Jim Gelcer's Teaching: Approach, Method, and Voice

Jim Gelcer is a drummer, singer, composer and producer who also teaches yoga, and his teaching is hard to separate from his music. Detailed first-hand accounts of his retreats are not available, so this profile relies on what is documented: his training, his recordings, his daily class on Insight Timer, and the framework he works within. Where it infers, it says so.

The Shape of a Session

The clearest window into his teaching is the daily yoga class he offers on Insight Timer. It is presented as regular, substantial instruction in asana, pranayama, meditation and philosophy, not as short social-media clips. His annual retreats at Sivananda Bahamas and Kripalu are residential, which means a slower rhythm and a committed group, with time for chanting alongside practice.

The structure follows the Sivananda approach he trained in, which treats posture, breath, meditation and devotion as parts of one path. Kirtan is not an add-on to the class. It is one of the pillars. Given his musical background, a reasonable expectation is a teacher whose pacing is deliberate and who is comfortable leaving space unfilled. That is an inference from his recordings, not a reported observation of his classroom.

Recurring Themes

His recent catalogue shows what occupies him. Single titles from 2024 and 2025 include "Healing," "Hope," "Compassion," "Resilience," "Forgiveness," "Letting Go," "Authenticity" and "Warrior Spirit." The album Quiet Expanse arrived in July 2025. "Mariupol" (2022) responded directly to the war in Ukraine, so his devotional work is not sealed off from current events.

Together these suggest a teacher concerned with how to carry grief, conflict and uncertainty without hardening. Devotion, in his framing, is a practice for living in the world, not a way out of it. The Sivananda emphasis on integrated paths gives these themes a structure: breath and posture prepare the body, chant and meditation work on the heart and mind.

The Questions He Asks Students to Sit With

He has no published list of questions, and inventing one would misrepresent him. What can be said is that his themes imply certain inquiries. What would it mean to forgive? What does it cost to let go? Can repetition of a single phrase change attention? Kirtan's call-and-response and long repetition are themselves a method of questioning, because they ask a practitioner to stay with one thing until the usual commentary quiets. The Sivananda framework he works within is rooted in Raja Yoga philosophy, which places meditation and self-inquiry at the center, so those questions are internal ones, not intellectual puzzles.

The Aesthetic of Delivery

The documented hallmark is restraint. His voice is described as warm and precise, with priority given to clear Sanskrit and sincerity over vocal display. Recent pieces move at a meditative pace and may hold one mantra for minutes. He is said to be comfortable letting a phrase stand without ornament, which reflects an improviser's sense of space and silence.

Scripture enters through Sanskrit mantra and the devotional tradition of kirtan. Beyond that, the record does not document how he uses stories or how often he uses humor in class. His single title "Do Androids Dream of Savasana" hints at a dry wit, but one title is not a teaching style. The sound is intimate and conversational, closer to chamber music than to a festival stage, and he is open about the jazz, R&B and rock in the blend instead of presenting kirtan as untouched.

Who It Lands For, and Who May Bounce Off

It will suit students who want yoga as a complete practice including chant, who are willing to engage Sanskrit as language and not as background, and who prefer a guide to a charismatic authority. His own positioning is as a companion on the path, not an enlightened master. Musicians and listeners who value harmonic craft may find a rare seriousness in how the music is built.

It is likely to frustrate people seeking high-energy, ecstatic kirtan with a guru figure leading the room, or dense, propulsive production. It will also disappoint anyone wanting purely instrumental yoga music or fully secularized wellness content, since mantra and Hindu devotional context are explicit. Listeners who want either pure classical Indian instrumentation or straight Western pop may find the hybrid sits between the two.

The Wider Tradition

According to his biography, he studied Sivananda Yoga and committed to kirtan after being invited to chant in the temple at the Sivananda Ashram in the Laurentian Mountains. He completed yoga teacher training at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat in the Bahamas in 2006 and began leading kirtan soon after. Sivananda Yoga was founded by Swami Sivananda and is described as classical and nonsectarian, joining asana, pranayama, meditation and bhakti. That is the tradition the material places him in, and no other teacher or lineage is named here.

His route to it was unusual. Born in Cape Town and raised in Toronto from 1968, he studied drums, vibraphone, arranging and improvisation at the Eastman School of Music and jazz at York University, worked as a professional musician, and composed for film and television before turning to yoga and kirtan. He later served as musical director of Shri Fest from 2012 to 2017. The teaching and the music come from the same person, and each shows the other's discipline: the ear of a working musician applied to a devotional practice he took up seriously and adult.
