Why Ancient Ceremony May Be the Key to Changing Your Brain

De Alberto Villoldo - The Four Winds Society

Assistir · 8

In the high Andes, the story goes, every village fire is put out for three days before the solstice, and the only people who can bring it back are the shamans who climb to the top of a sacred mountain at roughly 7,000 meters to catch the first light of the Pleiades on a sliver of ice. That image opens Alberto Villoldo's 19-minute video, published in March 2025, in which he argues that the human brain still runs on survival programs far older than modern life, that those programs will not loosen without ceremony, and that a home fire rite, a counterclockwise chakra cleansing with water, and a set of "Guardians" can reset the energy around us. It is a talk that braids Andean ritual, a laboratory past, and claims that deserve a second look, and it rewards a reader who takes it seriously on its own terms while keeping a clear eye on what is tradition and what is theory.

What happens when the fires go out in the high Andes?

Villoldo builds his case around a memory. He describes a mentor, Antonio, whom he had trained beside for twenty years, a man he calls a combination of "a father figure" and "a compassionate, kind, one-eyed old man." Near the end of Antonio's life, the older man invited him back to the place where his people came from. The journey is the emotional spine of the video, and the Andean solstice ritual is its image of what ceremony actually does.

The sequence he describes is precise. Before the solstice, every fire in the villages is extinguished for three days. Then, as the Pleiades rise above the horizon again, the light hits the ice at the top of the mountain, and only the shamans who dance there at that altitude can capture it. They bring down a piece of ice, and villages receive it, each family taking a small piece home along with a flame to relight the kitchen fire. The fire is not treated as a convenience. It is treated as a connection to the stars, "the place that they believed that they came from originally."

Villoldo is not presenting this as folklore to admire from a distance. He presents it as a method, and the logic of the method runs through everything else in the talk.

Why does the ancient brain need ceremony to change?

The scientific frame Villoldo offers comes from his years in a brain laboratory at San Francisco State University. In his telling, the lab taught him that the human brain holds very old structures, which he calls the limbic brain, and that this "ancient brain" runs a limited set of survival programs. The claim that matters most for the rest of the video is his conclusion from that work:

"You cannot change your mind unless you change your brain... this ancient brain will not allow you to change unless you create a rite of passage for it." (Alberto Villoldo, in a March 2025 YouTube video, around 2:00 to 3:00)

His argument is that this is why every culture has ceremonies. Graduations, weddings, births, and deaths are not decorative. They mark a threshold that the old brain can recognize, and only through that marked threshold does real change become possible. Willpower and insight, in this view, are not enough, because they speak to the thinking mind while the ancient brain is still running its own program underneath.

Whether or not one accepts the neuroscience as he states it, the underlying idea is familiar to anyone who has sat through a funeral that finally let them grieve, or a wedding that made a commitment feel real. Villoldo is pointing at that gap between knowing something and having your body agree to it.

What are the four programs Villoldo says the brain runs on?

He names four, and he gives each a short, blunt label. Fear is the program of survival and threat. Feeding is the program of scarcity: "I don't have enough, I need to hoard," which he links to greed. Fighting is aggression, the habit of "projecting the enemy onto the other." And fornicating, in his word, is the use of sexuality to manipulate. He adds that the last of these is "rampant... in the world today."

The list is worth reading slowly, because it reframes a lot of modern behavior. Hoarding, outrage, and the urge to find an enemy are not treated as character flaws. They are presented as the output of a brain that was built for a much more dangerous environment and has never been asked to stand down. Ceremony, in Villoldo's account, is the tool for asking it to stand down.

He ties this to a larger diagnosis. Speaking of modern education and consumer culture, he describes "a cultural trance" and says we need to "wake up from that cultural trance that we have been educated into so that we can become natural beings again." He tells viewers to "recover our soul," which he distinguishes from "that overly domesticated Western soul that tells us that whoever dies with the most toys wins."

How do a fire ritual and a water cleansing reset the body?

