Where This Album Sits in Suzanne Sterling's Arc

Wyrd Vibrations: Future Sounds of Paganism from Reclaiming Tradition arrived on 15 February 2023 as a 15-track compilation. It belongs to the earth-based strand of Suzanne Sterling's work, the one that grows out of her more than 25 years with the International Reclaiming Community, where she has co-created public ritual and trained teachers in earth-based spirituality. Her best-known public identity is as a kirtan leader rooted in bhakti. This record shows the other side of her practice, the ritual room as opposed to the devotional stage.

The word "compilation" matters. This is not a solo statement in the way a studio album would be. The catalogue also includes Sacred Well: Ritual Music from Reclaiming and Deep Repose: Meditation Music from Reclaiming and Friends, and Wyrd Vibrations sits alongside them as a gathering of community music. Specific contributors are not named in the information available, so I won't name any. Check the Spotify credits for who sings what.

Sonic Character

Suzanne Sterling's music is built around the human voice, rhythm and repetition rather than dense orchestration, and that is the right frame for approaching this album. Expect phrases that return and settle rather than build to a climax. The voice is the central instrument, and the production tends to serve chant and breath rather than compete with them.

The subtitle promises "future sounds," which suggests the tradition is being pushed forward rather than preserved under glass. I can't give you a track-by-track inventory of instruments, because the available record doesn't include one. What can be said is that the pacing across her work favors immersion over spectacle, and the mood of a ritual-oriented compilation is communal: voices meant to be joined, not merely heard. If you want fast tempos or layered electronic arrangements, this is not that. The material leans spare and slow-moving.

Signature Tracks

Here I have to be honest about a limit. The facts available do not include the album's track list, and I won't invent titles. The catalogue notes also say there are no track-by-track descriptions, so the most useful advice is practical.

  • Open the Spotify listing first. The album page (linked in the references below) shows all 15 titles and the credits.
  • Listen for the opening and closing tracks. On ritual-oriented records, these tend to work as thresholds: one calls the room in, the other lets it go. Notice which tracks seem to do that job here.
  • Mark the ones that invite you to sing. Repetition-based pieces are where Sterling's participatory approach shows most clearly. A track that makes you want to hum along is doing what her work is designed to do.

After a first pass, name your own three favorites. For a compilation of this kind, that is more honest than any list handed down in advance.

Place in the Tradition

Sterling's work sits primarily within bhakti, the Indian devotional path in which song and repeated sacred names become a direct route to the divine. This album is not that strand. It represents the second one running alongside it: earth-based spirituality shaped by the Reclaiming community. Her bio also lists shamanism and ceremonies among her subjects, so her lineage is better read as a set of practices than a single guru line. No formal teacher succession is named, and none should be assumed.

What connects the two strands is the conviction at the center of her teaching: that the sacred lives in ordinary singing, and that your voice is the strongest tool you have. Wyrd Vibrations applies that conviction to pagan ritual music, with a forward-looking title. It is closer to devotional and ritual music than to ambient or meditation music, though it shares the ambient tradition's patience.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This album is best suited to listeners already comfortable with pagan and Reclaiming-influenced frames. The spiritual language and ceremony are central, not decorative, so skeptics of ritual will find it a harder fit. It will land hardest for someone who practices, or is curious about, earth-based ritual and wants music that belongs to a community rather than to a single performer.

Life moments that suit it: marking a season, preparing a gathering, closing a difficult week with something communal, or sitting with questions of belonging and renewal. Listeners wanting a purely secular or ambient sound would be better served by the Chill Yoga Music or Trip Tracks compilations. Those who prefer a polished studio artist may also be disappointed, since Sterling's reputation rests on practice, community and live ritual rather than chart presence.

How to Listen Closely

Listen in the evening, ideally alone at first. Use headphones for the first full pass so you can follow individual voices and the way phrases return. Resist skipping: repetition is the point, and the effect comes from staying with a phrase rather than waiting for it to resolve.

On a second listen, change the setting. Play it with others, or in a space you have set apart for ritual, and sing along where the music invites it. Because the album is oriented toward group ritual, it may reveal more in company than in solitude. Before using any track in a ceremony or class, preview it on Spotify so you know how it moves.
