Plants have always been our quiet teachers, speaking to us through fragrance, form, and the stories woven into human culture across centuries. In this hands-on workshop at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY, you'll learn to read and respond to this botanical language—discovering how flowers and plants mirror our own emotional and spiritual landscapes. Led by horticulturist and artist Missy V. Bateson, this intimate daylong practice weaves together sensory observation, creative expression, and reflective journaling to deepen your connection with the natural world.
Whether you're a gardener, artist, nature lover, or simply someone seeking a slower way of knowing the world, this workshop invites you to slow down and listen. You'll spend the day on Omega's lush campus, observing plant characteristics with new eyes, learning the emotional and historical dimensions of flowers, and engaging in guided journaling and flower pressing. By the end, you'll carry home a personalized flower journal with pressed specimens and a botanical art piece that reflects your own unique perspective—tangible reminders of practices you can extend into your daily life.
No gardening or art experience is necessary. What you bring is curiosity and a willingness to be present with growing things.
What to Expect
You'll begin by exploring Omega's beautiful grounds, learning to observe plants as living symbols—noticing color, texture, scent, and the stories embedded in their names and histories. Through guided journaling prompts and conversations led by Bateson, you'll connect your own emotional responses to botanical characteristics, discovering what plants mirror back to you.
The workshop moves naturally between observation and creation. You'll press flowers and leaves, learning traditional techniques that slow the pace and deepen attention. As you work, you'll document your discoveries in a personalized flower journal, selecting specimens and writing reflections that create a record of your own botanical relationship. The day culminates in crafting a botanical art piece—a visual expression of what you've learned about plants and yourself.
Throughout, the atmosphere remains contemplative and creative rather than performance-driven. There's space for quiet work, peer sharing, and individual exploration. You'll leave with:
- A completed flower journal with pressed specimens and personal reflections
- A botanical art piece expressing your perspective
- Practices for plant observation, journaling, and care you can integrate at home
- A deepened understanding of how plants function as teachers and symbols in human culture
