The Fishbowl Mind: How a TinyFrame of Reference Creates Suffering

Most of us spend our lives operating from what might be called a fishbowl — a contracted consciousness centered entirely on personal preferences, fears, and desires. We judge everything by whether it aligns with what we want, what we like, what happened to us. This tiny frame of reference, which can be summed up in a single letter — I — becomes the lens through which we interpret all of reality. And according to spiritual teacher Michael Singer, this contraction is the primary source of human suffering.

The problem isn't that life is fundamentally difficult or that you're doing something wrong. The problem is that your frame of reference is ridiculously small. When you live within boundaries defined by "my car, my job, my family," you're constantly colliding with a reality that refuses to conform to your preferences. The weather doesn't cooperate with your birthday. Your partner doesn't behave exactly as you want. A colleague says something hurtful. These events shouldn't devastate you — they're statistically insignificant compared to the billions of other events unfolding simultaneously across the planet — yet they feel catastrophic because your awareness is pinched so tightly around your own story.

The Architecture of the Contracted Self

Singer describes how the contracted frame of reference operates. When you meet someone, your entire focus narrows to a single question: Do they like me? Your emotional and mental state orbits that concern. When you're in a close relationship, the frame shrinks even further. All your attention becomes focused on a single person — is my spouse cheating on me, did they hurt my feelings, are they doing something wrong? Your mind becomes a tornado of circling thoughts, bouncing endlessly off the walls of your preoccupation while the actual universe continues its indifferent expansion around you.

The consequences are not abstract. They manifest as neurosis. The more contracted your frame of reference, the more neurotic you become. Someone spends an hour agonizing over a quarter-inch of hair cut off — what Singer calls "a stupid example," but which he multiplies by ten thousand times a day across the landscape of your actual life. You're worried about a scratch on your car. You're replaying a conversation from twenty years ago. You're anxious about something that might happen next month. All of this turbulence occurs because your consciousness is trapped in an absurdly small box.

What Does Reality Actually Look Like?

To jolt the reader awake to the absurdity, Singer invokes scale. The Earth you live on is 1.3 million times smaller than the sun. The sun is 93 million miles away. The moon, visited by astronauts who made a spectacular achievement of it, orbits 550,000 to 600,000 miles away. And that's just within your solar system. Beyond lie entire galaxies and, beyond those, the observable universe that has been unfolding for 13.8 billion years.

Into that cosmic canvas, you have 70 to 90 years — if you're fortunate — of existence on a planet that has been spinning for 4.5 billion years. The statistical insignificance of your personal drama isn't a philosophical abstraction; it's a mathematical fact. And yet, we spend those precious decades locked in emotional reactivity about events so minute they register as noise against the background of what's actually occurring.

This is why the smaller your frame of reference, the harder your life becomes. Not because life is fundamentally hostile, but because you've made it impossible to have any perspective on what matters.

The Expanding Frame: A Different Way of Being

Singer then pivots to what a healthy frame of reference actually looks like — and admits that very few people have one. Imagine, he suggests, if your frame of reference expanded to include the reality of your situation: you were born onto a planet spinning through dark, empty space. That's your actual circumstance. From that vantage point, a scratch on your car becomes what it is — a minor surface imperfection with no bearing on your fundamental existence.

This isn't resignation or spiritual bypassing. It's a recalibration of what deserves your emotional energy. When your frame expands to include reality itself — not the story you tell about reality, but the actual fact of your existence as a conscious being in an unimaginably vast universe — something shifts. There's suddenly more room to breathe. The constant friction between what you want and what is occurring loses its grip on you.

The solution to suffering, Singer emphasizes, is not to sit around trying to get what you want. The solution is to expand your frame of reference so that more is included in your awareness. When you do, the "tiny I" that got upset about a scratch becomes contextualized within something larger. You're still aware of the scratch, but it no longer has the power to dominate your inner state.

The Role of Past Experience

Another way the frame contracts: limiting your awareness to your personal history. You experienced a divorce, or a betrayal, or a loss. You file these away as defining experiences and let them become your reference point for interpreting the present. But your personal history — the things that happened to you — is minuscule compared to what was simultaneously unfolding elsewhere on the planet.

When you got divorced or missed an opportunity or suffered a setback, 800 billion other things were happening at the same time. You fixated on one. And that fixation has calcified into a frame of reference through which you now filter all new experience. This is the mechanism of psychological conditioning: we take a single thread from the vast tapestry of existence and convince ourselves it's the whole cloth.

The Witness and What You Actually Are

Embedded in Singer's teaching is an invitation to a radical reorientation: you are not the voice in your head narrating, judging, and interpreting. You are the one who hears that voice. He calls this the "seat of consciousness" — the witness that observes without being defined by what it sees. Most people have never made this distinction. They identify completely with the narrator: the thoughts, the preferences, the story. But there's something prior to that — an awareness that simply perceives.

This distinction matters because it's the foundation for expanding your frame of reference. As long as you're identified with the contracting voice — the part that says "this is what I want, this is what I don't like, this is what I'm afraid of" — your frame will remain small. But the moment you recognize yourself as the witness, the observer, you can step back from the narrator's constant complaints and judgments. From that witnessing position, a larger perspective becomes available.

The Freedom That Comes From Acceptance

What emerges when you expand your frame of reference is not indifference but freedom. Singer describes encountering reality with what might be called "radical acceptance." Whatever is happening is happening. You check it out, you observe it, you respond appropriately — but you're no longer bracing against reality, trying to force it into a shape your ego has decided it should take.

This creates space for something Singer points toward repeatedly: the possibility of living a life filled with freedom, love, and joy. Not because you've finally gotten everything to be the way you want, but because you've stopped demanding that reality conform to your preferences. You're no longer at war with what is.

Where to Go From Here

The invitation here is practical. Pay attention to your frame of reference. Notice when you're contracting — when your awareness narrows to a single concern, a single person, a single piece of your personal history. Notice how that contraction creates suffering. Then, deliberately, expand. Place whatever you're upset about against the background of cosmic scale and time. Not to diminish real pain, but to contextualize it within the truth of your actual situation.

More fundamentally, begin to experiment with the distinction between the observer and the observed. Watch the voice in your head do its work — narrating, judging, complaining. And notice that you're aware of it doing that. That awareness itself — that seat of consciousness — is not limited by the voice's contracted frame of reference. It's vaster. It includes everything. As you learn to rest in that witnessing awareness, your frame of reference naturally expands, and life becomes less a battle and more an unfolding you can meet with presence and grace.

[0:47] Chakrative J masters.

[0:50] You will find as you grow

[0:53] that one of the main obstacles

[0:57] to your spiritual growth

[1:00] can be called your frame of reference.

[1:04] It's a neat term frame of reference.

[1:08] Where's the box, the frame in which your

[1:12] reference belongs?

[1:14] the edges of where you look, of what

[1:17] it's about. That's your frame of

[1:20] reference. You have a very small frame

[1:22] of reference. You live a very small

[1:25] life. Your frame of reference is my car,

[1:29] my job, my family. Okay? And that's even

[1:34] a pretty big frame of reference. Some

[1:35] people, some frame of references are

[1:37] very small. It can be explained with a

[1:40] two-letter word. Me.

[1:43] My frame of reference is me. It's about

[1:46] me. My wife is about me. My husband's

[1:48] about me. My children are about me.

[1:50] They're all supposed to be the way I

[1:51] want. Okay? Everything's about me. My

[1:54] job is about me. My friends are about

[1:55] me. The weather's about me. Well, why is

[1:58] it raining on my birthday? Why is it

[2:00] raining on my birthday? It could have

[2:01] rained yesterday. That's your frame of

[2:03] reference. That's the limit at which

[2:06] your consciousness is taking in the rest

[2:09] of your universe is very, very small.

[2:12] What do I like? What do I want?

[2:15] What do I believe? What I hope? What do

[2:19] I dream? See, it's not really two

[2:21] letters. It's one. I got it with one

[2:23] letter. I.

[2:26] That is the full frame of reference for

[2:28] a human being. I, me, mine. It's all

[2:31] about what I want, what I like, what I

[2:34] don't like, etc. So the frame of

[2:38] reference is limited by your center of

[2:42] consciousness. And then from that center

[2:44] of consciousness, how far out can it go?

