Why Poetry Matters: Rumi, Soul Longing & Spiritual Expression

De Be Here Now Network

Poetry serves a necessary function in spiritual life that practical, rational language cannot fulfill. Through the work of Rumi and the insight of Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield, this piece examines how poetry addresses the soul's longing—a dimension of human experience that exists beyond logic and linear thought. Poetry, like music and dance, preserves and honors what would otherwise be lost when we reduce life to utility and control. For practitioners on any contemplative path, engagement with poetry becomes an act of remembrance and an opening to what is sacred.

What Does the Soul Need That Prose Cannot Provide?

Jack Kornfield, who trained for years as a Buddhist monk under teachers such as Ajahn Chah in Thailand and the Mahasi Sayadaw in Burma, brings both contemplative depth and accessibility to the question of why we need poetry. The soul, he suggests, has longings that cannot be satisfied by instruction manuals, self-help lists, or technical language. These longings point toward meaning, connection, and the transcendent—dimensions of experience that exist at the edge of what can be said directly.

Poetry operates in a different register than everyday speech. It uses metaphor, rhythm, compression, and image to point toward truths that would dissolve or become flat if stated as propositions. A poem about loss can contain the fullness of grief without explaining it away. A poem about devotion can evoke the pull of the divine without reducing it to doctrine. This is why spiritual traditions across cultures have preserved poetry alongside their more explicit teachings. The Sufi tradition, which produced Rumi, understood poetry not as decoration but as a primary vehicle for transmission of spiritual understanding.

Why Rumi Endures as a Voice for Spiritual Longing

Rumi, the 13th-century Persian poet and mystic, wrote extensively about the soul's yearning for reunion with the divine. His poetry does not argue for faith; it enacts the experience of faith—the ache, the ecstasy, the confusion, the surrender. Lines like "Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I'll meet you there" operate on the level of direct address to the soul rather than intellectual persuasion.

Kornfield's interest in Rumi reflects a recognition that Buddhist practice and Sufi poetry address similar territories. Both ask: What is the nature of mind? What is longing? How do we awaken to what is real? Poetry, in both traditions, becomes a teacher precisely because it does not teach in the conventional sense. It invites. It opens. It creates a resonance in the reader that bypasses the defensive, critical mind and speaks to something deeper.

Poetry as Resistance Against Reduction

The epigraph Kornfield invokes—attributed to Etheridge Knight, "If we didn't have music, dancers would be soldiers too, holding guns in their arms instead of each other"—points to something crucial. Poetry, music, and dance preserve dimensions of human experience that utilitarian thinking wants to eliminate or subordinate. In a culture that measures value by productivity and efficiency, the arts (including poetry) become necessary acts of remembrance. They remind us that life contains beauty, mystery, and meaning that cannot be quantified or optimized.

Without poetry, without the arts, human consciousness contracts. What we lose is not decoration but access to real aspects of our own nature—our capacity for wonder, for grief, for connection that exceeds self-interest. The soul's longing is not a flaw to be corrected but an indication of our participation in something larger. Poetry keeps that recognition alive.

How Does Poetry Function in Spiritual Practice?

For a meditation teacher like Kornfield, poetry is not separate from the work of awakening. Meditation itself aims at a direct encounter with the nature of mind and reality. Poetry, similarly, aims at direct encounter—not through analysis but through the resonance of language used in a particular way. A practitioner sitting in silence might then read a few lines of Rumi and find that the poetry has opened something that was becoming closed, has reminded the heart of what the mind forgets.

Poetry also models a different relationship to language itself. Most speech aims at clarity, at conveying information efficiently. Poetry often aims at ambiguity, multiplicity, and resonance. It suggests that meaning is not a fixed thing to be transmitted but an invitation to participate. This parallels the Buddhist understanding that wisdom is not a doctrine to be believed but an awakening to be realized.

The Soul's Longing as a Spiritual Signpost

Kornfield's framing treats the soul's longing not as a problem but as an indication of truth. That we long for something beyond the ordinary, that we are moved by beauty and meaning, that we search for connection—these are not neuroses to be medicated away. They are evidence of our participation in a larger reality. Poetry gives voice to that participation. It says: you are not alone in this longing. Across centuries, human beings have felt what you feel. And in that recognition, isolation breaks.

Rumi's poetry, which has found an enormous audience in the contemporary West, operates on this level. Readers are not primarily drawn to Rumi for philosophical instruction (though it is there) but for the felt recognition that someone has named what they cannot quite name themselves. The longing becomes less shameful, less like a personal failure, and more like an opening to what is real.

Where to Go From Here

If you find resonance in Kornfield's vision, several paths open. You might engage directly with Rumi's poetry—The Selected Poems of Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks, is widely available, as are translations by other scholars. You might explore how poetry functions in your own contemplative practice: perhaps sitting with a single line from a poem and allowing it to work on you over time. You might consider the relationship between meditation and poetry in your own life—how they both aim at opening, at awakening to what is present.

Kornfield himself has written about the intersection of Buddhist practice and Western spirituality in books like A Path with Heart and The Wise Heart. For those seeking to deepen the inquiry into why we need beauty, meaning, and poetry in a life of contemplation, his work offers both grounding in traditional practice and permission to honor the soul's longing as real and worthy of attention.

The invitation is simple: pay attention to what moves you. Notice what poetry (or music, or beauty) awakens in you. That awakening is not separate from your spiritual life—it is central to it.

Poetry addresses dimensions of the soul that ordinary language cannot reach. It operates through metaphor, rhythm, and resonance rather than rational instruction, creating a direct encounter with meaning that complements contemplative practice and awakens the heart to what is sacred.
Both Sufi poetry (like Rumi's) and Buddhist practice explore the nature of mind, longing, and awakening. Poetry becomes a teacher because it invites and opens the reader rather than arguing for belief, making it a powerful vehicle for spiritual transmission across traditions.
The soul's longing—our yearning for meaning, connection, and the transcendent—is not a flaw but evidence of participation in something larger than ourselves. Poetry gives voice to this longing, breaking the isolation of individual experience and pointing toward what is real.
Poetry and meditation serve complementary functions. Meditation offers direct encounter through silence and presence, while poetry offers direct encounter through language used in a particular way. Both can open the heart and awaken awareness, often strengthening each other when used together.
The quote suggests that art—music, dance, poetry—preserves essential human capacities for connection and beauty that utilitarian thinking wants to eliminate. Without these expressions, consciousness contracts and we lose access to dimensions of our own nature that make us fully human.
Poetry uses ambiguity, metaphor, and resonance to point toward meaning rather than claiming to convey it directly. This mirrors Buddhist understanding that wisdom is realized through awakening rather than transmitted as doctrine, making poetry a naturally aligned form for spiritual communication.
