Imagine spending five days in one of the world's most sacred healing sanctuaries—perched on cliffs above the Pacific Ocean in Big Sur—learning to rewire your heart toward unconditional acceptance, joy, and belonging. This transformative yoga retreat at Esalen Institute invites you into the Brahmavihārās, the classical Buddhist practices known as the divine abodes or four immeasurables. Rather than chasing transcendence or escape, this workshop meets you exactly where you are: in your complexity, your doubts, your tender places. Through guided meditation, embodied movement, breathwork, and somatic practice, you'll cultivate loving-kindness (metta), compassion (karuna), sympathetic joy (mudita), and equanimity (upekka)—four doorways to living with greater freedom, presence, and authentic connection.
This is not a retreat that asks you to transcend your humanity. It's one that teaches you to inhabit it more fully. Over five days, you'll move through a carefully woven curriculum that honors both yogic and Buddhist wisdom traditions, supported by experienced faculty who understand the real obstacles—self-doubt, resentment, armor around the heart—that keep seekers separated from their own capacity for love. Expect guided meditations at sunrise, gentle yet powerful yoga flows, live music and poetry, shadow work, journaling, and intimate ritual. Expect communal meals, conversations that matter, and plenty of time to rest in Esalen's legendary hot springs and wild coastal landscape. By the end, you'll leave with practical tools, genuine insight, and a renewed sense of belonging to yourself and the world.
What to Expect
You'll begin each day with meditation and movement as the sun rises over the Pacific. Morning sessions alternate between formal sitting practice and yoga that meets your body with kindness and attention. Afternoons weave in storytelling, breathwork, somatic practices, and shadow work—inviting you to release what no longer serves and reconnect with the heart's boundless capacity. Evenings gather the group around shared meals, live music, poetry, and ritual in community. Throughout, you have access to Esalen's natural hot springs, gardens, and clifftop trails for personal reflection and integration. The experience is designed to be both rigorous and nourishing, both introspective and deeply relational.