The most practical part of the video is an invitation. Villoldo asks viewers to go to a restroom, rinse their hands in water, and then cleanse their chakras by moving wet hands along the body. The sequence he describes starts at the heart center and moves counterclockwise through the first, second, third, heart, throat, sixth, and seventh chakras, rinsing the hands between each. He imagines the body as the face of a clock, with the hands as the clock's hands. Then he reverses the direction, moving clockwise from the heart down through the chakras, which he describes as reactivating them.

The logic he gives is that the cleansing comes after the fire ritual in the Andean practice, and that the two belong together. The fire is the element of return, the water is the element of cleansing, and the body is the place where both are enacted. His instructions are simple enough that a reader can try them without a teacher, which is part of their appeal.

He also says the practice works "at a biological level," a phrase that should be read as his claim rather than an established finding. What the ritual offers, regardless, is a clear physical gesture with a beginning, a middle, and an end. That is the structure of ceremony he has been describing all along.

Does the energy around you need structuring?

Here the video makes its most distinctive move. Villoldo borrows the idea of "structured water" and applies it to energy. He explains that water flowing down a creek tumbles over rocks and takes on a spiral. When that water is pushed through straight plumbing pipes into a city, he says, it becomes unstructured. Chemically it is the same, but it no longer has the spiral dynamic that makes it life-giving. He argues the same thing happens to energy:

"The energy that flows from power lines and radio towers and cell phone towers is unstructured... whereas in nature all of the energy is spiraling." (Alberto Villoldo, in a March 2025 YouTube video, around 9:16)

His proposed remedy is to "call on the four Guardians" and install them in the home, the bedroom, or the meditation area. He describes them as filters that restructure incoming energy and keep out what is unstructured. He adds that the less structured the environment, the more it triggers disease, and that the goal is not simply to block bad influences but to "create a harmonic in the space where you are working and living and loving and dreaming."

Readers should hold this part with care. Structured water is a concept that circulates widely in alternative health circles, and the transfer from water to power lines and cell towers is Villoldo's own leap. He presents it as a conviction, and the video does not offer evidence that a reader could check in the moment. What is useful is the underlying intuition: that where we spend time, and how it is arranged, shapes how we feel.

What does sleep have to do with the brain shrinking?

The video's most striking claim comes almost in passing. Recalling a conversation with an Amazonian shaman, Villoldo says the man told him, "You've been dreaming," and the point landed: even during sleep, the body is in a regenerative process. He then states that the brain "shrinks by 20%" during dreaming and deep sleep. Viewers who want to verify that figure should look for the primary research before repeating it. Within the talk, it serves as a bridge from ritual to the body's own nightly ceremony of renewal.

How can you bring ceremony home?

Villoldo closes by urging viewers to "take it home with you," and to see the modern world as an experiment that nobody signed up for. He says he sometimes wakes and goes straight to the fire to do ceremony, because so much in daily life pulls us "further from our authentic original and Aboriginal self." His prescription is not complicated: return to the elements, return to the senses, and "lose our mind and come to our senses of direct experience."

What makes the talk worth more than its individual claims is its consistent shape. Ritual marks a threshold. The threshold lets the body and the old brain accept a change. Repetition and environment then keep it alive. Whether one reads that as neuroscience, as an inheritance from Andean practice, or as a working metaphor for the rituals we already keep, it is a coherent way of thinking about why we feel stuck and what might move us.

Where to go from here

If the video left you curious, start with the parts you can test on your own. Light a candle or a small fire at a deliberate moment and note how it changes the evening. Try the hand-rinsing sequence he describes and notice what it does to your attention. Pay attention to the thresholds that already exist in your life, such as the way a funeral or a graduation changes what you can say and do. Then look up the primary sources behind the brain-shrinkage figure and the structured-water idea before you build on them. Villoldo's central invitation is not to take his word for anything, but to return to direct experience. Start there.

