This short video offers behind-the-scenes glimpses of Ram Dass during the filming of "The Water Poem" music video. Rather than a polished final product, it captures the raw moments of production—the presence, intention, and creative energy that goes into bringing spiritual art to life. The footage serves as a window into how contemplative teachers approach artistic expression and the process of making media that bridges spiritual teaching with contemporary forms.
"The Water Poem" represents Ram Dass's engagement with music and poetry as vehicles for spiritual teaching. The behind-the-scenes footage captures the production process—the setup, the takes, the spontaneous moments between crew members—rather than the final edited piece. This approach of sharing the *making* of spiritual art reflects a teaching principle: that the journey and the presence brought to creation matter as much as the finished work.
By releasing raw production footage, Ram Dass invites viewers into the reality of creative work rather than presenting only the polished final product. This transparency honors the effort, intention, and imperfection inherent in any artistic endeavor. For spiritual teachers, the behind-the-scenes process also becomes teaching material—it demonstrates how to remain present and intentional even during the practical, sometimes technical work of production.
Ram Dass has long used music, chanting, and poetry as gateways into deeper awareness. Unlike intellectual teaching, which engages the thinking mind, music and poetry activate emotional and intuitive dimensions of consciousness. By filming "The Water Poem," he extends this tradition into the medium of music video—bringing together visual art, sound, and imagery to create a multisensory experience that can open hearts and minds.
The behind-the-scenes format emphasizes that spiritual work—including artistic creation—is not separate from daily life and ordinary tasks. The moments of laughter, adjustments, and real-time problem-solving visible in production footage demonstrate that presence and intention can infuse any activity, whether it's meditation in formal practice or organizing a film crew. This aligns with Ram Dass's broader teaching about bringing mindfulness to all aspects of living.
Those interested in how spiritual teachings translate into contemporary media should explore more of Ram Dass's musical and poetic works. The full version of "The Water Poem" music video, once released, offers the complete artistic vision. Additionally, exploring other spiritual artists who use music, visual art, and film as teaching tools can deepen understanding of how consciousness can be expressed through many mediums beyond traditional lecture or written text.
