Ra Ma Da Sa: TheMantra of Total Healing

Snatam Kaur

A harmonium holds a single, sustaining note in the darkness. Then the voice arrives—steady, intimate, chanting in a language older than many of the traditions that house it. Ra Ma Da Sa, Sa Say So Hung. These syllables form the backbone of a healing practice that has circulated through Kundalini yoga and kirtan circles for decades, but when Snatam Kaur recorded "Ra Ma Da Sa (Total Healing)" for the 2004 album Mantras for Healing, she was crystallizing something that had moved through culture like sound through water: an incantation of total wellness, sung into being by voice and instrument in concert.

The mantra itself emerges from classical yogic tradition—a sequence of sounds said to activate specific frequencies of healing within the body and consciousness. Each syllable carries intention: Ra (sun, creative force), Ma (moon, receptive energy), Da (earth, grounding), Sa (infinity), with the refrain Say So Hung (I am that truth). In the lineage of Kundalini yoga, these are not metaphors. They are sonic prescriptions, meant to move through the nervous system like medicine.

What Kaur accomplished on the Mantras for Healing recording was to honor that precision while building around it a sound-world that could reach contemporary listeners. The production team—keyboardist, bassist, and producer Thomas Barquee; guitarist Zoran Todorovic; flutist Pedro Eustache; percussionist Girish; and tabla player Satnam Singh Ramgotra—created a framework that held the mantra's spiritual integrity without severing it from musicianship. Kaur's voice, accompanied by her own harmonium playing, remains the still point at the center; the ensemble arranges itself around her like a monastery around its altar.

Why sound carries the tradition forward

The choice to record these mantras at all, and to produce them with such musical care, reflects a larger truth about how spiritual practice survives in diaspora and in the modern world. Print cannot hold a mantra the way sound can. The vibration, the repetition, the exact pitch—these are the medicine. Kaur's decision to sing "Ra Ma Da Sa" for an album released through Spirit Voyage Records (and later distributed by Virgin Music Group in 2014) meant that the mantra was no longer confined to ashrams or yoga studios. It could live on YouTube, on Spotify, in headphones—accessible to anyone who typed the words into a search engine in search of healing.

The musicians supporting her understood this gravity. Tabla player Satnam Singh Ramgotra's contribution grounds the piece in rhythm—the tabla being, in itself, a healing instrument in Indian classical music, with specific talas (rhythmic cycles) designed to move prana (life force) through the body. Girish's additional percussion work adds texture without overwhelm. Pedro Eustache's flute offers an air element, a lift. The guitars and keyboards don't crowd the space; they hold it, the way a sangat (spiritual community) holds a single voice in kirtan, amplifying rather than obscuring.

The architecture of a healing recording

The recording exists in a particular moment in the history of world music production—2004, when Kundalini yoga and kirtan were beginning to move from niche spiritual practice into broader wellness culture, but before they became flattened into ambient background music for yoga studios and boutique fitness classes. Mantras for Healing was created with intention to preserve both: the rigor of the tradition and the accessibility of the contemporary listener.

Kaur's harmonium becomes the spine of this preservation. The harmonium—an instrument that arrived in South Asia with colonial trade, was adopted into Indian classical and devotional music, and now sits at the center of virtually every kirtan circle in the diaspora—carries the mantra note by note. It is not flashy. It will never be mistaken for a rock instrument or a jazz clarinet. Its voice is humble, almost homely. This is the point. The harmonium in a healing mantra is meant to create a container for sound, not to draw attention to itself. By recording Kaur's harmonium in clear focus alongside her vocals, the producers affirmed that simplicity itself is a form of sophistication in sacred music.

How mantras travel in an age of streaming

The 1,691 YouTube views for "Ra Ma Da Sa" as of late 2026—more than two decades after its original 2004 release—tells a quiet story. This is not a viral moment. It is not designed to be. A healing mantra is not meant for consumption; it is meant for practice. Each listen, ideally, is an act of devotion or health-seeking, not a passive scroll. The fact that the recording has found its audience steadily, across decades and platforms, suggests that Kaur's vision worked: she created a recording that could withstand both isolation (a single listener with headphones) and community (a group in a yoga studio or kirtan gathering).

The ensemble arrangement makes this possible. When a listener presses play, they are not alone with a singer and a harmonium. They are entering a room where other musicians are already present, creating what the Vedic tradition would call satsang—the company of truth. The flute, the tabla, the keyboards—these are not ornamental. They are the presence of the sangat, translated into sound.

Where to go from here

To engage with "Ra Ma Da Sa (Total Healing)" as intended is to move beyond listening into practice. In Kundalini yoga, this particular mantra is often chanted for 11 to 40 minutes, depending on the goal: quicker healing for acute conditions, longer repetition for chronic conditions or deeper cellular work. Kaur's recorded version—available across streaming platforms—can serve as a foundation for that practice, or as an introduction to anyone new to mantra work. The musicians who created this recording understood that they were not making entertainment. They were building a tool: precise, accessible, and honest. That fidelity to craft is the real healing the album offers.

Ra Ma Da Sa is a Sanskrit mantra from Kundalini yoga tradition where each syllable carries specific healing meaning: Ra represents the sun and creative force, Ma the moon and receptive energy, Da the earth, and Sa infinity. The refrain Say So Hung translates as "I am that truth." Together, these sounds are believed to activate frequencies of healing throughout the body and consciousness.
In Kundalini yoga practice, the Ra Ma Da Sa mantra is traditionally chanted for 11 to 40 minutes, with duration depending on the intention: shorter sessions for acute healing needs, longer repetitions for chronic conditions or deeper cellular work. Snatam Kaur's recorded version can be used as a foundation or looped for extended practice.
Snatam Kaur is a kirtan artist and vocalist known for recording healing mantras. On the Ra Ma Da Sa recording, she provides lead vocals and plays the harmonium, an Indian devotional instrument that serves as the spiritual spine of mantra chanting, creating a container for sacred sound.
A mantra is a sacred syllable or phrase (like Ra Ma Da Sa) believed to carry spiritual power. Kirtan is the devotional practice of singing mantras, often in a call-and-response format within a community. Snatam Kaur's work bridges both traditions through recorded mantra that can serve as personal practice or group accompaniment.
The harmonium creates a steady, meditative drone that anchors the listener's nervous system and allows the mantra syllables to vibrate clearly without distraction. In sacred music tradition, this instrument is designed not to draw attention to itself but to hold space for the spiritual vibration of the chant.
Yes, the recorded version is designed for both solitary practice and group use. You can listen as a standalone meditation or loop it for extended chanting practice, depending on your healing intention and the traditional 11-40 minute duration guidance from Kundalini yoga.
