Desi Pop

A fusion music genre blending South Asian musical traditions with Western pop, characterized by catchy melodies, contemporary production, and Hinglish lyrics.

What is Desi Pop?

Desi Pop is a broad umbrella of South Asian popular music that blends Western pop songwriting and production with Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and diasporic sensibilities, foregrounding catchy melodies, verse–pre-chorus–chorus structures, and contemporary electronic production while borrowing vocal ornamentation, rhythms, and instruments from regional traditions such as Punjabi dhol, tumbi, tabla, and sitar. The genre blends traditional Indian music with modern pop elements, often featuring upbeat rhythms, catchy melodies, and lyrics that touch on themes of love, relationships, and everyday life.

Unlike Bollywood film music, Desi Pop emerged as independent, non-film popular music, though the boundaries between the two have blurred considerably in recent years. Desi Pop is popular in India, Pakistan, and other South Asian countries, as well as in the diaspora, serving as a unifying cultural expression across national borders. Lyrics commonly mix Hindi/Urdu/Punjabi (often with Hinglish), and themes range from romance and nostalgia to dancefloor celebration.

Origins & Lineage

The modern idea of South Asian ‘pop’ coalesced in the early 1980s, led by Pakistani pioneers such as Nazia & Zoheb Hassan. Pop music began gaining popularity across the Indian subcontinent in the early 1980s, with Pakistani singers Nazia and Zoheb Hassan forming a sibling duo whose records, produced by Biddu, sold as many as 60 million copies. Their 1980 album Disco Deewane became a landmark release that defined a new pan-South Asian pop aesthetic.

The term Indipop was first used by the British-Indian fusion band Monsoon in their 1981 EP release on Steve Coe’s Indipop Records. The genre truly blossomed in the 1990s with music videos on satellite TV, creating stars outside the Bollywood playback system and cable TV channels and music video culture (e.g., MTV/Channel V) fueled a massive Indi‑pop wave in India. Artists like Alisha Chinai, Falguni Pathak, Lucky Ali, Euphoria, Colonial Cousins, and Bombay Vikings popularized slick, radio‑friendly pop outside of cinema.

The late 1990s and 2000s witnessed a diaspora crossover wave. British‑Asian and North American artists fused R&B, hip hop, and bhangra with South Asian hooks, creating a recognizably ‘desi pop’ crossover for global audiences, with Jay Sean, Raghav, RDB, and Juggy D helping normalize Hinglish lyrics, Western toplines, and club‑leaning production for international radio.

How It’s Practiced

Desi Pop manifests as recorded music, live performances, and increasingly as streaming content. Typical BPM range is 100–125 BPM, with production emphasizing polished studio sound and hook-heavy choruses. Artists blend traditional vocal techniques—melismas, meend (glides), and light murki (ornaments)—with Western topline melodies.

Instrumental arrangements typically layer electronic beats and synthesizers with South Asian percussion and melodic instruments. The sound ranges from glossy dance-pop to R&B-tinged ballads to bhangra-inflected club tracks. Music videos play a crucial role in the genre’s identity, often featuring choreography, fashion, and visual aesthetics that merge South Asian and global youth culture.

Contemporary artists create both standalone singles and albums, distributed primarily through streaming platforms like Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music, as well as through major South Asian labels including T-Series, Zee Music Company, and Sony Music India.

Desi Pop Today

YouTube, TikTok/shorts, and DSP playlists blurred lines between independent desi pop and Bollywood, with pop aesthetics increasingly informing film soundtracks, while standalone singles by singers such as Armaan Malik, Shirley Setia, and Neha Kakkar dominate charts. Current prominent artists include Diljit Dosanjh, AP Dhillon, Badshah, Guru Randhawa, and Neha Kakkar, alongside emerging voices like GINI, W.I.S.H., and Hansika Pareek.

The genre has achieved mainstream commercial success, with tracks regularly amassing hundreds of millions of streams. Desi Pop intersects with other contemporary South Asian genres including Desi Hip Hop, Punjabi Pop, and Hindi Indie. Collaborations with global producers and the rise of desi hip hop/R&B further diversified the sound, keeping the genre club‑ready yet rooted in South Asian melody and rhythm.

Major music festivals in India and diaspora communities regularly feature Desi Pop artists. The genre serves as cultural bridge for second- and third-generation diaspora youth seeking connection to South Asian heritage while expressing contemporary identities.

Common Misconceptions

Desi Pop is not synonymous with Bollywood music, though the two frequently overlap. While Bollywood refers specifically to film soundtracks, Desi Pop encompasses independent popular music. The genre is not traditional or classical music; it is contemporary, commercial pop music that draws selectively from traditional elements.

Desi Pop is also not exclusively Indian—it encompasses Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and diaspora artists and influences. The term “desi” itself refers broadly to South Asian identity rather than any single nation.

Contrary to some assumptions, Desi Pop is not a spiritual or devotional music genre. While South Asian culture includes rich traditions of devotional music (bhajans, qawwali, kirtan), Desi Pop is secular popular music focused on romance, celebration, and everyday life.

How to Begin

Explore curated Desi Pop playlists on Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube Music. Major labels like T-Series and Zee Music Company maintain official channels with extensive catalogs. Artists like Diljit Dosanjh, AP Dhillon, Neha Kakkar, and Badshah offer accessible entry points representing different sub-styles within the genre.

For historical context, listen to foundational artists including Nazia Hassan (Disco Deewane, 1980), Alisha Chinai (Made in India, 1995), and Lucky Ali (Sunoh, 1996). For contemporary sounds, explore recent releases from artists featured on Indian streaming charts.

Attend live performances at South Asian cultural festivals or concerts in major metropolitan areas with significant diaspora populations. Follow music publications like Rolling Stone India or platforms like NH7 Weekender for coverage of the evolving Desi Pop scene.
