39:08] what is the conflict over
[39:11] and it's usually all of a jumbles so we
[39:15] have conflicts over
[39:19] values like the the core of what matters
[39:22] to us their conflicts about that
[39:25] um we have conflicts over actual needs
[39:28] things that we require to be the people
[39:30] we're committed to being we have
[39:32] conflicts over preferences
[39:35] and which would seem funny to have a
[39:38] conflict over a preference but it's
[39:40] where disconnect happens and
[39:43] when we connect over preferences that's
[39:47] like we both like the same amount of
[39:49] salt on our food
[39:51] or we both butter our toast all the way
[39:53] down to the edge
[39:55] those kinds of preferences
[39:59] um and then if you take this right so
[40:03] values and needs and preferences then
[40:06] the source of the
[40:09] um
[40:12] the vitriol the source of the anger the
[40:16] source of the fury the source of that
[40:19] meanness
[40:22] um even that the attack that someone
[40:24] acts like you should be punished is that
[40:29] is that all of those things values and
[40:32] needs and preferences are all affected
[40:36] by expectations
[40:39] and expectations
[40:42] cause the most damage because they're
[40:46] usually unexamined and expectation is
[40:49] something that should happen
[40:52] and any decent person would do it
[40:55] and I shouldn't have I shouldn't have to
[40:57] ask I shouldn't have to remind I
[40:59] shouldn't have to tell you why I need it
[41:01] that's obvious I shouldn't even have to
[41:04] tell you anything
[41:05] any decent person would already have
[41:08] done this or any decent person would not
[41:11] have done this
[41:12] and the fact that you
[41:15] did didn't do it or did do it mean
[41:18] something incredibly significant like
[41:22] you don't love me you don't respect me
[41:25] you don't care about me
[41:29] you're you're an adversary you're an
[41:32] enemy you betrayed me the all the
[41:35] meaning that comes in with expectation
[41:38] is what has it take two days
[41:41] where if we can just see
[41:44] like by listening what matters to them
[41:47] oh this is a conflict over and I always
[41:51] use the word apparent
[41:53] Sandy this is an apparent conflict
[41:56] over values it seems It's overvalues
[41:59] let's get curious so what really matters
[42:01] to you in this situation
[42:04] Oh I thought What mattered to me
[42:07] mattered to you duh we usually project
[42:10] values under people so I was doing what
[42:13] matters to me and I completely
[42:14] disregarded What mattered to you
[42:17] I apologize I'm sorry for doing that
[42:20] do you think we could make an agreement
[42:22] that we actually would tell the other
[42:24] person what matters to us in each
[42:26] situation like what matters to you most
[42:28] about your free time this weekend what
[42:31] matters to you most about our next
[42:33] vacation what matters to you most that
[42:35] we do with the extra money we just got
[42:37] what matters to you most to spend money
[42:40] on when we don't have extra money what
[42:42] matters to you most like those kinds of
[42:45] questions and if we agree to tell each
[42:48] other that information
[42:50] human beings
[42:51] everything is shut down by don't ask and
[42:54] don't tell
[42:55] and and that is it's so deeply embedded
[42:59] in us do not ask and do not tell do not
[43:03] reveal a weakness do not reveal an
[43:04] ignorance
[43:07] so don't ask for what we need don't tell
[43:09] someone what we need don't ask what they
[43:11] need because we should have already
[43:12] figured it out
[43:14] so if you can see for example oh this is
[43:17] about values oh wait this it sounds like
[43:21] he needs something he's got a big
[43:23] project going on
[43:25] I think I think you might need something
[43:27] you don't normally need from me how can
[43:29] I support you better
[43:32] you can just cut right to the heart of
[43:33] it
[43:36] and preferences are interesting we're
[43:39] [Laughter]
[43:41] we're like two-year-olds
[43:44] um with preferences and I talk about
[43:47] that in the series if you want to do it
[43:49] it's 95 for the whole thing 10 hours
[43:51] worth of awesome information my
[43:53] boyfriend's actually doing it right now
[43:56] he is yeah so
[43:59] so yeah if you can see if you can if you
[44:04] can assume I would start that it that
[44:07] it's an apparent conflict right and then
