Trade My Troubles: Rising Appalachia's 2027 Tour

In the months after Hurricane Helene struck their home in Western North Carolina, Leah Song and Chloe Smith volunteered on supply drops, rescue efforts and water deliveries. Some days, as the band tells it, they gathered under a lean-to, plugged their banjos and fiddles into a generator and sang to lift the spirits of everyone around them.

The sisters who lead Rising Appalachia released their new album, Trade My Troubles, on October 2, 2026, and it is a record about rest. In the band's words it is "a soft light glowing from a quieter, more introspective time": sixteen songs that celebrate renewal after burnout and replenishment "in the wilds and in tradition." One of them is called "Helene." In 2027 they take it on the road, eighteen shows in fourteen cities, from Atlanta in February to Boulder in May.

Raised on Banjos and Harmony

Leah and Chloe grew up in Atlanta in what their biography calls a "blue collar bohemian family." Their mother was a fiddler, their father a sculptor, and childhood meant contra dances, the neighborhood forests, banjos and harmony singing. In her early twenties, while studying art and Indigenous activism in Chiapas, Mexico, Leah found her way back to folk music. The sisters set out together from there: busking in New Orleans, traveling with a circus from Southern Italy to Northern Sweden, collecting songs in Ireland, Bulgaria and Colombia.

New Orleans held them for seven years, and they learned their craft playing on the street in the French Quarter. The band explains its sound through an old Appalachian farming practice, companion planting, in which corn, beans and squash grow stronger together. Its three plantings are Southern folk traditions, New Orleans swamp culture and Atlanta's street spirit, bound by the seamless harmonies, songcatching and storytelling the band is known for.

The Slow Music Movement

The road kept widening: North America, South America, Europe, the Celtic Isles and Australia, with stages from the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Red Rocks to NPR's Tiny Desk. They have reached communities big and small by train, horseback, biodiesel bus and sailboat. Along the way the band pioneered what it calls the Slow Music Movement, an effort to tour sustainably that meant handmade merch and a welcome at their shows for local nonprofits, herbalists, farmers and poets.

The advocacy runs alongside the music. Leah and Chloe have partnered with the Prison Yoga Project and Honor the Earth, and have been invited to perform on the Hopi Reservation and at Standing Rock.

The records trace the same wide circle. Leylines, named in the band's words after "the earth energies that connect sacred sites," was produced by Joe Henry, with Ani DiFranco and Trevor Hall as guests. Live from New Orleans at Preservation Hall was a homecoming, made with Aurora Nealand and Branden Lewis of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Folk and Anchor gathers covers of songs by everyone from Bob Dylan to James Blake, Erykah Badu to Beyoncé. The Lost Mystique of Being in the Know, highly improvised and hypnotic, was recorded in a single day, with their occasional bandmate Arouna Diarra of Burkina Faso on ngoni.

A Record About Rest

Trade My Troubles is a generous record, sixteen songs running a little over an hour. It opens with a traditional Irish traveller song and closes with an Appalachian fiddle tune, nods, the band says, to their ancestral lineages. In between are songs about motherhood, moonlight, heartbreak and birdsong, under titles like "In Love with the Quiet," "Life is a Poem" and "Mud and Honey."

"The album tilts towards our inner experiences," Chloe says in the band's notes on the record. "I wanted to write about love and how it expanded and broke open in new ways after I became a mother." Aoife O'Donovan, Ayla Nereo, Bonnie Paine and Brittany Haas join as guests.

The Band on the Road

On stage the sisters are joined by Duncan Wickel on fiddle and cello, David Brown on upright bass and baritone guitar, and Biko Casini on drums and percussion, players the band calls "tradition keepers in their own right." It describes its shows as "communal gatherings where people remember their connection to the earth, each other, and the old songs that have carried us through every season of being human."

Who's Opening

Paper Wings, the Nashville folk duo of Emily Mann and Wila Frank, join the West Coast run from Seattle to Los Angeles, Portland aside. Friends since music camps and festivals in their childhood, with roots in Oregon and California, they sing in two-part harmony over clawhammer banjo, fiddle and guitar. They are known for their song "Troubled Soul," and have shared bills with Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, The Milk Carton Kids and Watchhouse.

In Portland, both the early and the late show open with Buffalo Kin, a duo whose music draws on the Old West where they live, blending traditional cowboy folk tunes with haunting originals. They made their first record, Wild Open Country, at home in rural Oregon; their latest EP, Vaquera, is all original music.

On the closing night in Boulder, The Little Mercies open: Bronwyn Chelette, Shanice Richards and Rosalee Walsh, who came together through their love of old-time music and are known for powerful vocal harmonies and raging twin fiddles. They went from three friends at the local jam to headlining festivals in two years, and have been Official Showcase artists for the Southeastern Regional Folk Alliance and finalists for the Freshgrass Awards.

The band's listings name no opening act for Atlanta, New Orleans, Bentonville, Springfield or the first night in Boulder.

The Trade My Troubles Tour runs from February 19 to May 22, 2027: eighteen shows in fourteen cities, opening at Variety Playhouse in Atlanta and closing with two nights at Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder, Colorado.

The tour takes its name from Rising Appalachia's album Trade My Troubles, released on October 2, 2026. It opens on Friday, February 19 in Atlanta, the city where sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith grew up, and reaches Tipitina's in New Orleans on Sunday, February 21. The longest stretch is the West Coast run, from the Neptune Theatre in Seattle on March 19 to the Lodge Room in Los Angeles on April 3, with an early and a late show in Portland and two nights each in Berkeley and Grass Valley. In late April the band plays The Momentary in Bentonville, Arkansas, and Earth Day Music Fest in Springfield, Missouri, before closing at Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder on May 21 and 22.

