Description
For women who have served in the military, the transition to civilian life can leave the body and nervous system in a state of chronic activation—held tension, fragmented sleep, and a sense of disconnection that no amount of ordinary movement can touch. This five-day retreat at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY gathers women veterans in purposeful community to reclaim stability, rebuild resilience, and restore the mind-body connection through somatic healing practices grounded in science and compassion.
Led by certified yoga instructor Annie Okerlin and U.S. Air Force veteran Janel Norton, this retreat honors the particular needs of those with military service histories. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all approach, the program meets participants exactly where they are—physically and emotionally. Whether you're managing chronic pain, navigating complex emotions, or simply seeking a space where your military experience is understood and held with reverence, you'll find skilled guidance and genuine peer support throughout these five days.
The retreat centers on iRest, a yoga nidra-based technique endorsed by the U.S. Army Surgeon General for its proven capacity to guide the nervous system toward equilibrium and support the integration of unresolved trauma. When combined with accessible yoga practice designed specifically to accommodate physical limitations common among veterans, this approach creates a container for deep healing. You'll leave with concrete, portable tools for restoring balance and reclaiming stability long after the retreat ends.
What to Expect
Each day unfolds with gentle, accessible yoga that honors your body's needs and history. The retreat weaves together physical practice, somatic awareness work, and daily iRest sessions—a guided meditation technique that invites your nervous system into a state of profound rest and integration. Mornings tend to be lighter; afternoons and evenings deepen the work.
The atmosphere is one of sacred sisterhood. You're among women who understand military service, its demands, and its aftermath. Leaders Annie and Janel bring both professional expertise and lived experience; their presence anchors the retreat in authenticity and trust. Meals are nourishing and communal, offering time to connect informally with other participants.
By the end of five days, you'll have learned techniques you can return to anywhere—practices for regulating your nervous system, moving through your body with presence, and tending to the particular wounds and strengths that military service has woven into who you are.
