The Lamp at Sri Kalahasti Temple That Never Stops Moving

Beside the presiding Shiva at Sri Kalahasti stand five lamps, and only one of them never stops moving. In a 48-second Telugu clip, the teacher Nanduri Srinivas tells visitors not to miss it. He connects the flame to the temple's Puranic identity as the Vayu linga, a form of Shiva described as having breath, and to a story of a British observer who tried to explain the motion away and failed.

Lecture · 3 sections

Why does one flame at Sri Kalahasti keep moving while the others stay still?

Srinivas starts with the detail most visitors miss (from about 0:00): five lamps sit next to the deity, and four stay still while one flickers and sways without pause. He then gives the scriptural frame (from about 0:14). The Puranas, he says, identify the linga here as the Vayu linga, the living linga of Parameshwara, and say it has inhalation and exhalation, the breath of the form.

He does not claim to know the mechanism. In his words, as translated from Telugu:

"What that power is, I don't know, but that one flame keeps moving all the time."
— Nanduri Srinivas, in a 2024 YouTube clip on Sri Kalahasti

That admission matters. The clip offers a tradition and an observation, not a formula. Its claim is narrower and more interesting: the motion is there, it is witnessed, and the tradition has an explanation ready for it.

What did the British observer do to test the moving flame?

The clip's most useful idea is the method (from about 0:28). The skeptic's first hypothesis was ordinary: air must be coming through a small hole nearby and pushing the flame. So the cloths around the sanctum were removed, curtains and doors were closed, and the lamp was watched. It kept moving. Srinivas says the observers concluded the matter was beyond human explanation, using the word manavatitamaina, meaning superhuman or beyond human.

The structure is a controlled test: a plausible physical cause is named, the variables are isolated, and the effect survives. Srinivas does not name the official, the date, or any written record. Treat the account as an oral story passed on by a teacher, not a documented report.

Where to go from here

This is a 48-second teaser, and the clip does not walk through the full legend. For the wider context, Srinivas's channel, Nanduri Srinivas – Spiritual Talks (youtube.com/c/NanduriSrinivasSpiritualTalks), holds his other talks, several tagged to Sri Kalahasti. If you visit, the clip's advice is simple: find the five lamps beside the deity, and watch the one that does not stay still.

Questions fréquemment posées

In the clip, Nanduri Srinivas says five lamps sit beside the deity and only one moves continuously while the other four stay still. He does not claim to know the power behind it, but he links the linga there to the Vayu linga, described in the Puranas as having breath.
Srinivas says a British observer suspected air was entering through a small hole, so cloths were removed, curtains and doors were closed, and the flame was still seen moving. The observers then concluded it was beyond human explanation. The clip gives no names or dates.
According to Srinivas, the Puranas identify the linga at Sri Kalahasti as the Vayu linga, the living linga of Parameshwara, which is said to have inhalation and exhalation. The clip describes this as the tradition's account rather than a verified physical fact.