[44:10] if you get curious and then Sandy the
[44:14] other thing is to use the word it seems
[44:17] like
[44:19] it seems like you're angry with me
[44:22] because of this could you verify or
[44:25] clarify and that word seems like
[44:29] has in it the willingness to be wrong
[44:33] it it has the questioning of perception
[44:37] in it
[44:38] and
[44:39] righteousness and us being convinced
[44:43] that our perceptions are accurate
[44:46] that causes probably 90 percent of the
[44:50] trouble
[44:52] so if we can I I don't know if I
[44:55] interpreted this the way you meant it it
[44:59] seemed like you were saying this did I
[45:02] get it right
[45:03] and then imaginary duct tape of your
[45:06] mouth and listen and you'll get to find
[45:08] out their reality and often our
[45:10] misinterpretations
[45:12] for for those of you read the Queen's
[45:14] code right
[45:16] Christine I assume that's what you were
[45:17] talking about yeah do you know Karen is
[45:20] pissed off at her husband for leaving
[45:22] the garage door open she's so pissed
[45:25] what a safety violation do you know who
[45:28] could get in the house and disrupt
[45:30] everything and I might come home to a
[45:32] stranger in the house and danger in the
[45:35] house and why did you leave the cave
[45:37] open to to all that danger and she's so
[45:41] mad at him for leaving the garage door
[45:43] open
[45:45] and then when she finally text him about
[45:48] it she finds out he opened the garage
[45:52] just before she got home to welcome her
[45:56] home
[45:56] [Laughter]
[45:59] which my husband used to do he would
[46:01] open the garage he'd anticipate when I
[46:03] was going to get home and he'd open the
[46:05] garage so I could just write just drive
[46:08] in and close the garage and receive I
[46:10] wouldn't even have to wait in the
[46:11] driveway for a Time
[46:16] so
[46:18] yeah I'm so close to the time trying to
[46:21] speak as much out of you in the time we
[46:22] have do you have a question I wanna
[46:24] there's a couple here but do you have
[46:26] one keeps keep squeezing yep okay yeah I
[46:31] I have many but there's two things that
[46:34] bringing up for me this one is
[46:37] and I don't know which one to ask first
[46:39] because I'm also aware of the time but
[46:41] how do you manage to have such a
[46:44] positive outlook on men and women
[46:46] because for me that's what's most
[46:49] amazing and seeing you live right now is
[46:51] just goodness coming out of you and this
[46:53] beautiful Outlook you have in life which
[46:55] I don't know if a lot of people share
[46:58] right
[46:59] people are hurt and dented and traumat
[47:02] traumatizing
[47:04] is there anything you can share so
[47:08] to kind of spread that Outlook and and
[47:11] people have happier days
[47:13] yeah sure
[47:15] um well I would say there's two parts
[47:19] um one is what I've already talked about
[47:22] in terms of
[47:24] cause and effect and false cause
[47:28] so
[47:32] the worst things that human beings do to
[47:35] each other
[47:37] are almost never conscious choices
[47:42] they're the result of instinct which
[47:45] generates impulse
[47:47] and
[47:49] they're the result of fear and
[47:52] frustration and fear that their
[47:54] frustration will never come to an end
[47:56] so
[47:58] it helps me just to see when somebody's
[48:02] being
[48:03] mean for example they're probably afraid
[48:08] um when somebody's
[48:10] uh like has to be the center of
[48:13] attention all the time that's someone
[48:15] who's really afraid
[48:17] and
[48:19] someone who doesn't bite their tongue
[48:22] who what they think
[48:25] always comes out of their mouth
[48:28] um they just haven't worked on a level
[48:30] of Consciousness to interrupt the limbic
[48:33] brain like cat catch it right the limbic
[48:38] brain's always a split second in front
[48:40] of the prefrontal cortex and you can
[48:42] actually feel the limbic brain if you
[48:45] pay attention it
[48:48] I first felt it going through an airport
[48:50] with plenty of water and a full bag of
[48:54] my food and every store selling water
[48:58] and every restaurant my brain literally
[49:01] tilted towards it in this impulse to get
[49:05] more food and water before getting into
[49:08] this Beast that was going to hurdle me
[49:10] through space but I got to see it like
[49:12] it just kept doing it there's never
[49:15] enough
