Nueva Trova

A politically conscious Cuban singer-songwriter movement that emerged around 1967–1968, blending poetic guitar music with revolutionary themes.

What is Nueva Trova?

Nueva Trova is a movement in Cuban music that emerged around 1967–1968 after the Cuban Revolution of 1959, and the consequent political and social changes. Nueva Trova has its roots in the traditional trova, but differs from it because its content is, in the widest sense, political, combining traditional folk music idioms with ‘progressive’ and often politicized lyrics. It is a Cuban singer-songwriter movement that emerged in the late 1960s, blending the poetic intimacy of the island’s older trova tradition with socially conscious, often revolutionary, lyrics, typically guitar-led and intimate, but can expand to small ensembles with subtle jazz-inflected harmonies.

The lyrics try to escape the banalities of life by concentrating on socialism, injustice, sexism, colonialism, racism and similar ‘serious’ issues, with Silvio Rodríguez, Noel Nicola, and Pablo Milanés becoming the most important exponents of this style. It is related to nueva canción in Latin America, especially Chile and Argentina.

Origins & Lineage

Trova is a style of Cuban popular music originating in the 19th century, created by itinerant musicians known as trovadores who travelled around Cuba’s Oriente province, especially Santiago de Cuba, and earned their living by singing and playing the guitar. Cuba had a troubadour tradition dating back to the 19th century in Santiago de Cuba, with trovadores like Sindo Garay and Manuel Corona having established a canon of poetic guitar-based song that defined Cuban musical identity.

The feeling (filín) movement started to develop around the 1940’s, represented by names like Tirso Diaz, Luis Yaes, Niño Rivera, Aida Diestro, Jose Antonio Mendez, Cesar Portillo de la Luz, Angel Diaz, Nico Rojas, and Marta Valdes. Filín was a romantic song movement of the late 1940s to the early 1960s, and Pablo Milanés, for one, was a filín singer.

The movement is considered to have started with a concert by Pablo Milanés, Silvio Rodríguez, and Noel Nicola on February 18, 1968 in Havana. In 1969, the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC was formed. Under the auspices of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora (GESI) was formed, led by Leo Brouwer, the renowned Cuban classical guitarist, bringing together Silvio, Pablo, Noel Nicola, Sara González, Eduardo Ramos, and other young musicians.

Nueva Trova was inspired by American protest artists like Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, with other major influences including The Beatles, Chilean revivalist Violeta Parra, Uruguayan singer-songwriter Daniel Viglietti and the Catalan protest singer Joan Manuel Serrat. Haydée Santamaría was the creator and sponsor of this movement.

How It’s Practiced

Core instrumentation starts with voice and nylon-string guitar, adding light ensemble colors (upright or electric bass, subtle percussion, flute, strings) only to support the lyric, favoring moderate tempos in 4/4 (bolero-like ballad feel) or a gentle 6/8 (guajira lilt), hinting at the son clave subtly rather than driving a dance groove. Nueva trova uses a rich but understated harmonic language: major/minor 7ths, 9ths, secondary dominants, and tritone substitutions borrowed from filín/jazz, with singable, lyrical melodies that leave space for the words.

Lyrics are written in Spanish with a poetic register: metaphor, imagery, and double meaning carry social or philosophical reflection without slogans. Silvio Rodriguez, one of the genre’s greatest and most known figures, said “A troubadour, is a poet with a guitar,” giving the shortest and most complete definition to this phenomenon, showing that troubadours showed, at the same time, a marked concern for more elaborate lyrics and the highest concern for contemporary poetry.

Performances traditionally occurred in peñas (song circles), cultural institutions, and intimate venues. Casa de las Americas (House of the Americas) has been the most important promoter since its beginning; currently there exists a show in the UNEAC directed by Andres Pedroso, known as the Trova sin Trabas (The Trova without Ties) where every Wednesday many of these trovadores are presented.

Nueva Trova Today

Nueva Trova had its heyday in the 1970s, but was already declining before the fall of the Soviet Union. Nueva Trova was dealt a blow by the fall of the Soviet Union, becoming less popular inside Cuba and also externally, in vivid contrast to the Buena Vista Social Club film and recordings, highlighting the extraordinary charm and musical quality of the older forms of Cuban music.

By the 1980s and 1990s, a second wave (e.g., Carlos Varela, Frank Delgado, Santiago Feliú) carried the style forward, updating its themes for new generations. Today, nueva trova remains a touchstone in Cuba and beyond for intimate, text-driven music with a socially reflective core. Artists such as Gerardo Alfonso who had a big hit with ‘Sabanas Blancas’ and the group Buena Fe who maintain a core sound of guitar and voice are keeping the trova flame alive through fusion with pop.

The movement’s canonical recordings include ‘Ojalá’ and ‘Unicornio’ by Silvio Rodríguez, ‘Yolanda’ by Pablo Milanés, and ‘Es más, te perdono’ by Noel Nicola—songs that transcend generations across all of Latin America.

Common Misconceptions

Nueva Trova is often conflated with traditional trova, but the distinction is fundamental. Traditional trova focuses on romantic and lyrical themes, while Nueva Trova incorporates lyrics about social justice, colonialism, racism, and socialism, without abandoning intimate poetry.

The movement is also sometimes assumed to be monolithically pro-government. Examples of non-political styles in the Nueva Trova movement can be found, such as Liuba María Hevia, whose lyrics are focused on more traditional subjects such as love and solitude, though like others in the movement deploying a highly poetical style; on the other side of the spectrum, Carlos Varela is famous in Cuba for his open criticism of some aspects of Castro’s revolution. Pablo Milanés was publicly critical of some aspects of the Cuban government, though he remained dedicated to the Cuban Revolution; in 2011, it was reported that his willingness to speak openly about the failures of the revolution strained his relations with Silvio Rodriguez.

Finally, nueva trova is not dance music. The stories and the lyrics are not concerned with love and Cubo-centrism but with personal experiences contending with the dichotomies of growing up in a politically uneasy and unstable state.

How to Begin

Begin with the foundational trio: Silvio Rodríguez, born November 29, 1946 in San Antonio de los Baños, became the founder of the Nueva Trova Movement, along with Pablo Milanes, Noel Nicola and Vicente Feliú. Pablo Milanés Arias (24 February 1943 – 22 November 2022) was a Cuban guitar player and singer, one of the founders of the Cuban nueva trova, along with Silvio Rodríguez and Noel Nicola.

Essential albums include Silvio Rodríguez’s Días y flores (1975) and Mujeres (1978), and Pablo Milanés’s Versos sencillos de José Martí (1973). For live experience, seek out peñas or casas de la trova when visiting Cuba, particularly the Casa de la Trova Pepe Sanchez in Santiago de Cuba. Online, Cuban cultural centers and Latin American music festivals occasionally feature nueva trova performances and workshops.
