[0:00] Welcome everyone.
[0:02] I am I'm appreciative of Karen
[0:07] supporting me and um filling the very
[0:10] big shoes of Eric uh who does so much
[0:13] for this community.
[0:15] And so I just want to say thank you to
[0:18] Karen, but I also am so very grateful to
[0:23] each of you for joining us to create
[0:26] this practice. Um this evening I am uh
[0:30] much in need of practice and as I we
[0:34] were u doing the tech preparation and
[0:37] getting the music together and I was
[0:39] listening to the opening music
[0:42] I was praying to medicine Buddha to give
[0:46] each person here this evening and each
[0:49] person who listens to the recording um
[0:52] whatever they need from medicine Buddha.
[0:55] And I felt such a sweet presence not
[0:58] just of medicine Buddha but of the
[1:01] earth. Um, I am
[1:05] uh I don't know if I'm in need of refuge
[1:07] because nothing everything is good in my
[1:10] life, but I definitely am in want of
[1:13] refuge because I have just been feeling
[1:17] anxious and um unggrounded and
[1:22] um some um pressure, some self-created
[1:26] pressure around um not doing enough, not
[1:30] getting enough done.
[1:33] And so I invite you to kind of feel into
[1:38] what your own needs are and so that we,
[1:41] you know, we can
[1:43] uh participate in the practice and
[1:46] co-create with medicine Buddha what we
[1:49] need as a community and what if you have
[1:56] energy to offer you offer it for the
[2:01] liberation. of all beings and if you
[2:04] need energy the earth
[2:08] medicine Buddha and the Sana along with
[2:12] Lamarad's other four homecomings will
[2:16] you know support us all in that
[2:18] practice.
[2:21] So I see in the chat Laura coming from
[2:25] Melbourne. Welcome. Um the um
[2:31] the practice tonight is community-led.
[2:35] Lamarad I think we'll be back next week.
[2:39] Um but every week is different even when
[2:43] Lamarad is here. Uh every week is
[2:46] different. So I hope that the practice
[2:48] supports you um this this evening with
[2:52] whatever
[2:54] um your your needs are. Medicine Buddha
[2:58] is for me is a sweet, nurturing,
[3:02] supportive practice
[3:04] and
[3:07] the um I come from a well I come from a
[3:11] lot of backgrounds but some uh but early
[3:14] my early upbringing was in the Methodist
[3:17] church the AM church and then I was a
[3:20] practicing pagan for many years. Um
[3:24] between that I got involved in um kind
[3:27] of new age spirituality
[3:29] and um and then you know I met I came in
[3:33] contact with Lamarad. So I still you
[3:36] know do a lot of eclectic practices
[3:40] but what um medicine Buddha is that part
[3:46] of God that
[3:50] um is you know um knows every blade of
[3:53] brass and every sparrow
[3:56] and knows the cares of our heart better
[3:59] than we do and is generous in response.
[4:04] respon to whatever um our needs are.
[4:10] And so
[4:12] I just invite you to kind of settle into
[4:15] the space and give yourself some
[4:19] appreciation for being here
[4:22] because it's a gift that you give get to
[4:25] give yourself to be in practice um with
[4:28] community
[4:30] and this is such a sweet and nurturing
[4:32] and supportive community.
[4:37] So, uh,
[4:40] let your breath
[4:43] deepen and slow down. Let your shoulders
[4:46] drop
[4:48] and become aware of your seat
[4:51] and or the the bed you're laying in or
[4:55] the floor you're sitting on. Wherever
[4:58] your body
[5:00] is in contact with an extension of the
[5:04] earth that supports you,
[5:07] just let
[5:09] yourself feel that support. You know,
[5:13] gravity is a wonderful thing. We can't
[5:15] fall off the earth. We We are always
[5:19] held and we're held in such gentleness
[5:24] and held with such consistency
[5:28] that
[5:30] Yeah. I I consider that
[5:33] a message
[5:36] of Yeah. of of the divine that
[5:40] the divine energies
[5:43] are always
[5:45] present and always supporting us and
[5:48] always serving us. And no matter what is
[5:53] going on in the world, or even in our
[5:56] own bodies,
[5:58] in our homes,
[6:02] there are some consistencies, some
[6:04] consistent
[6:07] nurturing that's available.