The venues are Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, Tipitina's in New Orleans, the Neptune Theatre in Seattle, the Aladdin Theater in Portland, The Freight in Berkeley, The Center for the Arts in Grass Valley, Napa Music Hall, the Mystic Theatre in Petaluma, the Golden State Theatre in Monterey, the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, the Lodge Room in Los Angeles, The Momentary in Bentonville, Arkansas, Earth Day Music Fest in Jordan Valley Park in Springfield, Missouri, and Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder, Colorado. California has the most dates: nine shows in seven cities between March 23 and April 3. Before the 2027 run, the band's own tour page also lists autumn 2026 dates in Moab, Utah, Kingston, New York, and Brooklyn.

Paper Wings open the West Coast dates from Seattle to Los Angeles, Buffalo Kin open both Portland shows, and The Little Mercies open the May 22 show in Boulder.

Paper Wings, the Nashville folk duo of Emily Mann and Wila Frank, play Seattle, Berkeley, Grass Valley, Napa, Petaluma, Monterey, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. They sing in two-part harmony over clawhammer banjo, fiddle and guitar, and are known for their song "Troubled Soul." Buffalo Kin open the early and the late show at the Aladdin Theater in Portland on March 20; the duo blends traditional cowboy folk tunes with haunting originals and made their first record, Wild Open Country, at home in rural Oregon. The Little Mercies, Bronwyn Chelette, Shanice Richards and Rosalee Walsh, open the second Boulder night at Chautauqua with powerful vocal harmonies and twin fiddles. The band's listings name no opening act for Atlanta, New Orleans, Bentonville, Springfield or Boulder on May 21.

Tickets are sold separately for each show, by the venue or its ticketing partner. The band's tour page at risingappalachia.com/tour links to every date.

Because each show is ticketed by its own venue, prices and on-sale times differ from city to city. Rising Appalachia's tour page links out for every date, and most venues carry their own listing: The Freight in Berkeley, the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, the Lodge Room in Los Angeles, the Golden State Theatre in Monterey, The Momentary in Bentonville and Chautauqua in Boulder all have show pages for the concert. Earth Day Music Fest in Springfield, Missouri, is a one-day ticketed festival, and its site says tickets go on sale November 20. Several cities have more than one show: Portland's Aladdin Theater sells the early and the late show separately, and Berkeley, Grass Valley and Boulder each have two nights, so check the date before you buy.

Released on October 2, 2026, Trade My Troubles is a sixteen-song record about rest: songs that, as the band puts it, celebrate restoring your spirit after burnout and replenishing yourself in the wilds and in tradition.

The album is bookended by a traditional Irish traveller song and an Appalachian fiddle tune, which the band describes as nods to their ancestral lineages. In between are songs about motherhood, moonlight, heartbreak and birdsong, among them "In Love with the Quiet," "Cageless," "Life is a Poem," the title track and "Helene," which shares its name with the hurricane that struck the band's home in Western North Carolina. Chloe Smith says on the band's website: "The album tilts towards our inner experiences," adding that she wanted to write about love and how it "expanded and broke open in new ways" after she became a mother. Guests include Aoife O'Donovan, Ayla Nereo, Bonnie Paine and Brittany Haas. The record runs a little over an hour, and the 2027 tour takes its name from it.

Rising Appalachia is led by sisters Leah Song and Chloe Smith, with Duncan Wickel on fiddle and cello, David Brown on upright bass and baritone guitar, and Biko Casini on drums and percussion.

Leah Song and Chloe Smith were raised in Atlanta in what their biography calls a "blue collar bohemian family": their mother was a fiddler and their father a sculptor. The band describes Duncan Wickel, David Brown and Biko Casini as "tradition keepers in their own right." Arouna Diarra of Burkina Faso is an occasional bandmate on ngoni and plays on the album The Lost Mystique of Being in the Know.

Most shows start at 7 pm local time. The exceptions: the Portland late show at 9:30 pm, The Freight in Berkeley at 8 pm and the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara at 7:30 pm. Age policies are set by each venue.

In Portland, the early show at the Aladdin Theater has doors at 6 pm and music at 7 pm, and the late show has doors at 9 pm and music at 9:30 pm. Tipitina's in New Orleans lists doors at 6 pm and the show at 7 pm, for ages 18 and up. The Lodge Room in Los Angeles lists doors at 6 pm, show at 7 pm, all ages. The Golden State Theatre in Monterey and both nights at Chautauqua in Boulder have doors at 6 pm and the show at 7 pm, and The Freight in Berkeley opens its doors at 7 pm for an 8 pm show. For Atlanta, Seattle, Grass Valley, Petaluma and Bentonville, times come from the band's listings. Earth Day Music Fest in Springfield is a one-day festival, so check its own schedule, and confirm every show with the venue close to the date.

The Slow Music Movement is the effort Rising Appalachia pioneered to tour sustainably: handmade merch, and local nonprofits, herbalists, farmers and poets welcomed to their shows.

The band has reached communities big and small by train, horseback, biodiesel bus and sailboat, on travels that have taken them across North America, South America, Europe, the Celtic Isles and Australia. The same values run through their advocacy: Leah Song and Chloe Smith have partnered with the Prison Yoga Project and Honor the Earth, and have been invited to perform on the Hopi Reservation and at Standing Rock. When Hurricane Helene hit their home in Western North Carolina, they volunteered for months on supply drops, rescue efforts and water deliveries, and some days played under a lean-to with their banjos and fiddles plugged into a generator.