[0:08] ancient ceremony wake up from that

[0:10] cultural trance that we have been

[0:20] soul our Natural Soul and not that

[0:23] overly

[0:24] domesticated Western soul that tells us

[0:27] that whoever dies with the most toy is

[0:30] wins so we need to return to the

[0:33] elements and to Nature we need to return

[0:35] to our senses we need to lose our mind

[0:38] and come to our

[0:45] [Music]

[0:50] senses Antonio was my mentor was my

[0:53] teacher he was the combination of a

[0:56] father figure and a compassionate kind

[1:00] and one eyes old man and I had spent 20

[1:05] years training with him only he and I

[1:08] were the only people who knew how little

[1:11] I truly knew and one day he invites me

[1:15] to go with him back to the place of

[1:17] birth to the place of origin to late

[1:19] Titi Kaka to the place where his people

[1:22] came from and because he was going on

[1:26] his final journey I mentioned earlier

[1:29] that I spent many years in a in a brain

[1:34] laboratory at San Francisco State

[1:38] University and the um one of the things

[1:41] that we

[1:43] learned is that there are very ancient

[1:46] parts of the human brain it's called the

[1:49] mamalian brain actually the lyic brain

[1:52] very ancient brain and it has four

[1:54] programs which are fear fight ORF flight

[1:58] fear feeding feeding scarc I don't have

[2:01] enough I need to hoard greed fear

[2:04] feeding

[2:06] fighting aggression projecting the enemy

[2:09] onto the other and

[2:12] fornicating using sexuality to

[2:16] manipulate which is rampant of course in

[2:18] the world today so this ancient brain

[2:22] actually needs ceremony in order to

[2:24] change it will not allow you to change

[2:27] unless it has ceremony which is why you

[2:30] have ceremonies everywhere around the

[2:34] world it's why you have graduation

[2:37] ceremonies and wedding ceremonies and

[2:39] birth and death cere everywhere because

[2:43] that ancient brain will not allow you to

[2:45] change unless you create a writer

[2:48] passage for it and you know that you

[2:50] cannot change your mind unless you

[2:54] change your

[2:55] brain this is what we've learned today

[2:58] you need to change your brain and this

[2:59] ancient brain will only change with

[3:02] ceremony and the fire is Humanity's most

[3:06] ancient ceremony the fire ceremony do it

[3:09] at home take it home with you remember

[3:12] that you have been trained you've been

[3:14] taking part in an experiment that nobody

[3:17] signs you up for and this is called The

[3:20] American or the European American

[3:23] educational experiment where we're

[3:25] training children to become

[3:28] systematically mentally

[3:31] by training them to become good

[3:34] consumers and we have to break to

[3:36] shatter that mold to wake up from that

[3:39] cultural

[3:41] trance that we have been educated into

[3:44] so that we can become natural beings

[3:46] again come back to our natural selves

[3:48] come back to the fire come back to the

[3:50] water to the wind and to the light we

[3:54] need to recover our soul our Natural

[3:57] Soul and not that over

[4:01] domesticated Western soul that tells us

[4:05] that we're that whoever dies with the

[4:08] most toys

[4:11] Wins part of breaking that cultural

[4:13] trance that we've been educated into is

[4:15] to return to the ancient ceremonies to

[4:18] return to the ancient ways there are

[4:21] days that I wake up in the morning and

[4:23] I'll go straight to the fire to do

[4:26] ceremony because there's so much

[4:28] happening in the world today

[4:31] that are disconnecting us even further

[4:35] from our authentic original and

[4:38] Aboriginal self so we need to return to

[4:42] the elements and to Nature we need to

[4:44] return to our senses we need to lose our

[4:48] mind and come to our

[4:51] senses of direct

[4:54] experience you know in the Andes what

[4:57] happens in the high Andes and I remember

[4:59] going with my mentors to the Holy

[5:02] Mountain of the

[5:04] alate and it's very high mountain and

[5:07] right before the solstice all of the

[5:11] fires and all of the villages would be

[5:13] put out all of the fires would be

[5:16] extinguished for three days three days

[5:19] of darkness and then on the 21st of June

[5:24] and actually before that it was when the

[5:26] pladies rose above the Horizon again

[5:30] again and the light of the plates would

[5:34] then hit the ice at the very top of the

[5:38] mountain and it was only the shamans who