[6:10] And in Buddhism, you know, we talk about
[6:13] the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sana
[6:18] that are always available to us, always
[6:22] there for us. And um we refer to these
[6:25] as as um
[6:29] uh areas of refuge, opportunities for
[6:31] refuge. And that's the energy that I am
[6:37] bringing to the practice tonight and
[6:40] creating in my practice tonight and
[6:44] praying that all the Buddhas and all the
[6:49] bene all our benefactors
[6:52] including my ancestors and yours uh the
[6:55] the nurturing supportive ancestors that
[6:57] we have. I'm my prayer is that
[7:01] all of the all of the universe
[7:06] come together
[7:08] to pour out
[7:11] whatever it is that this community needs
[7:14] in this time
[7:17] and as we as we are poured into
[7:22] once um Lamarat always says don't don't
[7:25] give out of your deficit um you know
[7:28] fill fill yourself up first and then
[7:30] serve out of your overflow. So let us be
[7:34] filled and if we get reach the point of
[7:37] overflow, let us pour that into the
[7:39] world for the liberation of all beings.
[7:44] As parts of this sa we have a common
[7:48] intention and that intention is the
[7:51] liberation
[7:53] of all beings
[7:56] and all phenomena.
[8:00] And that includes us. Sometimes we okay
[8:04] sometimes I get so busy trying to serve
[8:09] and help and uh support the liberation
[8:13] of others
[8:15] that I neglect my own care
[8:20] and that is not divine order. We have to
[8:26] be in a place of abundance
[8:31] before we can offer abundance to others.
[8:34] We have to be in a place of liberation
[8:38] before we can effectively support
[8:41] liberation for others.
[8:44] And so the purpose of our practice
[8:47] tonight is to you know to get free and
[8:51] to support each other in getting free
[8:54] and to support all beings in getting
[8:56] free.
[9:00] So um Karen has posted in the chat the
[9:04] prayer document. Go ahead. If you have
[9:07] prayers,
[9:09] um if you have needs, if you have people
[9:11] that you know that have needs, as we all
[9:14] do, um you can put those in the prayer
[9:17] document and we'll come back um to it as
[9:20] a community and read those prayers
[9:24] aloud,
[9:26] but also don't stress over it because
[9:30] Medicine Buddha knows your prayers and
[9:33] your intentions. So you can you can
[9:37] whisper your prayers, you can think your
[9:39] prayers, you can however you
[9:45] set the intention of offering care to
[9:49] yourself or to others, those prayers are
[9:53] received. Um, medicine Buddha is not a
[9:56] control freak as I can sometimes be
[9:59] about how we um come, how we come with
[10:02] our request, how we come with our needs.
[10:07] Medicine Buddha um to me is like the
[10:10] most generous, nurturing
[10:14] um divine mother that any of us could
[10:16] have. And so I um I just open myself up
[10:22] to that care tonight.
[10:26] And I'm going to start Karen if you'll
[10:28] put the first mantra into the chat. Our
[10:31] first mantra is a mantra of
[10:36] um calling for the attention of medicine
[10:38] Buddha. It translates to medicine
[10:41] Buddha. I pray that you know and look
[10:44] upon me now. Um not because medicine
[10:47] Buddha is ever not looking but because
[10:50] we are not always conscious that we are
[10:54] being looked upon by medicine Buddha. So
[10:58] the mantra is a supplication to medicine
[11:01] Buddha but it's also an acknowledgment
[11:05] of our
[11:08] uh always being under our being under
[11:11] the gaze the loving nurturing gaze of
[11:14] medicine Buddha.
[11:16] So following Lamar's
[11:19] um practice, I'm going to start with Om
[11:23] and then repeat this mantra three times.