[2:48] And I'm telling you, in most people's

[2:50] cases, and if you pay attention, you'll

[2:51] see that you're one of them. It goes out

[2:54] as far as I'm interested in my life.

[2:58] People say that, well, how's that

[2:59] affecting my life? What's reality? But

[3:02] how's that affect my life? That's really

[3:05] funny. Okay. So, there's a frame of

[3:08] reference. And I'm telling you, and

[3:10] maybe before we're done, you'll agree,

[3:12] the smaller your frame of reference, the

[3:15] harder is your life.

[3:18] Period. If I'm looking and my frame of

[3:21] reference is about whether people like

[3:23] me, not about anything else, about

[3:26] whether people like me. It's my frame of

[3:28] reference. So, I meet somebody, I'm

[3:30] paying attention. Do you like me? Do you

[3:32] not like me? There's something wrong.

[3:34] How can I please you? So my frame of

[3:36] reference is limited to my interaction

[3:39] with another human being. And by the

[3:41] way, that was a very big reference. What

[3:44] if your frame of reference is about your

[3:46] wife or husband? Not any human being,

[3:50] just one human being. You are in

[3:52] trouble. Because when you go to work,

[3:54] all you're thinking about, are they

[3:55] cheating on me? What are they doing? Did

[3:57] they do anything wrong in the morning?

[3:58] Did they hurt somebody? Do I need to

[4:00] apologize? How can I do that? Your whole

[4:03] mindset and your emotion set is framed

[4:07] within your frame of reference. To get a

[4:09] contrast, let's talk about a healthy

[4:12] frame of reference. Would you like to do

[4:14] that? Very few people have one, but you

[4:17] can have one. What's your frame of

[4:18] reference? I live on a planet. It's

[4:22] tiny.

[4:23] No, it's really big. No. 1.3 million of

[4:27] my planets fit inside the sun.

[4:30] 1.3 million earths inside the sun. So if

[4:33] your frame of reference is even on the

[4:35] whole planet, you don't stand a chance.

[4:37] It's really about your husband and wife

[4:38] or kid. You see how small the frame of

[4:40] reference is? Then you're in trouble

[4:42] because every single thing that happens

[4:44] bothers you. It's either what you want,

[4:46] what you don't want, and so on. What if

[4:48] your frame of reference is I was born

[4:50] onto a planet and I'm going to spin

[4:53] around in dark black empty space and 1.3

[4:56] million earths inside the sun. That's my

[4:59] frame of reference. But how long you

[5:01] going to be here? I don't know. 80, 90

[5:03] years. Is that a long time? Are you

[5:06] kidding? How long's the planet been

[5:08] here? 4.5

[5:10] billion years. Did you know that? And

[5:14] you're going to be how long? What' you

[5:15] tell me? 70 or 80, 90? What's your frame

[5:19] of reference? Which one? Does your frame

[5:21] of reference include reality?

[5:24] your frame of reference include outside

[5:27] this tiny little mindset that keeps

[5:29] telling you that what you get is what

[5:31] matters and what you like is what

[5:32] matters and what somebody said is what

[5:34] matters. It's just within this tiny

[5:36] little envelope. Yes or no? And inside

[5:39] that envelope, what's going on? OMG, I

[5:42] don't want to know. I'm going to have

[5:43] trouble with mine. I don't care about

[5:44] yours. What's going on is commotion.

[5:47] Thoughts are bouncing off the walls and

[5:48] they're swirling around and the

[5:50] tornadoes are going on in there and

[5:51] every once in a while the sun breaks

[5:53] through. not the real sun, right? The

[5:55] sun inside your mind and you're just

[5:58] inside of this this little fishbowl

[6:01] which is your frame of reference and the

[6:04] quality of your life is going to be

[6:06] dependent upon your frame of reference.

[6:08] So the solution is not to sit there and

[6:10] get what you want. Solution is to expand

[6:12] your frame of reference so it includes

[6:15] more. If you expand your frame of

[6:17] reference so more is included, you got

[6:19] some more room to breathe. things are

[6:21] more all of a sudden the tiny I got

[6:23] scratch in my car. Well, in the frame of

[6:25] reference of things where there's 1.3

[6:28] million earths inside the sun, what is

[6:30] the scratch on your car? Nothing.

[6:33] Nothing. But it bothers you because your

[6:35] frame of reference is too small. What if

[6:37] my frame of reference is what I said?

[6:40] The Earth is spinning through black,

[6:43] dark, empty space. Is it not? All the

[6:45] time for 4.5 billion years. The

[6:49] astronauts, they made a big deal. I

[6:50] liked them. I like it a lot. They went

[6:52] to the moon. Where's the moon? I don't

[6:55] know what it was. 550, 600,000 miles

[6:58] away, something like that. Okay. The sun

[7:01] is 93 million miles away.

[7:05] Where's your frame of reference? How

[7:07] dare you limit it to such a small thing?

[7:12] And you will be neurotic. The smaller

[7:14] your frame of reference, the more

[7:16] neurotic you are. All right. She went in

[7:19] for a haircut, a hairdo. And this is

[7:21] what she told the hairdresser she

[7:23] wanted. And when they took everything

[7:25] off, oh my god, you took off at least a

[7:28] quarter inch too much.

[7:31] 93 million miles away, guys. And you're

[7:35] playing around with this quarter inch on

[7:37] your hair. You do do that. That's just a

[7:40] stupid example, but multiply it out

[7:43] 10,000 times a day. So, you are going to

[7:46] be upset. You are going to have a very

[7:48] hard time in your life because your

[7:50] frame it's not because life is wrong or

[7:52] life is a problem because your frame of

[7:54] reference is wrong. Your frame of

[7:55] reference is ridiculously small. All

[7:58] right? But that is the human frame of

[8:00] reference. It is extremely small. You

[8:02] you won't pay attention to me. It

[8:04] revolves around you. What you like, what

[8:07] you don't like, what happened. How about

[8:09] that? Oh, I don't want to talk about I'm

[8:11] going to cry. How about your frame of

[8:13] reference is limited to your past? The

[8:17] things you've experienced in your past

[8:19] are your frame of reference. This

[8:20] happened, I got divorced, then this

[8:22] happened, that happened, and then my

[8:24] child got sick and then that hap. Right

[8:26] or wrong? You store all this stuff in

[8:27] there. How big is that stuff in

[8:29] comparison to what's actually going on

[8:31] everywhere else? Minuscule. I always

[8:34] tell you, you don't like it. It is

[8:36] statistically insignificant. What has

[8:38] happened to you in your life? Why?

[8:41] Because 800 billion zillion other things

[8:43] were going on at the same time. And you

[8:45] got fixated on one. Yes or no? And I

[8:49] mean really fixated.

[8:51] You can't even think about it. Bothers

[8:52] you so much. We had this opportunity. It

[8:54] didn't happen. How long? 20 years ago.

[8:56] What are you doing? How many things were

[8:59] going on even on the planet at the same

[9:03] time that you had that one experience?

[9:06] 800 billion zillion. And you have

[9:08] limited your frame of reference to what

[9:10] happened to you.

[9:12] That make sense to you? Is that

[9:14] reasonable? Because I'm telling you,

[9:15] that's why you suffer. That is why

[9:17] you're not happy. That is why you don't

[9:19] feel joy all the time. That is why you

[9:21] don't think life is the needest thing.

[9:23] You know what the planet Earth is? God's

[9:25] idea of Disney World. There's stuff

[9:28] going on all over the place all the

[9:30] time. There's trees and there's things

[9:32] and there's mosquitoes and there's flies

[9:34] and there's clouds and there's water and

[9:36] how many things can I name? Every single

[9:38] place there's something going on on

[9:40] planet Earth. What about Mars? What's

[9:42] going on? Nothing. Venus, nothing sad or

[9:45] nothing not too interesting and be bored

[9:48] to death. You're bored here. If you're

[9:50] bored here, it's you're not getting what

[9:53] you want,

[9:54] right? It's not boring. It's a pretty

[9:56] active place, isn't it? Every single

[9:58] moment of your life, there's something

[9:59] going on. Yes or no? All right. So, your

[10:03] frame of reference is limited to what

[10:05] has happened to you before that you

[10:08] couldn't handle because stuff you hand

[10:10] went through. white lines on the road,

[10:12] clouds going by, people you don't know,

[10:15] right? I'll tell you, I told you once,

[10:17] 99% of every single thing that ever came

[10:20] into your senses went right through.

