Coming Home by Prashanti Paz: A Listening Guide

Coming Home arrived on March 11, 2021, as a single release with one track, and it sits at an interesting hinge in Prashanti Paz's catalog. By then she had released the albums Inner Light (2017) and Into the Heart (2019), both built around traditional mantras. Coming Home belongs to the pandemic-era releases, alongside Lokah Samastah (2020) and A New Day (2021), where she moved toward what are often called heart songs: more personal, more contemporary in composition, and more accessible than the Sanskrit-heavy core of her work. Born in Patagonia, Argentina, and now based in The Hague, Paz had shifted from screenwriting to full-time sacred music and teaching in 2016. This piece shows what that path sounds like when it turns toward the language of home.

The Sonic Character

Paz's voice is the center of everything she does. It is an alto, often described as luminous and soothing, and it favors clarity and emotional restraint over vocal display. Across her catalog the pacing is slow and tied to the rhythm of breath, with room left between phrases. Her typical instrumentation is spare: harmonium as the main accompaniment, sometimes light strings, and no drum machine or synth layers. I can't give you a verified instrument-by-instrument breakdown of this particular release, so treat the above as the house style of her work rather than a credits list. What you can expect is intimacy. The voice is placed close, the arrangement stays out of its way, and the mood is reflective rather than ecstatic.

The Track Worth Naming

Because Coming Home is a single with one track, the title song is the whole experience. What makes it land is its directness. Where much of her catalog asks listeners to meet Sanskrit mantras on their own terms, this is a heart song in a contemporary register. It requires no background in Buddhism, Hindu devotional practice, or meditation. The title itself does the framing: a song about return, settling, and arrival, offered in the same unhurried voice that carries her mantras. For a listener who has found the traditional material distant, this is an open door. For a listener who knows the mantras, it shows the same sensibility with fewer layers of formality.

Place in the Tradition

Paz's work is commonly filed under kirtan and meditation, but her approach differs from the communal call-and-response model. Her presentations are solo, introspective, and minimally arranged, closer to personal practice than to a group circle. Her foundation is Tibetan Buddhist, built on more than two decades of study, yet her catalog moves across Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, and shamanic mantras, and she grew up in an interfaith family with a Jewish father and a Christian mother. Coming Home steps slightly outside the mantra tradition into devotional songwriting, but it carries the ecumenical, inward-facing spirit of everything around it. Think of it as a bridge piece: contemporary song form, contemplative temperament.

Who It Lands Hardest For

This release suits listeners who want something reflective and emotionally open without needing to decode a liturgical language. It speaks especially to people in transitional moments: someone settling after a move, a loss, a long stretch of uncertainty, or a season of turning inward. It was released in the middle of the pandemic, and the title carries that weight for anyone who spent that time longing for stability. It is less suited to listeners seeking high-energy group chanting, electronic ambient textures, or lush studio production. The austerity is intentional, and the music rewards patience rather than casual background play.

How to Listen

Give it a single, undistracted sitting, ideally in the evening when the day's noise has dropped. Headphones are worth using, since the intimacy of the voice and the silence around the phrases are much of the point. Because it is one track, you can treat it as a complete practice: sit or lie down, let the first few phrases settle you, and resist the urge to skip ahead. Then listen again without doing anything else. Repeated listening is where her restraint begins to open up. If you want context afterward, move backward to Inner Light and Into the Heart to hear the mantra work that this song grows out of.