[11:27] And you have um you have infinite
[11:30] opportunities to practice uh in whatever
[11:34] method uh works for you. You can say the
[11:37] mantra with me. You can listen to the
[11:40] mantra. You can read the mantra. You can
[11:44] close your eyes and tune the mantra out
[11:47] entirely.
[11:49] Um, and all of those are ways of
[11:53] participating
[11:54] in this community practice.
[12:00] So breathing together in
[12:25] Oh
[12:26] my
[12:29] king
[12:30] know
[12:33] so hard
[12:46] No.
[12:50] Oh
[13:00] my s
[13:03] king
[13:06] know
[13:08] so
[13:10] Ah.
[13:29] And if you you can always you can keep
[13:32] your eyes open. You can close your eyes
[13:35] during practice. You can visualize or
[13:39] not.
[13:40] But uh if you do visualize,
[13:43] see medicine Buddha
[13:46] joining you in your space,
[13:50] reaching out to place a hand on your
[13:52] heart,
[13:55] connecting,
[13:57] pouring love and compassion
[14:02] generously into your heart.
[14:07] And feel that light
[14:10] and love
[14:12] flowing from your bar from your heart
[14:15] through your body.
[14:20] Filling up your heart.
[14:26] Filling up your body.
[14:37] Medicine Buddha may even move into your
[14:41] body
[14:46] possibly first through your heart and
[14:50] then filling your body
[14:53] so that there is no separation
[14:55] between you and medicine. Buddha
[15:07] Just feeling all the yummy nurturing in
[15:09] every cell of your body.
[15:13] Releasing any tension. Letting go of any
[15:16] tightness, any discomfort,
[15:20] any pain.
[15:26] into your body is a body of light.
[15:31] The light of medicine Buddha shining out
[15:34] of you.
[15:38] Filling this Zoom room cyberspace
[15:42] through the
[15:44] connections of spirit and the magic of
[15:47] technology.
[15:50] Or maybe that's the connections of
[15:51] technology and the magic of spirit.
[15:56] Okay, maybe both. And just just um feel
[16:00] that deliciousness
[16:03] as we move into the main mantra.
[16:10] The main mantra translates like this. I
[16:14] pray for the end of pain and suffering
[16:17] and the root of pain and suffering.
[16:20] And I release the energy of this prayer
[16:23] out to all the worlds so that we all may
[16:26] be liberated.
[16:30] And what makes it clearer for me is to
[16:33] say it this way like this. I pray for
[16:36] the end of pain and suffering and the
[16:39] end of the root of pain and suffering.
[16:43] And I release the energy of this prayer
[16:46] out to all the worlds so that we all may
[16:50] be liberated.
[16:56] And I am going to recite the mantra
[17:00] several times. But then I'm going to um
[17:03] leave some space for silence
[17:07] so that you can work with whatever
[17:09] aspect of this practice is um serving
[17:12] you, but also so that I can rest my
[17:16] voice. I didn't notice until I started
[17:18] that I've got a little sore throat going
[17:20] on myself. So,
[17:23] we're going to start with Om again and
[17:27] chant the mantra.
[17:29] I'm going to chant it several times and
[17:32] then there will be some silence
[17:36] and I'll come back and say the mantra
[17:40] three times right before we um break and
[17:45] move into the prayers
[17:48] and we'll read the prayers aloud. So you
[17:51] have continued opportunity to enter
[17:54] prayers in the prayer document.
[17:56] Um I would suggest you go ahead and do
[17:59] that early and the practice so that you
[18:01] can let yourself have the most
[18:04] uninrupted
[18:06] time practice time to just receive.
[18:19] Oh,
[18:33] be
[18:36] ramb.
[18:42] Besum
[19:09] got So
[19:12] be
[19:16] gota
[19:28] be
[19:32] gota
[19:35] Bez
[19:46] got so
[20:05] Bez
[20:15] got so
[20:25] beh.
[20:32] Bez
[20:58] raas. I got
[21:01] so
[21:31] You may Continue reciting the mantra
[21:35] if that supports you.
[21:43] Or you can take this time
[21:46] to feel and be with medicine Buddha.
[21:54] Or you can take this time
[21:56] to do something else
[21:59] that supports you in your practice.
