About This Event

Description

The loss of a mother in your formative years leaves an imprint that doesn't fade—it transforms. If you lost your mother before age 21, you know this particular loneliness: the way her absence shapes how you move through the world, the identity questions that linger unresolved, the grief that surfaces unexpectedly decades later. This six-day healing workshop at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY, is designed specifically for you—a rare, contained space where the complexity of early maternal loss is not minimized, pathologized, or rushed.

Led by Hope Edelman, grief coach and internationally recognized author of Motherless Daughters and Motherless Mothers, this workshop brings together women who share this experience. Rather than offering quick fixes or spiritual bypassing, the work honors the truth that early mother loss is not something to "move past." Instead, participants learn to integrate this loss into their identities and discover how to hold an enduring connection with their mothers—both the presence they remember and the absence they've carried. Over six days, you'll move through layers of grief, uncover patterns in how you've coped, and experience the profound healing that comes from being truly witnessed by others who understand.

This is the kind of deep, transformational work that Omega Institute specializes in: intentional, trauma-informed, and designed for genuine integration rather than surface-level healing.

What to Expect

The workshop weaves together multiple modalities to create a complete healing experience. Each day includes facilitated group discussion where you'll share your stories and listen to others'; reflective journaling practices to access what words alone cannot reach; gentle movement to help release stored grief in the body; and simple yet powerful moments of being witnessed—the antidote to the isolation that early loss often creates.

Hope Edelman holds space with both expertise and deep empathy, drawing on decades of research, her own experience, and her work with thousands of motherless daughters. You'll leave with new language for your experience, practical tools for navigating grief triggers, a deeper understanding of how your mother's absence shaped your coping mechanisms, and—most importantly—a community of women who truly get it. The intentionally limited enrollment ensures the intimacy necessary for real vulnerability and authentic connection.

Common Questions

FAQs

This is a hybrid experience—not a traditional concert, but a facilitated exploration where the artist uses song, personal narrative, and guided reflection to process early maternal loss. Expect intimate performance interwoven with discussion rather than a setlist-driven show.
While the event centers on maternal loss, it's designed for anyone navigating early parental death, complicated maternal relationships, or the ongoing ripple effects of losing a parent young. The framework is specific enough that those without direct experience may find it less resonant than those who do.
Given Omega's approach and the subject matter, expect this to be intentionally cathartic rather than gratuitous—the artist will likely create space for grief to surface while holding it in a structured, supported environment. It's not a cheerful event, but it's designed with containment and processing in mind, not re-traumatization.
Familiarizing yourself with work that directly addresses loss or family themes will deepen the experience, but this event is designed to stand alone—the artist will likely provide context. Going in cold won't prevent you from engaging; prior knowledge just adds texture.