[10:23] The leaves on the tree, the wind, this,

[10:26] each raindrop, every single thing you

[10:29] experience with all of your senses, they

[10:31] just go through. But some of them don't.

[10:34] Which the ones that you cling to. It

[10:38] really rained on my birthday and it's

[10:40] done every single birthday for the last

[10:42] three years. I am never going to talk to

[10:45] God again. Either it doesn't exist or

[10:47] isn't like me. You couldn't handle what

[10:50] happened to you. So you hold on to it

[10:52] and you build it inside of your mind and

[10:54] your heart as you as your experience

[10:57] that matters. It doesn't matter. It

[10:59] can't possibly matter when it rained.

[11:02] Okay. But it does to you and so you

[11:04] can't handle it. And so then you build

[11:06] up inside your head and your heart. Not

[11:08] to talk about your head. You build up

[11:10] inside your head all these concepts and

[11:12] views and preferences and hopes and

[11:14] dreams and values. You got a lot of

[11:16] stuff in there. And they're all based on

[11:18] your past experiences. And not a single

[11:20] thing that you value isn't because

[11:23] someone happened to you before. You had

[11:25] a relationship. They didn't like this.

[11:27] You like that. It's all based upon your

[11:29] past experiences. What else do you have?

[11:32] That's your data. It's like taking I'm a

[11:34] computer guy. Take a computer and give

[11:37] it no data. It doesn't have

[11:38] [clears throat] any problems at all.

[11:40] Take a computer and stick some data in

[11:42] there. Every single conclusion will come

[11:45] up based on that data. And that's how

[11:47] you're saying. And then you say, if I

[11:50] talk like this, you say, "But that's all

[11:51] I have." No, you have the entire rest of

[11:54] the universe. You just your frame of

[11:56] reference doesn't include it. What if

[11:58] you sit there and say, "I think it's

[11:59] neat that Saturn has rings." Then you're

[12:01] happy Saturn was included in your frame

[12:03] of reference. Eventually, you'll catch

[12:05] on to what I'm talking about and realize

[12:07] that even the 1.3 million Earth 93

[12:10] million miles away, that is not a very

[12:13] big frame of reference. What if you

[12:15] walked around every day and realized

[12:16] you're on a little planet spin around?

[12:18] Get in your car, you're scooting around

[12:20] the little planet in a car that be far

[12:22] out. So, you're just having these

[12:23] experiences. What else is going on

[12:26] everywhere's else? All the stars, the

[12:29] moons that I tell you this and I know

[12:31] you stare at me. Why would I say such a

[12:33] thing? Right. Your son. You want a frame

[12:35] of reference? Yeah. I haven't even built

[12:37] a frame of reference yet. I wouldn't

[12:39] live with that frame of reference for a

[12:40] billion years. That's way too small. I

[12:43] need arm. I need elbow room. All right.

[12:45] Well, what's your frame of reference?

[12:46] Okay, fine. So, we now got ourselves a

[12:49] star, one star, and a planet going

[12:52] around. Okay, good. I've now included

[12:54] the star 93 million miles away. That's

[12:56] pretty big, right? I've included that

[12:57] star in my frame of reference. How many

[12:59] other stars are there in your galaxy,

[13:02] 300

[13:04] billion of those things shining up

[13:08] there? Well, how come that didn't fit in

[13:10] your frame of reference? Why' you limit

[13:12] yourself to one star? There's 300

[13:15] billion of them. And I've talked to you

[13:16] before about how far away they are from

[13:18] each other. Do you know that? Most you

[13:19] don't even know that the nearest star to

[13:22] you is 4.3 light years away. Well,

[13:26] that's not very far away. 4.3 is a

[13:28] pretty small number, but then I told you

[13:30] what a light year. Build your frame of

[13:31] reference. If I hold the beam of light

[13:33] above the planet Earth and let it go for

[13:36] one second, it circumnavigates the globe

[13:39] seven and a half times. One second. It

[13:42] circumnavigated the globe seven and a

[13:44] half times. Go that every second for 4.3

[13:50] years and you'll get to the next star.

[13:54] What's your frame of reference? And

[13:56] there are 300 billion of them in your

[14:00] galaxy.

[14:01] Take a breath. What if that was your

[14:04] frame of reference? What problems do you

[14:06] have? None.

[14:08] How you like that? I would have a

[14:10] problem with the world. I don't have a

[14:12] problem in the solar system. I have a

[14:14] problem in the galaxy. Why would we have

[14:16] a problem in the galaxy? It's out there

[14:18] doing its own thing all the time. It's

[14:20] been going on for 13.8 billion years and

[14:24] it's just interacting and doing its

[14:25] thing and I got this little set of

[14:27] little planet experiencing some

[14:29] meaningless experience while I'm

[14:31] spinning through space and orbiting

[14:33] around everything. See, it's not like

[14:35] what difference does it make? It's the

[14:37] truth. And I haven't even finished.

[14:39] Let's say you managed to get your frame

[14:41] of reference to that to realizing it's

[14:44] hot out. No, no, it's a star, one of 300

[14:47] billion, and you're fairly close to it,

[14:49] so you feel it's heat. Wow, that is

[14:53] pretty neat way to look things, isn't

[14:54] it? That expanded your frame of

[14:56] reference to include reality. Your frame

[14:59] of reference is not reality. It's the

[15:00] tiny tiniest little minuscule chip of

[15:03] nothing. That's what's happened to you

[15:05] so far. But I'm going to be here for 80

[15:07] or 90 years. And what's happened? One

[15:11] single minuscule thing each moment and

[15:14] you missed everything else. That's how

[15:16] you think. And if you think like that,

[15:19] you will not have a problem for the rest

[15:20] of your life. Doesn't mean you can't

[15:22] deal with things. Life is an interactive

[15:24] sport. But you don't deal with them

[15:26] because you can't handle them. I'm going

[15:28] to play a sport. Why? I can't handle if

[15:30] anybody hits me. I can't handle if they

[15:31] win. I can't handle. If somebody spikes

[15:33] the ball and hits my hand, I get a

[15:35] black. Well, then don't play. He goes,

[15:37] "I mean, you're wasting your time." All

[15:39] right. Can you handle the experiences

[15:42] that happened to you on this little

[15:43] planet in the middle of nowhere for 80,

[15:46] 90 years? Of course, you can. [laughter]

[15:49] Just expand your frame of reference.

[15:52] They seem like nothing. My husband was

[15:54] in a bad mood. Wife was in a bad mood

[15:56] when she came home. And and they and

[15:58] they were gruff and they yelled at me.

[16:01] So what? How many people made sounds out

[16:04] of their mouth at the same time that

[16:06] that sound was coming in that person's

[16:07] mouth? There's 8.5 billion of you guys

[16:09] around here. You're hung up on a noise

[16:11] that one of them made. That's how you

[16:14] look at life. Not but he talked to me

[16:17] that way. Everybody's talking to

[16:19] everybody. Your frame of reference is I

[16:22] get it is way too small. It's totally

[16:25] fixated on the sound that that person

[16:28] made next to me. All right? I tell you

[16:30] all the time, you want to not have

[16:31] problems with the sound that they made,

[16:32] right? There's a little There's not, by

[16:34] the way, people people make sure I admit

[16:37] that. It's a full disclosure. There's a

[16:39] little button behind your ear and if you

[16:41] turn it, it speaks a different language

[16:44] automatically. All you have to do is

[16:46] turn that button when they're yelling at

[16:48] you and it's fun. You know what they're

[16:50] saying? It doesn't make any difference.

[16:54] You can expand your frame of reference

[16:57] anytime you want. The trouble is your

[17:00] consciousness gets fixated on the

[17:02] fishbowl you put over your head. Okay?