[22:12] And whatever it is,
[22:15] let it be done in love,
[22:18] light,
[22:20] and with the intention of liberation for
[22:23] yourself and all beings.
[26:28] Big
[26:32] my big
[26:48] I be
[26:50] kind
[26:54] of
[26:56] so
[27:07] And let us turn to the prayer document
[27:10] and raise our prayers to Medicine
[27:13] Buddha.
[27:45] I'll read the prayers out loud and
[27:48] you're welcome to read along with me on
[27:49] the dock or to um just listen or to
[27:53] continue uh praying in whatever way
[27:57] supports your practice.
[28:00] Prayers that I can overcome my mental
[28:02] health difficulties and financial

[34:28] um and remember that we have a place in
[34:33] the world and in this sa.
[34:37] Returning to the mantra briefly,
[34:55] Razum got
[35:04] so
[35:11] hot.
[35:16] Oh my go.
[35:47] M
[35:49] got
[36:00] mum
[36:02] got so
[36:06] mum
[36:08] got so hot
[36:17] KZ
[36:38] mi
[36:40] raza
[36:42] got soul. Oh,
[37:00] I see the questions in the chat. Uh
[37:02] let's do Shanta Diva's prayer and
[37:05] dedicate our merit and then we will have
[37:08] take a little community time. the um
[37:14] um so
[37:17] um and for those of you who um may be
[37:19] new here, I I only know that one person
[37:22] put in the chat this was their first
[37:24] time, but um by the way of dedicating
[37:26] the merit of our practice tonight
[37:29] um we offer Shanta Diva's prayer um
[37:33] three times and so
[37:36] >> Sharon I I've had technical difficulties
[37:38] so I put Shanti Davis prayer at the end
[37:41] of the Google doc. So, everyone should
[37:43] be able to access the Google doc and
[37:45] it's at the end of today's t today's
[37:48] doc.
[37:49] >> Thank you.
[37:58] >> So, at the end of the prayer doc prayer,
[38:01] do we have do we want to have anyone who
[38:04] wants to um recite it? This can be a
[38:08] shared community activity if you would
[38:10] like. Just raise your hand
[38:16] or I can just read it three times and
[38:19] you can follow. Oh, there it is. Carol
[38:22] put it in the chat even. Um so, um I can
[38:27] read it three through three times and
[38:30] Oh, here we come. Um, so we have Paul
[38:33] first, Svena second,
[38:38] and I'll take the last leg. Go ahead,
[38:41] Paul.
[38:56] >> Can you get come off mute?
[38:58] >> Try again, Paula. I think you can do it
[39:00] now.
[39:02] >> There it is. Thank you.
[39:06] >> May I be a protector to those without
[39:08] protection, a leader for those who
[39:10] journey,
[39:12] >> a bridge, a passage for all those
[39:14] desiring them further short. May the
[39:16] pain of every living creature be
[39:19] completely cleared away. May I be the
[39:21] doctor and the medicine and may I be the
[39:23] nurse for all sick beings in the world
[39:25] until everyone is healed just like space
[39:28] and the great elements such as earth.
[39:29] May I always support the life of all the
[39:31] boundless creatures and until they pass
[39:34] from pain. I think we change it but I
[39:37] can't remember it. May I also be the
[39:38] source of life for all the realms of
[39:40] endless beings that reach to the ends of
[39:42] space.
[39:46] Excuse
[39:51] me. May I be a protector to those
[39:54] without protection, a teach a leader for
[39:57] those who journey, and a boat, a bridge,
[40:00] a passage for those desiring the further
[40:03] shore. May the pain of every living
[40:05] creature,
[40:09] excuse me,
[40:11] be completely cleared away. May I be the
[40:14] doctor.
[40:16] and the medicine. And may I be the nurse
[40:20] for all sick beings,
[40:22] excuse me,
[40:26] in the world until everyone is healed,
[40:29] just like space and the great elements
[40:31] such as earth.
[40:35] May I always support the life of all the
[40:38] boundless creatures
[40:42] up and take a drink when you
[40:45] I'm sorry. Yes.