[49:17] um which is another thing to know for
[49:19] human instincts there's never enough
[49:22] um enough is the choice of human spirit
[49:25] and
[49:27] so I mean our mission at our company is
[49:31] to to empower people to make choices
[49:34] from Human Spirit which can only happen
[49:38] from the awareness of what we're already
[49:39] compelled by
[49:41] so that's
[49:44] what has me get to see Beauty in in
[49:47] human beings and to forgive them
[49:51] um
[49:52] what human instinct does
[49:55] um and then we have another course on
[49:58] our website called Extreme freedom and
[50:01] it doesn't have any prerequisites it's
[50:04] not based on gender
[50:07] um it's everything I've discovered since
[50:10] I made the decision that I was going to
[50:13] be unrecognizable
[50:16] by my wounds
[50:18] and they that I'm not anything that I am
[50:22] because of some wound some injury some
[50:26] limiting conclusion about myself some
[50:28] objectification that I've made of myself
[50:31] or others so I do
[50:34] I believe in restoration I believe you
[50:37] can't really damage a human being and if
[50:40] we have the will to be healed which is I
[50:43] think 98 of what it takes with the will
[50:46] to be healed we'll find their way and
[50:49] almost any way will work and extreme
[50:52] Freedom has all these different ways
[50:56] um six different ways to heal ourselves
[50:58] and release stuff that doesn't serve us
[51:02] but it starts with distinguishing
[51:05] how much we get from our injuries how
[51:08] much we get from our trauma how much we
[51:11] get from our limiting conclusions they
[51:15] limit us on purpose and it keeps us safe
[51:17] to be free of those things
[51:19] that's risky and
[51:23] um
[51:25] so I I'm a huge believer in restoration
[51:29] and I
[51:30] and I pay attention to it pay attention
[51:32] to it a lot and in fact I do the Sedona
[51:35] Method three times a week with a partner
[51:38] we just release any old crap that got
[51:41] stuck
[51:43] so that would be the second half
[51:44] Christina
[51:46] thank you yeah thank you I mean we're
[51:49] all here for growth these Community is
[51:51] all about growth Sandy's done amazing
[51:53] work with his community
[51:56] um we're all about healing and we we do
[51:58] different methods we do a method called
[52:00] qec method and Sandy's method and
[52:02] there's mind detox and I I love that
[52:05] about when every time I see you
[52:08] it just looks so genuine and it's
[52:09] something I'd like to be
[52:11] when I grow up you know just not be so
[52:15] hurt and
[52:17] can I ask another question have you got
[52:19] three minutes so she left me very fast
[52:21] okay okay that's a good question well
[52:26] well no do you have one no but just I
[52:30] don't see and this is one of the things
[52:32] we don't see I well we do but I don't
[52:34] understand like sometimes I feel I'm
[52:36] just sharing a feeling and he
[52:38] experiences as criticizing and talking
[52:42] with other female friends I think it's a
[52:45] thing that happens a lot you know
[52:48] women Express their discomfort and men
[52:51] get hurt because it feels criticism and
[52:53] then I'm always like how am I supposed
[52:54] to express how I'm feeling if you're
[52:56] going to take it as a criticism so if
[52:59] you could give us like a little gold
[53:01] nugget around that what would it be
[53:03] okay
[53:05] well
[53:06] one of the first things
[53:09] um I was there were three men that I
[53:10] paid attention to in the beginning of
[53:12] studying men and one of the first things
[53:14] one of them said to me was he said men
[53:19] listen accused
[53:27] and and since he's your husband
[53:32] he holds himself accountable for
[53:35] protecting you from everything that's
[53:38] awful and to make you happy
[53:42] and so if you're expressing a feeling
[53:45] you're having that
[53:47] means you're not happy then he must have
[53:50] failed
[53:51] even if you didn't say he failed
[53:54] and
[53:57] does this resonate Sandy
[54:00] oh see yes absolutely yes
[54:03] I see your Spanish is coming along just
[54:06] fine no see me
[54:07] absolutely this was what you were saying
[54:10] the other day I watched in a YouTube
[54:12] video and it was about how when a man
[54:14] commits to relationship he's all in
[54:16] warts and all that moment in time and
[54:18] where she's still kind of deciding up
[54:20] until even