[17:05] Your thoughts, your hopes, your dreams,

[17:07] your conscious, your views, your

[17:08] beliefs, there's thoughts going on in

[17:10] your head. Are they going in his head?

[17:12] No. Her head? No. This is going on

[17:14] inside your head. Well, what's outside

[17:17] that fishbowl? Everything else. I don't

[17:21] know. [laughter] Right or wrong.

[17:23] You do see the fishbowl of your head,

[17:25] don't you? Bunch of thoughts swim around

[17:27] in there all the time.

[17:30] Okay. What's outside your fishbowl?

[17:33] Everything else in the universe.

[17:37] There's your frame of reference. Why are

[17:40] you fixating it on this tiny tiny tiny

[17:43] little thing made up of your past

[17:46] experiences which create your likes and

[17:48] dislikes and now you're looking through

[17:49] that fishbowl and that's all you see.

[17:51] So, we didn't even stop. We got back to

[17:54] 300 billion stars in your galaxy. And

[17:56] now you understand how far away they

[17:57] are. If the distance between two stars

[17:59] from each other is 4.3 light years,

[18:04] whoa, it's a big thing, isn't it? Your

[18:07] galaxy has a big Milky Way galaxy. It is

[18:09] not. There's two trillion other galaxies

[18:12] as we can tell. Two trillion other

[18:15] galaxies going on like the Milky Way and

[18:19] bigger or smaller or whatever. And I

[18:21] just told you the size of Milky Way.

[18:22] How's your frame of reference work with

[18:24] that?

[18:26] Where's the nearest galaxy with? If the

[18:28] nearest star is 4.5 light years, which

[18:33] is pretty big, and then there's 300

[18:35] billion of them before you get outside

[18:36] the galaxy. Well, how far away is the

[18:40] next galaxy

[18:41] from us? Next major galaxy is Andromeda.

[18:45] It is 2.5

[18:50] million light years away. the next one.

[18:56] And where's your frame of reference? And

[18:59] if you say to me, but come on, be real.

[19:01] Come down to reality. That is reality,

[19:04] but not to you. Because your frame of

[19:06] reference is too small. Do you

[19:07] understand what I'm teaching you?

[19:09] Imagine that. That was your frame of

[19:11] reference. That there's two trillion

[19:14] galaxies going on spread out over those

[19:17] distances. that the next galaxy is 2.5

[19:20] million light years away. Oh, you didn't

[19:22] say that. Yes, I did. 2.5 million light

[19:25] years and remember every second 7 and a

[19:28] half time do that for 2.5 million years.

[19:30] And now tell me what matters. Go on. I'm

[19:32] begging but politics with this with that

[19:35] getting old. What matters? None of that

[19:38] could possibly matter in the frame of

[19:40] reference we're talking about which

[19:42] happens to be reality. So the problem is

[19:45] not what's happening here. The problem

[19:47] is you can't handle what's happening

[19:48] here because your frame of reference is

[19:50] myopic. It's totally fixated on you.

[19:54] What you like and what you don't like

[19:55] and what you want and what happened to

[19:57] you and what you don't want to happen.

[19:59] So that's what's swimming around inside

[20:00] your fishbowl. How big is that fishbowl?

[20:03] I keep telling you in comparison to

[20:05] Gainesville,

[20:07] it's tiny. It doesn't spread very far,

[20:10] does it? And when you do that, then the

[20:12] whole thing becomes about you. That's

[20:14] what ego is. It's your consciousness.

[20:18] What is your consciousness capable of?

[20:20] Your consciousness is capable of

[20:22] everything I've been telling you.

[20:23] There's no limit to your consciousness.

[20:25] I talked to you about the fact that the

[20:27] sun is 93 million miles away. You can

[20:30] open your mind and feel like you

[20:32] experience that. You can get a feeling

[20:34] of a frame of reference that includes

[20:36] those kind of distances. Well, you can

[20:38] do that with a galaxy. You can do with

[20:40] everything. What if you did that all the

[20:42] time? But if you woke up in the morning

[20:44] and said, "I'm back

[20:47] where on the tiny little planet, what

[20:50] are you going to do? Who cares?"

[20:53] Why is it made me do it? I'll tell you

[20:54] what I'm going to do. I'm going have a

[20:55] good time. If you're gonna come and

[20:57] spend 80, 90 years

[21:00] on a little planet that has everything

[21:01] in the world going on and you're having

[21:03] a hard time, you did something wrong

[21:06] because it's a rather exciting place

[21:08] compared to anything we've ever seen

[21:10] with all our James Webb telescope

[21:12] Hubbles. We ain't seen nothing that's

[21:14] worth visiting yet so far. Somebody once

[21:16] claimed, "Oh, we found water on another

[21:19] planet." Well, we got plenty of water

[21:21] here. It falls in the sky. Okay. And

[21:25] it's like, how can I get through that

[21:28] veil? Even if I do, you'll walk right

[21:30] out that door and go like a magnet.

[21:33] Boom. It'll bring it right back because

[21:36] you are in the habit of focusing. It's

[21:39] not anything's wrong with your

[21:40] consciousness. It's not of expanding

[21:43] your cons the 60s that expand your

[21:45] consciousness. No, no, no. I've learned

[21:48] I've seen it's not about expanding your

[21:50] consciousness. It's about ceasing to

[21:52] contract your consciousness. If I talk

[21:55] to you, see you light up a little bit

[21:56] because you're catching on. Well, really

[21:58] not a problem. It's okay. My socks

[22:00] didn't match today. I I guess I handled

[22:02] it. Okay. And you're going to catch on.

[22:05] There is no difference.

[22:07] Whatever's happening is happening. You

[22:09] okay with it? Sure, why not? It's what's

[22:12] happening. All right. I can handle it. I

[22:14] be not even I can handle it. I think

[22:15] it's neat. I think it's neat.

[22:18] Everything's going wrong. That's so much

[22:20] fun. I started the day and I thought I

[22:22] was going to get such and such done and

[22:24] every single step of the day it moved me

[22:26] backwards. I was a backwards day. Did

[22:28] you have fun with it? It's fun. It's a

[22:31] fun place

[22:33] until you become myopic and think that

[22:36] what you want and what you don't want

[22:38] and what you like all based on your past

[22:41] experiences is supposed to be a certain

[22:43] way. Now you're neurotic. Now you have

[22:45] tension and anxiety and worries. What do

[22:48] you worry about? and not on here because

[22:50] I know what you worry about. Here's what

[22:52] you worry about. That what I want might

[22:54] not happen. That what I don't want might

[22:57] happen. You check it out. That's what

[23:00] you worry about. How do you know what

[23:02] you want? How do you know what you want?

[23:04] You don't ever look at that. Because

[23:06] I've had past experience that made me

[23:07] feel good. I like those. I had past

[23:10] experience made me feel bad. I don't

[23:11] like those. Okay. So now your your whole

[23:14] past which is nothing just moments that

[23:17] pass by you. You built a whole model

[23:19] inside your head of those and said I

[23:21] either want them to happen again or I

[23:23] don't and now I have to go out and work

[23:25] for that and then upset and get scared

[23:27] and feel failure or success and be I I

[23:30] don't I can't even talk about what it's

[23:32] like to be a human. What's a pretty

[23:35] crazy thing to do to sit there? You talk

[23:37] there's a thing in the Bible about fall

[23:39] from the garden. Genesis fall from the

[23:41] garden. You know where you fell into the

[23:43] fishbowl.

[23:45] That is when they're talking about Adam

[23:48] and Eve being with God. It's just

[23:50] they're they're just in the garden. It's

[23:51] just experiencing whatever is. That

[23:54] apple takes a whole new meaning. It was

[23:57] called self-nowledge.

[24:00] You started thinking of yourself instead

[24:03] of the expansiveness of everything. You

[24:06] fell into the ego. You fell into the the

[24:09] limited concept of me. I, me, and mine.

[24:13] All right. And you did. And why would I

[24:15] say that was a fall in the garden? What

[24:17] do they say happens after you fall from

[24:19] the garden? Now man must work by the

[24:22] sweat of his brow to be okay.

