Wild Heart Lyrics: Letting the Heart Run True in Song

Desirée Dawson

6 min de lecture

"Wild Heart" is a short, bright song built around a single instruction: stop taming yourself and let your heart run true. Written and sung by Desirée Dawson and released in January 2017, the track runs about three minutes and twenty-three seconds, and the upload has drawn more than 165,000 views. What makes it worth a closer look is how little it needs. It does not argue its case. It spells the word out, repeats it, and lets the repetition do the teaching, the way a good chant does.

Lecture · 6 sections

What is the song "Wild Heart" actually saying?

The lyrics open with the body rather than the mind. Bones are "talking to the blood in my veins," skin is "singing songs of joy, songs of praise," and the eyes are "lovin deep, lovin hard." Before any idea is put forward, the singer describes a body that is already awake and communicating with itself. That ordering matters. The song treats the heart's wildness not as a personality trait to be developed but as a condition the body already knows.

Then comes the refrain that gives the song its spine: "seems like a choir keeps chanting, wild one claim your heart." The image of a choir is worth noticing. A choir is many voices saying the same line until it becomes hard to hear anything else. The song asks the listener to hear the same message the way one hears a chant, not as a single argument but as something that keeps returning until it sinks in.

Why does the chorus spell out W-I-L-D?

The chorus opens by spelling the word letter by letter: "W-I-L-D." Spelling is a childlike act. We spell words for a child, or for someone who needs to slow down and take each piece in. Dawson uses it to make the word feel newly built rather than merely familiar.

The next lines carry the most interesting tension in the song: "this is no new news for me, but it might be news to you." This is a remarkably candid stance for a lyric. The singer is not claiming a discovery. She is saying the truth is old to her, and that her job is simply to keep living it, while accepting that the listener may still be encountering it for the first time. That gap between "old to me" and "new to you" is where the song does its work. It refuses both the guru's posture of having the answer and the student's posture of having none. It sits in the middle, as someone who has walked the road and is still willing to be surprised that others have not.

The resolution, "imma let my wild heart run true," is phrased as a decision rather than a wish. The verb is "let." Nothing is being forced. The heart is already wild; the only task is to stop interfering with it.

What does "no need to tame" ask of the listener?

The second chorus-like section is the sharpest passage: "wild heart, there's no need to tame, on the go, there's no time for shame." Two ideas are set side by side here. Taming is the familiar project of making the self acceptable: smoothing edges, managing impulses, keeping feelings in their place. The song says that project is unnecessary. And the reason it is unnecessary is given in the next line. There is no time for shame. Shame is a slow, backward-looking emotion, and the lyric places the heart in motion, "on the go," in the present tense.

The verse that follows widens the point: "wild heart, I've watched you grow, let go of the story you tell yourself and just show." This is the most practical line in the song. Most of us live inside a narrative about who we are, what we can do, and what we deserve. The lyric asks the listener to release that narrative and simply show up. "Just show" is a deliberately plain instruction. It shifts the self from explanation to embodiment, from describing a life to living one.

How does "home is where the heart is" reframe home?

The song's closing sections turn the familiar saying inside out. "Home is where the heart is" is an old proverb, usually meaning that home is a place where loved ones live. Dawson's refrain keeps the proverb but changes its direction: "the heart is always home." If the heart is home, then home is not a location you must reach or return to. It travels with you.

The variation that follows deepens this: "home is where the love is, your love is always home." The word "your" matters. The song locates home in the listener's own capacity to love, not in an external refuge. The final two words, "Come home," are an invitation, sung almost as a closing gesture. After the chorus has told the listener to stop taming, stop waiting, and stop narrating, the song ends by calling them back to the place they never left.

What does the arrangement contribute?

The credits name a compact group of players: Dawson on baritone ukulele and piano, Matt Storm on bass and djembe, Johann D'Souza on guitar, with Konrad OldMoney handling music production and mixing and Kevin Dietz as recording engineer. The session was recorded at Metalworks Studios in Toronto. The instrumentation is worth taking seriously because it supports the lyric's logic. A baritone ukulele is a small, warm, slightly unexpected voice, and it keeps the song light rather than grand. The djembe, a hand drum, gives the track a pulse. A listener can hear it as a heartbeat, which fits a song that is literally about the heart, though the credits do not describe the drum's role in those terms, so that reading belongs to the listener.

The track was also offered as a free download, a detail the description notes directly. That choice suits the song. A lyric about letting the heart run true is easier to share without a gatekeeper.

Where to go from here

If the song has stayed with you, try listening to it twice in a row: once for the words, then once for the drum and the bass underneath them. Notice where the chorus asks you to spell, where it asks you to let go, and where it asks you to come home. Those three moves make a small practice in themselves. Look at the story you tell about yourself this week, and ask whether it is helping your heart run true or asking it to stay tame. The song does not require an answer. It only asks that you hear the choir again.

The song asks listeners to stop taming themselves and let their heart run true. Its lyrics move from the body's aliveness to a chant-like chorus, then to the instruction to drop the stories we tell ourselves and simply show up. It closes by reframing home as something carried inside the heart.
Spelling the word letter by letter makes a familiar word feel newly built, almost like teaching it fresh. The lyric pairs this with the line 'this is no new news for me, but it might be news to you,' which keeps the truth old to the singer while open to the listener's first encounter.
It suggests that the self does not need to be smoothed, managed, or made acceptable before it can live fully. The lyric links this to 'no time for shame,' placing the heart in the present motion of 'on the go' rather than in backward-looking judgment.
It asks the listener to release the internal narrative about who they are and what they can do, and to shift from explaining themselves to embodying their truth. 'Just show' is a plain instruction to live the thing rather than describe it.
It reverses the proverb 'home is where the heart is' so that home is no longer a place you must reach. The heart itself becomes home and travels with you, and the song's final 'Come home' invites the listener back to that inner place.
The credits list Desirée Dawson on baritone ukulele, piano, and as composer and lyricist, Matt Storm on bass and djembe, and Johann D'Souza on guitar. Konrad OldMoney handled music production and mixing, Kevin Dietz was the recording engineer, and the songs were recorded at Metalworks Studios in Toronto.
Yes. The YouTube description says the track is a free download, with a link provided in the video description. The song's upload has drawn more than 165,000 views since its January 2017 release.
