About This Event

Description

Imagine completing a sacred thangka painting—a traditional Buddhist religious artwork—in a contemplative monastery nestled in the Tuscan hills, guided by teachers who understand both the technical mastery and spiritual depth this practice demands. The final module of Dharma Art Academy brings together seekers and artists for an immersive retreat where the brush becomes a meditation tool and each stroke honors centuries of Buddhist wisdom.

Whether you've been painting since the academy's opening modules or are encountering thangka for the first time, this intensive retreat in Pomaia, Tuscany offers a rare opportunity to work with accomplished teachers Elena D'Agostino and Elisa Macci in the supportive environment of Istituto Lama Tzong Khapa. Over these transformative days, you'll move beyond viewing thangka as art objects and instead experience them as living doorways to Buddhist practice—completing your own work and blessing it through an ancient ritual that opens the eyes of the deity itself.

This is not a weekend workshop. This is a full immersion into the intersection of contemplative practice and sacred artistic creation, where technical training in drawing and painting becomes inseparable from the spiritual philosophy it expresses. The retreat weaves together artistic instruction, philosophical study, guided visualization, and meditation—a threefold path that honors both the hands and the heart of the practitioner.

What to Expect

Expect structured days that balance focused painting time with formal teaching, philosophical study, and group meditation. Teachers Elena D'Agostino and Elisa Macci guide you through iconographic meaning—why the deity holds certain objects, what colors signify, how proportion and placement carry spiritual teaching. Resident masters offer specific transmissions on technique, helping both returning and new participants work at their own pace and level.

Participants who have begun paintings in previous modules will refine and complete their works. New arrivals begin their first thangka, supported by foundational instruction and the community's gentle encouragement. The retreat culminates in a profound ritual: the opening of the eyes of the deity—a blessing ceremony that consecrates completed paintings and honors the spiritual journey each practitioner has undertaken. You will leave with a completed (or significantly advanced) sacred artwork, a deeper understanding of Buddhist iconography and practice, new technical skills, and your course certificate.
