What if the emotions you've carried for years—the self-doubt, the limiting beliefs, the patterns you can't seem to break—could be transformed through the simple act of putting pencil to paper? At this five-day healing workshop in Big Sur, you'll discover that creative expression isn't about making "good art." It's about making visible the invisible wounds and wisdom within you, then consciously reshaping them.
Led by board-certified art therapist Pamela Hayes Malkoff, this workshop merges evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy with the profound healing power of art-making. Taking place at the legendary Esalen Institute—perched on the cliffs of California's most mystical coastline—you'll work with drawing, collage, painting, and writing in a deliberately supportive environment designed to unlock self-expression. Whether you're seeking to process difficult emotions, dissolve creative blocks, or break free from beliefs that no longer serve you, this immersive experience offers concrete, embodied tools for real change.
This is not a weekend workshop. Five full days allows you to move through resistance, deepen your practice, and arrive at genuine transformation. No artistic experience is required—only your willingness to show up authentically and explore what wants to emerge from within you.
What to Expect
Your days unfold in a rhythm of guided instruction, creative practice, and reflective dialogue. You'll work through four core themes: bringing inner obstacles into visual form, exploring your emotional landscape, using poetry to examine perspective and control, and culminating in a powerful personal Declaration of Independence from limiting beliefs. Each creative session is held in a safe, non-judgmental container where the focus is always on your process, not product.
Pamela guides you through the intersection of art-making and psychological insight, helping you recognize patterns as they emerge on the page. You'll engage in both individual creative work and group dialogue, meaning you'll witness others' breakthroughs while receiving support for your own. All materials—paints, charcoal, collage supplies, journals—are provided. You keep a finished sketchbook as a tangible keepsake of your inner work and evidence of your growth.