[24:25] That's what happens. Now you must work

[24:27] by the sweat of your brow to be okay.

[24:28] You know anything about that? That's all

[24:30] you do all the time. Because you're not

[24:32] okay. Well, you're not okay because the

[24:34] world is terrible. No, you're not okay

[24:36] because you fell into this. my opic view

[24:38] of things that says what matters is me.

[24:42] What matters is what I want and what I

[24:43] don't want and what I like and what I

[24:45] don't like. And I can't believe you did

[24:46] that. I would never have done that to

[24:48] you. I can't believe you did that to me.

[24:49] And now you're all upset and all freaked

[24:51] out instead of having a good old time

[24:55] 2.5 million light years away and

[24:59] expanding your consciousness to say, you

[25:02] know, you know what you could say?

[25:04] You're not going to like this. nice

[25:05] Jewish yogi. I really like Christ's

[25:08] teaching. His teachings are just

[25:09] phenomenal. Watch this. Okay, instead of

[25:12] saying my frame of reference is 2.5

[25:15] million light years away, here's my

[25:17] frame of reference. Forgive them, Lord,

[25:19] for they know not what they do. That is

[25:22] a statement about humanity. And you're

[25:24] included. You don't know what you're

[25:26] doing. You're just sitting there trying

[25:28] to fight and struggle to be okay to make

[25:31] things be the way you want. Okay, fine.

[25:34] I I I I understand, right? But if you

[25:37] expand your frame of reference, it

[25:39] doesn't make much sense that if I only

[25:41] have 80, 90 years to live, that's how

[25:43] they use it. I use it by suffering

[25:46] and you use it by getting uptight and

[25:48] neurotic and and worrying and come on.

[25:52] Well, but sometimes it works out. Yes,

[25:54] it does sometimes. And then you worry

[25:56] that it won't. Then you're worried that

[25:57] somebody will betray you. Then you're

[25:59] worried that you'll get sick. Then you

[26:00] worry that it's really working out

[26:01] great. But I don't want to die. If I

[26:03] die, he or she won't be with me anymore.

[26:05] And what will I do? You'll ruin it no

[26:07] matter what. Believe me. Is it not true

[26:10] that the more you really need something,

[26:11] the more you suffer?

[26:14] Need is a problem. It means I'm not okay

[26:17] because I'm

[26:19] need to be a way that makes me be okay.

[26:22] Well, you're in trouble. Have you

[26:24] noticed that the little toys out there

[26:26] don't behave the way you think they

[26:28] will? That you can't always trust what

[26:30] they say and that thing always do what

[26:31] they're going to do? Yes or no? Anybody

[26:33] ever noticed? Of course, they're not

[26:35] going to behave the way you want them

[26:36] to. They are the sum of their learned

[26:38] experiences. You're the sum of your

[26:40] learned experiences, at least as a

[26:41] human. And those two have nothing to do

[26:44] with each other. You met this person and

[26:46] they have six months you want to get

[26:47] married or a year or something like

[26:48] that, right? But but they're 32 years

[26:51] old and so are you. They had every

[26:53] second of their life had 32 years of

[26:56] experiences that you didn't have. and

[26:59] you think you know them, then you don't

[27:02] understand psychology, do you? Because

[27:04] it says you're the sum of your learned

[27:05] experiences. It says they're the sum of

[27:07] their learned experiences. And you don't

[27:09] hang out very long, have you? And even

[27:11] if you hang out married to each other

[27:13] and go to work at the same place, you

[27:15] still have totally different experiences

[27:17] every single day, every minute of every

[27:20] day, every second of every day. So look

[27:23] what you're doing to yourself by

[27:25] limiting yourself to the frame of

[27:27] reference of me.

[27:29] It means you're going to suffer. And so

[27:31] otherwise you open up and how

[27:33] [clears throat] do you live the type of

[27:34] life? Can you live the type of life I'm

[27:36] talking about? I don't understand how

[27:38] you can live the life that you're

[27:39] living. And I'm not perfect, right? But

[27:42] I sure don't want to do that. Okay. I I

[27:46] would like to wake up in the morning and

[27:47] say, "I'm back. I wonder what's going to

[27:49] happen." How do I know? I'll find out

[27:53] when it happens. Well, what are you

[27:55] going to do? I'll serve it. Oh, it's

[27:58] like a video game. I'll play the game.

[27:59] I'll do the best I can. Why not? What

[28:02] good is it to play a game and not try

[28:03] your best? What is it to play a sport

[28:06] and not try to win? Doesn't mean you get

[28:08] neurotic about winning. Doesn't mean

[28:10] you're freaking out if I don't. But if

[28:11] you don't try, what fun is it? So this

[28:14] concept of the world's going to unfold

[28:17] and I'm going to do the dance and have a

[28:20] good old time. But but if it's not the

[28:23] way you want, then I need to let go of

[28:25] the part of me that's fixated on me and

[28:28] let it be what it is and learn to work

[28:30] with it and enjoy it and and not just

[28:32] work with it, serve it. You get to the

[28:34] point when you get your frame of

[28:36] reference expanded to where it's not

[28:39] about you.

[28:41] If your life is about you, you suffer.

[28:44] You don't get it. You think you make

[28:46] yourself happy by having it be about

[28:47] you. No, it limits your entire

[28:50] experience to things being the way you

[28:53] want them to be. And they're not that

[28:55] way, are they? Come [laughter] on.

[28:57] Right. They're not always that way. And

[28:59] then you worry they won't I already did

[29:01] it. You're worried they won't be. They

[29:03] etc. Right? If your frame of reference

[29:07] is, I'm here on this planet teaching how

[29:10] to live. I'm here on this planet

[29:11] spinning in the middle of nowhere for a

[29:13] few years. Can you handle it? Can you

[29:16] handle sitting on this tiny little

[29:19] planet for some 80 or 90 years, which is

[29:22] not very long, and have a good time?

[29:26] No. And you're taught you're not allowed

[29:28] to have a good time unless you succeed

[29:30] at this and do that and people like you.

[29:32] That's ridiculous. That's why I moved

[29:34] out to the woods. What am I going to

[29:36] live like that? everybody else's opinion

[29:38] of what's supposed to be happening or

[29:40] not happening and no one agrees anyways

[29:42] since they're the sum of their learned

[29:44] experiences.

[29:45] I don't want them deciding what I'm

[29:47] supposed to be doing because they all

[29:49] disagree, right? So, you just get to the

[29:51] point where you say, "I would rather

[29:53] live on the planet Earth, but I do." No,

[29:55] you don't. You live inside your mind.

[29:58] You live inside the fishbowl of your

[30:00] mind, and you just try to struggle with

[30:02] what's going on in there, and then you

[30:04] try to make what's happening in front of

[30:05] you match. and not not match. And that

[30:08] becomes your entire life, every bit of

[30:10] it. And that is not a fun life. That is

[30:13] not waking up in the morning and saying,

[30:15] "Okay, I'm back and let's see what

[30:19] unfolds and I'm going to put my whole

[30:21] heart and soul into every minute of

[30:24] whatever's unfolding in front of me to

[30:26] do the best I can to to serve it, to

[30:28] raise it." You get to the point, and I

[30:30] don't like to I don't get religious on

[30:32] you because I'm not religious,

[30:33] spiritual, right? where you say wait a

[30:36] minute I didn't create the planet earth

[30:38] did you

[30:40] come on which one you did it 4.5 billion

[30:42] years ago okay something created a thing

[30:45] and someone created all the galaxies all

[30:47] whatever I don't care quantum field

[30:50] created it but what created that at some

[30:52] point you realize this thing got created

[30:54] and I didn't do it and it's unfolding

[30:56] and I'm not making it unfold I'm up

[30:57] pedaling at all it's doing it every

[31:00] single day it unfolds other where

[31:02] everywhere I mean everywhere is in

[31:04] Gainesville everywhere Where's Florida,

[31:06] everywhere is in the United States or on

[31:08] the planet, everywhere is there's

[31:10] something going on. Everywhere is that

[31:12] expansive thing that I gave you. And you

[31:15] wake up and you say, "I don't experience

[31:16] it all, but I know it's all going on.

