What if the simple act of seeing—truly looking at the world without judgment—could unlock a wellspring of creativity you thought you'd lost? Creating Hope is a five-day immersion in drawing and writing as meditation, led by artist and environmental social worker Joanne Case at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY. Taking place September 20–24, 2026, this retreat invites you to reconnect with your innate creative capacity through paired practices rooted in Frederick Franck's philosophy of seeing as a spiritual discipline. Whether you've never drawn a line or written a sentence, you'll discover that creativity isn't about talent—it's about presence, perception, and permission.
In our image-saturated, digitally tethered world, we've grown accustomed to consuming the world rather than witnessing it. This retreat offers a sanctuary to reverse that pattern. Away from screens and distraction, you'll spend mornings in observational drawing—capturing the subtle truth of natural forms, still life, and human faces—and afternoons translating emotional truth into words, where authenticity matters far more than grammar or polish. By retreat's end, you won't just have filled pages; you'll have recovered a way of seeing and expressing that feels genuinely yours.
What to Expect
Mornings ground you in the meditative act of drawing. You'll work with natural subjects, still life arrangements, and portraiture, training your eye and hand to slow down and witness detail with fresh attention. These sessions aren't about producing "good" drawings—they're about what drawing does to how you see.
Afternoons shift toward intuitive writing, where emotional truth takes precedence over technical skill. You'll explore what wants to emerge through words, without the pressure of performance or perfection. The retreat deliberately shelters you from digital distraction, creating conditions for images and words to surface with less internal resistance. Joanne cultivates what Franck called the "unspoiled core"—that place in each person where genuine expression lives, untouched by years of judgment or self-editing. The philosophy throughout is process over product: you're building a sustainable, meditative practice rooted in seeing clearly and translating perception onto the page.
