Ayahuasca Immersion

The Ayahuasca Immersion is a 26-day ayahuasca retreat at Refugio Altiplano, near Iquitos in the Loreto region of Peru. It is a long-stay plant medicine program for people who need more time than a standard retreat allows: those working with physical, emotional or spiritual concerns, those who want to study shamanism and ayahuasca medicine more deeply, and those who wish to take part in plant or shamanic diets.

Over the course of the stay, guests take part in 14 traditional ayahuasca ceremonies, with consultations with the shaman and guided activities between them.

What to Expect

The Immersion runs for 26 days and 25 nights. It begins on the first day of one of the retreat's regular 12-day retreats and ends on the last day of the 12-day retreat that follows, so the stay spans two retreat cycles. Retreats begin on Mondays.

Across those days there are 14 ayahuasca ceremonies, giving time to return to the medicine repeatedly rather than once or twice. Guests also meet with the shaman for consultations, and plant medicine is given as prescribed. Plant and shaman diets are part of what the longer program makes possible. A sauna is available on nights when there is no ceremony.

The Setting

Guests stay at Refugio Altiplano, described as a comfortable and safe retreat, with accommodation, healthy meals, and house cleaning and laundry service all included. The retreat's office is on Calle Pevas in Iquitos.

Getting there is simple: transport between Iquitos and the retreat is part of the program. Guests should arrive in Iquitos the day before the retreat begins. The group meets on the first morning in the lobby of the Jungle House hotel, on Calle Pevas, two blocks from the Plaza de Armas and next door to the retreat's office. The hotel offers Refugio Altiplano guests a discounted rate, with breakfast included and an airport pick-up service available. Guests can also ask the retreat to arrange Iquitos accommodation for them.

This program suits people who are ready to commit a significant block of time. Interested guests contact the retreat first to confirm availability for their chosen dates, then reserve a place with a deposit. Bookings of 25 nights or more receive a reduced nightly rate.