[40:48] >> Okay. No, no apology needed.
[40:52] >> Um I think I can finish. Thank you.
[40:56] >> Okay.
[40:57] >> May I always support the life of all the
[41:00] boundless creatures and until they pass
[41:03] through pain, may I also be the source
[41:06] of life for all the realms of endless
[41:08] beings that reach into the ends of
[41:11] space.
[41:13] May I be a protector to those without
[41:15] protection, a leader for those who
[41:18] journey, and a boat, a bridge, a passage
[41:21] for those desiring the further shore.
[41:23] May the pain of every living creature be
[41:25] completely cleared away. May I be the
[41:28] doctor and the medicine, and may I be
[41:30] the nurse for all sick beings in the
[41:32] world until everyone is healed. Just
[41:35] like space and the great elements such
[41:37] as earth, may I always support the life
[41:40] of all the boundless creatures. And
[41:42] until they pass away from pain, may I
[41:44] also be the source of life for all the
[41:47] realms of endless beings that reach into
[41:50] the ends of space.
[41:52] Thank you everyone for your practice.
[41:56] Um if you need to leave, um you can. Um
[41:58] we're going to be here for just a couple
[42:00] of more minutes. And SA I just want to
[42:03] say you know um suffering is not
[42:06] required in the practice. So so um don't
[42:10] you you don't owe apology. I think the
[42:13] whole community appreciates you uh
[42:16] taking
[42:18] a drink and take care of yourself. I um
[42:21] yeah I certainly didn't want you to to
[42:23] struggle on my behalf to
[42:25] >> Oh no no I I was hoping it just overcame
[42:28] me on that. Thank you. I know that
[42:30] happened early.
[42:33] >> Oh, in the chat a couple of people asked
[42:36] about the P.
[42:43] >> Oh, you got muted Sharon.
[42:57] Let's give her a minute in case she
[42:59] disconnected
[43:02] accidentally,
[43:10] huh?
[43:14] Oh, her computer shut down.
[43:19] She's going to try to be back though. It
[43:22] maybe, you know, maybe it ran out of
[43:24] power and she has to plug it in or
[43:25] something. It's happened to all of us.
[43:29] So, we can just wait a minute. But, I
[43:30] just want to uh say like Eric always
[43:33] does, if this offering supports your
[43:36] practice, uh there's an easy way to
[43:38] donate um to this work. And also um
[43:44] these two things coming up this weekend.
[43:46] Most of us are not near Atlanta, but if
[43:48] you are near Atlanta, what a great thing
[43:50] to do on October 31st. Spend it with
[43:52] Lamarad.
[43:54] And um and Sunday is um a very beautiful
[43:59] offering um that's just right in sync
[44:02] with All Souls Day, which Sunday is
[44:04] November 1st. Someone pointed out that
[44:07] today is the full moon, which is really
[44:08] cool. Um
[44:11] and uh there was one more thing that I
[44:13] forgot. And she's here. She's back.
[44:16] Okay. Okay. Great. Great.
[44:21] Yeah. She's going to tell us about the
[44:23] picture now. She's coming in. Oh, it's
[44:26] also Sam Hayne in the Irish pagan
[44:28] tradition. That's really cool.
[44:31] Sunday.
[44:32] >> My apologies. I my laptop slipped off
[44:35] its little riser and when it sits flat
[44:38] down on a soft surface it overheats and
[44:41] so it um just uh decided to take a
[44:44] little break.
[44:45] >> We were fine.
[44:47] >> The um uh the picture is um and some of
[44:53] you may have heard this before because
[44:54] I've had it up most of this month. Lamar
[44:56] Rod um calls October Ancestor Month. And
[45:01] so and I celebrate Ancestor Month twice
[45:04] a year. I celebrate in June during Black
[45:06] History Month and I celebrate again in
[45:08] October. And so these are my
[45:12] maternal greatgrandparents.
[45:15] Mo I know a lot about my dad's family.
