Emptiness Is Not Nothingness: Interconnection and Unity

Loch Kelly

De Loch Kelly

Assistir · 6

Less than two minutes into a teaching that runs barely longer than a commute, Loch Kelly stops to correct a misreading that trips up many serious meditators. The awakened mind he describes is not a blank. Emptiness, in this framing, is not the absence of everything; it is the absence of separation. Awareness and appearance are not two things, and the mind that rests in that recognition does not go numb. It finds the sacred in form, sound, taste, and touch. The clip is brief, and it leaves several threads loose, so what follows works through its ideas on their own terms: why "empty" gets misheard as "nothing," why pure awareness can become a place to hide, and what the "one taste" he points to actually means.

Does emptiness in meditation mean nothingness?

The clip opens by naming the fear directly. If a person really rests in the awakened, non-egoic mind, the worry goes, then "suddenly everything becomes empty. We don't see, we don't feel anything, or we lose any kind of appreciation to life."

"it's not like suddenly everything becomes empty. We don't see, we don't feel anything, or we lose any kind of appreciation to life because we are in this kind of an idealistic stoic state of mind." (Excerpt from the video, 0:00)

That phrase, "idealistic stoic state of mind," describes a particular counterfeit of freedom. A person who has stepped back from their reactions can feel serene, but serenity bought by withdrawing from life is a kind of armor. Nothing can reach you because nothing is being met. The teaching separates that posture from the real thing.

The video's description offers an image that makes the distinction concrete. A tree is not separate from the sun, water, earth, and air that sustain it. Its lack of a separate, self-contained existence does not make it absent. It is made of its supports. Emptiness in this sense means interdependence: nothing stands alone, so nothing is cut off from what it depends on. The description extends the point to the sense of being a separate self, which can begin to soften into what it calls unity consciousness. A self that is interconnected is not a self that has vanished.

Why does the sacred show up through the senses?

The emotional center of the clip is a single line. Residing in the awakened mind, the teaching says, means "we are able to see the sacredness in everything." The second speaker's reply is a quick affirmation, and then a list that carries the weight: "Sacredness in form, in sound, in taste, in touch."

"we are able to see the sacredness in everything." (Excerpt from the video, 0:19)

The sequence the teaching draws is a movement from one kind of mind to another. The first is the conditioned mind, organized around threat, preference, and a story about who is having the experience. The second is what the clip calls unconditioned pure awareness. In that second mode, the speaker says, a person is "free of fear" and can access a dimension that is "unimpeded." The sensory world does not get less vivid in that freedom. It gets less defended against. Sound stops being noise to manage and becomes sound. This is the practical payoff that separates the teaching from a purely intellectual idea of emptiness: the test is whether the world gets more alive, not less.

What goes wrong when people stay in pure awareness?

The clip identifies a second error, and it is subtler than the first. Some people, the speaker notes, do not stop at stoicism. They settle into pure awareness in a "detached, dissociated way," as if nondual awareness were the destination.

"some people also kind of hang out almost not even in a stoic, but almost in a detached uh dissociated way in pure awareness as if non-dual awareness is the end." (Excerpt from the video, 0:48)

The sketch that follows is almost comic: "I'm in awareness, there's nobody here named Locke, there's no self, there's just awareness, there's no fear, and I'll just walk around like this." The problem is not that the self-description is false. The problem is that it is incomplete in a way that has consequences. A person who has dropped the self-story but dropped the world along with it has not woken into unity. They have stepped out of the room and called the empty room enlightenment. Freedom from a self that suffers is not the same as participation in a life that includes suffering, relationship, and beauty.

For readers who have spent time with contemplative traditions, this will sound familiar. Many traditions warn that awareness can be mistaken for a place to rest rather than a view from which to live. The clip puts the warning in plain speech and does not dress it up.

What is "one taste," and why is awareness not separate from appearance?

The teaching then names what it calls the next realization. "The fullness is the one taste." The phrase "one taste" appears in various nondual traditions to point to a single quality underlying every experience, pleasant or painful, gross or refined. The clip uses it without elaborating on its tradition, so the most faithful reading stays close to what it says: the fullness of the awakened mind is not a flavor added to pure awareness. It is what pure awareness is when it is not treated as separate from what appears.

"the non-dual is not just pure awareness, but it is awareness and appearance. It is awareness and phenomena are not two like ocean and wave." (Excerpt from the video, 1:16 to 1:24)

The ocean and wave image is the clearest handle in the clip. A wave is not a separate substance laid on top of the ocean. It is the ocean moving in a particular shape, for a particular span of time, and then returning. Asking whether the wave is "really" separate from the ocean misses the point; it is the ocean appearing as wave. Applied to experience, the teaching suggests that awareness is not an empty container that thoughts, sensations, and sounds pass through. Those appearances are awareness showing up in form. Emptiness, understood this way, is not the lack of waves. It is the recognition that waves and water are not two things.

This is why the first error, the empty and numb state, is a misunderstanding of emptiness, and why the second error, the detached pure awareness, is a partial recognition. Each takes one half of the picture and calls it whole. The teaching asks for both at once: awareness that is open and unafraid, and appearance that is fully felt.

How can you test this idea in ordinary life?

The clip does not prescribe a method, and it would be a misreading to invent one and attribute it to the teacher. As a reader's check, though, the teaching's own distinctions suggest a simple question to bring to a quiet moment. When the sense of a separate self loosens, does the world become more vivid and more connected, or more distant and unreal? If the answer is distance, the clip's warning applies. If the answer is fuller sensation and a sense of being supported by what surrounds you, the tree image from the video's description is a reasonable way to name what is happening.

Where to go from here

This clip is a fragment, and it is best read as a doorway rather than a complete teaching. Loch Kelly's longer work on emptiness, nondual awareness, and the Effortless Mindfulness approach is available through his site at lochkelly.org, including a books and resources page and the Mindful Glimpses app. Those are the places to see how these distinctions are developed beyond a two-minute exchange. The core lesson of this clip is compact enough to carry into any day: emptiness is not nothing, pure awareness is not a hiding place, and the one taste is the sound of the ocean and the wave being the same water.

In this teaching, Loch Kelly says no. Emptiness refers to the absence of separation and the interdependence of all things, like a tree that is not separate from the sun, water, earth, and air. The awakened mind does not go numb or lose appreciation for life.
The video's description frames unity consciousness as a deeper experience that opens when the sense of being a separate self begins to soften. It is not the disappearance of the self into nothing, but a recognition of connection with everything that supports life.
The clip uses 'one taste' to describe the fullness that arises when awareness is recognized as not separate from appearance. The phrase comes from various nondual traditions and points to a single quality underlying all experience, though the clip does not elaborate on its history.
The clip warns against treating pure awareness as the final destination. Some people settle into a detached, dissociated state as if non-dual awareness were the end, but the teaching points to a fuller realization in which awareness and phenomena are experienced together.
The teaching describes a detached, dissociated state as a partial recognition that drops the world along with the self-story. Non-dual awareness, by contrast, stays open to sensory life, finding the sacred in form, sound, taste, and touch without fear.
The clip says awareness and phenomena are not two, like ocean and wave. A wave is the ocean moving in a particular shape, not a separate substance, so thoughts and sensations are awareness appearing in form rather than objects floating in an empty container.