[54:21] maybe beyond the marriage the marriage
[54:24] the wedding day and and maybe never
[54:26] never right yeah but it's kind of like
[54:29] that you know I'm now responsible I'm
[54:31] taking you you know helping you I'm
[54:33] gonna make sure you're safe and
[54:34] protected and we're we're a success
[54:36] together
[54:37] and if that isn't the case I'm feeling
[54:40] somehow if you're feeling bad or
[54:42] whatever
[54:43] yeah
[54:45] well so so Christina I'm going to tell
[54:47] you what to do about it okay
[54:50] um first is before you tell him
[54:54] think about is there something that you
[54:56] need from him or something that he could
[54:58] provide for you that would help
[55:02] and start with that
[55:05] so in our curriculum I talked to her I
[55:09] texted the people in our curriculum
[55:10] eight and a half hours a month and on
[55:13] those calls I say before you give me
[55:15] information tell me what you want from
[55:17] me we're all working on supporting
[55:20] providers and I'm a provider so start
[55:22] with what you want from me before you
[55:24] give me any details so if you did that
[55:27] with Sandy Sandy I I just need you to
[55:31] hear me and if you could listen what's
[55:33] true for her and not take it on you this
[55:37] is not your fault this is not something
[55:40] you did or didn't do I just want you to
[55:42] know what it's like to be me right now
[55:45] can you do that
[55:47] and he'll have to give him a second to
[55:49] transition maybe a few seconds okay it's
[55:52] not my fault it's not my fault she just
[55:54] wants me here or what's true for her
[55:56] what's true fear
[55:57] okay
[55:59] make sure she's like you know he's got
[56:01] his tennis racket okay sir
[56:04] um and it also helps it seems like so
[56:08] when a woman says I feel like
[56:11] to a man he listens that is that that's
[56:15] his problem that he caused that that he
[56:18] did something wrong that you would feel
[56:20] that way and they also have a reaction I
[56:24] can't control your feelings so women we
[56:28] speak of our feelings as if they are a
[56:30] reflection of Truth and they are some of
[56:33] the time
[56:35] but we relate to them as if they're a
[56:37] reflection of Truth a hundred percent of
[56:39] the time
[56:40] and so we say I feel like you don't love
[56:42] me
[56:43] and to me I was like what the am I gonna
[56:46] do with that
[56:48] how do I change that and they're just I
[56:52] can't win they're overwhelmed by it but
[56:54] if you say like it seems like you don't
[56:56] love me
[56:58] what what makes it seem like that
[57:01] because that he can fix
[57:04] what I absolutely love you what makes
[57:07] you seem like I don't well when I was
[57:09] talking about my feelings yesterday you
[57:12] stopped paying attention and you you
[57:14] wandered you took a phone call in the
[57:17] middle of it and if you really loved me
[57:19] you wouldn't have done that I think
[57:21] maybe
[57:24] oh honey I'm so sorry I took that phone
[57:27] call
[57:31] could we make a deal that when you want
[57:32] to tell me about your feelings you
[57:34] you ask if I can give you all the
[57:36] attention that that deserves because I
[57:39] was expecting that phone call
[57:42] and you started talking about feelings
[57:45] and I was trapped do you think we could
[57:47] make a deal to do that
[57:49] so this is what I mean I talk about this
[57:52] in couples connect you through conflict
[57:55] I'm not dead until I'm glad it happened
[57:58] whatever it is that happened those two
[58:00] days you were talking about Sandy I'm
[58:02] not done until I am glad it happened
[58:04] okay let's take this apart get to the
[58:07] bottom of it make some agreements of
[58:09] ways to handle things differently write
[58:12] some notes to put on the fridge so we
[58:14] don't forget
[58:15] and let's be better off because this
[58:18] happened
[58:21] that I don't settle for being worse off
[58:24] ever I will not let my relationships
[58:28] with people be diminished
[58:30] no no no no no no we're upwards
[58:32] spiraling no downward into this work
[58:36] even though human instincts will drag us
[58:38] down into the sword every time
[58:43] yeah there's a book in for us I'm not
[58:46] done until I'm glad this happened that
[58:48] is amazing for everything
[58:51] everything
[58:53] therapy right there never everything wow
[58:56] what an amazing way to end