[31:18] But I experienced this in front of me."

[31:20] So, I'm experiencing the part of

[31:22] creation that's unfolding in front of

[31:24] me. Serve it.

[31:26] Why? What else is there to do?

[31:30] Give it love.

[31:32] Give it experience. Compassion. love,

[31:35] raise it, do whatever you can. It's not

[31:37] about you. It's about God. It's about

[31:39] serving God's serving creation. You have

[31:42] to think of it as I'll serve God, right?

[31:44] You're obviously the moments are

[31:46] unfolding in front of you. I'll give you

[31:48] another one you won't like me saying. By

[31:50] definition, the moments that are

[31:52] unfolding in front of you are the ones

[31:54] that are supposed to be unfolding in

[31:55] front of you.

[31:58] Prove it. Okay, I will. If it's hot out,

[32:01] it's supposed to be hot out. Why?

[32:02] because that's where the sun is in

[32:04] relation to this and that and the other.

[32:05] Is this person yelling at you? That

[32:07] person's supposed to be yelling at you.

[32:09] Why? Because all the events that

[32:10] happened their entire life that

[32:12] culminated together when they ate the

[32:14] bad pizza last night and they have a

[32:15] stomach ache and you ran into them five

[32:18] minutes earlier than you would have and

[32:20] now they're upset and they're yelling at

[32:22] you. All right? In other words, every

[32:23] moment is the result of every moment

[32:25] that ever was. Every moment is the

[32:28] result of every moment that ever was.

[32:31] and it culminates in front of you. You

[32:33] should be worshiping it. You should be

[32:35] saying, "Oh, wow. Took 4.5 billion years

[32:39] for this thing to show up. Welcome."

[32:42] And not only that, everything had to

[32:45] happen exactly the way it happened. If

[32:47] the person, you know, was driving in

[32:49] front of them was slower. They wouldn't

[32:51] have got to this place where they could

[32:52] yell at you at that time. Everything had

[32:54] to be exactly the way it was.

[32:56] Everything. Everything had to rain

[32:58] yesterday. Okay. I can't even talk about

[33:00] it. It blows my mind. It's not wrong.

[33:03] It's not what you want. Can you accept

[33:05] and honor and respect this is the

[33:07] unfolding of life in front of you and

[33:11] this is what it unfolded. It's not

[33:13] right. It's not wrong. It's not good.

[33:14] It's not bad. It's not better. No worse.

[33:16] It just is. There it is. Now, what do I

[33:19] do with it? Serve it. What do you mean?

[33:22] You're not going to serve it. You're

[33:23] going to serve yourself. You say, "I

[33:24] don't like it. I'll manipulate it. I

[33:26] change." That's where all the bad energy

[33:27] comes in. If everybody would serve the

[33:30] moments of falling in front of, there

[33:32] would be no wars. There'd be no

[33:34] disharmony. But no, everybody has their

[33:37] own concept and view of what they want

[33:39] going on. And they fight to make it

[33:41] happen. And they struggle and they hurt

[33:43] people and they do all kinds of things,

[33:45] don't they? All right. And you do, too.

[33:48] Okay? And so you eventually expand your

[33:52] frame of reference to at a minimum

[33:55] include the realities unfolding in front

[33:57] of you.

[33:59] It is what it is and I honor and respect

[34:01] it and now I can come in and dance with

[34:03] it, play with it, make it better,

[34:05] whatever. Write a nice song. I say I

[34:08] love you. I've noticed I happened the

[34:11] other day to me talking to some

[34:13] financial person, right? And I'm just

[34:15] habit I just have that business call

[34:18] whatever it is, right? And when I say,

[34:19] "Oh, goodbye, you know, I love you." And

[34:21] now they say, "I love you back. I I love

[34:24] you, too." Right? And they mean it. All

[34:27] right? And and and when I write emails,

[34:30] pretty much every single email I write,

[34:32] I don't care who it is, I don't sign it

[34:34] with, you know, best wishes, I sign it

[34:36] with great respect. But I respect

[34:39] another human being. What are they?

[34:41] They're the sum of their learn

[34:42] experiences. They're the most phenomenal

[34:44] thing in the world. They're way higher

[34:46] than possums. We talked about that the

[34:47] other day, right? So you don't write a

[34:50] possum goes by fine. But this is a

[34:53] person, the highest son, the

[34:54] evolutionary man was created in the

[34:56] image of God.

[34:57] What does that mean? Well, what is God?

[35:00] This creative force that's conscious and

[35:03] aware of things. And you are that except

[35:07] you've limited your awareness to your

[35:08] little thoughts, to stuff you build

[35:10] inside your fishbowl. What like I ask, I

[35:13] want you to see it. Truth. What's

[35:16] outside your fishbowl? It's all

[35:19] commotion and worrying and and upset and

[35:21] what am I going to do today? Right?

[35:23] That's your fishbowl. Got it? What's

[35:25] outside that fishbowl? peace, quiet,

[35:29] harmony way beyond meditation.

[35:32] It's like how about not that? That's

[35:36] what's that's what's outside your

[35:37] fishbowl. If you took your fishbowl off,

[35:40] that is what they mean. That's we saying

[35:42] about samadei. If that thing got taken

[35:44] off and it wasn't swimming around in

[35:47] there, but you're still there. You're

[35:50] aware that now there's not all this

[35:52] noise and commotion going on in there.

[35:54] What's that like? Oh, it's called the

[35:56] peace that passes all understanding.

[35:58] It's understandable. You feel peace when

[36:00] you get what you want or you don't have

[36:03] to get what you don't want. Like relief,

[36:05] right? What is a peace that passes all

[36:08] understanding? That fishbowl's off. And

[36:11] there's just this peace. Well, why not?

[36:13] You're not making commotion. You are in

[36:16] there making commotion inside that.

[36:19] [laughter] I can't even think about it

[36:20] anymore. What a commotion you make. What

[36:22] if you think somebody might say what you

[36:24] don't want to hear? Holy mackerel,

[36:27] you're in big trouble because you think

[36:29] whatever you want and that's what you

[36:30] do. You think the worst or or you think

[36:33] the best and it didn't doesn't happen.

[36:35] You get all disappointed. The point is

[36:37] you're busy making these thoughts that

[36:40] are fighting and bouncing off of each

[36:42] other and it's very difficult to live in

[36:44] there. Take off the fishbowl. Oh,

[36:47] there's no reason to have a fishbowl in

[36:49] there. What was it take to take off the

[36:52] fishbowl? Aside from expanding your

[36:53] frame of reference, you have to be able

[36:56] to handle what happened to you.

[36:59] If you can't handle the reality, do I

[37:02] have the right to call reality? What is

[37:04] reality? That which already happened

[37:06] there. Go try to treat us by definition

[37:09] already happened and you going to change

[37:10] it. It's reality. So you accept and

[37:13] honor that life is unfolding and you're

[37:16] present. You have you're a conscious

[37:18] being. Who are what is a human being? A

[37:20] conscious being experiencing reality.

[37:23] That's what a human being is. But they

[37:25] can't handle reality.

[37:28] Very few can. They're pictured on the

[37:29] wall. Handle reality. Get your picture

[37:30] on the wall. Okay? And really

[37:33] enlightenment is way cleaner than you

[37:35] understanding. Right? If you can't

[37:38] handle reality, what do you do? You play

[37:41] Freud. You suppress it, repress it, or

[37:44] deny it. You push it away. And I a major

[37:48] part of a talk I ever give. You do push

[37:50] things away in there. Do you understand

[37:51] that? If you don't like it or even think

[37:54] that you might like it, you don't want

[37:56] to experience it. And so you push it

[37:58] away. You push the energy away. That is

[38:00] what suppression is. That's what

[38:01] repression is. That's what denial is.

[38:03] You're saying, "I don't want it coming

[38:05] back to me. I'm in here. Go away from

[38:07] me." Right? Don't come back here because

[38:09] I don't like it. And then you store it.

[38:12] Right? So I spent a whole talk talking

[38:14] about that. in a few minutes, right? If

[38:17] you push it away in there, it stays in

[38:19] there. And that's how you built that

[38:20] fishbowl. That's where your edges are.

