Descrição
When life feels fragmented and chaotic, your nervous system needs more than intellectual understanding—it needs somatic presence, movement, and the medicine of ancient rhythm. Centering in the Storm is a four-night silent residential retreat designed to rewire your capacity for resilience from the inside out. Held at the serene Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Woodacre, California, this immersive program weaves together qigong, seated meditation, sacred sound work, and dharma reflection into a unified container of healing and awakening. Led by master teachers Anne Cushman, Teja Bell (Zen practitioner and founder of QigongDharma), and Solwazi Johnson, you'll move beyond conceptual knowledge into embodied wisdom—cultivating the felt sense of belonging, warmth, and inner resource that allows you to meet life's storms from a place of grounded equanimity.
This retreat honors the understanding that resilience isn't built through willpower alone. It emerges when we integrate body, breath, mind, and spirit into a coherent whole. Over four days, you'll practice within the container of Noble Silence, allowing distractions to fall away so that subtle shifts in your nervous system can become visible. The teaching team brings decades of combined training in Insight meditation, Zen, Aikido, and embodied spiritual practice—rare expertise that bridges contemplative depth with somatic restoration.
Whether you're navigating personal upheaval, seeking to deepen an existing practice, or yearning for genuine spiritual community, this retreat offers a pathway to discover your own steadiness amid complexity.
What to Expect
You'll arrive at Spirit Rock's Upper Meditation Hall and immediately enter an atmosphere of intentional silence and care. Days unfold with a rhythm of movement and stillness: morning qigong sessions awaken vitality and presence; seated meditation deepens insight and calm; voice work and sacred sound open the heart; small group meetings and teacher-led dialogue (the only exceptions to silence) offer reflection and guidance; somatic restoration practices integrate the day's learning into your nervous system.
The four-night structure allows genuine transformation. By day two, the mind typically settles. By day four, participants report a palpable shift toward joy, interconnection, and embodied resilience. You'll leave with practical tools—qigong sequences, meditation techniques, and somatic awareness practices—that you can carry into daily life, along with a direct felt sense that inner stability is possible even when outer circumstances remain uncertain.