[5:41] could dance at the very top of the

[5:43] mountain at 7,000 M

[5:47] altitude that would take on that would

[5:50] capture that light of fire from the

[5:53] pladies and they would capture a piece

[5:56] of ice bring it down and share it with

[5:58] all of the villages who would take a

[6:00] small piece of ice back to their Village

[6:04] as well as the fire so they could get

[6:07] the fire for their kitchen started again

[6:11] and they could feed themselves with a

[6:14] little piece of ice with the fire from

[6:16] the pladies from the Stars which is the

[6:20] place that they believed that they came

[6:22] from

[6:23] originally so what I'd like to invite

[6:26] you to do is to go to your go to your

[6:30] restroom rinse your hands in water

[6:32] cleanse your hands and if you want to re

[6:34] cleanse your chakras what happened after

[6:37] this fire is that you would take water

[6:40] in your hand and you would cleanse the

[6:43] chakra

[6:45] counterclockwise as if your body were

[6:47] the face of the clock and your hands

[6:50] were the hands of the

[6:51] clock and beginning in your heart

[6:54] center and then rinsing your hands and

[6:57] then going to your first chakra

[7:01] counterclockwise rinsing your

[7:03] hands second chakra

[7:08] counterclockwise rinsing your hands the

[7:11] third chakra

[7:14] counterclockwise counter clockwise body

[7:17] is the clock your hands are the hands of

[7:20] the

[7:22] clock rinsing your

[7:27] hands the heart chakra again

[7:30] rinsing your hands and cold water your

[7:36] throat rinsing your hands your sixth

[7:43] chakra rinsing your hands and your

[7:45] seventh

[7:49] chakra counterclockwise and then wait a

[7:52] moment rinse both of your hands and then

[7:54] beginning In Your Heart

[7:56] Center spin it clockwise rebalancing

[8:00] that

[8:02] chakra and then down to your first

[8:04] chakra spinning it clockwise and you can

[8:07] rinse in between if you like you don't

[8:09] need to but you

[8:11] can CU now you're simply reactivating

[8:15] them before you were cleansing

[8:18] them third

[8:20] chakra clockwise

[8:28] Direction throw

[8:34] third

[8:36] eye and the Very

[8:41] Crown so you're

[8:43] resetting your chakra system as well at

[8:47] a biological level when you call on the

[8:50] four Guardians and install them they're

[8:53] like

[8:54] filters they filter the energy coming

[8:57] into your house into your bedroom into

[8:59] your meditation area and they make it

[9:02] exquisitly

[9:03] pure it's like this many of you have

[9:07] heard of structured water actually it's

[9:10] surprising how many people have not

[9:12] heard of structured water because when

[9:16] water flows down a creek it tumbles over

[9:19] the rocks and it actually has a spiral

[9:23] it has a spiral

[9:24] movement when it gets put into Plumbing

[9:27] pipes to take water into a city the

[9:30] pipes are perfectly straight and the

[9:33] water becomes

[9:35] unstructured which means it doesn't have

[9:37] the dynamic life force chemically is

[9:41] identical but it no longer has a spiral

[9:44] Dynamic it no longer is lifegiving is no

[9:46] longer life sustaining water the same

[9:49] with the energy the energy that that

[9:52] flows from power lines and radio towers

[9:56] and cell phone towers is unstructured is

[9:59] straighten line whereas in nature all of

[10:02] the energy is

[10:04] spiraling it's in a spiral Dynamic and

[10:07] when you install the four Guardians they

[10:09] will restructure the energy to make it

[10:13] life supportive and energy supportive

[10:17] and makes it healing exquisitly healing

[10:20] and it keeps everything out that is

[10:23] unstructured the less structured the

[10:25] energy or the water or the environment

[10:27] that you're in the more that it triggers

[10:29] disas

[10:31] so the Guardians are really important

[10:33] it's not just to keep bad stuff out and

[10:36] to allow only good stuff in but is to

[10:38] create a harmonic in the space where you

[10:41] are working and living and loving and

[10:44] dreaming you know we have I remember one

[10:48] Shaman in the Amison said to me one time

[10:52] Al be to where have you been the last 20

[10:55] years and I go what do you mean you know

[10:58] I said yeah you've been asleep

[11:00] say yeah you sleep about onethird of

[11:02] your life 8 hours a day and you said

[11:06] yeah you you've been asleep I've been

[11:09] dreaming he said to me so that even

[11:12] during the time that we