[38:23] If you can handle it, it doesn't get

[38:25] stored in there. It's going to rain

[38:27] tomorrow. What do I care? It's rain

[38:29] tomorrow. No, stay inside. It's like,

[38:32] what if you're like that? Or it's going

[38:34] to rain tomorrow. Oh, no. I was planning

[38:35] on doing all right. If you can handle

[38:38] it, you just handle it. It goes right

[38:40] through. It doesn't stay stuck in you.

[38:42] And so you just basically realize if I

[38:46] can handle the experiences I'm having,

[38:49] they don't get stuck in me. They don't

[38:51] get stuck in me. The words be here now

[38:54] take on a totally new meaning. Doesn't

[38:56] mean I'll struggle to be here now. It

[38:58] means you're literally here now instead

[39:00] of being there then. Okay? You're never

[39:03] here now. You're in your mind with all

[39:06] the thoughts of your past and what you

[39:07] want and what you don't want. That's not

[39:09] be here now. Be here and now is reality

[39:11] is unfolding in front of you first. Can

[39:13] you experience it instead of

[39:14] experiencing yourself or seeing it

[39:17] through the veil of yourself? Okay. Can

[39:19] you little experience what's actually

[39:20] happening? This person is yelling at me.

[39:23] Okay. Are you okay with that?

[39:26] Okay. Then you're going to get

[39:27] defensive. You're going to yell back.

[39:29] You're going to get walk away. Oh my

[39:30] god. You're going to create quite a

[39:32] commotion. What if say yell? Yeah.

[39:34] People sometimes yell. Come on.

[39:36] [laughter]

[39:36] You let it go. I wonder what if you

[39:38] literally sit there and say, "Okay,

[39:40] they're having trouble. Thank God they

[39:41] came to me with the yelling because

[39:43] somebody else would hit them. I can

[39:46] handle it." And you just let it go. What

[39:48] difference does it make? Doesn't make

[39:50] any difference. And so you work more and

[39:53] more to sit here and say, "What is

[39:55] unfolding in front of me is reality. I

[39:58] don't have the right to judge that

[40:00] Saturn has rings. I don't have the right

[40:03] to judge that ants do things that

[40:06] possums do things. They do their things.

[40:08] Okay? I don't have the right to judge

[40:11] the reality of the moments unfolding in

[40:12] front of me. Every single deep spiritual

[40:15] teaching says judge not that you shall

[40:17] not be judged. That's Christian. The

[40:20] third then patriarch says to end the

[40:23] burdensome process of judging. What does

[40:25] that mean? That's why you suppress

[40:26] things. You judge them. You judge them

[40:29] as I don't want that to happen. If you

[40:31] didn't judge it, it would just go

[40:33] through. But you're in there judging

[40:35] based on what? Your past experiences. I

[40:38] think she's really attractive. Why? She

[40:40] looks just like my sister.

[40:42] Except her nose is different. Hair is

[40:44] different, too. But she reminds me of my

[40:46] sister. And then the person does

[40:48] something. My sister would have never

[40:50] done that. I can't believe you did that.

[40:51] You're judging the whole things based on

[40:54] your mindset, based on your frame of

[40:56] reference, which is tiny. What if your

[40:59] frame of reference is what I want you to

[41:00] be? I'm on a planet spinning in the

[41:02] middle of nowhere with 8.5 other billion

[41:04] people and somebody just said something.

[41:08] Now, what can you do to help? It all

[41:10] becomes what can you do to help? Your

[41:12] entire life becomes service. Not because

[41:14] you want it to be. That's not your

[41:16] self-concept. It's because there's

[41:18] nothing else to do. You're done. You

[41:20] don't need anything. You're not

[41:22] suffering. You're not trying to get

[41:24] things and make yourself feel better

[41:26] because you already feel fine. So it's

[41:28] left with being like that. They're not

[41:30] trying to help people, but they help

[41:31] people like St. Francis's prayer. You

[41:34] know, I don't have to say it to you,

[41:36] right? It's like, okay, I don't need

[41:38] anything. How can I be of service? How

[41:41] can I help? Can I bring good energy down

[41:43] here to make you feel better? Not make

[41:45] me feel better. Not you have to be a

[41:47] certain way for me to be okay. I'm okay

[41:50] because you let go. So if you can handle

[41:53] the moments unfolding in front of you,

[41:56] then psychology means nothing because

[41:59] the psyche is not there. You didn't

[42:00] build one of those things in ego, super

[42:03] ego. You didn't build one. I like Freud.

[42:06] I really do. All right. Except that he

[42:08] never got out. He define what he was

[42:11] looking at, what he was looking at.

[42:13] Okay? And so basically, yes, your body

[42:15] has needs and functions and so on. Okay.

[42:17] Fine. Fine. They don't run my life. Yes,

[42:20] there are some primal things going on in

[42:22] there. Fine. Hello. Hi, primal things.

[42:25] How you doing? I'm not primal. And I was

[42:28] experiencing those drives. I'm

[42:30] experiencing the bodily instincts. Do I

[42:33] go with them or not go with them? I

[42:34] don't know. I'm just in here watching

[42:36] all of this. But I'm not watching it.

[42:38] I'm defining myself as a person that

[42:40] needs this and wants that as real,

[42:43] right? And then what about your super

[42:44] ego? That's my favorite. What's your

[42:46] super ego? He defines it as what society

[42:49] has impressed in your thoughts. So

[42:52] society's in there judging you. You

[42:55] don't even get to judge yourself, but

[42:56] you will do it based on your super ego.

[42:58] Mommy said, "Don't do that. Now you're

[43:00] doing it." I can't believe I did that.

[43:01] My mother was so So you're doing okay in

[43:03] there now? Because you got a lot of

[43:04] different people because those voices in

[43:06] there. Your preacher, your rabbi, your

[43:09] mother, your father, your last

[43:10] ex-husband, your they all put those

[43:12] concepts in there. How you're supposed

[43:13] to be. That's your super ego. And you

[43:16] judge what's going on in there in the

[43:18] fishbowl. And the fishbowl is getting

[43:20] hard to live with, right? Says, "Oh, we

[43:22] got this primal stuff coming up in the

[43:24] fishbowl. We got society in there

[43:26] screaming and yelling at you." And at

[43:28] one point, Fred define the ego is that

[43:31] which tries to find peace in between,

[43:34] puts them all together, and comes up

[43:35] with a concept of themselves that says,

[43:37] "Well, I'm a person that almost always

[43:40] listens to my mother, but not always. I

[43:41] don't want to be a mama's boy, right?

[43:43] And I'm a person who who goes to church

[43:45] once in a while, but that's okay. I

[43:47] don't want to be neurotic. I don't like

[43:48] to get all caught. You just define a you

[43:50] that fits between the raindrops. That's

[43:54] what your ego is. Your self-concept.

[43:57] It's not you. You're the one who's

[43:59] noticing all this stuff. Do you have

[44:00] primal instincts? Yes or no. Do you have

[44:03] a super ego? Answer me. Do you have an

[44:06] ego saying, "Oh, I shouldn't have done

[44:08] that. That is how I want to be. I

[44:10] present myself this way." You made up a

[44:13] self-concept that tries to make peace in

[44:16] there or do something and and none of

[44:18] it's you. None of it's you. You're the

[44:21] one who notices all this stuff. The

[44:22] highest state spiritually you grow. Are

[44:25] you noticing what I'm talking about? Do

[44:27] you notice that you're in there doing

[44:29] this? Do you notice you have a dream and

[44:32] you wake up instead of sinners saying,

[44:34] "Wow, I had a dream." You say, "What did

[44:38] it mean? Does that mean that I did

[44:39] something wrong? Should I apologize?

[44:42] It's a dream. All right. And you just

[44:44] start being able to live in there. How?

[44:47] By accepting and honoring reality.

