Descrizione
Imagine your hands in rich, living soil as the Pacific crashes against cliffs a mile away. For five days in September, you'll step into a profound rhythm: sunrise work in the fields, curriculum exploring regenerative agriculture, meals nourished by what you helped grow. Experiencing the Esalen Farm and Garden is not a passive retreat—it's an active immersion in food sovereignty and earth stewardship, grounded in the belief that growing food is both an act of restoration and quiet resistance.
Led by farm educators Candice Isphording, James House, and Becca Gallagher, this wellness retreat at California's legendary Esalen Institute invites you to apprentice in the full cycle of organic cultivation. Whether you arrive with gardening experience or simply a willingness to learn, you'll leave with practical skills, soil under your fingernails, and a renewed sense of your relationship to the land. This is for anyone seeking to reconnect with food systems, deepen their activism through action, and discover that growing nourishment—literal and spiritual—is possible.
The program unfolds within Esalen's ethos of human potential awakening in concert with nature. Nested on the dramatic Big Sur coast, the farm and garden become your classroom and sanctuary, a place where meaningful work and contemplative presence intertwine.
What to Expect
Each day weaves together hands-on labor and guided learning. You'll engage in composting, seed starting, bed preparation, transplanting, and irrigation—the tangible practices that move soil into abundance. Interspersed with work are curriculum sessions exploring specific agricultural topics and community dialogue, ensuring that your experience deepens from doing into understanding. Meals throughout the week are sourced from local, organic production, anchoring the teaching: you eat what healthy soil, tended hands, and regenerative care produce.
The atmosphere balances gentle labor with contemplative space. Mornings might find you preparing beds alongside fellow seekers; afternoons bring learning circles where educators share the "why" behind regenerative methods. Evenings offer time to rest in Esalen's healing environment—hot springs, ocean views, community—processing the week's discoveries.
You'll leave with foundational farm literacy, hands-on skills for growing food, and a tangible sense of food self-sufficiency. More subtly, you'll carry a renewed understanding of your agency in the world: that activism and restoration begin in soil.