[11:14] dream and that we

[11:16] sleep there's a regeneration

[11:19] regenerative process happening in the

[11:22] body what's happening in the body at

[11:25] that time is that the brain shrinks by

[11:28] 20% did you know that that your brain

[11:30] shrinks by

[11:33] 20% uh while you're while you're

[11:36] dreaming while you're in deep sleep so

[11:39] that cerebral spinal fluid can wash away

[11:43] toxins from the

[11:45] brain this is really accelerated when

[11:48] you live in a place where the energy is

[11:51] harmonic if it's harmonized if it's

[11:54] coherent if it's structured wow then you

[11:58] repair and you heal

[12:00] the other thing that happens when you

[12:01] sleep is that

[12:04] melatonin melatonin which you all know

[12:08] is what gets us to go to sleep at night

[12:11] produced by the pineal gland melatonin

[12:14] what it does is that it repairs

[12:17] DNA inside your

[12:19] brain and if you're not in an

[12:21] environment where the energy is

[12:23] structured you don't have the DNA

[12:25] repair that we need in order to prevent

[12:28] the dementias and even more important to

[12:31] to access the higher states of clarity

[12:34] and of Consciousness and

[12:36] communion that creates psychosomatic

[12:39] Health this is why when the more that

[12:42] you learn to work with the energies that

[12:44] we're surrounded

[12:46] by the more that you'll be able to

[12:48] create the kind of environments that

[12:51] promote health and that promote healing

[12:53] and that promote

[12:55] communion sacred communion with all of

[12:57] the life forms that we surround Ed by

[13:00] the only female English astronaut that

[13:02] went to the space station Helen Sherma

[13:04] PhD in chemistry was asked one time what

[13:08] do you do you think we're going to meet

[13:10] EXT extraterrestrial

[13:12] intelligence she said I am so looking

[13:15] forward to it because terrestrial

[13:17] intelligence is so dull and stupid and

[13:21] then they asked what do you mean how

[13:23] what do you think they'll look like she

[13:25] says well they have been here with us

[13:28] for 10,000 years they are among us

[13:32] they're just an octave of so they're

[13:35] invisible to us and we to

[13:37] them but they're populating we're

[13:39] sharing space we're sharing

[13:42] Dimensions together and the quality of

[13:46] the encounters that you have with these

Villoldo describes the ancient brain as the limbic structures he studied in a brain laboratory at San Francisco State University. He says it runs four survival programs: fear, feeding, fighting, and fornicating, meaning the use of sexuality to manipulate. He argues these programs will not change without ceremony.
He says the ancient brain will not allow change unless it is given a rite of passage, a marked threshold it can recognize. This is why cultures everywhere hold graduations, weddings, births, and funerals. Insight alone, in his view, does not reach the older part of the brain.
Before the solstice, village fires in the high Andes are extinguished for three days. Shamans then capture the light of the Pleiades on a piece of ice at the top of a sacred mountain, around 7,000 meters, and bring it down so families can relight their kitchen fires.
Rinse your hands in water, then move them counterclockwise along the chakras, starting at the heart and moving through the first, second, third, heart, throat, sixth, and seventh. Rinse between chakras, then reverse direction clockwise from the heart down to reactivate them. Villoldo presents this as a way to reset the chakra system.
Villoldo says water flowing in a creek takes on a spiral dynamic that makes it life-giving, while water pushed through straight pipes becomes unstructured even though its chemistry is identical. He applies the same idea to energy from power lines and cell towers and recommends installing four Guardians as filters. These are his claims rather than established findings.
Villoldo states in the video that the brain shrinks by 20% during dreaming and deep sleep, and he links this to a regenerative process in the body. The claim is his and appears without a cited study in the talk, so readers should check primary research before repeating it.
He contrasts a natural soul with an overly domesticated Western soul that he says measures a life by whoever dies with the most toys. Recovering the natural soul, in his framing, means returning to the elements, nature, and direct sensory experience, and waking from a cultural trance shaped by modern education and consumer habits.