[44:50] Reality is I had a dream. Fine. I had a

[44:52] dream. It was weird. Okay. Are you okay

[44:55] with that? No. I feel weird all day cuz

[44:58] I had that weird dream. I'm afraid to go

[44:59] to bed tonight because I might have a

[45:01] continuation phase episode number two of

[45:04] my dream world. I don't want to go back

[45:05] down there because I didn't like it. You

[45:07] have a dream. You look at the dream. Hi,

[45:10] thank you. There's a movie free of

[45:12] charge. That's the end of it. The same

[45:15] thing with the moments unfolding in

[45:16] front of you. Look what unfolded in

[45:18] front of me. How did it get there? You

[45:20] don't want the answer because it's big,

[45:22] right? Is everything that ever happened

[45:24] brought that moment in front of you. Was

[45:26] it meant for me? Not from a karmic point

[45:28] of view. Not from a guilt point of view,

[45:31] right? It obviously was meant for you

[45:34] because you were part of it. And so you

[45:36] say, "Hi." That's what you should say to

[45:38] moments of phon. Hi, how you doing? Can

[45:42] I help? Literally, that's how a great

[45:45] being lives her life. Hi. Just hi. Hi.

[45:49] Here comes God [laughter] manifesting in

[45:52] front of me. I didn't even get into the

[45:54] quantum field, which I don't know. I've

[45:55] talked to you about that. This isn't

[45:56] even here anyways. Just a bunch of atoms

[45:58] made up of quantum wavelets and they're

[46:01] coming up and presenting themselves to

[46:03] you. You should say hi to them. The

[46:06] little flower comes up. Hi, you came

[46:09] from the quantum field. That's really

[46:11] neat. And you manifest it just just for

[46:13] me. How's it for you? Cuz I'm the one

[46:15] who saw it. And you just keep on

[46:16] trucking. And you just having a good old

[46:18] time when always.

[46:21] You always have a good old time. Why?

[46:23] Because you're not defining it as right

[46:25] or wrong or good or bad or better or

[46:27] worse based upon your judgment, based on

[46:29] your past experiences. That's when you

[46:31] don't have a good time. You decide that

[46:34] wasn't supposed to happen. you're wrong.

[46:36] It's not morally right or it's just

[46:39] obviously was meant to happen because

[46:40] that happened. It's the sum of all its

[46:42] experiences. What would I do wrong if I

[46:45] get in a car accident? Nothing. Just the

[46:47] timing was such that they weren't paying

[46:49] attention. They ran the light and the

[46:51] the coffee maker took two seconds longer

[46:54] for you than what it usually takes and

[46:56] so therefore you hit a head on.

[46:57] Otherwise, you wouldn't hit each other.

[46:59] It's just what happened, right? It's

[47:01] what happened on the planet Earth in the

[47:03] middle of nowhere. Keep expanding your

[47:05] frame of reference until it includes

[47:07] everything.

[47:09] Why? And you shall know the truth and

[47:11] truth shall set you free. There you go.

[47:13] That is the truth. The truth is

[47:15] everything is the truth and you're okay

[47:17] with it. And so you practice being okay.

[47:19] You practice being okay. Doesn't mean if

[47:22] somebody comes up and hits you, you

[47:23] don't defend yourself. That's part of

[47:25] living living the life. But you don't

[47:28] make trouble for yourself because the

[47:30] driver in front of you is driving too

[47:31] slow or didn't use their blinker because

[47:33] somebody said something or didn't say

[47:35] something. You're not making trouble for

[47:37] yourself. You're just honoring,

[47:39] respecting reality. It's passing through

[47:41] you and you do what you can to help.

[47:43] It's a very simple life. You know what

[47:45] happens at the end of your life? You

[47:47] say, "That was fun." If at the end of

[47:50] your life you have a bucket list, you

[47:52] didn't do well. I love talking different

[47:56] than they do. Isn't your bucket list

[47:58] romantic and special? No, your bucket

[48:00] list is I'm not okay and these are the

[48:02] things that I won't get to do that I

[48:03] thought might make me be okay. I want to

[48:06] get to do them. As opposed to every

[48:09] moment of your life, wow, namaste. Come

[48:13] on, let's dance. Right? You find you're

[48:16] dancing with God. You're dancing with

[48:18] creation. You honor, respect everything

[48:20] it is. And you do your best to serve.

[48:22] And now at the end of your life, you sit

[48:24] there and say, "Wow, I wonder what it's

[48:26] going to be like to die. I don't care

[48:28] what they told me. I get to experience

[48:30] it firsthand. It should be so exciting."

[48:33] When you're in the death bed, be careful

[48:35] because you can't die because you're too

[48:37] excited.

[48:38] What is one of the biggest mysteries of

[48:40] life? Will you be there after death?

[48:43] You're going to find out. How can that

[48:46] not be exciting? Don't don't force it.

[48:49] You have no right to make it happen. But

[48:51] you don't have a problem with anything.

[48:53] And listen to me. I expanded my frame of

[48:56] reference to include everything. How you

[48:59] doing? Great. I'm doing great. And guess

[49:02] what? So is everybody else around you

[49:04] because that's the energy you're putting

[49:06] off. You become the servant of reality.

[49:10] All right. I tried to say it. I hope you

[49:13] got one different way. I talked about 20

[49:15] different ways. Right? You are a very

[49:17] special being born onto a very special

[49:20] place. Like I said, the Hubble, the

[49:23] James web, they can see pretty far away.

[49:25] They see millions of light years away.

[49:28] They seen squat, not burning things.

[49:33] And you're on this beautiful planet with

[49:35] animals and deers and and and and grass

[49:38] and trees and oceans and fish and wow,

[49:42] you won the lottery. But you don't see

[49:45] it because you're looking through your

[49:47] fishbowl. Let go of the fishbowl. How?

[49:51] Start by not putting more in there that

[49:53] you can't handle. How? By saying, "I can

[49:56] handle it." There's two ways that you

[49:58] don't put more in that you can't handle.

[49:59] Fighting with it so what you can't

[50:01] handle doesn't come in. Or saying, "I

[50:03] can handle that. I can handle anything.

[50:06] Can't you? I can handle anything." Other

[50:08] person makes up what I like or don't

[50:10] want. Who decided what you want or not?

[50:11] Me. I decided based upon your past

[50:13] experiences and you just start saying I

[50:16] can handle it. I can handle I can handle

[50:18] it and don't put more stuff in there and

[50:20] let your framework expand to where it

[50:22] includes I would like it to include

[50:24] everything. Everything. Anything that

[50:27] ever was and can ever be. It's all part

[50:30] of reality. And I honor reality. I

[50:32] respect reality. I worship reality. And

[50:35] I'm part of reality.

[50:39] Very good. That's the first time I ever

[50:42] had a talk on frame of reference. You

[50:44] see how powerful that is? Do you admit

[50:46] your frame of reference pretty small?

[50:48] Well, let's take care of that. Let's

[50:50] expand that. Become a great being. All

[50:55] right. Shagive.

A small frame of reference means your consciousness is contracted around personal concerns — what you want, what you like, whether people approve of you. When you live entirely within "I, me, mine," everything is filtered through personal preferences and fears, making you reactive and neurotic because reality rarely conforms to your demands.
When you expand your awareness to include reality as it is — rather than how you want it to be — the minor irritations lose their power to upset you. A scratch on your car or a piece of criticism becomes contextualized within a much larger field, giving you more room to breathe and respond without constant emotional reactivity.
The witness is the awareness that observes your thoughts and experiences without being defined by them. Most people identify with the voice narrating their story, but you are actually the one aware of that voice. Recognizing yourself as this witnessing consciousness is the foundation for expanding your frame of reference.
We tend to use our past experiences as a reference point for interpreting the present. But your personal history — the things that happened to you — is statistically insignificant compared to the billions of events unfolding simultaneously elsewhere. Holding onto past pain as a defining frame limits your ability to see the present freshly.
Notice moments when you're contracting around a concern — worry about what someone thinks, anxiety about a mistake, fixation on a minor problem. Deliberately place that concern against the background of cosmic scale and time. Also practice observing your thoughts without identifying with them, recognizing the awareness that witnesses your mind doing its work.
No. Expanding your frame doesn't create indifference; it creates freedom. You can still respond appropriately to what needs attention, but from a place of acceptance rather than demand. You're no longer bracing against reality, which paradoxically allows you to engage more authentically and with greater love.