[45:18] Um one of my cousins has traced our
[45:20] lineage back to an enslaved woman named
[45:23] Tina. But I know less about my mother's
[45:26] family. So this October, I've been
[45:28] focusing on my mother's side of the
[45:30] family. And this is Tom and Emma
[45:33] Bigalow. They were born around the turn
[45:36] of the century. Uh they had seven
[45:38] children, five boys and two girls. My
[45:42] grandmother was one of the girls. And
[45:45] there's, you know, long stories about u
[45:48] her. My mother described him as the
[45:52] meanest man in the world and um and I
[45:56] have in my ancestor work um um developed
[46:01] some compassion for him. Yeah. As a you
[46:05] know as a black man who probably knew
[46:08] people who had been enslaved and who was
[46:10] struggling as a workingclass head of
[46:13] household to provide for a family. And
[46:17] my mother's family was poor. Um and um
[46:22] the house that they lived in during my
[46:25] lifetime did not have um have a indoor
[46:29] bathroom. They had a pump in the
[46:31] kitchen, but that was a new development.
[46:32] My mother grew up having to bring water
[46:35] from the spring at the bottom of the
[46:36] hill. And her uncles were all laborers
[46:41] um in uh factories and tobacco fields on
[46:44] farms. And so the um just the
[46:47] uncertainty and the and the you know
[46:51] social constraints of of being a black
[46:54] man during that time has opened up a lot
[46:56] of compassion in my heart. So thank you
[46:58] for asking.
[47:00] And
[47:02] anyone who wants to speak anything else
[47:05] into this space raise your hand. Um I I
[47:09] like to say when Lom Maride's not here,
[47:11] we get to play unsupervised and create
[47:14] the SAO we want.
[47:17] So um so if there anybody who wants to
[47:21] speak the practice today went from very
[47:24] soft and sweet for me to just really
[47:27] joyful. So I don't know if anyone else
[47:30] um had any experience in practice they
[47:33] want to share.
[47:39] And if not, I do want to say John, um, I
[47:42] meant to speak a prayer for you aloud
[47:45] during the when I we were doing the
[47:47] prayers. Um, but I when I got to the end
[47:50] of the document, I did I neglected to do
[47:53] that. But I do pray for you as you um go
[47:57] through this era of rebirth. Um, which
[48:01] can I'm sure be um exciting and
[48:04] terrifying. Um, and I am
[48:08] uh uh hopeful and excited and the SA
[48:11] will, you know, continue to be here for
[48:14] you. Uh, I hope you'll join us um more
[48:17] and um and maybe report in in the chat
[48:20] about how your recreating yourself at 35
[48:23] works. Hi, John. Did you want to say
[48:26] anything?
[48:28] Nope. Okay. Well, the um
[48:33] you
[48:34] I have an opinion about everything, so
[48:36] take it for what it's worth.
[48:39] The um recreate getting to start over at
[48:42] 35. You're not starting from nothing.
[48:45] You have 35 years of experience. Some of
[48:49] it about what not to do, but a lot of it
[48:51] about what to do. And you have
[48:54] relationships and connections and
[48:56] knowledge and skills that you developed.
[48:59] So, it's pretty exciting to get to build
[49:02] a life starting with, you know, that
[49:07] much that much um material because um so
[49:11] often, you know, we we build our lives,
[49:14] you know, uh based on other people's
[49:17] visions and what and what we've been
[49:19] told and what we've given. And so, you
[49:21] get to kind of choose for yourself. I I
[49:25] always say that 18 is a terrible time to
[49:28] pick what you're going to do for the
[49:29] rest of your life. So when you graduate
[49:31] high school and have to pick a college
[49:32] major, I think that's kind of one of the
[49:34] dumbest things that we ever came up
[49:36] ideas we ever came up with cuz I had no
[49:39] idea what I wanted to do. Um and I'm not
[49:42] doing anything closely related I mean
[49:46] remotely related to what I start the
[49:48] path I started at 18. though. So
[49:53] much blessings on your journey.
[49:56] I don't see any other hands, so I'm
[49:58] going to stop um rambling. and Karen if
[50:01] you have closing remarks.
